How to Prune a Young Mango Tree in 20 minutes!

- After you pick the last mango, it's time to prune! Pruning is an essential part of mango tree care and maintenance. It keeps the tree healthier and smaller. This allows for better air circulation and light penetration, creates a more attractive tree, and the fruit is easier to pick.
In this video, Chris shows how to prune a 6-year-old mango tree in real time. It only took 20 minutes. Last year we were unable to prune this tree, so this year's pruning is more dramatic than it would have been under ideal circumstances.

Thanks for describing the anchoring of branches and collar formation at 10:20
It's good to know how to prune my mango. This is the first year my mango has set fruit.I like your videos because they are easy to understand
I like that hand saw you have.
I learned so much from this. Thanks Chris!
Thanks for this video, I want to do the same to may mango tree after I harvest the mangoes. This video will definitely help.
Will the tree not succum to die-back Disease? It is observed,in the absence of leaves at growth ring,if a cut is made the branches are dying.
Weexperience with Mango plants in my farm in south India.
Nice watching the video, the tree will grow to manageable height and good shape.
Hope to see the video of this tree with good canopy.
Thank you,Chris.
😜🥰
Wow that was a hard trim , Mango trees are resilient.
Nice! I purchased a VP from Fast-Growing-Trees as well and it arrived just a couple of weeks ago. I’m in Northern CA zone 9b.
i love mango
Been waiting on this video. you did a great job on the tree. thanks for your time. I always enjoy watching your videos.
Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful.
Because there are so many different circumstances, we're making many pruning videos. It's just a seasonal thing, so don't think we've turned into a pruning channel.... In a couple weeks, we'll be on to other projects
sounds great.
Thanks. It is very informative and useful those who are new in mango plantation.
Thanks for watching!
Hi. Would love to see an update in this tree.
Do you have an update on this tree. I would love to see it, 3 years later. I love these videos! Thank you
The owner has decided to top work some or all of the tree, so there might be a video on that....
Thanking you.
Chris, I'm a new subscriber to your YT videos and I am so thankful for the knowledge and expertise you share with your followers. I am from Phoenix, Arizona and I am transforming my yard into a 'tropical food forest' I have 6 mangoes, 2 Jamaican cherry, 1 Barbados cherry, guava, moringas, jujube, pomegranate to name a few. I recently purchase a mango grafted mango from a local tropical nursery here, and the tree was labeled 'bullocks heart'. I tried looking for info regarding this variety but end up with nothing. Have you heard about a bullocks heart mango? Also, I have a Marlys mango and was thrilled when you interviewed Marlys herself, and how the mango came to be. Thank you for the inspiration.
Sounds great! You have lots of fun fruit trees... I hope they give you lots of great fruit!
All I know about Bullock's Heart is that it's from Egypt. Sorry I don't have any other information, but I don't grow it.
Thank you..I grasp lots of how to prune a mango tree.
So inspired to plant my own mango in my tiny yard - TY! Any examples of espalier mango would be amazing.
Very nice way
great video. thank you for this info.
i have a R2E2. .February summer in queensland australia. 2nd season fruit .and i thought i pruned it a little too hard..but after seeing this, i'll give it another hair cut.. Part two of this particular tree ?. 🤗

Does mango tree need open canopy?
It doesn't need it, but more sunshine and air circulation are good things
I hope you made trees from all these cuttings !
Is that a 10 inch hand saw Chris?
Pete :")
My Coconut Cream mango tree began branching at around 5 ft tall. It has four branches. Should I cut it back down to 3 or 4 feet tall and let it begin sending out new branches from lower? Is it ok to do this now (Sept 16, 2021)?
Kinda drastic
Great videos. I have a question, I know people graft trees at trunks for a certain variety tree but why is grafting done on the branches?
I think it makes a better tree and is less stressful for the tree, but I know that in certain parts of the world grafting directly into a stumped tree is common.
Very useful video, was actually waiting for such demos. We get lot of rain in our place. Do you suggest any treatment to the cut ends of the branches?
We don't treat cut ends with anything. All the research that I've heard says different products that supposedly help the tree heal are a waste of money
We usually put a small paste of Neem leaves and fresh dung if the cuts are very severe.
@@MadhuReddy-js2nb Thank you Madhu for giving an organic solution. As yo know Organic Farming Practices is India's gift to mankind.🙏
I think it would have been a better idea to take that high graft and graft it to a lower branch. You basically cut it back to the graft point anyway.
The grafted variety is 'Glenn' ...which can get quite leggy if not encouraged to branch. In this circumstance, I think this small piece of 'Glenn' will branch out very nicely.
There's always lots of ways to approach situation like this one. Hardly ever is there only one correct solution.
Hi Chris! I have two mango trees 2 years old. One is a Glenn and the other is a Kent. Neither one fruited this year but they both grew like crazy. I am pretty sure I over irrigated them last winter. All summer they have had gray leaf tips. Do you know what causes that? How much should I trim them? Thank you in advance.
Too much water decreases the chances of fruit developing. Try to cap off irrigation in the area where your mangos are growing. I'm guessing the leaf-tip issue is a nutrient deficiency.
Trimming... I would at least prune every branch when it's 12-14 inches long. If you want to try to keep your trees small, tip the branches when they're very young and at least a couple times each year
H.
I want to prune my old mango trees , which month is suitable and also want to try grafting , again tell me season best for it Thanks in advance
Old mango trees take a while before new sprouts form. I would probably cut them back in February or March. That way you would have many good months to graft after new growth has emerged. Cutting back part of the tree each year is easier on the tree, but sometimes it's necessary to do the whole tree at the same time.
Can you prune my mango tree? I'm in California.
Sorry, but we don't prune other people's mango trees!
When should we stop fertilizing mangoes in Southern California
Probably the end of October
@@TrulyTropical thank you.
I am from asia dear tell me how much fertilizar for 3 years mango
ua-cam.com/video/xX0yWlGIyM0/v-deo.html,
you still leave a big branch point to the house. the reason you don't want the tree lean tour the house. is that right?
This tree has some young grafts on it, so I treated those areas a little differently
Did you prune this tree in August?
In my eyes, you almost murder the mango tree, but you are the expert so believed in you.
you scared that poor cat...
😢😢😢😭😱😱😱
I’m sorry but that was a hack job! I don’t see it balanced! They should of trained the tree when I was younger.
