All your hindsight points are great but my favorite part is the singing at the end. Lol
Haha! They were being a little ridiculous in the background. That’s just my typical day. 😂😂
When does the album drop
Some through dowels would look slick, try getting some brass tubing and put a dowel in side it and use that to pin the work together (if using metal use an appoxy to glue them). Nice job 👍
Mame by
Don't you mean "ALOL"
Miter, finger, or even single dovetail joint. I would think that whatever joint you choose it be your design preference and thanks love watching you.
Thanks so much!
6:23 "This one time, at band clamp…"
Did you make the knife blocks in the background?
Nope
Amazing project Tamar!!
I would make miter joints and use something like maple splines for accenting & reinforcement.
(So gonna make one of these into a Challa board!!)
Awesome! That’s what we’re using it for! Shabbat Shalom!
I had a feeling :-D Shabbat Shalom!!
Para fazer lanches é bom
Is your planer sled a board with a piece of fabric to take up the wobble? Because that’s fantastic. And I know the pain of having to use a table saw to resaw, I milled some 8/4 birch today, 6 feet long, super scary
It’s not fabric it’s a grip mat. Like for cabinets. Not my own idea. Got it from Colin Kinect
3x3Custom - Tamar that’s a great idea! I’ll have to try it, thanks!
I would use miter joints and splines, and as you said, half laps. And yes, sand before assembly... I often forget to do that also, so don't feel alone, or feel bad about it. It's happened to all of us. Thanks for the video!
Thanks! Yes! I always just feel rushed to get a project finished that I overlook some of those things. Hopefully I can remember for next time!
I find it's 'habit thing' for me... So I'm trying to get into the 'habit' of stopping between steps and evaluating what I need to do next. It makes me slow down and think a bit. I also break down the various steps and write them out in a note and refer back to the notes. It might not work for everyone, but it works for me most of the time. Great project!
I usually do best when I have notes. Didn’t have notes on this one...
Definitely miters with splines in a contrasting colour
Safety police are the worst! I appreciate your realness as you speak, and the finished product here looks stellar!
Haha! I just have to call em out... thanks!
This is a great idea. I would probably make the crumb catcher base butcher block style so I could flip it over and have 2 kinds of cutting boards in one.
That would be cool. Thanks!
The only problem with that is it would be really extra thick and heavy then....
@@rickbodick6812 - surely heavier, but not too heavy to pick up and turn over?
Nice. It's worth exploring.
It's almost been a year, I wonder how this project is holding up and how often it gets used. Great project!
It gets used every week and it’s still in great shape 😉
Great project! I think I would’ve used box joints in the corners!
Thanks! I think that would look great
3x3Custom - Tamar also, are your overalls carhartt? Where did you get them?
Yup! Strait from the carhartt website
Freaking GREAT cutting board!
Thanks so much!
Nice project!
I love fresh bread))
Thanks! Me too
I love that you make small mistakes and leave them in the videos, shows your human, it’s how we all learn. Your videos are really informative and you explain things easily. Keep it up.
Your VO is awesome! Subbed, thanks for checking out my channel and my desk build as well! Quickly catching up on your content, GREAT WORK!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the feedback! You’re work is pretty awesome too
I love you. Especially when you call out the safety police. The board is gorgeous!
Haha! Thanks so much Sam! Someone still commented that I need to roll up my sleeves.... 🙄
Those are beautiful and awesome.
Thanks!
Miter joints and oak splines would really set it off. I think also that I would make the box out of walnut and the slats out of oak. The color contrast would be very nice.
Really detailed build. End product looks great!
Thanks so much! Really appreciate that
"The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" is a great book. (And the bread board looks great, too!)
Ha! It is a great book! And thanks!
I love the project and your style of video. I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much! Working on getting some more videos done!
Very cool. I've been planning to make something similar to put under my coffee grinder for easier cleanup.
That’s a great idea!
If you cannot use a bread knife for a square cut then stay well away from hand saws.
Hardwood faced ply would be the correct base.
Avoid the brads--rust. Use 3mm dowels or a shallow 'halving joint at the corners to stop wracking.
You live in a different world. Walnut is for cabinet making. I cry when you turn cubic feet of beautiful hardwood into test pieces.
Butt joints are fine. How about using through dowels at corners from face grain board into end grain board? Maybe 2 per corner....proportionately smaller than yours? And it gives a nice contrasting accent.
Both turned out awesome! It’s alwys easy for us building to find the imperfections but those that receive it hardly ever do. I just made a coffee table and pointed out a few areas and my wife said she had no idea any of those things were even visible. 😂 Great job again Tamar!!
I’m def my own worst critic. Thanks!!
Ha, we all have those things we can see but others don't, so don't ever tell them but don't let me round, as a lifetime decorator you never lose the eye for faults. :-)
Oh, you could mitre the corners and use splines?
That’s a good option
Never mind the content (which is great), but living in central NC where it does not snow much…it’s COOL watching the snow outside during the video
Great project idea, eventually I’d like to have one for myself. The one I make for myself I want to do the top slats in oposite direction so that you can cut your bread between the slats.
Hey Tamar do you have plans for this cutting board? I would buy them. Thanks.
You: "Hey friend, I noticed you had crumbs all over the counter the last time you were cutting bread."
Friend: "yeah...."
You: "So I made you this super fancy anti-crumb cutting board so you don't have to be a Savage."
Friend: "umm....thanks?"
Ha. That would be awkward. Except. I didn’t notice it. They were complaining about it. So we’re all good :)
That was funny. A little humor is always good.
I'm years late, but it's still funny.
I wish to have your "problem" of having a gigantic piece of a walnut board and not knowing what to do with it... I have to do veneering on a pine instead.
I would mitre the corners and then use two maple or even brass splines on each corner for accents. Very nice. I saved this project for a future build.
Awesome. Sounds cool
Another great video. Where do you get those nice thick maple and walnut boards from?
Thanks! My local hardwood dealer and craigslist.
what are the things called you located the holes to drill, the dimple dies, you put them in the holes of one piece to transfer to your work to get them dead on? I've been searching everywhere for them lol you use them at 5:39 in your video
Love this idea!! Wondering how it's held up for your friend 5 years later?
this is one of the best woodworking/maker type shows. your a natural at this.
You just made my day! Thanks!
Great project!!! And I don't think you needed the brass. All your other thoughts were spot on.
And can I steal this project? 😁
Thanks! Steal away! And share it with me when you do!
Honestly, I think you did a good job. When I took my wood working class in highschool several years ago, we made prototypes like that. Typically something that you don't know will work (the joints in your case) we would stress test it. Drop it on the ground or bang it around in a sink. If it falls apart it's a bad design and you don't have to worry about getting embarrassed from your family saying, "yeah my kid dropped it and the joints cracked and fell out." I'm not saying it's a problem, but in the future stress testing something is a good practice for homemade kitchenware. Looks beautiful. If it's strong enough to hold from cutting a sour dough baguette, it could stand anything!
Thanks! I’ll let me kids bang it around a few times next time. 😂
Brilliant chip catcher on your planer!
Can’t take credit for it. The idea is from ibuildit. But to be honest. It’s not a perfect solution. It only works well till the bin is like half full. And then it spews chips everywhere. But that’s always mid project! Ha
Hi good video!
What feather baord did you use on your table saw?
Thanks! I use the feather pro. I heard the hedgehog one is good though
3x3Custom - Tamar Thanks. I'll check them out bc I need one!
Alright!!! I've missed my favorite wood worker. 😆 Very nice build!! And I just love how you don't edit out "overlooks". You keep it real, GREAT JOB and Video!!! Don't wait so long next time, .jk LOL! 😂.Take care and God Bless!!
Thanks so much!!! It WAS way too long! Too many family things were going on and it was killing me that I couldn’t get this finished! Hopefully the next one will come out sooner
Coming from a guy that doesn't do much cooking at all I think this is a great idea. Maybe those that do cook have seen a bread cutting board like this before but I had not. Nice job and the helpful hints at the end are great.
Thanks so much. I saw it at a restaurant. It’s def not my original idea. Just had to figure out a way to replicate it.
They turned out beautiful! I love how much you’re learning and appreciate the new techniques you’re trying out. I personally didn’t notice any issues with the audio quality.. I guess I figure you’re doing these for free (moms don’t have much time) so the last thing I would do is be critical! Good work Tamar!
Thanks so much Danielle! Yeh. It’s hard to fit the time in to get these done! Really appreciate the feedback! I love the learning process...
@@3x3CustomTamar Huzzah for learning! And it seems like you've learned quite a lot already... I'm learning, too. :)
David Lindes huzzah!!!
Hi, I miss Tamar's work. Did she stop working or what?
At the 3:13 mark, why are you inside? Isn't their a hill nearby that needs routing?
I'm a woodworker and baker and I loved this. I'm 100% making this. I mean, I think you are right...half laps are the way to go. Maybe a nice finger joint on the box?
Awesome. Sounds good to me!
This is s Great idea! Miter joints (reinforced with splines) would be a viable option on the main frame but perhaps 1/4" finger joints would be a nice visual enhancement which would tie in with the visual of the inner grid. A quarter lap in the grid work would add add'l strength as well as make your glue up easier. When my current "to-do" list is complete, I'm going to make one of these. Thanks for sharing this!
Awesome! Would love to see it when you do!
Thank you, Tamar for mentioning to keep the same face against the fence when splitting wide boards in half as you did! That is the first I have ever heard to do that!! I wondered why my splitting boards hadn't turned out so great & now thanks to you, I know!!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
Yes exactly the same problem for me.
I think everyday woodworkers forget the simple things and assume everyone knows them.
Genius cutting board! What a great gift for someone! Most important thing after a good knife or three / chopping boards and cutting boards! Next up! Custom Kitchen Knife block!! (apologies if there is a video already! See the two kitchen knife blocks behind you!)
I havnt made one of those yet!
Built one for my son who makes bread on a weekly basis. I agree that the grid glue up is challenging. For future builds I’ll build a jig. I already have one sketched up. Great idea I had fun building it. Thanks.
I’ve been wanting to rebuild this and make some modifications to how it was done.
I am a big fan of dovetail miter joints, but maybe a little overboard for such a small wood width. Plywood is OUT! There is no such thing as food-safe plywood. It's the chemicals in the adhesive that you need to worry about. I think using a half-lap joint in the slats and their supports would be a fun madness project. But, make a jig for the correct spacing. Otherwise, you'll need a few hours afterwards with some calming hot tea...
Ha! I’m always down for some tea 😂😂
You asked about what kind of joints we’d suggest for the corners - I like box joints, especially very narrow ones (aka finger joints). Maybe those would look nice? I loved your project!! I think seeing the grain pattern on the slats is really cool. Great work!
I love finger joints too. I’ve been getting a lot of requests for this board so maybe I’ll try that. Thanks!
Looks like you got away without any planer snipe. Any tips?
center 3rd is the right way to glue up the end grain of a cutting board
Nice little project, really like your vids keep them coming!
Thanks so much! I’ll get on that
Currently, my favorite joint isn't a recognized joint ( or maybe just not acknowledge technique). I simply drill a 45 degree hole at the corner and run a dowel through. I scar the dowel so the glue has something to grip. It's essentially a round spline. After sanding, it looks rather elegant.
I get ya. That sounds pretty cool
IMHO the corners would look good with 1/4" box joints. Great gift idea tho'. Maybe leave the bottom thick and be able to flip it over and use the bottom as a regular cutting board?
I think both of those ideas are great
Given the design perhaps box/finger joints would look good and still keep it simple. Spline reinforced miter with cherry spline would look good as well me thinks :-)
Agreed!
Great job, nice gift for someone.
I like the solid wood better than plywood. I think the plywood would soak up to much and separate.
I also feel because it will be in a relatively climate controlled environment the glue up won’t impact as bad. If it was outdoor furniture then you might have to be more cautious.
Again nice job, I might make one for my wife as a little gift!
Thanks! We use it every week ☺️
lucky the bread was being eaten with those cuts 🤣🤣
never glue a panel in a frame. it will expand in both direction
Nice job that is a neat idea. Do a miter and then put splines in it would be cool contrasting wood.
Thanks! Miter mike suggesting a miter! It would look cool
Great project. I definitely want to make it. What about orienting the slats with the direction that you’re cutting. That would be perpendicular to the way you have them oriented. I’m just thinking it would be better for wear, less cut marks if you cut with the grain.
An interesting thought
I would use finger joints. But that's just me.
Miter joint is fine, although they can be finicky to cut,, splines of contrasting wood colors would look nice. Bridal joints would look good as well and provide lots of glue up area. Also letting the sides purposely overhang would not look so bad. Miter joints will show you when your wood is not squared, lol.. I know this as fact,, in my own experiences... for your build, of what we see Tamar, these were a success. I would suggest one addition, get your favorite bread knife, lie it inside on the bottom.. trace the outline, rout out this outline, then place the bread knife into this routed out area and place the cutting board surface on top. This allows you to,stow away the knife and board at the same time. Your push button dowel could be again utilized to pop the top off and back on again.
That sounds like a really awesome idea. Something I’ll def have to try!
Great project! I would suggest dovetails on the frame corners. Plywood sounds good but it would have to be exterior grade in case someone washes it in the sink. Exterior plywood isn't very attractive. You were correct in gluing the center only of the solid wood.
Thanks! Dovetails would look great but I haven’t attempted them yet. Def on my list of skills to try!
Nice project. What joint? Good question, miter joints or fingerjoints.
Nice snowy NJ winter. Ah go down the memory lane.
Thanks! Finger joints would be cool. Yeah.... it’s cold here. Ha
Great job Tamar! Great idea! As for possibly using plywood, that might not be a good choice, as there may be times you’ll want/need to wash the board and then it could swell and get all wonky and possibly start to separate. Just my 2 cents.
Good point
Nice looking project! I would think plywood would delamanate after awhile and I know of no true water resistant plywood you would want on the counter. Miters at the corners would likely open up but you could try spines for reinforcement. Also you could have glued the sides since the grain runs in the same direction as the board. Keep at it ,your personality and positive attitude Will win you fans!
Thanks so much! Thanks for the tips!
nice idea would like to make and add it to my shop!.
I would do- if possible - finger or edge cross lap maybe?.
anyway lovely and great show, hope the family loves it too.
Thanks! We use it every week ☺️
hey there, wood working is very rewarding, but beware of the dust, walnut is toxic, enjoy your vids.🔨📐👍
Thanks! If you saw my Instagram stories today, you’d see what I wear while sanding.... it may be a bit overkill... ha.
I like this style of cutting board, and I am now thinking of making one for an Xmas present. Just thinking that it would also be great for resting those roasted joints. I suspect the dado/groove cut will cause juices to leak out. Any thoughts if that is the case and recommendations to adjust the design to prevent it?
Yeah. I wouldn’t use this to rest meat. I would be concerned about too much liquid being in the bottom
for how many DIY channels there are, its nice to see someone who actually knows what joinery is and how to make nice things.
Glad you like it ☺️
Great video and awesome project! New sub and I really enjoy your videos. Keep them real. I look forward to seeing new videos!
Thanks so Much! Thanks for watching, can’t wait to make more!
Very nice, makes me miss woodworking and wood as a material. It is such an awesome product and just beautiful. Neat result! Now I want some good bread too :(.
Ha! Thanks! This bread was awesome.
Such a cool project, great video. I made a board for toasts so I guess this could be a nice addition to my project list ;)
Thanks! Would love to see that!
I like the way your videos speed up but your narration stays normal speed ! I'm a metal working guy but had 4 years of woodshop in high school. I did a lot a lot of lathe turning in HS. Besides lathe, I enjoyed making Bandsaw Boxes-they are fun & easy
Thanks for the feedback! I haven’t made a bandsaw box yet. But they look like fun!
I would use a miter joint
There are many different ways to get a job done and I tend to not judge which one is best and the best path to take is the one you feel most comfortable with.
My 2 cents on finishes are good to use is I steer clear of oil finishes as they will not cure like other finishes and many of the oils can and will go rancid which is never a good thing. Once a finish is fully cured any finish is food safe. One finish I highly recommend is Tung Oil. Make sure you use pure Tung Oil and you have to read the labels because many finished calling themselves as Tung Oil are actually a blend of other finishes that have some Tung Oil in them but are not the same or as good as the real pure Tung Oil. Tung Oil comes from the nut that grows on the Tung tree that is native to China. It is super easy to apply, simply apply with a cloth and let it completely dry between coats and it will build into a nice finish that is unaffected by sun or weather.
Keep up the nice projects.
Thanks!
I decided to cut carbs from my diet, but after this, I'm totally inspired to make one Bread Cutting Board of my own and eat a lot of bread. Lol I was wondering if I can use pine for this?
Ha! That’s too funny. I’m sure you can. It will just scratch and dent more easily.
Baking bread,woodworking,
raising children.Where can you find a woman like that?
I didn’t make that bread. Ha.
Really good project well executed. I must say it is refreshing to see a female doing videos and not hyper sexualizing it for views. You are clearly a woodworker who knows what you are doing and shares a project without any of the other BS we can all do without. Well done.
If I could leave myself out of my videos. I would.
I never knew a bread board cutting board existed! Thanks for the video! Looks like it works super well!
I saw it in a hotel and knew I needed to recreate it! Thanks!
Cracked me up the comment about glue cure inside, my poor family has been dealing with my cutting board glue ups all month, lol
Hahah! My kitchen it usually filled with glue ups
That is a nice bread cutting board, for the question on the corner joints, I would use box joint or finger joint now if you really want to make it special you could use dovetails, also on the cutting board you could use half lap joints no brads need it.
Thanks! I think box joints would look great
Hey so over 3 years later, hows the bottom panel holding up, I'm really tempted to make a similar design but I'm worried about the bottom panel
We still use it every week!
Thank you for the great project, if only you mentioned the dimensions of the Board and slides (L, W, Thickness)
That info is on the full written article on my website. Linked in the description
please don't apologise for making mistakes, it is very helpful to see them and helps us learn just as much as showing us the right way to do it :)
Is wood glue ok for things like this when it might be a piece that is subject to water often and boiling water at that?
All just lessons learned.... yup. It’s waterproof glue. I wouldn’t put it in a dishwasher though. Just regular sink, soap and water is fine. Like a cutting board.
Yeah I would definitely go with mitres instead of butt joints. Might also be cool to have stronger contrasting woods between the tray and the rack, with mitre splines on the tray using the same type of wood as the rack.
I think that’s the way I’ll do it next time
Repeat after me: whatever mistakes I make, someone with more experience and skill has made much worse mistakes than me. Mistakes are the genesis of experience. Experience is the precursor to expertise. Love your channel.
Couldn’t agree more. Mistakes are all a part of the learning process. Thanks so much!!
Dado is w/in the board. Rabbet is on the perimeter.
Miter with 1-2 splines for the corner.
Nice work. This is a great idea. I agree that glue in the middle is a good idea. I do this and it works out great. I tend to give the tounge going into the groove a bit of room to move. I think solid wood works great because I wouldn’t be afraid to wash it off. Plywood may not act nice if it gets wet while cleaning the crumb tray.
Thanks for the insight Brian! Yeh I totally didn’t think about washing plywood....
Very nice and well done. If you don't mind my asking what are the dimensions of the board and would you mind if I steal your idea for my wife?
Thanks. I believe I posted them on my website on the article for this build
I love these becuase their real. and start me thinking about joints. and my own projects.
Awesome
That looks completely professional. You could sell those boards, I'd buy one.
Thanks! I’ve gotten a lot of requests for them. So that might be a possibility. ☺️
for the corners of the board, a 45-degree miter with maple splines would look great. I love the contrast of dark walnut with lighter wood.
Totally agree. Would look great
Are pocket hole screws acceptable for the corners? Also curious if the knife cuts the cutting board by accident after it's finished
If you like pocket screws go for it. And yes, the knife cuts into the wood, its all scratched up, but I like that lived in look.
Have you thought about doing the slats going vertical, the short way. That way the serrated knife wouldn't cut the fibers of the wood and you could cut through the bread easily. Just a thought.
I did it this way because we went to a restaurant and the board was this way. But I’m sure rotating them would be cool too.
You are definately a Mountain Woman, but in the Valley. I know your gonna take care of that.....
Hahah!
