Something I really liked that my instructor taught me at an Audi High Performance Driving course was also to pretend you have a right string attached from your right foot to the wheel. The more your foot presses down, the more your wheel needs to be pointing straight. So you feed the throttle in as you’re unwinding the wheel, really helpful!
Nick de Bruyne that’s a good one. And another is ‘squeeze the orange under your foot🍊’ when it comes to accelerator application (generally speaking): smash your foot down and it will burst; squeeze it slowly and you’re ok.
Yep, I've reached the point of diminishing returns.... I'm between .9 and 1.3 sec's behind the top guys, and only because it's ridiculously hard to get the buttons to not go full on or off.
It helps, however racing on ACC with a controller isn’t all that bad. I found settings which work for me and find that in most cases I can keep up with the top half of the field. It’s fairly difficult to be consistent as small inputs have a big impact on the joystick. It’s definitely harder but not impossible
slight addendum to Tip #2 (reference points) try and pick something that will not move and if possible can be seen in rough weather or in the headlights if dark.
Just an addition for tip 3, I always think for a new track if you can get on the throttle before the apex and still make the corner you braking too early. Sounds simple and common knowledge but sometimes you don't realise it
All great advice. I would add this. Don't look at where you don't want to go. "Target fixation". Huge problem with new drivers. It's more of and add to the "look as far ahead as possible " mantra. Good stuff Coach Dave.
I think another fundamental must be kept in mind. Always manage the weight of the car smoothly and use the as much of the track as possible while turning. Ease into braking accelerating, and steering progressively, if you do it too quick or suddenly then you break traction.
I'd say start accelerating when you remove steering lock. In some case you may remove steering lock slightly before the apex because you entered very late
My #1 tip for learning tracks is to firstly focus on the braking points. When you have a solid and consistent reference for braking it makes the following corners easier to learn because you start from a fixed point, instead of entering at a completely different speed every time.
These are great tips! The first one is so so true for me too. I've struggled quite a bit with faster cars because I wasn't really looking far ahead enough. It caused me to be very reactionary which would make me miss my braking and turn in points. I've since decided to slow down and pretty much hit the reset a bit. Instead of racing GT3 cars and faster I've dropped way down to performance street cars like 370Z, BMW's, etc in AC to just force myself to learn to focus ahead more. Having a slower car means I have more time to look ahead so I can nail those braking and turn in points and remember all the reference points along the tracks. I've become so much more consistent since then. Slowly moving up to faster cars and progressing. Hopefully I'll gain that experience soon to jump back into the really faster cars and maintain that newfound ability to look ahead and predict instead of react!
It's always a great idea to move down to a slower car for a while. I do this when I'm away from driving for a long period, I basically build myself up again from zero. Great tip mate.
Though once your ass starts lifting off the seat, that's an indication that you've pressed all there is to press :) (I've have friends have a go in my rig and it's disturbing how often I have to state that)
You deserve way more subs, coach. I club race motorcycles and you help me keep my focus sharp in the off season. I do not have the opportunity to be on the bike in the off season, so I play GTS. I think a lot of racing fundamentals that you mention carry over quite well. Thanks you for helping all of us that tune in 🙏🏼
Trying to beat Lewis Hamilton time trials is so frustrating. I had to remind myself as I restarted for the Billionth time to look ahead and drive as smooth as possible and when I did that I have been able to get gold on some of the tracks. This video helps ALOT, thanks Dave and best of luck at the Gulf 12 hr.
Good advice, breaking points are important, but it is easy to forget looking at the rest of the track while you approach them. Also they may not be visible during a race due to other cars. Practice helps, as does finding less than optimal breaking points when you are following a car.
You need more than one reference point per corner Incase they’re blocked by other cars. Also important to spot your reference point but don’t become fixated on it.
@@DavidPerel Yes, what I was trying to say, you said it better. When racing you need to be 100% aware of the cars around you . Breaking points become fluid you might have to break a lot sooner to avoid rear-ending the car in front. I've been on iRacing for just over a week, I enjoyed the Ferrari challenge got a 4th place, but the Porsche wants you dead.
You have mentioned these tips before I'm pretty sure and ever since I started watching your videos I've been getting much better. Hotlaping became easier and faster but I've got a problem and I have no idea how to work on it. Before the actual race my laps are very fast and I usually qualify between 2nd and 7th place but... during the race I suck. I just miss my reference points even tho I am looking for them, I tend to get on power earlier than I am supposed to and I just simply make small but stupid mistakes that cost me seconds and places. I don't know why I am much better when I am hotlaping than when I'm racing.. It's frustrating xD
Pressure of the race affects all of us. You have to get used to manage those pressures and the mistakes will stop. When you race you must not over think your driving. I’m guilty of this too.
It might also be that you have to adapt a bit more of driving in dirty air/slipstream. Maybe practice with a friend who is just slightly quicker drive behind him on the same tracks for a few times and then switch the positions. As a fellow simracer i got the other way round..(weirdly i think). I usually a few tenths quicker in races than my actual hotlap🤣🤣
at the start of the race your tires and brakes are still cold. keep that in mind and go easy on the first lap(s). that was one of my biggest problems going into a race instantly after hotlaping
The only times its permissible 2 take ur eyes away from an apex is when uve gone in 2 hot into a low speed turn n uve felt something amiss in the chassis...at that point u can search anywhere u want as a reference 2 keep urself on the road
It's weird, I've known the general stuff about trail braking and accelerating through corners and can keep it somewhat consistent around sims, but I've found myself woefully inadequate at it on karting tracks. I actually caught myself mid race accelerating well after apexes and just totally screwing up every corner by trying to outdrive myself. Calmed down, went back to basics, got a bit more smooth, and picked up about a second on my lap times
The 'get on the power at the apex' rule is something I learned when racing karts in Europe on SUPER grippy tracks. Then I started to pay attention to onboard videos of F1 drivers and noticed they applied the same methodology. Obviously there are times when this rule doesn't apply but for the most part it always works. In karting the fundamentals are different compared to driving a car. For example in a car you maximise braking and throttle, so you brake late, stop the car and then try to get to 100% power as soon as possible. But in karting it's more important to carry speed through a corner and to be more gentle with the throttle.
@@DavidPerel It's been really tough trying to conserve that speed, the tracks around me (all indoors) love their hairpins all over the place. That's mostly where I was overdriving and getting squirrely. The sweeping corners were much better but for the life of me I do not enjoy the hairpins
These are all excellent tips, the fundamentals of racing, even. But my question is, what is the best way to train the looking ahead part, or how to train it?
