    You should definitely go through all your "Do I Want It?" videos and write down all the items you said you wanted. Then at the end of the year, make a video about which items you actually are planning to purchase!

    I had to pause it a few min in... I think it would be great to do these videos more often because most of us are on a no buy as well. And if you share your thoughts as to why you do or don't want it and even if we DO want it... to show it is still okay not to buy it. When Samantha March does her will I buy it videos, sometimes she wants or isn't going to buy anything but she still does the video. I think you should as well! Plus, I LOVE seeing into how your thinking has changed and this type of video shows that!

    You are strong! I was super close to going to Ulta and picking up Soft Glam. Then I started thinking about the bathroom remodel I want to do and how that money could be used for a can of primer to paint the walls. I want the bathroom remodel more than eyeshadows I don’t need. You’re totally right with the analogy to the play -addiction is addiction and we have to learn to replace the negative, self-destructive habits with more positive habits. So hard, but seeing you do this successfully is such an inspiration, Hannah.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому +2

      also, Soft Glam will be there forever! Maybe someday when your collection is smaller and your bathroom is totally done and you have a windfall and a special occasion...but for now, it's so good to be able to recognize how much healthier it is to do without.

      Hannah, very true. If I still want it in a year or so, I’ll know it’s real and not an impulse. I don’t need it, that’s for sure!

    What you should do is get samples of stuff that you're thinking of getting, often times for me that's enough to get over my lemming since I use so little of stuff. Just keep going back and getting samples. They can give you a sample of those hourglass shadows for sure.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому +1

      omg, amazing idea. I always think eyeshadows can't be sampled but those ones in a pot certainly can.

    I enjoy your explanations about why you do/don't want a product, especially the reminder that even one reason to not buy it is enough to just not buy it. I resonated with your explanation about highlighters (more singles not palettes!) and how even if you can't exactly dupe a product, the occasion that it would be used overlaps with makeup you already own. Breaking down how a new release would be used really helps me realize that I don't need it.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому +1

      yes, there's something about imagining it in my drawer 6 months from now when it's newness has worn off and it's competing with ALL of my other highlighters for attention...it makes it seem much less exciting :)

    You have such intelligent and thoughtful commentary on this make-up topic. I have not heard this issue talked about in such a way and it is really thought provoking for me. I don't have a ton of make-up but I still feel there is real value in your approach for any purchase- clothes, household items etc... sitting with the feeling of desire and flushing out the mental processes behind that want. Look forward to your content...Thank you!

    Another great video. I listened while getting ready this morning. I’m wistful we didn’t get to see your entire stash at the beginning of the year and then each month. I think it would have been super satisfying to see the pile dwindle. That way I could live vicariously through you!

    I’ve had to examine my feelings this weekend, due to hearing Sephora is issuing a coupon shortly. I was mad because it will come out during my no buy August which because I started it late will run until the coupon ended. I was actually a bit upset so I examined that, and took a look at my Sephora loves list which is where I park anything I want for later. Do you know what I found? I don’t want one thing on that list. I want to buy something, get the buzz of shopping, the buzz of waiting for a package to arrive and be ripped open. That coupon will see no action for me, it will languish and expire, and I will finish my no buy unswayed by Sephora.

      I love this story! yes! I'm so happy that you are starting to truly feel the difference between wanting things and just wanting to buy things. That kind of revelation is what a no-buy is ALL about! Also, I got you with an upcoming video about resisting the VIB sale (and I have a video called "VIB sale recommendations" about resisting the VIB sale that went up during the April sale, in case you haven't seen that, it's a fun one!).

    Would love to see an update on some of these wants. I find myself wanting and then Unwanting so quickly these days.
    I absolutely believe in your point about wanting and not buying. I remember in like 2010 really, really wanting a Cambridge Satchel Company satchel. It was all I ever wanted in a bag, but I couldn't afford it. Last year I ripped the strap on my only purse, and I couldn't find anything I liked to replace it. Then I remembered the satchel. I had the money so I bought one in the perfect color, the perfect size, and I even got the magnetic closure. I'd wanted that specific bag for literally 8 years and now I have it and everyday I still get excited about it like it's new.

    Hi Hannah, glad to hear that you are feeling better and wanting less products. I get the fear and search to replace a limited edition favorite. I wanted the Stila shadows to replace a favorite from Too Faced, but had the 'one reason' of phthalates to discourage it. I'm looking forward to your sunscreen review. Have a good week!

      Hi Megan! Yes, I've thought about trying to find someone re-selling this palette, but I don't want to re-purchase the other five products just to have Rivage and pan it again. I think when it's gone it will be gone for good. I probably have several months to make peace with it, at the rate I'm going with panning :)

    • @MeridaEllaSDB
      @MeridaEllaSDB 6 років тому

      Yeah, I'm over the used make up thing. I work on swatch matching before the product runs out and find a very similar dupe in another line. I've replaced several that way. But I get it if you just want to move on too.

    I have the hourglass scattered light shadow in smoke, when you swatch it they don’t seem to have big chunks of glitter but once you actually put it on your eyes it does look very glittery and slightly chunky. Honestly the L’Oréal infallible shadow in bronzed taupe is more what I like, and I think that’s what you might be looking for too.

    I am still holding strong on my August No-buy. There is no make-up or skincare that I need right now, and nothing that is really enticing me at the moment. The only thing I am wanting (but truly don't need, since I have others) is a lip balm (Blistex, $2.49) that I bought the last week of July and was enjoying until I lost it. I can't find it anywhere. I might give in to picking one up after the month is over. When I am in the stores, I do enjoy touching and swatching in person just to experience the products without feeling like I have to buy them. ..of course, with my teenage daughter that's still a work in progress. Hope you have a great week.

    Eyeshadows are my downfall too! STILL talking myself out of Norvina!
    I rearranged my makeup setup in the move though and made everything easier to reach and see, and my hoard does feel newer to me! It's really settled my need for blush/highlight/everything else, but the eyeshadow palette wants are still kickin'... trying really hard to change my mindset re: eyeshadow.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому +1

      the thing I always think about is: how often do I really do elaborate looks? Maybe you could challenge yourself to do a full purple or pink eye look (a norvina vibe dupe look) every day for the next two weeks. Personally, by the end of that I would not want it nor would I want to reach for any more purple or pink eyeshadow for months, LOL!

    I know exactly the feelings you described going to Sephora. Every time I go to the US I visit Sephora (or occasionally Ulta) and do the same tour of all the things I know from the internet. And for most of those things, the desire evaporates immediately. As you said, it turns out it’s just makeup.
    (In answer to your question, I have been wanting, but am not currently going to buy, a satin medium taupe eyeshadow. Sitting with the desire for a while is a good exercise for me.)

  • @alltheketoladies209

    I was interested in Norvina palette until I saw it in person and knew I wouldn't really rock it at all, too glittery, colors weren't my jam. It looked much more beautiful online. It was more FOMO than anything else. Your channel has deeply inspired me. I begin my no-buy in Sept!

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому +1

      I had already decided I didn't want Norvina, but it's another one that I swatched in store. It's pretty but so much less extraordinary-seeming than the internet made it out to be. Congrats on your upcoming no-buy!!!

    Goodness this was perfect timing for me - a couple of things have caught my eye and I'm trying to be more comfortable with the desire to want things, but not want to buy them.
    Personally, I don't think you should necessarily push yourself to do more of these videos if there isn't anything that you want in makeup land. To me that's a natural evolution of your no-buy year and interests, I would be interested in hearing some of the other non-makeup items that you've been wanting, or even 'concepts' you want more than new releases now (along the lines of what you mentioned about wanting a smaller collection more than adding things needlessly to your existing product collection).

    I really related to your “flexing the muscle” comment. I was raised below the poverty line and that “wanting but not getting” muscle was really really strong on me. Now that I’ve grown up and I have some disposable income, my muscle has atrophied. I started a Pinterest wishlist and I’m trying to flex that muscle. I’ve already added and deleted things from it.
    A few of the things that I really want, but will not buy until I use EVERYTHING in that category are: TaTa Harper Resurfacing Mask, Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder, 1995 shampoo, and the Brazilian Bum Bum Cream. Some non personal care type things are Zebra Midliners, and a Nathan Hydration vest. ( I do have a health and safety clause and am a runner. So if I decide -and train- to do an unassisted trail run I will buy the vest, but otherwise my handheld hydration systems will work for now)

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому

      I have a similar story, I was raised by very thrifty parents, everything was secondhand and there was no beauty budget to speak of! That muscle was SO strong until after college, when I started figuring out that I actually could buy a high-end lipstick and the world wouldn't end :) I think the novelty is part of what made it so exciting and led to an over-spending lifestyle.

    • @cecileganel
      @cecileganel 6 років тому

      Hannah Louise Poston Well I guess the good news is that it’s easier to rebuild a muscle you’ve already had, than to try to build a new muscle.
      The RONB is already making me mindful of consumerism and environmentalism. So that’s another good workout for the muscle.
      I also don’t want to go to far to the other extreme and deprive myself because you can’t take it with you when you go and enjoyment is important. So this will be a good year for reflection and mindfulness. Thanks for being an inspiration girl! You rock.

    I really like these videos and I love the comment mentioned about a yearly total of wants vs what you'll actually buy. I really made a firm "list" for Sephora and Ulta, and stuck well to them--actually removing items after seeing them in person. Now that I've used the two powders I bought, I am pretty sure I will return them, since they don't perform any better than what I already use/have.
    Usually for me, if there is glitter in it, it is immediately a no. I had a massive eye cut from a glittery MUFE shadow that Glitter Glue didn't hold on my eye very well. That was a few years ago and required me to get surgery to repair it. I want no part of glitter as a result (not that it's really my look anyway), and I am wary of foils as well.
    I have kind of a list of "hard no" for myself:
    --glitter
    --duochrome
    --holographic/iridescent
    --lip product (allergy)
    --liquid or jelly products. I just don't want the mess of applying.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому +1

      haha, your "no" list is basically my "yes" list! Except for jelly products, I hate those. That's terrifying about the glitter in your eye, though! A cautionary tale!

    I remember in the early days of UA-cam, we had fewer brands here in the Netherlands. And there was a holiday Bobbi Brown palette that looked so beautiful. Then Bobbi brown opened store here (ca. 2009) and I went to have a look. I remember being so disappointed. It was such a tiny plastic-y box, nothing special. I learnt my lesson early on. Although makeup is not my problem area. I don’t care for perfume either, but I love skincare and body products. I have shelves full of unopened body creams, scrubs and butters that I’m gonna go through this year. But clothing (especially nice coats and lots of shoes), are my vice. At least with makeup, you spend a relatively small amount to buy a super expensive lipstick. But when you buy a nice pair of boots, you can easily spend hundreds of euros. I’m slowly formulating my lo-buy rules for 2019 as I’m watching your videos. Hoping to start February 1st! Keep them coming! Btw, I’ve grown past Bobbi Brown a long time ago ;)

    Completely offtop, but I wanted to share some method you could be interested in 😃 I remember your broken highlighter and that you didn't want to do this whole repressing process. Some time ago I repaired my slightly broken eyeshadows like this: a few drops of isopropyl alcohol on that broken part (until the powder is quite well moist), and then pressed through a paper towel just like in the full method. I repaired my first shadow more than a month ago, it's been used and still is in one piece 👍

    I want the Natasha Denona Tropic palette. I love the colors in it and I have 2 of her larger palettes. (Not at all trying to talk you into spending money, but they are genuinely my favorite formula.) But I heard she changed the formula in the tropic, and she changed the packaging. I know packaging is a silly thing to make or break a purchase, but I'm happy this time it was the latter for me. I love how soft and yet sturdy the original large palettes are. When she switched to the plastic in those large palettes, I felt like she was cutting cost for herself but still making the price the same. I feel betrayed lol. I can't knock that hustle, but I won't buy it purely for those reasons.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому

      Packing is OFTEN what makes or breaks a purchase for me. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted the makeup but not wanted the packaging, so I don't buy it. Whole brands are excluded from my collection because of packaging (too faced, for example). I don't think it's silly at all!

    I previously got the eyes to mesmerize from charlotte tilbury and thought it was too expensive for what it was. I also looked into the other high end cream shadows and found that they were too expensive. As for colourpop i got a few colors and they are not really jelly as they are mostly a soft creamy. And they dont crease or bunch up so they might be a good dupe for the high end

    My Green Closet is a UA-camr who focuses on ethical shopping from all angles; environmental, workers rights, and more. If you watch back through her content you will get a lot of great recommendations for books, podcasts, documentaries, as well as products to try.
    I worked for a fair trade company for years and have also blogger about ethical shopping so I am so excited to hear that you will be addressing this!!

    Check temptailia for dupes for your highlighter. You might find something more affordable or in a single. That sight has saved me from unnecessary purchases.

      I love temptalia :) but there aren't any good dupes for that particular one. It's ok, though, I'm pretty much over it at this point! Time changes everything.

    I'm surprised the Camel palette is one of the few things you want. I find that since brown shadows are easy to formulate, that I don't notice much of a difference between brands like colourpop, makeup geek, anastasia, viseart, or natasha denona. Colors that are difficult to formulate, like purple, I notice a huge difference. So of all the high end palettes to splurge on, for me it wouldn't be a brown one. I do find her metallics pack more of a punch as well. You could dupe that with what you have, though. But we all have different wants and desires, and they aren't always rational!

      that's such an interesting point about different shadows being more worth it in high end formulas! There's something about the idea of "luxury basics" that's always compelled me (especially since I use these tones 80% of the time, so I'd rather have my most-used shadows be luxury, if that makes sense).

    I can’t believe you’re on a no buy year! That’s amazing… I could never do it though 😂

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому +1

      If you're in a super healthy place with shopping, then you don't need to! But if you feel like you "could never" but it might be a good experiment...maybe consider joining no-buy September? A year is a long one but a month might be enough to start seeing things in a new way.

    I got the ND camel palette, the cool toned pictures are not right. This is neither cool or warm, like you said it's very neutral toned. I wouldn't call any of them taupe though

    And I'm over here trying not to buy the $27 Naked palette... which I originally bought 7-8 years ago when it was first released. Still have it sitting in a drawer. I haven't been able to throw it away since it was my first high end palette. 😂

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому

      definitely don't need it, especially if you already had it! I'd rather buy singles of the shadows I like than buy the palette, even if the singles add up to more than $27. I'd rather have the space!

    I actually want the Ofra x Nicki highlighter (the blue shifting one) because I’ve held out on buying one before but it’s been so long and the want is still there. Honestly I can’t think of a reason not to buy it considering I have nothing like it. 😂 I really need help.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому +1

      If you aren't on a no-buy and you don't have anything like it, you think you would wear it all the time AND you can afford it, it might be a good investment? It can be so hard to tell, though, when our brains are in the habit of wanting just for the sake of wanting! You could post a TMO in r/makeuprehab, those are always so helpful.

    I get the impression that the new Dior Collection is their foray into products geared toward makeup artists. I’ve seen nothing that indicates it as a limited edition release.

      I hope it's not! Right now I feel like I'll buy that palette on Jan 1 2019 :) But as I said...I probably won't want it anymore by then. We'll see!

    You missed nothing with the jelly much shadows, i got 2 at a go and seriously regret them. I pick up a lot with a brush or finger no matter how much i try because of how thick the formulation is. The beautiful part is the sheer glitter once its spread out. But its so freaking annoying. The cap annoys me so much!! Going to declutter them, they dont hold a candle to how easy the stila shimmer and glow works

    All these youtube collabs are garbage, I can't remember the last collab that I enjoyed. All their serve is something for their fans to buy, they will only buy it because it has their name on it
    As for Jaclyn hill, I would never buy anything that she shills just for personal reasons, nothing since champagne pop when she went nuts.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  6 років тому

      I'll never understand people buying a collab "just to support" a big UA-camr. If you like the product, fine. But they don't need your $15!
