- This video is about the factory dealer repair / replacement approach (with new rivet) to fix the very common broken inside door handle for any old body style (OBS) GM full size trucks with MANUAL crank windows and locks. Chevrolet, and GMC full size models only. Applicable to Suburban, Silverado, Sierra, Yukon, Tahoe, W/T, Cheyenne models across Chevrolet, GMC, and Holden. The rivet I used is aluminum, and ~4.75mm O.D. to fit the pre-drilled hole nicely. Tools required, and GM part numbers are provided. I have TWO versions of this video posted, this one for base models with manual crank windows/locks and the other video is for doors with the power windows/locks option. There is a link inside each video to the other.
The vehicle shown in the video is a 1998 Chevrolet Cheyenne K2500, and the front row door is the object of the repair. The part numbers are the same for the rear row doors, while the trim disassembly will vary somewhat for the rear row the procedure is still applicable for the part being replaced here across all GMT400 OBS models for 1995 1996 1997 1999 2000 2001 and 2002 as well.

So funny you posted this. Literally just used your old video to replace my 96 gmc suburban drivers door handle. 👍
sir you are now my new father thank you for your service
Thank you for posting this!!! I’m not a car guy at all and the only thing I’ve ever replaced are the brake light bulbs. Thank you for putting the part numbers in as well. Very helpful because I had like 3-4 of those clips snap right off. Got it done in an hour or so and only cursed once.
Thanks for the video, just broke my door handle in my 97 GMC 3500 HD. Wasn't sure how to get to crank off for the window. Very helpful.
Thank you so much this was very helpful I just used this is 2021 to replace my 1996 completely broken door handle before winter so no more rolling down the window to get out!
Super helpful! Personally, I cut the rivet with a pair of pliers, and didn't bother replacing it, other than that, it went pretty smoothly.
Thank you for this! Now I have a project for next weekend.
Thank you for posting this viedo. It was very helpful.
This one works, good video.
Thanks that help me out a lot
Very helpful thanks
Thank You So Helpful
How do I replace a whole door to a Chevy 150 pickup 1995 how do you take off the hinges
how about greasing the window gear? my window is hard to roll up and greasing any other moving parts
Sure, if needed while it's accessible.
The 2 Phillips head screws in the handle how long are they? The truck I have don’t have the originals and the handle won’t stay snug
They would be the same on both sides, if you have one side still. I don't recall their length exactly, but they are a bit longer than an inch or so.
I was thinking rods already bent back doors won,t open outside handles appearto be forced / Not sure how to fix this ?
Not quite understanding your question, but the rods are a softer type metal as they are intended to be adjustable, slightly, as needed. So you should be able to straighten any bends out and retain the existing rods. if not, I'd suggest salvaging a new set from your local LKQ yard, they would be common across all years going back prior to 95 as well.
@@DrShock Yes perhaps 2 replacement doors , Going to dealer today maybe they have a clue ?
GM dealer service will be exceedingly expensive if they perform the work tho. Also several of the parts you may need here are discontinued by GM. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, I'd suggest a small local shop instead of the dealership.
@@DrShock Thanks i worked at a dealer in the 80,s so i understand it not always easy to get info or parts for older cars , Still salvage yards & internet are a big help , also being creative & glasses R useful . lol
Is the part the same for manual or electric lock?
The interior handle assembly is the same yeah, just varies by trim color which are in the description text. The procedure to disassemble is the difference and why I have both flavors of it in two separate videos.
@@DrShock thanks, do you know if the brand Dorman any good?
tbh it depends. I wouldn't buy anything electrical from them, but metal and plastic mechanical parts it's less of a concern.
@@DrShock thanks for the info
I used a screw instead of a rivet
What size rivet did you use?
I don't recall the specific size off hand. But I found a matching size to the original factory hole as part of the aluminum rivet kit that came with the Harbor Freight gun I bought many years ago. I would not presume it's anything unusual in size. The answer to this question would simply be the size that fits _snugly_
@@DrShock thanks your video really helped 👍
Hi my name is Joe from S.C
its not that easy
