Great video. I have a small backyard. This pruning method allows me to keep my mango trees at a manageable size while still getting strong fruit production.

I have about hundred fifty mango trees and they are 28 years old. We never pruned for a long time I wonder why none of this tree are productive. I planning to visit my farm in 3 months and hired some people to prune the trees so I can make money out of it thank you so much . I learned something what am going to do.

Sounds fine. Just select out but a few evenly space branches as it gets past the dense twiggy stage. After that give it time to grow fruiting wood and you have the smaller mango that you want. Just keep up on the pruning.

Yea 20 ft tall is not a problem because you can use picker to get fruit. Above 20ft becomes problematic because now you must climb the tree to reach the fruits. Really though been climbing my mango tree since i was young and no big deal. But I understand if you old and frail you shouldn’t be climbing.

Dr. Campbell, unfortunately, I have never known how to take care of my mango tree. It has been growing lengthy with most of the leaves at the top and a few toward the side. I don't know how to prune it. It flowered last year but it's little fruit were very small marble size mangos which all fell on their own. Is there anyway I can graft a piece from the top to the lower part of the tree in order to not have it so lengthy? It's a medium size tree. I'm so scared to prune it. I don't like that it's getting tall. I live in Texas and the weather is warm now in February 2015...but then the weather does yoyo between hot & cold. This year has been from 60 - 87, no telling what it will be like in the next two weeks. Should I prune it at this time? Should I wait for the beginning of Spring? What can I do about the height of the tree? HELP!!!!

This man destroyed the mango tree.
    This is a small tree.
It didn't need trimming for at least three more years.
He is pretending to be a scientist of mango trees.
Be careful !!! These people are determined to damage your mango trees.
If you follow them blindly you will do great harm to your mango trees.
Your production will go down at least 50%.
When we looked at this man we could assume that he is going to do a catastrophic massacre of this mango tree.
A mango tree cannot shout, cannot cry, cannot heat, cannot beat, cannot kick and cannot give a tit for tat response.
If this mango tree had these kinds of capabilities you would find this man in a grave by this time.
On his epitaph you would see "This man was sent to heaven by the mango tree of John Doe".
Otherwise you would at least find him in a hospital.
His nose might be kicked off, his one hand or both hands might be broken, his might be blinded etc. etc.
He is lucky that the mango trees are gentle and they don't hurt their enemies.
That does not mean that you go and start an offensive encounter with a mango tree.
We must respect the mango trees and we must not harm them unnecessarily.
Otherwise we will face justice on the day of final judgement.
May God forgive this man and give him some wisdom.

Wow sorry but I totally disagree with you. I have a 30' tall tree with a 50 foot spread and it puts out over 2000 very good mango's two times a year. All you have to do is spray the foliage with salt peter water mix every other year and wack the truck and branches with a bat or some weighty dowel every year. It started as a 3' tall sapling 15 years ago so you can picture how vigorously its grown.

after pruning and trimming a desired, say, 1.5-meter radius canopy dig a small canal around the tree with same 1.5-meter radius at approximately 3feet deep. .insert the same 3feet wide tarpaulin sheet circumferentially between walls of canal. .sheet inplaced, return the dug soil in the canal. .the tarpaulin will serve as buffer for root's horizontal expansion thus prevent or slows down canopy growth. .this would be similar to bonsai principle. .as always canopy growth depends on the horizontal roots development of plants. .

I have six mango trees now in my backyard orchard. I mostly collect patio varieties like Pickering, Nam Doc Mai, Carrie, and Mallika. They obviously don't grow as fast, but I have to admit that I just hate the idea of pruning my mango trees because I feel like I am getting rid of potential fruit. I do tend to tip prune which helps in both keeping the tree short, expanding the canopy, and producing a lot of fruit at the same time.

Half these comments don't know shit about tree pruning. The more you prune the more the tree grows...

    Dear Fairchildgarden,
    Amazing job !
If I could make one recommendation, I would also advise to partially remove the bottom branches as well, that way, you would give more room for the tree to grow taller and give a lush look to the tree than a stunted appearance that its got right now.
    Cheers !

Good Afternoon. I have 3 purchased grafted Mango trees which I have purchased from our local Plant Nursery. A Carrie, Coconut Cream & Peach Cobbler. Carrie is the Oldest at 4 years of age & she is almost 10ft tall & has fruited already, purchased her in a 3 gal container & recently the other 2 varieties. The Coconut Cream & Peach Cobbler are at an estimated 4ft tall. We live in Zone 9B SW Florida. I also recently have grown FROM SEED after eating an Ataulfo Mexican Mango & Hayden (or what I believe it to be being so Fushia & Yellow in skin color). These were 2 delicious, incredible Mangos that I just had to grow.. My Ataulfo is 3.5 ft tall & the Hayen is 8ft & strong. I am being told now that I should cut them down, because it would be "POT LUCK", to see what kind of fruit if any would grow from it. I was sadden to hear that, but I would like to graft on the Strong 8ft tree, that is cropped beautifully. I would love to create, a Cocktail Style of a tree with part of the Carrie, Coconut & possibly the Ataulfo, but that was from see. Can you please help guide me in the right direction as my trees are so beautiful the from seed. Not looking for an Ornamental tree, we would love Fruit from it....Thank You So Very Much, Maria.....

Sir; how young can you start pruning your mango tree? I have a two year old tree and I want to control the height. John
