I'm a substitute teacher and if teachers gave me HALF of the info you have in that binder I would feel so blessed. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of detail and thoroughness in sub plans. imagine your sub has never even set foot in your building before, and explain things accordingly. because I often have never set foot in the building before, and even individual teachers within a school are so so different. I am always confused about SOMETHING. in addition, ~please~ talk to your students about respecting subs. substitute teachers are still teachers. the students and the subs need to be clear about behavior expectations!
Jordan Epstein they were just giving some suggestions-not even specifically at her but at other teachers too. These are things most people don’t think about and as a future educator, I certainly wouldn’t have.
I never realized how many young children there are with access to UA-cam until I read the comments on this video!! Seven year olds scrolling through UA-cam videos, oh my! I'm so glad you put out such wonderful, positive content.
2 things that are HEAVEN for a sub and I RARELY if ever see them. 1 - a current seating chart 2 - a student roster with photos of each child. (This is exceptionally nice and prevents kids from lying about who they are.) Can I also say, substituting is a disrespected job. It sure would be nice if the staff were friendly, helpful, and welcoming. I've seen entire lunch tables cleared out to stay away from subs, as well as teams who should be welcoming and offering help scatter to the wind. I'm a really good sub, and I can handle any situation that comes up. But God help those subs who are not prepared or don't really know what they're doing.
one year my class was notorious for switching names during subs. so i included a class picture in the sub plans. let’s just say that they changed really quick
This gives me flashbacks to when I was 22, fresh out of college and walking into high school classes with NO sub plans. No rosters, nothing. 😬 Let’s just say that I learned really quickly not to pass around a blank piece of paper to take attendance. But, on the positive side, it taught me in my own classroom to always leave detailed information for my subs. 👍🏻 These are great tips, especially about setting an alarm to remind yourself to update the folder throughout the school year.
My roommate last year was jealous of how detailed I left my plans from your template and she used sticky notes! lol. i cannot wait for your video on how you make your Google slides backgrounds and stuff.
Having been a substitute for the past year and a half- I love teachers with lesson plans like yours. the best classes were always teachers who had seating charts and great sub plans! Thanks for the great ideas.
I actually don’t mind making sub plans!! I have a template so it makes it really easy to fill in the blanks for whole group time and center time. It’s also helpful to have a substitute that you always use. Also, it’s great to keep in mind that if you (the teacher) had to write a note about your day everyday, it would probably look a lot like a sub’s note. One lady that always subs for me actually has her own sub note paper that is carbon copy paper!!! I think that is brilliant because she can keep a copy for herself and one for me.
This seems super helpful! I can’t tell you how many times substitute teachers have been confused because a teacher only left them a single note. This seems so organized, and it would definitely make a substitute feel more relaxed and comfortable in the classroom!
I have been teaching for 3 years, and I am still in my route to licensure program, and your video was used in one of my courses! I just want to say that in my three years of teaching I have never seen such amazingly planned sub plans!! I love it and you are amazing!!! Will be following you for more wonderful ideas! ❤
As a former teacher and a current sub, thank you for offering such detailed recommendations for teachers to follow. Often, I’m looking for specific transition attention getters that work with a class, wishing that teachers left more than just worksheets, and trying to figure out some log ins or passwords right before the attendance is due. Your plans are gorgeous and I’d be thrilled to walk Into a classroom like yours to work.
I really love your videos. I am at year 4 and am trying to work over the summer to be prepared for next year. I have looked at your class tour and love how organized you are. You have lots of things you need but don't think about until you are in the middle of things. You are a good lead teacher. Think about a video for a brand new teacher who is just walking into a classroom for the first time and is not sure what she or he will need.
I am a high school special Ed student in Vermont that is blind and visually impaired. Thank you for sharing this wonderful / amazing tips. I enjoy watching all your teacher vlogs / videos. It so tru that you find what works for you.
Regarding #11: Leave a slide show. My district does not allow subs to have computer access, so I print out the slides and have the sub show via Elmo and projector. Just a suggestion. Keep these helpful videos coming!
I am a substitute teacher right now and currently earning my teaching degree. Thank you so much for uploading this video. In my experience so far one of the most difficult things is when I am left little to no plans. I wish all the teachers I subbed for were as organized as you.
You are amazing! I've been teaching for 22 years, and I still don't think of all the details you do for every aspect of teaching! Your depth of understanding of the whole pedagogy of teaching is truly outstanding!
It is wonderful that you cover so many topics. Very organized! I taught 30 years and subbed for four. So I appreciate you! If I may be so bold, May I challenge you to cut the reading in half and change most to bullet points and fewer words per line making them easier to read quickly. Also add tabs so subs can quick flip to the info. Put the emergency info first. When substitutes and their students ave been killed, it was in the first few minutes of the day. Make sure your subs are given keys and know exactly where to hide and put students before the front doors even open. I'm sure you get good feedback because most teachers leave very very little and you include all the important sections! Don't leave too much to read in a total of 10-15 minutes. I have seen quite a few of your videos and you are a great teacher.
I tell you what’s exciting and that’s subbing in a middle-school computer class only to discover the state website on which ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS are posted is down. I ended up borrowing a library book from a student in one class and reading aloud to them. Since it was first block, on a Monday, none of them even had assignments from other classes to work on. Fortunately the website came back online a couple of hours into the day, though it kept disappearing sporadically. Absolutely maddening, and I felt bad for the students.
I'm glad you are organized. It definitely helps. As a substitute teacher, I wish more teachers were organized especially with telling me what classroom management strategies they use.
As a sub, this binder is amazing. I've subbed for teachers who don't even leave plans for the day. The only thing I worry about with this is not having enough time to read through everything before the kids come in and the chaos begins 😂
When I was observing in a classroom for one of my college classes I experienced a sub who didn't have enough information and how poorly it went. This is so perfect!
Each teacher at our school had to make a sub binder years ago. Of course now it's up to us to keep it updated just as you suggested. Another good point, my team and I also made a week's worth of lessons (basic/generic/review) along with 25 copies of each to be "housed" in that sub binder. This way if we had an unforeseen emergency and didn't have lesson plans or sub plans we could use those as a standby until we were able to get sub plans prepared or lessons from our co-teachers to help out. Hope this gives another idea to add to your own sub binder. One never knows when an emergency/accident happens and god bless it never does!
I only tell my advanced class when I know I'll be out. They tend to plan a way to get work done and even get ahead on other work. My other classes tend to plan tricks. Middle school is interesting.
Thanks, Michelle for uploading these helpful videos. Have you ever thought about becoming an Ed professor? You provide such relevant and instructional information, I think you'll be great at it.
I wish all teachers used this template! As a sub, those details are incredibly helpful!! You are my FAV. Cant wait to use all your tips when I am a teacher! Please keep the tips coming!
I’m in the 4th grade and my teacher had a Kahoot quiz for us as a brain break, and we loved it. Maybe you could do one with your classes, and if they like it you can set one up for your sub to do with your classes to do?
As a sub of two years, your sub binder and sub plans are the best that I have ever seen!!! Also, totally agree with tip 7. Too many times, I have been expected to teach the students something new and had no idea how to do so.
Recently I was out for an extended period of time, and honestly so horribly sick that it was a miracle that any sub plans were made at all. Any tips on making ready emergency plans that don’t require much effort or time when you physically can’t put any effort or time into them?
I'm 29 and starting to entertain thought of becoming a teacher. I wanted to be a teacher since I was a wee kid and I'm thinking if Im still having these thoughts, that may it is worth it. Love your videos!!
My teacher in highschool, would give is a packet of things to keep us busy it was always busywork and it kept us busy while she was gone and it was always just like book work or watching a movie with a quiz, or something we already know but if we acted up she would atcually grade it but if we didnt she give us a while to do it and then she give us an a for effort basically
I've been subbing all year and would love to sub for you! It's so hard when teachers don't leave enough work or enough info about how things usually run so you have to go on the students' word! You're so organized!
Your sub binder is so organized and you've thought of everything. So thoughtful to leave the substitute something to say thank you- they do not have an easy role! My biggest challenge is that I teach in French, and more often than not the sub does not know French, so I have to leave things they can do with no help, and that I can easily translate for the sub without overwhelming them
You posted this video right on time! Next week I'll be leaving my class to a sub for a week, and thanks to your tips, now I know what to prepare beforehand. Thanks, Michelle!
Excellent! I actually subbed a class where the teacher used your templates! I took pictures of it all because I loved it. Now I am going to buy it from your TPT store for my class!!!
I am subbing right while finishing my education degree. I would be in heaven if I walked in and saw the ready and waiting on the desk for me. I can’t tell you how many times I have gone into a classroom and had NOTHING! It drives me crazy.
OMG! I cannot stress how much likes I want to give your video. It is one they should show all teachers! As a current substitute, I nodded my head so much with your various tips, wishing the teachers I sub for could just listen. I do understand things come up last minute, but the majority of the jobs I've accepted were at least a few days in advance, so they should have that time to be prepared. (Maybe if all teachers were subs first, they'd understand the little things that help make a day more smoothly.) I think one thing I would alter on your tips is in regards to behavior - if a student has a known issue, it is helpful to know that (like if they can be violent or on a behavior plan). I know that with legal things, not all teachers can share 504 and IEP info, but if it can impact learning, or a test needs to be modified, or maybe the student speaks little English and often works with another student, those type of things are useful for us to at least be aware of. Also, I love how you put when your aide comes in. There are so many times when aides would enter the room to work with a group, or someone pulls a kid, or the kids are telling me they go somewhere, and the teacher made zero mention of this. It's frustrating to have that unexpected interruption, and you're not always sure the kid is telling the truth. We don't have access to laptops for the two districts I sub in, unless the teacher has left their laptop and provided a password (rarely the case). We may have access to a document camera/projector, but that is about it. Knowing that all subs aren't tech-savvy, I'd also suggest printing the powerpoint slides you want them to show, just in case technology isn't able to be used. Lastly, again, a thousand likes on the early finisher tip. Not knowing anything about what is or isn't allowed, my default is typically 'read a book'. If you are aware of options, student behavior is better managed. And, if time on the computers is allowed, making sure the sub knows what is, and isn't allowed, is also helpful info to leave, so the kids aren't trying to pull a fast one on you (like, can they really go on youtube?). Just a few extra notes, but overall, great advice for teachers. (I actually took an education course on classroom management, and in it the instructor had us create a 'sub binder', so thank you for your templates, as they made figuring out what details to put in seem not so daunting.)
I'm planning to go into drama or teaching drama in my adulthood, and honestly??? though some of your videos aren't applicable, ones like this totally are!
As a sub, if I had any of this, I’d be willing to sub for that class forever. Nothing is more scary than going into a new class and having no idea how their schedule works. Hardest thing I’ve ever had was not being told I had special ed. child in the class. When a kid starts screaming at you because you’re new you get a little terrified. Lol.
There’s no end parentheses on the introduction page and it’s bothering me lol i love this channel, I’m not a teacher but I’m overly organized like this
As a substitute teacher (or CRT as we are known as in Australia) I can only hope that the teachers leave this kind of information for me! You are amazing!
I love this video. So much good info. Prior to becoming a teacher I was a sub and one tip I always give teachers who have a tight daily schedule is to build in time at the start of class for the sub and the kids to gwt to know each other. Just 5 or 10 minutes to allow the sub to start connecting, which makes the sub's life so much easier and it helps students behavior. As a sub I sometimes skipped the first exercise in the sub plan in order to take time to connect with the students.
I really enjoyed this video and every day I am inspired by you of becoming a future teacher. The question could you show us a video on how we can make some of our own style of documentation for subs.
Could you do a video with tips on student teaching? I start student teaching next year and I’m super nervous! I love you videos, they make me so excited to become an elementary school teacher!!
I just graduated with my teaching license and have been subbing so much the past few months. I wish teachers followed these tips! I have a feeling that if I subbed for you it would be a breeze compared to some teachers 😂 the detailed sub plans are SO helpful; even if it seems overkill, I personally prefer to be given more info than necessary than to be given not enough info. I personally like to bring early finisher activities in my bag in case the teacher doesn’t have anything available. I like to print out word searches, Rebus puzzles, and coloring pages for the various age groups that I teach and it works so well. I’ve subbed from elementary to 8th grade and every grade level has something fun to do when they’re done. I let them have choices as to what kind of activity they want to complete and it has saved my life while subbing!
Y'all as a sub all I ask is that there's a plan (if it's k-5: give me specific schedules), the numbers to call if there's an issue, and the procedures. If there's particular things that you allow in your classroom that others wouldn't think would be allowed, let the sub know that too.
Most schools now use the term Guest Teacher instead of substitute. Studies have found that when the teacher is referred to as a Guest, they are treated better by students, teachers, staff, admin and parents. It is the concept that when a guest is visiting you should treat them well and make sure you inform them of the things that they need to know, and be on your best behavior. These Guest Teachers have university degrees and many are retired teachers. These guests agree to teach a class on what amounts to very short-notice and they need to be treated very respectfully by all.
I really like the donut management! I know I commented about this last week, and I think this is a great, whole class, management, that doesn’t involve competition! And it’s cute!
I have a similar system. I also leave the student work in numbered/ labeled sheet protectors in the same binder... it’s all in one place! And behavior reflection sheets are located in the back.😏😑
As a sub I cannot agree more with leaving more work than just worksheets. I was in a middle school class recently where the teacher left MULTIPLE packets to be completed...most kids didn't get through even the first packet because they were bored and I don't blame them!
I could always tell when a teacher was out-I would get her/his students in my clinic! Love that you have the school nurse contact info. BTW-I also had to create a sub binder.
You are the reason that I want to be a teacher when I am older but the problem with being a teacher is all the years in college and a ha I suck at school
OMG I'm a sub right now and if I worked in a classroom that was this organized and detailed I think that I would cry
I'm a substitute teacher and if teachers gave me HALF of the info you have in that binder I would feel so blessed. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of detail and thoroughness in sub plans. imagine your sub has never even set foot in your building before, and explain things accordingly. because I often have never set foot in the building before, and even individual teachers within a school are so so different. in addition, ~please~ talk to your students about respecting subs. substitute teachers are still teachers. the students and the subs need to be clear about behavior expectations!
Thepiratenerdjen Don’t boss her around
ThePirateNerdJen bruh subs are liek free game t
Jordan Epstein they were just giving some suggestions-not even specifically at her but at other teachers too. These are things most people don’t think about and as a future educator, I certainly wouldn’t have.
You should make a table of contents for your binder!!! It’s super awesome but very complex and a table of contents may help an overwhelmed sub :)
Lauren Gottfried or maybe tabs on the side! ❤️
Me: Subscribed and watches most of your videos
Also me: Is in 7th grade and has no interest in being a teacher in the future
Lol I have problem

I never realized how many young children there are with access to UA-cam until I read the comments on this video!! Seven year olds scrolling through UA-cam videos, oh my! I'm so glad you put out such wonderful, positive content.
I agree.
You'd be surprised.
2 things that are HEAVEN for a sub and I RARELY if ever see them.
1 - a current seating chart
2 - a student roster with photos of each child. (This is exceptionally nice and prevents kids from lying about who they are.)
Can I also say, substituting is a disrespected job.
I’m 10 and I want to be a teacher when I grow up. You really inspire me a lot and I love seeing your videos!! You deserve more subscribers
The AGC Sisters same with me but I am 9
Me too!! But, I’m 12.
Me tooo!!! Im 12 and my grandpa and his brothers were teachers hehe !
Allison Nicole y’all are so cute 😂
Same
Note: if you have a good sub, request her again. Spread the word that she got things done and handled the class well. Help her get work!!
Being a sub having your sub binder in the uk would make life so much easier being a sub.
Being a sub is hard work when you have no real coherent plans
I agree Emily! I have been in a second grade class before, where the teacher left NO plans at all! It was a rough day haha
There is so much good advice in these videos. It feels like I should take notes 😱
Lucia Aleman I do 😅 on many of these videos
I do, too! (And I've been teaching for 14 years!)

What you do, please, at this point when the class teacher doesn't give her plan. How do you manage the class?
I love how i wake up and there is a new video out. Perfect way to start my morning!
I feel like you should market this binder to every school! This makes life much more manageable as a sub! Love this! So organized

I loved this video ms.Ferre
U are very wise & I love your videos 👍💖
As a sub, if I had any of this, I’d be willing to sub for that class forever. Nothing is more scary than going into a new class and having no idea how their schedule works. Hardest thing I’ve ever had was not being told I had special ed. child in the class. When a kid starts screaming at you because you’re new you get a little terrified. Lol.
Absolutely great!!!!! I sent a link to my cousin with 30+ year experience in case she was mentoring a novice teacher.
Great advice! Thank you for everything you do!!
There’s no end parentheses on the introduction page and it’s bothering me lol i love this channel, I’m not a teacher but I’m overly organized like this
I’m not a teacher! I’m just a kid who found you and UA-cam and now I rly want to be like you!❤️💞🤗love you so much!
I personally don’t want to be a teacher but I find these videos sooo interesting and she is super organized omg
Omg you make being a teacher seem so fun!!!♡♡♡
Yes!!!! I totally needed this video! It is overwhelming. Thanks, girl ❤️
I enjoy your channel.
You might want to put the emergency info in at the front of your binder so it’s easier to
Find. 🌞
I wonder how you deal with IEP’s and 504 Plans. Can you do a video on it?
Most schools now use the term Guest Teacher instead of substitute. Studies have found that when the teacher is referred to as a Guest, they are treated better by students, teachers, staff, admin and parents. It is the concept that when a guest is visiting you should treat them well and make sure you inform them of the things that they need to know, and be on your best behavior. These Guest Teachers have university degrees and many are retired teachers. These guests agree to teach a class on what amounts to very short-notice and they need to be treated very respectfully by all.
These are my favourite videos xx
Amazing video so precise!!! Thx u I needed this
As a substitute teacher (just got my degree in December) this binder would be AMAZING to have!
Thank you for making this sub video, Michelle!! It's really good and clearly explained what to expect and anticipated👍👍
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!! ❤️❤️
I really like the donut management! I know I commented about this last week, and I think this is a great, whole class, management, that doesn’t involve competition! And it’s cute!
Being a sub, I would LOVE it if more teachers were on top of it like you are.
Also your such a awesome teacher
I am definitely not this detailed with my plans. lol I have your sub binder product from TPT so I think its time for me to revamp my sub binder.
Who’s in school still and wishing they had her for a teacher
Ohh I like the monthly Reminder to update binder.
I’m 10, have no interest in becoming a teacher or substitute and yet I still watch these.
I absolutely love these videos! And I really want to be a teacher when I grow up!
I love your tips and tricks☺
I have a similar system. I also leave the student work in numbered/ labeled sheet protectors in the same binder... it’s all in one place! And behavior reflection sheets are located in the back.😏😑
As a sub I cannot agree more with leaving more work than just worksheets. I was in a middle school class recently where the teacher left MULTIPLE packets to be completed...most kids didn't get through even the first packet because they were bored and I don't blame them!
Good advice! I should tell my principle
I could always tell when a teacher was out-I would get her/his students in my clinic! Love that you have the school nurse contact info. BTW-I also had to create a sub binder.
As always...Inspirational!
This is helpful for preparing for babysityers
You are the reason that I want to be a teacher when I am older but the problem with being a teacher is all the years in college and a ha I suck at school
You made me want to be a teacher, it seems so awesome your so lucky!
My teacher has a seating chart with our names and pictures so we can't switch places and get away with it
