Great mpg and faster than either the manual or tiptronic. The paddle shifters are a must have. Good video. Changed the fluid using Amzoil. No issues whatsoever. @Kris Nicholson I don't think that's true. Once the hardware is installed and mechanically working, and you have the new trans wired correctly, the software side of things is fixable. I know for a fact that on the MQB platform, the ECUs have the same hardware and software part numbers, regardless of transmission. Swapping the trans is as simple as changing the correct bits in the ECU and other module's long coding, and removing that auto trans from the Gateway Installation List on the CAN gateway. This is an older car, so it may be different than the MQB platform, but I can't imagine requiring an ECU replacement for a transmission swap. Worst case, maybe flashing the ECU to a different software version with ODIS Engineering or something but again, not impossible or too costly. If it really needed a different ECU, it can still be swapped with a cheap used junkyard one and adapted with ODIS Service. DAP could do it if they wanted to...

13:39 I understand Denso for the most part is not a major supplier for VW/Audi, but they supply at the very least one part on every vehicle to just about every automotive manufacturer in the world. They are also owned by Toyota and supply most parts for toyotas. A bit surprised at how you would say they are bad quality or not a very good value. Not surprised at all you would recommend Bosch hahah.
I really like that you didnt cut the scene where you made the mistake because we all have learning lessons. I have a 2016 A3 and needing rear brakes am now tossing up the idea of a minor upgraded set up or not. In the winter (lots of snow and ice) my ABS drives me nuts and does not like to let me stop. Anyone have any recommendations?
I'd buy it. Used CVT is like $600-1500 for the part. So, in a $1500 car if I did it myself over a weekend, that's $3k. Still a bargain. Drive axles are like $100 each from Autozone, and easy to swap out. The Autozone ones are fine. I put a couple of them in my various Audi/VW cars over the years and never had an issue.
Have a a4 b7 3.0 tdi s line quattro as my daily and I love it,went for a manual and thankful i did, that pinch bolt that holds the top arms in place is the worst job on these cars,an absolute nightmare to get out
BIG G yup! we call it the “asshole bolt”. It took me 2 days to get the driver side bolt out... I ended up heating the aluminum to 400 degrees and using an air powered chisel. A NIGHTMARE indeed.
@@JDJD-mw9rr it can be real bad.if you soak the bolt at both ends with penetrating fluid every other day for about a week before the job it will give you a real good chance at getting it out,a bit of heat around the part the bolt goes through can make a huge difference also but just be careful the rubber on the upper control dont catch fire. you can pick up a butane blow torch kit on ebay for a few pound/dollars,one that has a trigger,so handy
Another great video, love the work you guys do. I have used your videos to help me with maintainence , diagnostics and repairs to my own 2007 A4 2.0tfsi a load of times. Thank you. One thing not mentioned in this video though, was the cam chain and tensioner. I'm curious to know if these are something to watch out for? Ive heard some stories of the tensioners failing, but have also read that there's no change interval providing the engine is serviced properly with correct oil. Is the chain and tensioner something I should consider replacing at some point? Car currently has just over 113k miles on it. Any input would be really appreciated 🤙🏻
I agree @ 15:41 where you say you’re “not super familiar with CVT transmissions..”. CVT = A continuously VARIABLE (not valueless) transmission! Your fault code P0706 is probably the transmission range sensor (aka neutral switch). I would use VCDS to test the module. Possible cause is corrosion either on connector or sensor by a leaking water vent pipe under passenger carpet. If the fluid change / adaptation doesn’t help, this is what you may want to look at.
I have the same year count. I've done a laundry list of repairs on this vehicle. I have the 2.0t Quattro. I love this car. I do have one problem i can't seem to get rid of. And that is uneven idle and acceleration. I've done, coils, plugs, air filter, mass air flow, map sensor, vacuum pump, coolant flange, timing belt, turbo, pvc, and lastly regular oil and coolant changes. It doesn't struggle to stay on. It bounces back and forth about 100 rpm when cold and as i begin the morning. I warm up all my cars in the morning and this one is no exception. The problem persists for about an hour then goes away. Any ideas?
I have an '07 A4 manual with nearly 200k miles on it. I'll probalby feed it very expensive parts for a long time to keep it going. There is no replacement for this car anymore.... maybe the Golf Alltrack manual comes close, but the A4 B7 AWD is a lot better. I'm keeping an eye out for a B7 S-Line wagon with a stick. They're super rare.
@@erichtisnado1536 '07 Avant 3.2 6spd Titanium package here...apparently 1 of 9. Will also do whatever I can to keep it strong for as long as possible. Love it. Just over 80K miles right now and only putting on about 3K a year.
I had a B7 for many years, eventually got her up to stage 2. I loved it, but it was a lot of work to keep it in top shape. Basically everything that was mentioned I replaced at one time or another. Thankfully there was a 120,000 mile warranty on that awesome cam follower.
Mine was $15k in 2013 (bought A4 2.0T Quattro sedan, 2007 premium model with a little less than 50000 miles on it). Great price! Where could I find a used Audi SUV without branded title and all the services done for its age ? I still have my A4 and currently it's got 146,000 miles on it :) Great car very dependable and useful all around car. I was looking at a Q7 2017 (3.0T with towing package) but they're like 35,000 dollars right now.
This is an FSI engine. Has a timing belt and not a chain. You are thinking about the 2.0 TSI motor that has a timing chain and the TSI came to the US in late 08 and the engine cover on VWs said TSI. FSI motors have cam follower issues.
@@kylemandt527 Em no I'm not mistaken, the FSI engine has a timing belt AND a timing chain. It has a timing belt from crank to exhaust cam, then a chain between exhaust and intake cam. The cam chain and tensioner setup also has an oil pressure controlled phaser on the exhaust cam, this is how variable valve timing is achieved on the FSI. You've just highlighted the 'often overlooked' part of my original post!
I'm going to look at a 2.0T Auto car soon. Don't want a 2.0T, don't want an Auto, but it runs & drives and I want an Audi. Daily it for a while then when something inevitably dies maybe do a VR6 manual swap lol.
I had a B7 A4 w/ manual & Sline. I didn't know Audi had a CVT ever! Then i made some research and it's on Frontrak only! Shame on you for buying a non Quattro Audi!!! ;). But seriously, they are uber rare in canada since Quattro is a must. Cheers!
Uper ball joint check was false, have to turn the wheel fully to the end left and right and then on each turn push 12 a clock to see if there is any play. Under u have to use a bar and often before and after the wheel been turned left and right.
Do these 2.0 TFSI engines have any problem with the oil pump? (the oil pump balance shaft hex key is too weak) Or is it just the 2.0 diesel's weakpoint? I have a similar condition B7 2.0 TDI manual with 296.000 km (184k miles) and I have already had it repaired preemptivly. I want is to reach 500.000 km. :) BTW I'd love to see that manual conversion in a video.
@@Jackinacox not all of them are CVT... Definitely have to look at the individual model and transmission model, FWD Tiptronic Audis exist too, they're not all Multitronic.
Avoid if there is no service history and 6 plate clutch version. If its the 7 plate version with regular oil changes and the car has gasoline engine and its not remaped then its ok. I have 220000km on my gasoline CVT and the box runs like a dream
Let's see an update. Love this platform. In addition to the things you mentioned, balance shafts can seize so there's a massive write up on that. Parts list to convert to 1.8 oil system is more than a new motor. Accusump is very highly recommended to save it. I'd love to see an install video of that is you choose to do it.
Hi , need an advice please, i change the oil in the gearbox..audi a4 b8 2013 -2L diesel…i forgot to replace the filter….is very important to put the new one in?
He knows what it actually stands for. What he is doing, which is quite obvious, is giving the acronym different meaning because CVT's are generally considered to be garbage.
You filming your whoops was top quality! Almost made me wanna jump on your site and spend some of my Stimulus check! But I got hardly anything left to spend 😞.
I have this same exact car other then mine is white. I spun a bearing on the crank and it is pretty much done. I’m gonna replace the engine but now I’m wondering what it would take to do a manual swap. The bad part is my CVT transmission has no problems so far and the car has 136,000 miles on it
Denso makes decent stuff, infact they are an OE brand for alot of makers! They also tend to price their stuff more fairly and started penetrating the DIY space a bit.
Vibration under acceleration comes from inner CV joint 100% it is not Gearbox related! even if there is zero play once taken out for inspection. Puting in new ones will make it super smooth under acceleration. Regarding transmission error, control unit needs to be removed from back of cvt (continiously VARIABLE transmission) gearbox, send it to get refurbished. There is tiny wires that connects unit connector to pcb that breaks because of heat and vibration. Transmission fluid replaced and adaptation performed. Done!
@Steven Strain It had some blowby which is normal, but then one day just suddenly it started draining coolant into the engine. The DSG just needed a clutch pack at around 120k ever since then the DSG had been problem free. I'm thinking in a year or so I'll have the disposable income to hit up integrated engineering for their built short block.
Head gasket failure. There are plenty of engines out there you can get for around $500-$1000. 2.0 FSI is a decent engine. Aside from couple weak points.
The CVT is an amazing transmission. I have it in combination with the 3.0 V6. Up to 45 mph it revs at 1200rpm. At 75 mph it revs 2000 rpm. 0-60 in 6.5 sec. Average fuelconsumption is 1:15. Very smooth, very silent, brilliant. The CVT saves 25% fuel, so if it breaks down, no problem. I gladly have it repaired. It has been flushed at 30.000miles and will be flushed at 60.000 miles... just to make sure. No such thing as lifetime transmission fluid.
Also worth noting with this particular car it's known to have a cam chain tensioner from hell and of all things a shit torque converter! I actually had my tensioner blow which resulted in a cylinder head swap, and it generally ran like trash for a year while I had it before I finally swapped the TC, fluid, and filter. Swapping to solid rubber motor mounts was a choice move as well. I love my baby but boy howdy she's a pain in the ass.
Thank you for the video! I am also thinking about buying an used Audi A4 B7. I would rather get one with Quattro to avoid the CVT transmission. I know this car is high maintenance, but one thing I worry the most is the oil consumption. Is replacing the piston rings the only solution on the oil consumption issue? Once again thank you so much for sharing the video!
Allen Hsu the A4 B7 Generation has no Oil consumption problem. It started around 2007 with the first TFSI Generations and lasted till 2013. but avoid the old 2.0T, it’s junk!

"You might have just broke this car," is where I laughed out loud.
The vibration issue under load is the inner cv joints. I have a b7 tdi cvt and had the exact same issues. Even the P0706 code.
hey you didn't mention the plastic coolant junction pipe buried down at the back of the engine that weeps and then fails and is a complete pita to replace because you do it all blind. Ask me how I know.
I love my b7, auto 6 speed, 200k miles, runs like a top
Have you ever had timing issue?
CVT?
The b7 is my favourite .
I much prefer the manual transmission.
I have a 2006 v6 deisel that i juat got my hands on and its a great car
I like how you kept in your fuggup.
👍🏻
Nice video. Helpful
I love my vehicles CVT. Works great and much more efficient than gears.
It's it that bad? I have to do one on my A8
@@JDJD-mw9rr it can be real bad.if you soak the bolt at both ends with penetrating fluid every other day for about a week before the job it will give you a real good chance at getting it out,a bit of heat around the part the bolt goes through can make a huge difference also but just be careful the rubber on the upper control dont catch fire. you can pick up a butane blow torch kit on ebay for a few pound/dollars,one that has a trigger,so handy
I think it's 5-link not 4-link, tie-rod considered to be one of the links too.
Thanks bro
Peace from Algeria
Any ideas?
The mileage would be helpful to determine if it worth tinkering with.
I wish you would have inspected the CVT mounts. I'm having trouble finding info about the transaxle mounts.
Mileage on vehicle please?
would've liked to see a wagon of this car ( i have an 08 avant manual :D ) such pretty cars
Kojy : I agree. Looking for a 2006-2008 wagon right now as upgrade from 2004 Passat wagon.
I miss my b7 6 speed smoothest transmission I’ve ever experienced
I have an '07 A4 manual with nearly 200k miles on it. I'll probalby feed it very expensive parts for a long time to keep it going. There is no replacement for this car anymore.... maybe the Golf Alltrack manual comes close, but the A4 B7 AWD is a lot better. I'm keeping an eye out for a B7 S-Line wagon with a stick. They're super rare.
'05 b7 avant quattro stick here aswell. Mine with 55k miles :D
I was looking at a Q7 2017 (3.0T with towing package) but they're like 35,000 dollars right now.
have you done a rear and front diff fluid change video for this platform?
I like your honesty
Rewatching this video today is crazy bc the price on them jumped up so high
You forgot to mention the cam timing chain and tensioner, the often overlooked intake valve smasher!
Cheers!
You probably already changed it but I saw your vvt solenoid n205 valve was leaking at the back of the head. It'll make the car do wacky idle stuff.
BTW I'd love to see that manual conversion in a video.
i didn't know audi's ever used cvt's....cool!
All automatic fwd audis are CVT - stay away from them!
@@Jackinacox not all of them are CVT... Definitely have to look at the individual model and transmission model, FWD Tiptronic Audis exist too, they're not all Multitronic.
@@sookoll23 all longitudinal fwd autos are CVT up until 2016 or something when they got DSG.
there's no rwd audi. quattro is 50/50 unless its s or rs model
Avoid if there is no service history and 6 plate clutch version. If its the 7 plate version with regular oil changes and the car has gasoline engine and its not remaped then its ok. I have 220000km on my gasoline CVT and the box runs like a dream
I broke one of those rotor set screws on a mk4 golf running down the axle nut with an impact with no wheel lugs installed 😅
Is it normal for these engines to gie a purring sound as they idle, if not would replacing the plugs and wires fix this issue?
sick shirt! eurokracy represent!
Great information keep up the good work...👍👍👍
awesome video!
Thank god I got the Quattro avant version of this car with the auto. 120k miles and no issues whatsoever. These CVTs were a load of crap.
Love that shirt Canada 🇨🇦 represent🤘
Let's see an update. Love this platform.
In addition to the things you mentioned, balance shafts can seize so there's a massive write up on that. Parts list to convert to 1.8 oil system is more than a new motor.
Accusump is very highly recommended to save it. I'd love to see an install video of that is you choose to do it.
Ohhhhh ! I thought cvt meant constant vicious troubles ,ty for vid
Hi , need an advice please, i change the oil in the gearbox..audi a4 b8 2013 -2L diesel…i forgot to replace the filter….is very important to put the new one in?
I love the denso coils better than Bosch ones
CVT - continuously variable transmission
continuously variable transmission yeah, thought the same
He knows what it actually stands for. What he is doing, which is quite obvious, is giving the acronym different meaning because CVT's are generally considered to be garbage.
He wasnt giving it different meaning. He is a dumbass.
It defintly stands for Chickens Valet Trucks.....i don't get why no one know this but please remember for next time so you don't sound stupid!#!#!
Denso coils are no good? Or no good for Audi? I’ve had so many Bosch or whatever VW/Audi uses coils go bad over the life of the car.
The bad part is my CVT transmission has no problems so far and the car has 136,000 miles on it
more like Crap Valueless Transmission
Can you please do a video of the common coolant leak because i have that in my car ?
great video. I got to check my audi a4 b6 on the engine monts
Sweet! Where can I get one? Includes free fault codes...
Denso makes decent stuff, infact they are an OE brand for alot of makers! They also tend to price their stuff more fairly and started penetrating the DIY space a bit.
Denso is all I use in my 08 RL
The rear diff is missing!
Balance shaft module check?
I have the same car with the most recent theft deterrent system available... a 6 speed transmission.
Done!
False, it was not the axles. It was the trans. We already addressed in this video. ua-cam.com/video/ryQ6pfZFbfc/v-deo.html
Maintained my fsi meticulously and it turded out at 195k miles
was it a CVT?
Dsg
@@progmanmike Dsg is prolly more unreliable than cvt. And 195k miles is pretty good
@Steven Strain
It had some blowby which is normal, but then one day just suddenly it started draining coolant into the engine.
Thanks great information just let me know I can't afford an Audi.
I had the same issue with my front snub mount. Bits felt like mattress foam was sprinkled up in there :/
You really know your subject.🇨🇦👍👍👍
Also worth noting with this particular car it's known to have a cam chain tensioner from hell and of all things a shit torque converter! I actually had my tensioner blow which resulted in a cylinder head swap, and it generally ran like trash for a year while I had it before I finally swapped the TC, fluid, and filter.
Swapping to solid rubber motor mounts was a choice move as well. I love my baby but boy howdy she's a pain in the ass.
It doesn't have a torque converter, has a CVT.
@@ln5747 it does have a TC. Source: I have one and I changed it.
@@peytonbloom4123 you said the car shown, it had a CVT, not a torque converter.

I have a A6 with a broken multitronic trans and i cant find a new transmisson for it
Thank you for the video!
I have a 05.5 A4 6 speed. I’m torn on investing money in or parting ways. Bitter sweet
Same here. A4 Quattro 6 speed. Keep it. What's wrong with it?
