    We have one of these that we bought in Estes Park more than 20 years ago. We still use it. We are also one of the few couples that still uses our bread machine...a few times a year anyway. Now I can make bread knives for my whole family and use up some of those scraps you were talking about this morning. haha. 😁🤣

    Shame that the blades are no longer available (or at least not available to me in the UK), but thank you for another great video, James.
    Brass screws - plenty of them available here in the UK (I use Westfield Fasteners; they don't list US as a destination they serve, but I'd be happy to re-ship things out if it helps).

    Mum used to have a 'production' type Bread Knife with one of those gross green handles and an adjustable steel fence except the fence kept on moving.
    The sliced bread joke was a bit dough, it hadn't really risen to the occasion today, lmao

    Really enjoy your videos, James. This is a great, reasonably easy, project that I might be able to handle following your well-thought out instructional. The bread knives would also make great gifts. One thing about the carbon steel blade, however: it will rust . Perhaps not an issue unless washed and water doesn't dry beneath the mounted area. Also, mineral oil, dietary-safe, would work as a finish, and waxed with bees wax to add some shine.

    Nice little project.
    Idea: make a curved handle instead of a straight one. So your hand is higher than the surface you're cutting on. This would be easier when you get to the bottom of the bread slice.
    Also, you can go nuts and make an adjustable fence.

    Funny thing. I work in a bakery and we have a gravity slicer that needs the blades changed out occasionally . I lucked out and was working when it happened recently. Asked the technician what they did with the old blades and he said they just toss them. So I grabbed them and was wondering what to do with them. Now I know. :)

  • @vallodholm
    @vallodholm 3 роки тому +1

    Looks like it doesn't cut all the way to the cutting board, do you think you could extend the blade a bit farther without compromising the joint between the blade and the handle?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  3 роки тому +1

      Yes. For this first one I drove the holes just a hair too high. I needed to drill about a 16th inch lower so that the teeth would reach the bottom. I fixed that on the later version.

    Just wanted to let you know. Enjoyed he bread knife episode. Thought I would make some for gifts. If have a nice piece of maple board that a friend gave me that would be perfect for this project. Went to your link and found "currently unavailable don't know when or if they will be in stock". Went searching and found they are usually sold in sets of like 32 pieces at a substantia cost. Found a company that sold individual blades for about $4.50 each. Ordered 3 blades, about $13. However, their least expensive shipping charge was bout $26. Needless to say I did not order them. If I ever find an affordable source for these blades I will order them and make some of these for gifts. This is not a complaint it's just an observation. I still really enjoyed this little project.

    Why didn’t you use a circle saw to cut the corner curves first?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  2 роки тому +1

      A circular saw with a brace is an absolute pain. It can be done but it's really slow. I could do it with auger bit but because the board is so thin the auger bit might split it out.

    • @samsmythe2207
      @samsmythe2207 2 роки тому

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo The splitting of the wood makes sense. I think I would have planned two knives at the same time and used twice the width of wood. Drill pressed the circles out and then fine tuned the rest after splitting the wood to form two knives. You can see how much I’d want to avoid carving the concave, LOL.
