Just finished replacing the driver side inter door handle just as you show here but I didn't disconnect any of the electrical components, just worked around them. I think I saved some time .
Bought one of these for my 1998 Chevy Z71 on Amazon a couple days ago. It showed up on Saturday and I tore the door panel off and started looking at the bad door handle and it obviously was broken right where the bar is that supposed to open the door. Drilled out the rivet and got the old handle out of the door. Had a little trouble getting plugs out of the electrical switches, but finally got them out. This new metal handle works super great and looks like it should last a long while I hope? I didn’t bother putting a new rivet in nor did I bother putting a nut and bolt in either. It seems plenty strong in the door once you get the top and side locked in place. Bottom really doesn’t move and the door panel going to hold the handle in place anyway. If I’m wrong and the handle somehow moves, then I will put a rivet in then if I need to! Anyway it’s all back together and works perfectly. I have had issues with opening this door from the day I bought the truck from the original owner. Now I know why! 😢 hate those plastic parts, you know it’s only time till it breaks! This metal handle I think going to last longer than the truck itself does! I got to buy another metal handle for the passenger side now! Get them both replaced with this metal handle while I can still get them! Much better than plastic any day!
I've got a 95 Sierra and just now I was getting ready to go to work and my door would not open from the outside or the inside. At least you were able to open your door to get to work on it
Both of my back interior door handles snapped in my 95 4 door tahoe due to frozen doors. I looked to replace them and actually found a set of 4 solid metal door handles. So much better
great video. Worked just as you said. Got the parts, and followed your lead. I will say getting the rods off the old handle assembly was a ______, and used some chain lube to fix the noisy lock switch. Thank you!
Awesome job, Sir. I didnt have a rivet gun, so I just used a screw. Holds it well and havent had any issues. Had to do this on BOTH doors, and I also replaced my outer handles.
The actual issue was the steel they made the connecting rods from were soft, and would stretch over time. I've replaced mine 4 times, and finally realized what was going on. Adjust the bend 1/8 to 3/16 and the handles will stop maxing their throw, and you'll quit pulling harder than needed. At my job we had an early 2000s van with the same handle, only it was original equipment. That made me look in to WHY the mid 90s trucks had to be repaired.
Crazy. My door did the same thing so I bought a new one and after taking the handle off I found the spring for the handle way back towards latch mechanism. It was rusted like crazy so I guess it just snapped off. I had to replace outside door handle at the same time cause the key lock was broken and a pain to get into the truck. That’s how I found the spring!
Haha. See this is funny. The old K2500 I just bought I locked myself in it last nights. Windows wouldn't roll down and neither door would open. I had my cellphone so I had to call my wife to get her to come open the door for me and let me out! Thanks for the video :P
I just did my door speakers in my 97 Sierra. About half the clips broke & i had to order new ones off Ebay bc the chevy dealer wanted $2 a clip. I got 20 clips for $6 shipped.
Great video! I would recommend transferring the vapor barrier from the OEM handle to the aftermarket handle. I recently purchased OEM interior door handles, and they include a vapor barrier.
Very good and detailed procedure. I ran into this with my 99 Tahoe and instead of installing a rivet I used a anchor (similar to hanging up a picture on a wall) and a screw. That way if I run into the issue again in the future its easier to remove. So far its been over 3 years and no issue....knock on wood :-)
I have a 1996 s1500 the passenger door handle doesn’t open the door from the inside it’s a very common problem with these vehicles . Thank you for the tutorial
I've already done this job on both doors of my '97 GMC pickup a few years ago. And also the outside door handles (both of them). Just the other day my inside driver's door handle busted....AGAIN..in the same place. It's a terrible design flaw, and I wish someone could come out with an improved aftermarket version of the door handles that aren't just copies of this junk. I've had to pull my door panels off so many times over the last 16 years with this truck, fixing and re-fixing various things such as power windows, handles, speakers, etc, that there is hardly anything left of the door panels. They pretty much just flop around even with new plastic doohickies to mount them. Still to this day the power windows only work when they feel like it. This on top of all the other electrical and GM plastic related bugs the truck has. I would have long ago gotten rid of it if it weren't for the engine and body/frame which are really good. Everything else about these trucks is GM's junk from the 80s-90s era. Bottom line- if you have to do this door handle job once and keep the truck for a while, get ready because you're going to have to do it again in the future.
I have looked at several videos and this one turn my night mare into hope for tomorrow. I just made a whopper mistake and tore out my door panel to the window. Something went horribly wrong and l can't open or close my door. So, l after watching this l can see the rode on the bottom and top that is supposed to hook into the handle part. So, tomorrow l'm going to try it. Thank you for this video. I'll get back with you, when l fix it. It got dark and my interior light won't go off. ?
My 97 Suburban interior door lever and lock do not seem broken, but just like you I can not open the door from the inside or lock and unlock it manually from the inside. Over the past year I have had the vehicle, I discovered that the previous owner left a lot of repairs half finished. I am hoping that they just forgot to snap the latch and lock rods in when they had it apart. From looking at similar videos as yours I also see that the "ends" of the rods not only snap into the latch and lock, but the length of the rods also snap into guides on the interior metal panel of the door. Can these guides be reached and the rods snapped into them without taking off the interior metal door panel which has all the window linkage on it? If the rods ends just need to be snapped in, can it be done without drilling out the rivet on the handle and removing it?
Thank you for this video now I know how to fix my door and it’s much needed due to the cold weather here sometimes my window doesn’t row down because it’s frozen
Don't remove the plugs from the window switch box, remove the box from the trim panel instead. It's much easier and it will allow you to raise and lower the window as necessary while you're working inside the door.
Just put new door handles on my 97 chevy 1500 handle is working but I can’t get the passenger door to lock now would you happen to know what I did wrong ?
mine was not "broken" but the bushings had worn enough to allow the rod to fall out. I changed the handle anyway rather than 10 mile round trip to return and buy bushings
It took me four orders to get the drivers side unit. They are marked L or R. Kept sending me the right side even though Amazon had it listed as Left side. Grrr!
I know this is an old video but I have a question. Do your front doors unlock when you open them? I just bought a 1995 Chevy Suburban 1500 and it's the only vehicle I have ever been in where the front doors don't unlock when you open them.
Thomas Cunniff no, the doors only open after they’ve been unlocked. In other words, pulling the interior door handle with a locked door does not open the door.
@@1RoadGarage Thanks for getting back so quick on such an old video. Just bought my burb a few weeks ago and I am loving it. 164000 miles and runs and drives perfect. Your videos help out a lot. I have ended up needing to do a lot of the same things you cover in your video. Keep em coming.
88-94 GM trucks don't seem to have this problem. It looks like only the 95-00 GM trucks have this issue of handles breaking. Not talking about the lock washers/rod clips, seen both styles broken due to abuse.
GM trucks have sure went down the toilet putting these kind of door handles on them. And if your door hinge bushing are wore out you better replace them too. Or more handles will keep breaking. These pickups are a true money pit. I have one truck that needed them on both sides and you can tell they have already replaced the drivers side. So it is on it's third inside door handle on the drivers side,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
These things are pure crap! I replaced my driver side door handle on my 97 Sierra K 1500, and it broke on the first pull 🤬🤬🤬🤬!!! $20 & broke on the first use. WTF!! 🤬🤬 absolute junk plastic made by GM.
If you need one of these handles, they're literally $5 +s/h on Rock Auto. I just bought one and installed it in my 97 K1500. Works great.
Every time I have an issue on my gmt400, you have a video already!
Just finished replacing the driver side inter door handle just as you show here but I didn't disconnect any of the electrical components, just worked around them. I think I saved some time .

Fantastic!! Best repair video I have used in all my DIY. Your explanations are the TOP bar EVERY repair video should try to achieve. Thanks!!
Thank you!
Thank you. Other videos either over complicated the fix or had poor camera work. Much appreciated.
Awesome job, Sir. I didnt have a rivet gun, so I just used a screw. Holds it well and havent had any issues. Had to do this on BOTH doors, and I also replaced my outer handles.
What size screw?
Thanks for the video Jimmy, this tutorial helped me fix the door handle on my aunt's 99 GMC Yukon.

Great video. Thanks for showing the test fit. If it doesn’t pass the test fit, they sent the wrong part. Thanks again for the video.
Thanks for sharing man i was feeling lazy to fix my door handle but today after seenig your video i thunk i will fix it .thanks a lot

Glad to see you had better luck with the rod retainers than I did.
Yeah, they seemed to work perfectly. Time will tell.
Awesome video. Going to do my 95 suburban Chevy. Thanks Bro

That Sierra is bad ass 😍
Great tutorial. I just did this on my 1995 K2500 and this was by far the easiest removal and reinstallation of a door card I've done thanks to you.
I just did my door speakers in my 97 Sierra. About half the clips broke & i had to order new ones off Ebay bc the chevy dealer wanted $2 a clip. I got 20 clips for $6 shipped.
THANKS FOR THE GREAT INFORMATION ..........NOW I CAN FIX MY 99 TAHOE INSIDE DOOR HANDLE..........
Thanks for the video! I’ve watched it before but I finally decide to get the handle and actually do the job!
Ya buddy!!
Replacing all the worn parts on my 98 k1500 SLT Suburban.
Making it look easy.
First 15 seconds were me today. Hilarious!
I love that blue interior.
Thank you Jim I just installed my new handle
Great video! I would recommend transferring the vapor barrier from the OEM handle to the aftermarket handle. I recently purchased OEM interior door handles, and they include a vapor barrier.
Love the look of that Sierra. What were the wheel/tire sizes on it if you remember?
Very good and detailed procedure. I ran into this with my 99 Tahoe and instead of installing a rivet I used a anchor (similar to hanging up a picture on a wall) and a screw. That way if I run into the issue again in the future its easier to remove. So far its been over 3 years and no issue....knock on wood :-)
License plate phillips screws works as well if you do not have a rivet or gun.
Genius
Hey man! Love your videos! I just bought a 95 Tahoe n you’re helping me out quite a bit! Thank you
Love it
I have a 1996 s1500 the passenger door handle doesn’t open the door from the inside it’s a very common problem with these vehicles .
Thank you for the tutorial
Take an extra minute and lube up any and all interior linkages, gears, and pivot points.

Man love the suburban! Still want a decal!
Very clear instructions many thanks 👌👍
Hey Jim. Thanks for the video. What size rivet did you use to secure the new handle?
I have looked at several videos and this one turn my night mare into hope for tomorrow. I just made a whopper mistake and tore out my door panel to the window.

Great video. Very instructive.
Bravo... Chris Fix vibes!
Thanks my friend for this videos You are a great man and this problem is widespread👍🏻🌹

How do u remove box
Just put new door handles on my 97 chevy 1500 handle is working but I can’t get the passenger door to lock now would you happen to know what I did wrong ?
What rims are those on the white Chevy you cut to when you said GMC Sierra in the beginning
This was a great video. Thank you
mine was not "broken" but the bushings had worn enough to allow the rod to fall out.
I changed the handle anyway rather than 10 mile round trip to return and buy bushings
Really awesome video. Thank you!
It took me four orders to get the drivers side unit. They are marked L or R. Kept sending me the right side even though Amazon had it listed as Left side. Grrr!
Is their a solution to open the rear passenger doors that's won't open because of the safety lock
I got that problem with both doors in a 95 2 door Tahoe ,, I tried to fix it but I finished with no usable clips😂😂
Like...i would like to know more. What about the speakers
I have a 1999 Chevy Suburban the code p0410 keeps coming up even though I replaced the secondary air pump. What advice can you give me?
It's happening exactly on my 95 suburban 6.5TD 🤣🤣
Great job. Thanks for sharing
how do you get a door opened ( front and back ) if stuck, closed both handles broken ? 99 Tahoe 4 door
Awesome Vid Brother Jim 🤙🏽
Great video lots of help
Nice video, well explained!
Dorman part is hit or miss, if new 1 doesn't work, take latch handle off replacement part and install on original bezel, works everytime. 🤔🙃
why does every tutorial only do power windows?! my truck only has crank windows, so if your sierra has crank windows please make a tutorial on that
Luv to see you replace driver seat motor o6 or newer and iam having a tough time finding one for avalanche.
Good stuff! Thank you!
Nice job! Your videos are really good! This channel is going to grow!
Great video bro!
Great video very informative thank you
Great Job thank you
I know this is an old video but I have a question.
Weird question but what kind of metal is the door handle made out of
What if the door doesn’t open from the inside either?
I like it and I hope I can do this
I put the new door handle on . But for some reason the buzzer in the truck won’t shut off. What do I do?
Jus had this i put sumthing between the bottom an door got out other side
Thanks just got one today lol i have that problem and window motor went out....loven the vids thank you and my 99 thanks you to im sure lol
What wheels are those on that Sierra???
Great video
What about the passenger right inside back door handle
Did the same job recently ...
Nice job
Do you have to have a Rivet gun?
the first 10 seconds that is exactly what i was doing hahah
(Passenger side control panel replacement video) because I can clearly do what you did after I saw you do it 🤣
My advice is too buy the original part, it will last longer, but it's is pricey.
I’ve done that plenty of times. It sucks.
U forgot to put the plastic film on the back of the door handle u suppose to take it from the om one and put on new one just did both side on mine
3/16" Rivet
Yep! Thats me
The 88-94 door handles where way better. They still could brake but not as offten. My 94 still had the original handles.
Crutchfield? Uh oh! Does Amazon know?
That GMC Sierra looks amazing. What did you do with that truck?
4" Rough Country lift, 33" tall tires, leveled.
88-94 GM trucks don't seem to have this problem. It looks like only the 95-00 GM trucks have this issue of handles breaking. Not talking about the lock washers/rod clips, seen both styles broken due to abuse.
Iys locked blyaaaaa!!!!
4:16 thats what she said .

put a screw insteed of a rivet, that handle gonna crack again... and again... and again...
Shows nothing of the handle spring but talks about the color matching forever
These things are pure crap! I replaced my driver side door handle on my 97 Sierra K 1500, and it broke on the first pull 🤬🤬🤬🤬!!! $20 & broke on the first use. WTF!! 🤬🤬 absolute junk plastic made by GM.
He did that on purpose to make an video
