Mesa, Revv, KSR, Omega - Amp Shootout

  • I am shooting out 4 of my high gain amps. The goal with each was to attempt to dial in a high gain metal tone. All 4 amps are quite different, we start on 5s to show the natural character of the amp, and dial in from there.
    2:10 - Dual Rectifier - Rev F
    7:10 - Revv 100p
    12:45 - KSR Juno - Lead Mode
    18:55 - KSR Juno - Clip Mode
    23:15 - Omega Obsidian

    Anthony,
    I got to say thank you for this video.
    Also, it doesn't matter if we are great players or not. You have more guts than most of us to be playing in front of a camera.

    The Revv sounds like how I wanted a rectifier to sound.

    The Revv and KSR seemed to have the thicker mids. Mesa was least fave. Really cool demo, man. Thank you!

    Between the exact Revv and Powered by Omega, if you had to buy one first all over again which one would it be? I'm stuck in between both of these amps and I believe they both would do the same job really well. My amp background starts with the Triple Rectifier and I actually want something with a nasty, growling tone kinda similar to a 5150 on steroids as far as the upper mid range punch those have. But my issue with 5150 is they sound very dull and thin to my taste. My application is mainly just playing for enjoyment and occasionally jamming with others

    The noise @ 4:30 can be eliminated by putting a mute on the strings between the nut and the tuning pegs. Foam, a hairband, or a FretWrap will do the trick.

    Great, real world comparison Anthony. Most demos are unrealistic, in that there are complex signal chains from professional players so that you have no idea what the actual sound would be for the average (me, below) player would get from the xyz amp.

    Nice video! Congrats @AnthonyBest but I am a bit confused. You have 4 100W+ heads on at the same time connected to OX how? You have a switcher? If yes, isn't this dangerous for the amp? Because the OX only works as a load box when an amp is connected to it, so when you have selected for example the dual rectifier then the other amps are not connected to any load. Isn't this dangerous for the amps?

    • @itsanthonybest
      @itsanthonybest  4 роки тому +4

      The KHE puts a dummy load on the unused heads. The OX provides a load for the head in use. This is perfectly safe. Take a look at KHE Amps switchers!!!

    I would love to see a high gain amp shoot out with Wizard, KSR, Mezzabarba, Dover, and Diezel. These amps except for Diesel do not have modeled profiles that I am aware of for Kemper or Fractal or Helix. Maybe I need to save up and do a shoot out like this?

    • @itsanthonybest
      @itsanthonybest  4 роки тому +3

      Well I have a Dover on the way... but i likely won't do a full shootout again, i may revisit a few of these amps in their own videos...

      @@itsanthonybest Sure thing buddy! Anyways, I just bought two new high gain amps- a Mezzabarba MZero and Bogner Uberschall Twinjet and very happy with both. So crushing with amazing note clarity and articulation. Not sure what to get next? Perhaps a KSR Gemini or Diezel Herbert? It really comes down to what amp would mix well with these two amps yet offer unique tones to complement them. With the MZero, I can do rock, blues, jazz to metal. The Uberschall is more modern metal chugging.

    Hi bud i just found your channel. Cool collection you got. I pre ordered a revv 120 mk iii. But im curious about the obsidian. They cost the same. Which is better for extreme metal and better clean channel for my fuzzes. Thanks

    • @itsanthonybest
      @itsanthonybest  2 роки тому

      Honestly man they are just different. One. It better than the other. The clean channel on the revv will likely do better for fuzz pedals… more headroom but either would be good.
      And for extreme metal the revv is tighter on the purple channel but the Obsidian has a kick unlike any other amp.
      Both great just different

      I mean thats a really tough thing to QUANTIFY... I would say the Mesa because its probably the LOUDEST. But the KSR is the one that has the biggest kick in the chest type of feeling.
