All About Fertilizing Mango Trees

- Mangos in South Florida benefit from nutrients that are not naturally available in local soils. Of course there are many mango trees that look healthy and produce nice fruit without intervention, but providing additional nutrients can improve the health and productivity of your tree, and the quality of your fruit.
First, there is an overview of the macronutrients and micronutrients important to mango trees. Then, Mr. Har Mahdeem, a tropical fruit tree expert, discusses the different types of conventional and organic fertilizers available for mango trees. Mango trees at different ages and stages have different fertilizer requirements. Finally, Chris talks about what fertilizers we use at Truly Tropical and how to properly apply fertilizer to your mango tree.

Great video with lots of information. I admire your mango orchard. It looks like heaven on earth. I have watching many UA-camrs on how to grow mangos. experts says mango like acidic soil between 6-7 ph. I have a few questions. 1. would it change the ph of the soil when adding all all these nutrients? 2. Did you test your soil before adding nutrients and what was the ph? 3. During what time of the year did you applied these nutrients? Thank you for sharing.
I have only one Kensington Pride mango ( I live in Perth, Australia) which I don't monitor that much but certainly I will apply some fertiliser more frequently. I sort of just let the mango do its thing. It is not really planted in an ideal location and I haven't had huge production, possibly because I have been very frugal with fertiliser. I prefer to use organic fertilisers. I probably need to make sure I give more phosphorus and potassium and perhaps some trace elements. Charlie Carp fish fertiliser, seasol a seaweed tonic fertiliser and rooster booster fertiliser and some potassium sulphate or banana skins will be my future inputs. Where I live the soil is just sand and needs building up with organic matter, which I have done. The mango tree seems fairly healthy very few black spots on the leaves, anthracnose, so I won't bother spraying with copper compounds. My mango tree is a Kensington Pride, and the mangoes produced are very good except for the fibre (stringiness) and I will watch one of your grafting videos again to see if I can successfully graft a valencia pride variety onto a limb.
Thanks for sharing your experience of growing mangos in Australia! It sounds like your soil is similar to ours here in Florida! The farm is on an ancient sand ridge and organic fertilizers and soil amendments have definitely helped our mango trees.

@@dustinbossmusic that should be fine. I’ve used avocado/citrus fertilizer on my parents Pickering and every year they get tons of fruit along with a healthy tree.
Can I ask why did you use Palm fertilizer??
I only use decomposed oak mulch and my mango trees are very healthy that produce much growth , flowering and Fruit , I believe as a certified arborist that healthy soil generates healthy trees and growth ! PS. The same applies to my Avocado trees !
Hi Chris, I watch your youtube so often and I learn a lot from your. Now I have question for you: my mango has new leaves but they burned and white spot all over, my Lychee did the same, how your advice to fix the problem?. In my home land: Cambodia, they preserve green mango by putting in big jar by adding lime stone powder, water, and salt so they can keep for hold season because they like sour, they do to sap0dilla too by pick fruit before they ripe, keep in jar by adding water, lime stone powder, this way they can keep longer.
I think it is wise to dig a hole around the canopy and put the fertilizer in the hole to maximize the efficacy of the fertilizer

Nice video. at about 20:40, believe you meant to say "40 oz" (equal 2 1/2 lbs). 1/3 of that, about 13 oz of Gypsum. (Some of my young, grown from seed, mango trees are showing outer half of lower leaves "burned" / brown. Thoughts? Too much water and/or fertilizer, or not enough of something?) @@beabutt6 Chicken droppings are high in nitrogen and can burn surface roots. Rabbit pellets or cow is best if you want to go that way otherwise use root and stem fertilizer like fish and kelp fertilizers or the products discussed in video.
Is it okay to put the k- phos at the same time as the gypsum?
Thanks much for this valuable information, unfortunately I am from Tanzania and it is very hard to have soil test here. I have questions about fertilizer and really need your advise,
1. Someone told me before that when applying commercial produced fertilizer it should be buried under the soil and not exposed to the sunlight & air as some nutrients evaporates and get loss) is this true?
2. Another Question, is it necessary to apply water just after fertilization?

For younger trees, is it advisable to clean the weeds and the grass under the tree so they don't take up the nutrients from the fertilizer? Very informative video.
It's okay, even good, to have some undergrowth,… just not excessive. Having some 'weeds' can build 'beneficial soil dynamics' if not excessive.
@Bon Summers but young trees should not have weeds as their root systems are not strong enough and the tap root has not established itself yet imo

Why even use nitrogen fertilizer, given that the biological processes at the root level are normally very adequate for available nitrogen to the mango, - mycorrhizae and so forth. Potassium is typically the most helpful addition, supposing the other elements are adequately present and available.
Many soils in our area are deficient in many nutrients.

Can I pour sugar water to my mango tree ? It's 18 years old . I didn't put any fertilizer. It's fruiting now ...but the leaves looks sick and many small ants on the tree .

We don't have any experience with clay soils. Getting your soil tested would be a good step.
For our sandy soil, we apply gypsum once or twice per year.
Gypsum use is typically a sodium-clay issue, but apparently maybe also a salts-buffer issue. But, it's fine to use Gypsum even besides that matter, though maybe not very useful, but not harmful. Soil elevation building and proper planting profile are the most important factors, along with watering and mulching, and having cover crops growing in the soil, which can also be various kinds of weeds, without being excessive, though there can be seasonal abundance and decline of the understory cover crop or weed growth.
Sulfur will convert caliche (high calcium soil) to gypsum. Even in high calcium soil, the calcium may not be available for uptake.
Plz write amount of fertiliser like as N P K and other nutrients amount and you clear how to fertiliging and when to fertiliging in descriptions .based on tree age.

The composition is listed in a comment above. Try to get slow release forms of these nutrients.
