1995 - 2002 OBS GM Truck Replace Repair Broken Inside Door Handle w/POWER Windows (Chevy & GMC)

  • This video is about the factory dealer repair / replacement approach (with new rivet) to fix the very common broken inside door handle for any old body style (OBS) GM full size trucks. Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC full size models only. Applicable to Suburban, Silverado, Sierra, Yukon, Tahoe, W/T, Escalade, Cheyenne models across Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, and Holden. The rivet I used is aluminum, and ~4.75mm O.D. to fit the pre-drilled hole nicely. Tools required, and GM part numbers are provided. I have TWO versions of this video posted, this one for base models with manual crank windows/locks and then this video is for doors with the power windows/locks option. There is a link inside each video to the other.
    The vehicle shown in the video is a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban K1500, and the front row door is the object of the repair. The part numbers are the same for the rear row doors, while the trim disassembly will vary somewhat for the rear row the procedure is still applicable for the part being replaced here across 1995 96 97 98 99 and some carry over OBS GMT400 models in 2000 2001 and 2002.
    The eBay and Amazon search links below are paid links, for which I may be compensated and earn a commission, if you choose to buy the parts and tools shown in this video thru them:
    Replacement inside door handle by GM part numbers (LH and RH in four different interior colors) NEUTRAL/TAN 15708051 15708052 BLUE 15708045 15708046 RED 15708049 15708050 GRAY 15708043 15708044: ebay.us/W60LpR

    Genuine GM white nylon trim retaining clips shown GM 15960325: ebay.us/R5jWAd or amzn.to/36GVaBr
    Model years 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 mainly, but also some 2000 2001 2002 year carry over trucks that still used the OBS GMT400 design.

    Thank you so much for a great video!,, I was able to change out the door handle with little difficulty & saved myself appx. $90.00!!! The best part is the satisfaction of being able to do this without any other help & do it on my time schedule, before the rain arrived. I used a #12 - 1” sheet metal screw to secure the handle since I didn’t own the tool required to install the rivet. Thanks again!! Todd’s wife>>the new mechanic!

    I just replaced the interior driver side handle on my 95 Silverado, for the second time, but before replacing it this time I roughed up the empty channel of the handle and filled it with J B Weld, because that weak and flimsy looking section of the handle is where the handle broke, on both of the previous failures.
    I've had good luck using J B Weld in the past to increase the integrity of various materials, and hope it will provide enough additional strength to the handle to keep it from breaking again.
    Your video was a good refresher for how to replace the handle, even though I remembered most of the procedures from having done it before, a few years ago.

    I used this video to do mine. Bought the part off Ebay for $6.95. Worked fine until I went to roll the window down and heard the rod spring out of the socket and the handle stopped working which drove me crazy! I thought it was the screw which I thought was too long. Turns out, I only needed to manipulate the rod that opens the door so that it holds itself in place and stays out of the way of the window slide. I also noticed that I could not move the handle even when I was trying it out without the screw while the panel was on the door. Therefore, I got the rod where it needed to be and NEVER USED ANY SCREW, AT ALL, and it's been working perfect, "knock on wood" ever since for about A MONTH and there is no play at all! Also, if you're a country boy like me, you don't need any pry bar. Just grab the panel and give it a strong controlled pull. I hope this helps the next person from all the headaches I got!

BTW, I am confused on Amazon about ACDelco and (apparently) a "regular" grade and a "professional" grade and I think there is even a next up as I found ACDelco disc for my 96 K2500m 8600 GVW, there were/are some grade higher (Law Enforcement, Ambulance, ....). Usually there will be a part number reference that helps you find the GM original equipment version from ACDelco. But sometimes sellers do not list this information. You can cross reference using parts-catalog.acdelco.com/catalog/catalog_search.php and find exactly which one.

    I’m needing some help with this! I just replaced my handle. I closed the door with the interior door panel off just to try it before I put everything back together. It worked just fine and the door opened as it should. Then I put the panel back together and closed the door and now it’s stuck closed. I know for sure I had everything in its proper place. Don’t know what could have gone wrong? I just destroyed the new handle in order to get the door open again but I don’t want to have to go through this again. Any tips?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  2 роки тому

      You certainly did the right thing in testing it before reinstalling the trim panel. What you could also do is use a bolt to retain it, before re-riveting it, and test not just the door latch but also the lock mechanism. The latter can sometimes use some lubrication as well. But usually the only thing that can go _wrong_ on this repair, is the rods are bent and either do not slide smoothly thru the plastic guides correctly, or they interfere with either the lock or handle traveling fully to unlock/open the door. So I'd also double check both rods for that problem.

    My drivers door handle has been broke for a few years... I've been opening it from outside.. Now, something went wrong and the window won't go down enough that I can't reach outside handle.. It is coming against something at the rear of the door... Will a door off of a 1990 fit onto a 1996?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure if a 1990 is exactly the same, 1992 probably though. If I had this particular problem, I'd just cut thru the plastic interior trim panel in order to open the door (by pulling the rod manually) and then perform repairs (this will destroy the interior panel tho). I would then go to my local LKQ self service salvage yard and pull the best replacement interior trim panel I could find. Remove the two phillips screws at the arm rest, remove the trim around the door handle, and then find a suitable tool to cut into the trim panel where you can remove the door handle piece shown in the video. That will allow access to pull the rods manually.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 роки тому

      Yeah I've had a few comments asking to see the manual view and I'll be doing that in a few weeks off a different truck. But the short answer is for the manual it's just the two phillips for the arm rest (same as power), pop the trim piece around the broken door release handle (same as power), and then what's new is you have to pop the metal clip on the window crank and remove the crank (easiest with a special tool) and then you can remove the plastic insulation washer, and then finally the perimeter white nylon clips holding the trim cover to the door (also same as power). Only electrical connection will be the door speaker with manual crank windows.

      You'll have to get the window down, and then actuate the slide rod with a flat metal tool so that you can get the door open to do the repair. In parts of the video, and then if you view my other video on the outside handle, you can see how this rod connects to both and how you might work it manually with such an improvised tool. Odd for both inside and outside handles to go at once though.

    Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove their door panel of a truck door that does not open?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 роки тому +1

      You will have to get it to open, the door trim and the door lock and actuator linkage has to be accessible to do the repair. If I had a locked door where the handle broke off I would cut thru the module plastic that was going to replace anyway right, so that I could get access to get a tool in there to activate the linkage to open the door manually (what the broken handle is no longer able to do). You can unlock the door with the key externally first of course if for some reason the inside door lock is also inoperative.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 роки тому

      @@tiadarby5311 It'll be tough to get the inside door trim off with the door closed. Like I mentioned above to Joe you might just want to cut into the existing door handle module enough so you can pull the rod manually with some long long nose pliers to get the door opened up first. Be safe when you do that to not injure yourself, I'd probably go the route of heating up a cutting tool first so that I'm going thru it like butter rather than using force.
