My third grade teacher gave me advice back in 1992 prior to my first day in my classroom. He said to find something that went well during the day and focus on that and try not to dwell too much on what did not go well during the day. This is year 27 for me, and that is the advice that I give to new teachers. Thank you for your presentation.
So great to hear from a fellow veteran! I am beginning my 24th year of teaching and I am still learning so much! That's one of the best parts about teaching, every year we get new kids, new personalities, new backgrounds, etc. Creates new-ness every year!
I'm starting year 31 (!). Thank you! It's true - experienced teachers (including me) fall into a pattern, tiredness, etc. I had your enthusiasm when I started and want to bring that back. When I started I could tell which teachers should just get it over with and retire. I didn't understand how people could wind up like that. Now I do. I'm not there, but want to regain that spirit again. :) Your videos remind me of the attitude I once had had. Time for me to watch YOUR videos and begin anew.
im 18! this is my first year of teaching and it’s so terrifying specially because im starting in the beginning of semester 2! watching as many videos like this as I can
I really want to be a teacher when I grow up. I really want to start watching videos really early about this stuff. I am only 11. Thank you for these tips I am just getting more excited to start a teaching career when I am older. If I don’t teach when I am older I am going to be sad.
I am beginning my 24th year of teaching and I am still learning so much! That's one of the best parts about teaching, every year we get new kids, new personalities, new backgrounds, etc. Creates new-ness every year!
Thank you for this. I only have three weeks left of my summer. This will be my first year teaching and my anxiety is pumping. Lol it’s always nice to hear encouragement and to be told that it is okay to make mistakes.
27 years into teaching and I am still pursuing pd opportunities, advice, new ideas, and research information. Thank you for mentioning that and the relationship issue. Every year that is also a priority for me.

I currently work as a after school teacher (k-2) and people always look at me as another daycare worker but it's so not true. I definitely do lessons planning monthly and each week we do a new topic. This week is "we can do it week" they can build self esteem, do hw on time, be respectful. A thing I would work on is to stop listening for other teacher's opinions on my class.
Im a 17 year old guy and Teaching high school history has been an interest of mine for a while. Starting to prioritize this interest over my others so I’m looking for info on how to connect with students and what to expect. I didn’t have a good high school experience so I feel like that would push me harder to help to build relationships with students rather than just be an authority figure in the room. I’ve always had a desire to be in the position of helping others and I think teaching is my best option. Thanks for the info 🙏🏼
I am currently a student at college getting my degree in English Teaching, it is reassuring to see that there are videos out here for new teachers. I'll rewatch in a few years when I actually start teaching!
This is so perfect. I love your tips. These tips apply to any profession especially the first tip. Do not be afraid to ask questions, it shows that you care!! I cannot wait to share these with my friends who are teachers!! I’ve got a PD book for you: the book is called Lifeline 65. It is written by a good friend of mine and it focus on relationships.
I’m heading into my 18th year and you really hit the nail on the head! I had to learn to ask questions and figure out balance. What works one year may not work the next. Great video. . .a MUST WATCH for everyone! 🙂
I definitely agree about taking one day a week as a no schoolwork day! Another thing that I find helpful is having a cut off time for working in the evenings. Mine is usually 6pm because that's what time we get kicked out of the building and I try not to take work home with me then (sometimes I leave earlier and do stuff from home instead, in which case my cut off time would be later). I think that's such an important rule to make as a new teacher to help you from burning out, and I only break it if things absolutely have to be done by the following day. I also have a bed time that I try to stick to so I get enough sleep!
I'm a junior in high school with his heart set on teaching. Your channel has given me a confidence boost in what I want to do. Thank you for all the hard work you put into both your channel and your students!
I just applied to a school for being an art teacher for k-4 grade, I hope and pray every night for the school to call me back, but your videos are helping me so much. SUPER EXCITED!! I can't wait to change the education of the kiddos forever!
In my first year right now, teaching ESL and math abroad to 1st-4th grade. Can't thank you enough for this video!!! Seriously lifted a weight off my shoulders to hear someone say exactly the things I needed to hear. :)
A H As luck would have it, thanks to Covid-19 I was let go before the new school year. So sadly, it looks like I have to revert back to truck driving probably this entire school year. 😩
Hi Michelle, I am a rising high school senior and I love all your videos. I just started watching about 2 weeks ago and I have been watching all your videos ever since . Your videos sealed the deal for me because now I know teaching is something I love and want to pursue when I graduate high school. Thank you for all your amazing videos
This is really a big help~ I watched your vids since when I am still in 4th year college. Now I am in my first year of teaching, I still watch your vids.
I'm loving your videos. This will be my first year teaching 1st grade in a public school. I'm trying to see what I'm going to need and try to get a head start before I actually start. Your videos are helping me plan. Thank you so much.
I was just hired for my first teaching position. I actually got the grade level I wanted (1st), the principal is amazing, and I am equally nervous and excited. I am so grateful to see and hear your advice and videos! Thank you :D
Honestly thank God for your videos. I’m going into my junior year of college and you keep me excited about what’s to come for a career in teaching! Thanks for making videos like this, it definitely helps to ease anxiety.
I loved the last tip! "because you are at your breaking point" lol This was all too real in my 1st year teaching 4th grade last year. Now I'm in my 2nd year about to teach 3rd grade! I always keep snacks and treats in my classroom.
Man, I've started a UA-cam channel and even though I've been teaching for so long, I've forgotten some of this stuff. This is awesome! I'll keep watching.
I have binge watched your channel over the last few months now since I got accepted onto my teacher training course for September 2019. I cried when Billy proposed and I have laughed more as you became more confident in yourself. This video was another fab video and it just gets me so excited to start my new career. I am based in the UK and my teaching career is starting late (I'll be 30 in sept) and I simply can't thank you enough for these videos!!! I am sure I will use each and every one of your tips from this video and the many others you have posted too 😊. Thank you Michelle 😍
I needed this video two years ago! I needed this video last year! I am so glad I have this video this year! You’re advice is relevant for any teacher, no matter if they are new or not! It is so helpful to know that each teacher will face these challenges and that it’s NORMAL! Thank you for sharing your advice for those who really want to try their best at being a teacher!
Yes please!! I’d love to see more about different PDs. Thank you so much for making this video Michelle, I find all this advice so helpful as a new teacher! You’re amazing 😀❤️
Awesome tips!!! So true about avoiding the negativity. Personally I have trouble when teachers complain about my past students ... I take it pretty personally. I had to learn that avoidance works best for me.
Hello! Thanks for all the tips for teachers! I am so excited to finally reach 4th grade I have been watching you since I was in 2nd grade because I loved getting a perspective of teachers and having appreciation for them hope you enjoy this year of teaching! -your 2 year fan, Gabriela
I got my dream job last week and start as a teaching assistant in a primary school at the end of August😁 your videos get me so excited to start my new career!
I know this video is old, but it is helpful to me now. Especially your tip of picking one focus area for the school year. I'm feeling like I'm having to improve EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW and it's feeling really overwhelming. I will have to ponder and choose the specific thing...
I loved this! I wish I had seen it last summer before my first year of teaching. I will try to remember all the points as I am teaching in a new grade level-- the first year in 3rd grade moving to pre-k. I will keep watching your vlogs despite the differences in our students' ages! I am addicted!
I’m going to be a 3rd year teacher this year and a second year 2nd grade teacher. Even so, these tips were still very helpful! As a teacher we’re always learning and wanting to improve, so I’d love information on PD opportunities! As always, awesome video! Thank you!!!!
YESSS MICHELLLE!!! This is what I needed! I'll be a first year teacher in like two weeks. I'm teaching fifth self contained!!! I've been following you since the beginning! We're gonna make it!
I’m going into my 3rd year teaching and 1st year in self contained! I would loooove if you did a video about your self contained experiences and any tips you have for a self contained classroom (organization, routines, etc) and teacher! 💕💕
Thank you! This video was helpful to me as someone going into year 2. My first year TERRIBLE and this video would have given me some peace of mind! Remember: Don't do all the things :)
I'm so nervous about being a first year teacher and your first day helped me feel so much better 😆 hopefully mine won't be like that haha. Love all your videos and everything you create. It motivated me through college and I've saved so many things to help me be a great (hopefully) teacher.
im going into my first year of college to study chemistry and education so i can teach!! your videos and general personality make me so much more excited to teach in a few years. thank you for being a great resource for new teachers and im sure experienced teachers as well ❤️
