How to Graft Mango Using Top Working, Cleft Graft, and Veneer Graft

- Grafting fruit trees is quickly becoming a very popular hobby. Even people who live in climates that don't support tropical fruit are grafting indoors and keeping the trees as house plants. In this vid we show you how to change the variety of mango on a mature tree as well as demonstrate how to use a cleft graft on a seedling.

Jorge is the real star of the show. Tovar should have his own channel.
I agree
Best grafting video I've seen yet. Right to the point without making it rocket science. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate it Armando
This is one video that I have awaiting for a long time! You gave me a hint previously about how Tovar sets the scions on the host plant. Well all of a sudden my Mango Grafts succeeded with over a 70% success rate! I’m saving this video so I can watch it over and over! Love it! Thanks Tom and Tovar!
just do me a favor and tell Joy to go easy on my when she sees I top worked her tree 🤣
I did! She gave me the evil eye!
You could tell bro has done thousands of these. Fast and effortless without any second thoughts.
He does 400 per day and he's been doing that for over 20 years

Great video.. awesome. I definitely will be calling this gentleman. Thanks

I like your fully details in your report. Small detail but very important to survival of the graft. Thanks ❤ help me to do grafting soon
Thank you
I have a mango, that I bought 2 weeks ago. It's finally ripe. Can't wait for another mango eedling.
But the mango still has some hard green spots, I get it, it's cold in the kitchen, but 12-13 days is a looot. But the majority of the green has faded to a more of a gold or dark yellow color. It smells quite a bit, it's rather soft.
awesome
It’s always a pleasure watching your videos brother!!! Very, very entertaining and educativos!!!🤙🏼🤙🏼
My sincere salutes to you sir!!!🤙🏼🤜🏼🤛🏼
We will definitely reach out to Mr, Tobar (Jorge) this summer and give him a shot at my trees so he can graft them onto my seedlings.
Thanx for your time and please keep up the good work w/these amazing videos!!
You’ve become a celebrity in my house😂🤣🤙🏼
hahahaha, it's funny you say celebrity because people are coming up to me going hey, you're that avocado guy from UA-cam 🤣
@@SleepyLizard seriously man, you get around!!!!🤙🏼😂
Great video really appreciate it thank you very much 👍🏽👍🏽🙏🏽
thanks for the compliment.
He makes it look so easy. I'm new to this and have tried 3 avocados and a about 10 on a citrus tree. None of them have been successful. =-( I'm back to sprouting new seedlings for mangos and avos. Hopefully I'll have better luck after a few more videos. 😅
Keep trying. He's done over 2 million
Great Video Thanks!
he does good work
Really enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing Tom and Noe. 🙏😎🏖🏝
he came by for a surprise visit so we whipped up a quick vid
I finally did it! I finally pruned my main avocado tree!!! I found the shears I was looking for, because normal scissors would definitely not have done the job. My avocado tree looks so small and leafless without the the 11 leaves. I mildly pruned just because it didn't have many leaves beforehand. Maybe 3 or 4 inches. It feels good. But I'm a little worried the tree is gonna magically start dying back from top down. Hopefully it starts sending out new shoots in a few weeks. The buds are orange right now, but they will activate. I put the other part of my avocado in water to try and propagate it in case if anything happens.
keep us posted
Awesome, thanks, this helps as I'll be trying my first attempt at mango grafting from my neighbor's tree
good luck. do a bunch, way more than you want...and try again if it fails the first time. it's one of them skills that take practice. you're gonna love it!
Llevaba mucho tiempo esperando el video de "jorge" o Tovar injertando mango gracias mostrarnos para poder la oportunidad de ver a este maestro
esta bien. va a volver para hacer mas aguacate
Okay, I will state the obvious. That's not Yolanda.
I was a surprised as you 🤣
It's sooooo cold. 17 degrees F. No snow though, or maybe in some corners where it was windy, but that' about it really.
Today, I pried open the shell that the mango seed was in and, it has already germinated, what! I dreamt of this exact thing happening. The soil was cold when I planted the seed, because I keep the soil out in the balcony. But I poured some relatively warm water.
I can't believe I'm casually growing avocado and mango trees, while it's prepostrerously cold outside.
I'm observing some issues with my mango tree and some of my active avocados. They've been slowing down this past week. They are still developing, but their growth is stunted. Hmmmmm... I wonder why... it definitely has nothing to do with the fact that it's so cold outside, that one of my students' phone split in half, because the display had been freezing the entire time.

Buen video se entiende bien el americano habla un buen español, saludos y bendiciones 👍😄
Gracias
So, informative! Thank you, so much, for posting!!
thank you and good luck if you do some grafting
Awesome, thank you I have learn how to graft Mango seedlings 🙏🙏
yeah, go out and give it a try.
Your content is beefy! Love it. Thanks ❤
thank you JouJou.
U guys are awesome.
thanks Wookie
Super sir good explanation .thanks
thank you
It's finally snowing again, though the snow hasn't accumulated (yet). The temps right now are in the low 20s Farenheit. The wind is extremey cold.
It's just such an unusual feeling to have tropical trees, while it's snowing and is extremely cold.
Actually, the snow is getting heavier. It's a mixture of now and sleet, but dry.
🥶
Great video and sales pitch!! Thank you!!
thanks!
Excellent lesson, excellent Spanish!
thank you

Great video for the new year. Tovar work very fast and skillful. Out here in jamaica i would have to shade the scion from the sun. Looking forward to the success of those mango grafting. Blessings.
they'll go in my shade house
Thank you for sharing this cool video about the beauty of trees. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Happy New Year. I wish you more success. ❤❤❤
happy new year Jhon.
Hablas español muy bien hermano (you speak spanish quite well my friend
Gracias 😁
By the way, my trees are indoors. I only brought them out in the balcony inSeptember for a bit. Because of the low temperatures, I brought my trees indoors. But last year, when it was below freezing outside, my trees got a bit of frost damage, despite them being indoors. My window has many tiny holes or drafts, that's what I presume. At least the wind is blowing from the other side, so it's quite in my room. Surprisingly, we won't get aaany snow, despite the temps being way below freezing.
💪
Your Spanish is amazing keep going you are awesome 😎
🤣 thank you
Muy buen video amigos. Very good interpretation
gracias
Thanks Tom....great vid
they are the best.
Thanks' for another great video! The one question I have is how much sun should I provide for the potted grafts? Is full sun too much or should I place them in a partially shaded area?
full sun is too much. shade house is preferred. no direct sun at all.
I’ve been trying waiting for the return!
Tovar comes and goes.
A cuban (i) spanglish speaker here haha. Thank you for the video
You are welcome and thank you for the comment
Excellent super work
Love 💗💞💗u both from india
thank you. hello from florida
We are also expecting some extremely low tempreratures. Today was the last warm day with temps in the low sixties. In January 14th (Sunday), the temperatures may drop below -15 degress Celsius or 5 degrees F. I can't believe it.
I must protect my avocados and 2 mangos at all costs. Opening the window for much shorter.
at those temps you gotta bring them inside
Thanks for sharing all that with us dude🙏🙏🙏 a pleasure to learn from u lovely people 🙏🙏🙏 thanks a lot. I've got 10 baby mangoes to graft soon...(in the Alpes right 🙄)pls come Tovar🙏🙏🙏🤣✌️🤘🏻
wow! I'm sure he's love to go visit you
Ty george for showing us
he's so good.
Tu español está mejorando señor Tom!Alexis.
gracias
Was very interesting. Now I just need to move to a new climate and a mango tree. Was my life long dream. 😢
Why are you not able to ship mangos to California? Bug transmission?
California has a list of fruit that they do not let in the state and mangos is on the list. I'm not sure what criteria puts a fruit on or off that list.
Excellent as always 😏😏
thank you. he does great work
Wow he’s a good grafter! Does he have a channel?
He doesn't have a channel but he might have an instagram. I'll ask him next time we talk
Great Spanish @sleepylizard ❤
gracias 😌
Thank you for the video. When that big tree was initially cut. Were all those branches on it or did they all shoot out after the trunk was cut. Thank you
they shoot after we cut, it's part of the process. you cut a few months in advance
Great .
thank you
I noticed he inserts each graft at a slight angle to make sure there is a cambium match-up at at least two points.
correct
Really nice…..please show us how successful grafts show healing after a weeks of grafting
will do. I think I have some shorts that show success from previous years.
Tremenda enseñanza

Question: Do you have to graft a mango tree? Do you have a video of how to take care of a mango tree? What fertilizer do i use gor mango trees? Thanks
some varieties of mango are polyembryonic and don't require grafting. I have some vids on my channel that talk about it. The others it's up to you...you can plant it and wait 10 years to see what you get or graft a known variety and have fruit in year 3
As for fertilizer. I use 8-3-9 in the early years then when I want fruit I use low or no nitrogen fertilizer
Mango update: From Chritmas to this weekend, my mango has grown almost a foot. It's been growning like a weed over the past 2 weeks, well kind of close to a foot. The stem is 9 inches. Compared to my previous mango that died from root rot, that had a short stem of 4 inches, I think it's a much healthier seedling. It has 6 leaves, the seventh shriveled up and died, it was tiny though. The seed is generally alive with no mold or almost any rot.
These fungus gnats seem to be the only issue. They aren't too abundant, so pretty minimal, and not seeing any of them larvae.
My main avocado tree is doing good. It haaates being dehydrated though. I think it's not root rot, or at least, not mainly root rot. I dug a tiny hole with my finger. When I reached new layer of depth it was impossible not to break a root, there were soooo many roots down there, which were thick, pale and more hydrated. I was surprised. I know that half of it's bioma is below the ground, but I thought that most of the roots have rotten like my old mango, thankfully that's not the case.
I got some taking off right now too.
Nice
the did such a great job
Great video. Is it the same procedure for avocados?
pretty much yes, you don't need the plastic bag
As tu videos en español ❤ gracias Jorge!
he's the man!
You should have emphasise that both Cambian green part has to line up perfectly for the cllef graft!
yeah, it's tough to remember everything when I'm recording a vid. thank you
very informative
thank you Dexplay
Thanks for the video! I’m looking for someone to do some graft work. Is Tovar available in the West Palm Beach area? Or does anyone know someone who is??
give him a call and see if he'll travel up your way.
That is so awesome it would be great to live there but I can't get used to the heat and humidity.
Yeah, it's nice for the next few months but July August and September can be difficult. Thank God we have mangoes to get us through that season.
Great video..
thanks. he's coming back in a few weeks to do avocado.
Thank you for doing this video! What type of tape is he using and where to get them?
it's regular grafting tape and you can get it on amazon.
@@SleepyLizard Thank you!
Wish he lived in Calfornia
He's good at what he does that's for sure
❤❤❤
💪
When is the best time to graft and once grafted should they be put in shade or fitered sunlight or sunlight
just prior to fruiting season and yes they should be put in shade.
He grafts 7 trees in the time I do one and probably has a better take rate! Skills.
yes, a lifetime of practice
Can you give us an idea how much he charges for his services? And does he work only in south Dade? Is north Broward out of his range?
no clue on either question. you'll have to ask him directly
Quick question: What is the best time or season for crafting fruit trees
depends on the type of tree.
I'm from North Queensland, Australia, tropical Queensland, at the moment it is coming to the end of summer, and I want to craft a mango an avocado on an existing mango tree , an avocado tree, just want to no when is the best time
Can i plant my avocardo in the ground after two years in central florida ocala
yep
Hi, Can the tops of the seedlings that got cut off, (The part with the leaves) Can that be used again as a cutting and regrown in a pot again ? Or is it a waste of time, And maybe not used because it won't produce fruit etc ?
it's a waste of time yes...if you graft a seedling onto a seedling you still get a seedling. The value in grafting is the cutting you take from the mature tree grows up to be a clone of that mature tree.
@@SleepyLizard Sorry, I saw another video where this guy did layering technique, So while it was still growing the bark got cut off, then the cambium layer was scraped up, And growing medium applied around trunk wound. Wrap with sanwrap & foil etc to form roots prior to cutting existing stem to create a rootstock .
So can't this be grown as another rootstock to graft another variety onto it ?
@@Sam-lk6eo I'm not sure what you're asking, sorry about that
Which season and what temperature is shotuble for mango grafting
spring and summer
What tape do you use, every tape I order is just like a mini roll of the Saran Wrap
I don't know the brand. I'll have to pay more attention next time I get it..just grafting tape
I might have missed the time of year you are doing this graft. When is a good time of the year to graft mango and avocado?
good time of year would have been September/October. we are late with these.
Do you sell the Ford variety mango tree? I would be interested in buying a few for my personal collection. I have a Lancetilla that gives large mangos and I love it, but it’s done by August.
I have one left if you wanna come get it.
@@SleepyLizard just sent you an email
Amazing
fascinating isn't it?
@@SleepyLizard oh yes
How long does it take for grafts to grow?…I did a Valencia Pride and 3 weeks no sign…I stold that cutting from a nursery right here in California but I think my graft is cursed.
it could sprout in a few weeks, sometimes a month or more. It's very disrespectful to take a pruner to other people's trees, you not only stole a cutting that wasn't yours but you also altered the way that branch will grow. with mango we tip the branches to maximize fruit production.
@@SleepyLizard yeah bro GOD convicted me of it...but if takes and grows to produce mangoes ... should I not eat them?
I’m in south end of st. Lucie county, where is he located? Looking to do some grafts.
We are in Homestead FL
Hi can you please update about graft success done in container plants of mango
with this guy it's 100%. he's amazing
@@SleepyLizard sir do a video about graft success done in container plants because i want do same as you have done
is there a video update on the grafts?
No. But I need to do that next time I graft a batch. Lots of people want to see the ongoing progress in the months immediately after.
Where do you get the clear plastic bags Tom?
I don't know. my buddy who owns a nursery gave me a boxful
