Mr Simpson I don’t think you realise just how you can grab someone’s soul and talk to there emotions with your guitar playing. Just like mr frusciante your amazing talent talks to my soul. And to be able to create that music your self and touch your own soul is a gift from the music gods
After being strictly acoustic for many years, I got meself a MIM Strat and a Katana 50. Then I found you and realized I had to learn some scales. You taught me that each fret and string is merely a doorway, the actual sound comes through your spirit. I had thought that effects pedals mask that sound, but now realize they can actually make clearer the sound from within.
I ordered the WH10 V3 back in February from Japan. I received it today here in Scotland. I have had a very fun afternoon trying it out! I think I will ride out the quarantine with the new addition to my pedal board. As ever, thanks for your videos and really helpful advice on arrangements/set up.
Hi Dave, after watching your video and review of the Ibanez wah pedal I have managed to purchase a second-hand V2 model so look forward to building up a board soon. All the very best, keep it up enjoying the content being down to earth and honest.
I can't wait until Fender releases the "Dave Simpson Limited Edition Custom Shop Strat" based on your '62. I will definitely buy one! Then stare at it while listening to you jam on youtube, cause there's no way i'm going to get the same sounds out of it. Thanks for doing what you do.
Dave you sure know how to get someone excited to purchase one for their own. It’s obvious that’s not even 1% your intention, however your excitement is so grand, you make others want to sound and experience the joy same as you. Bravo review 🙏🏻
Aprendi mucho de esta review! Hace 3 años que deseaba comprarme este pedal y ahora se como utilizarlo gracias a ti, Saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱, Thank You for the review ❤
Hi, Dave! Thank you for your video and music. At the con parts you forgot to mention that squeaky sound that the WH10v2 does after it collects some dust. You know the issue that makes you tear-it-apart once a couple of months and spray it with some technical alcohol and then it sounds good again. I take this opportunity to say THANK YOU for your WH10v2 cleaning video that you made some time ago. It has literally SAVED my Ibanez WH10v2 from the trash bin. See you on your next video, Dave! PS: I got the Jackhammer in october last year after your video review and I can only say that it's an amazing pedal and "I love it to bits". The price was very cheap for what it has to offer and I can't thank you enough for recommending it. Cheers!
Nice to know this Dave, John’s tone is definitely something I’m interested in, I can sort of achieve it with the katana but it’s not the same as a pedal. Definitely can’t do the wah wah stuff without the Ibanez.👍
@@Diax1324 some frusciante nuts have already seen some of the new pedals he used in that little chili peppers gig back in February, I believe he's not using the wh10 anymore, I kind of saw this red wah pedal but not sure what exact brand it is but is doesn't look like the wh10
@@Alex-ms1tt It was an Xotic wah. Looked like a pedalboard assembled from guitar center to me. Appeared he was using a Boss waza SD-1 or something, too. Definitely not DS-2. Reissue Marshall Jubilee as well. My guess is he sold most of his guitar stuff when he got into electronic music, and that at their new gigs/in the new album he might bust out a synth or two, and will certainly take a more avant garde approach to guitar.
The V3 has exactly the same issue with the rubber pieces making the pedal difficult to turn on when stood up but impossible when sat down. Took a Stanley blade to it yesterday, trimmed it down, job done
Final moments! I mostly listen to these whilst working and do not watch them, but as I glanced up at the screen after that soundscape and the way it sounded as it finished and saw the Dave-less room I wondered if he had turned his pedalboard into a Tardis and psychically transported himself out of the room into the land of gravy! Fantastic video and explanation of all things Wah!
Great and interesting video! However, regarding 30:55, my experience when using a silver jubilee amp is that you get the best result by having the amp set clean and then use the ce-1 for crunch.
You also did a very good video demo with that CE-1 that Will made. Unfortunately the price of that pedal is rather high for my budget so that's why I got the Marshall Jackhammer last year and I can say it worths twice its price, a truly phenomenal pedal. But if I had the money I would also try the CE-1 clone that Will made, even the small one which doesn't come with bells and whistles :) Cheers, Vigi! PS: loved your JF comeback analysis video :)
@@vatacale Yeah, I think using the jackhammer seem like a great solution too. The main point is that my experience is that you get best results by setting the silver jubilee clean and then get the crunch from a pedal. It does not need to be the ce-1. Setting the silver jubilee to a dirty setting does not turn out so well if you want to use other pedals as well, in my experience. Thank you! :)

. Dave, were you talking about "giving" or "feeding" the IBANEZ WH10V2 the Jackhammer signal? But isn't your Jackhammer downstream after the wah? So am I right in thinking the Jackhammer compresses & smooths out the guitar sound whatever goes into/before it? So basically, John uses his amp's Preamp to control his Ibanez wah? PS - The WH10 is really expensive now and is the v3 worth the Bypass switch? PPS - The "outro jam" was some of most mesmerising guitar playing I have ever witnessed - Dave, you are an immense talent ❤ Thank You
Hello Dave, wonderful video, better than the previous review, could we inform the pedalboard signal chain? I followed all your saga to this day about jous frusciante, and lately was marathoning Q&A, I am speechless for you have all this knowledge and pass on to people, we are very grateful for your help! A good idea would be to make a video about all your jous frusciante equipment so far, in a single video, to do your pedal, amplifier and signal chain settings would be awesome! Excellent youtube channel, I recommend to all my friends who play RHCP! I hope you have a prosperous year Mr. Dave Simpson, greetings from Brasil!
Hey man I've been watching a bunch of your videos recently and I was wondering how you bend your strings so high without letting the other strings ring out. I'm at the start of my guitar journey and I would really like to eventually use guitar as my outlet so I don't have to deal with my clouded mind. Thanks in advance! Also could you tell me what sting gauge you're using?
I am using 10 - 46 D'addario strings and I have a fairly high action and its just practise more than anything. Just finding what feels right to you. One thing i will say about bending is though that you want to be bending from your wrist not your fingers. : )
Hi Dave, happy new year, have you tried any of the Boss effects pedals? if so what is your opinion?, I've been looking at some and would like your opinion as I respect what you say, thanks.
Dave, do you remember what your amp settings were during this video? I have just gotten myself a Wh10 and I have the overdriven sort of tone that you were talking about and the volume still skyrockets
thx, cool video dave ...very informative! i have tested the new carl martin panama OD with low gain setting and i think it also works very well together with the DS2 and WH10 to get a john tone. have you already played the CM panama?
I could cut a bit of the rubber strip the whole one and stick a bit under the tread plate hopefully it will make it a normal wah turn on again it's way too easy to turn on for me I have to use the sweep gently I don't know why I did I thought that was it no longer gonna be used
Mr.Dave do you have and/or use a DS1?.... if I purchase a Fender Champion, would the chorus on that be enough to sound like Cobain?...thanks .. I am still loving your channel buddy
Would it be possible to get a demo on the Boss ME-70 if you can get ahold of one? I have one and completely in the dark with the thing and the demos on UA-cam are completely rubbish, don't explain much of any "how to" dial sounds in...
HI Dave, thanks for the review. I ve asked my wife to buy me this toy on my birthday :D How do you record your playing in this room ? The sound is cool.
Hey Dave, was gonna ask this question in a Q&A but how would the signal path you described for the Jackhammer, WH10 V2 and DS2 factor in in terms of a Fuzzrite Clone, Big Muff, Micro Amp, Phaser and Chorus pedal? What order would you put them all in for a John tone and to make the WH10 and DS2 behave themselves Thanks!
I know how to do it now but even though John went Amp Boss Ce-1 then Ibanez Wh10 V1 black version then Phase 90 then Black Russian Big Muff then Ds2 and then Guitar does that give you the white noise or did he run it differently in the Californication era. It's if I was going to buy all the other pedals.
Hi Dave - I loove youre playing dude!!! could you do a video on how to actually achieve the sound - i mean the playing technique? Like when actually swipe forward with the foot and when back and so on... because I have the same pedal (v3) and i have a tubescreamer and a mxr micro amp before it. but it doesnt sound nearly as good as your playing... ampwise i am using a blackstar htr1 (for home use). cheers robin
Maaan this is GREAAAT!!! Thank you!!! I have this wah and i was pissed off because of that high volume and that destroying of clean sound but with that pedal it is so much better. Can you please confirm exact model of pedal: Marshall JH-1 Jackhammer???
Have you had a chance to try the V3 ? I’m currently looking at buying the V2 on reverb but not sure if the v3 would be a better option as I’ll be getting charged very similarly. I’m in a pickle
In this setup the jackhammer works as booster so if I get one my mxr micro amp would be out of the game, right? Thanks for the tips, I have a purple v1 and a v2 with the same trick u made for the rubbers and I use both of them :) lovely pedals
So did I get it right that he runs the distortion before the WH10 in the pedal chain? I always thought to believe that the Wah is first in Johns FX Chain.
The jackhammer overdrive is after the Wah... this already caused me a lot of confusion in the first video back then. I guess "it wants a xyz signal" is a Daveism for "put xyz pedal after it" 😎 - the DS-2 and any fuzz will be before the wah (as in "between guitar and wah")
Hey Dave, I love your vids so much man and your tunes👍. I have really helped me with improving my technique through your older play like Frusciante vids. I have watched your vid on the BSSM tone hunt like 50 million times but, I wanted to ask you on how to get that raunchy ass tone on give it away like John does, how does he get that kinda overdriven twangy tone?
Thank you very much indeed. John gets that tone by using the bridge pickup and basically having that dirty clean tone. You just have to really hit the guitar. : )
Is it enough to switch to a crunch / overdrive channel on the amp or is it crucial to get the pedal? I wonder whether that OD pedal goes before the Wah or after it (the last in the chain effect chain of DS-2, Wh10v2 and then this pedal).
Dave, just watched your For John Album video and it was seriously unreal, but i had to come back to this video to ask for a link to somewhere i can buy this ibanez wah pedal, i seriously need it to get the john sound. I live in Brisbane Australia and i cannot find it anywhere over in this part of the world. 👍🏼
Hi Dave you’re probably sick about these questions but I’m running distortion pedal - wah - OD it sounds great! But my problem is when I engage the distortion pedal the level is the same as my clean tone and I need more volume playing in a band, any tips for having dist before wah but still getting a volume boost?
I have the original and honestly it’s ok, I prefer the bad horsie. Going to sell my WH-1 because it just sits and doesn’t get used. Different strokes for different folks....
Let's say you have an amp like a VOX AC-15 with no distortion chanel (only a Volume or 'gain' knob on Top Boost)? Just turn the knob enough to get the proper overdrive?
I have an original WH10 that doesn't wah anymore 😥 I'd love to fix it and put it into my V2's enclosure, as suggested by Dave. I took it it to a repair shop once but was told plastic pedals aint worth fixing... so if anybody has a repair guide/troubleshoot, please let me know!
i dont recall you mentioning this in the vid but i know from prior vids you run the ds-2 with level on max (obviously). im pretty sure you also run everything else on 10/max (amp, guitar). i cant play as loud as you (and im not as good) so my amp is on 4 volume (10/11 o'clock). if i put the ds-2 level on max there is that massive volume jump but i think it is because my amp is maxed out as well. i have the ds-2 level around 10 o'clock (pretty much the same position as my amp volume) and the jump isnt prominent. i think the wh10 acts similarly with the depth knob. ive always used it at 10 but it does make levels jump. turning it down seems to calm it down. was this a dumb comment? i feel like this may have been obvious stuff ive said. idk hopefully it was useful!
I always had the same problem. But then I realized I just needed more crunch/gain from the amp, since I don’t have a golden plexi or another distortion pedal. Try to find the sweet spot and right amount of gain, just to that point where your DS-2 and WH-10 no longer have any volume jumps. Dave also mentions it in the Video, the WH-10 and DS2 need a compressed tone, which you either get from your Amps distortion or a distortion pedal. Johns tone Sounds clean but it really isn’t . He talks about it from 10:05 .Hope that helps :D
@@Timon898 i play out of a bass amp that only has volume and eq lol so i dont think that helps. i use the same jackhammer overdrive as dave with the same settings though
I did a google see if I can find one in Australia. On ebay its 285.00 AUD. second hand. So I couldn't find a single Ibanez wah peddle at a music store in OZ.

PPS - The "outro jam" was some of most mesmerising guitar playing I have ever witnessed - Dave, you are an immense talent ❤ Thank You
Half a year ago I almost got my hands on 2 original WH10 v1 around 100$ each, thought about sending you 1 as a gift but some1 bought them before me :(
Hello Dave, wonderful video, better than the previous review, could we inform the pedalboard signal chain? I followed all your saga to this day about jous frusciante, and lately was marathoning Q&A, I am speechless for you have all this knowledge and pass on to people, we are very grateful for your help!
A good idea would be to make a video about all your jous frusciante equipment so far, in a single video, to do your pedal, amplifier and signal chain settings would be awesome!
Excellent youtube channel, I recommend to all my friends who play RHCP! I hope you have a prosperous year Mr. Dave Simpson, greetings from Brasil!
Thank you very much indeed. : )
i have a V3 and its good but not too much different. Maybe a bit more gain.
I'm hanging on..wah wise.I want a Dave Simpson signature model.👍
Hey man I've been watching a bunch of your videos recently and I was wondering how you bend your strings so high without letting the other strings ring out. I'm at the start of my guitar journey and I would really like to eventually use guitar as my outlet so I don't have to deal with my clouded mind. Thanks in advance!
Also could you tell me what sting gauge you're using?
I am using 10 - 46 D'addario strings and I have a fairly high action and its just practise more than anything. Just finding what feels right to you. One thing i will say about bending is though that you want to be bending from your wrist not your fingers. : )
@@thedavesimpson Ahh alright. Thanks for the advice!
V3 CAME OUT! Review it Dave! :D
Great stuff as usual, Dave! Just wondering, do you think the MXR micro amp should suffice to tame the WH10 instead of the Jackhammer?
I don't no. The MXR doesn't do the job i don't feel.
thx, cool video dave ...very informative! i have tested the new carl martin panama OD with low gain setting and i think it also works very well together with the DS2 and WH10 to get a john tone. have you already played the CM panama?
Thank you very much indeed. : )
I haven't tried that pedal sadly no.
Thank you so much!
Thank you very much. : )
I could cut a bit of the rubber strip the whole one and stick a bit under the tread plate hopefully it will make it a normal wah turn on again it's way too easy to turn on for me I have to use the sweep gently I don't know why I did I thought that was it no longer gonna be used
Hey Dave quick question, would you recommend putting a compressor pedal before the wh10 in the same way you put the overdrive before it?
I would yeps. :)
@@thedavesimpson thank you!
Ok I just ordered the pedal because of this review.
@Ibanez sponsor Dave Simpson
Mr.Dave do you have and/or use a DS1?.... if I purchase a Fender Champion, would the chorus on that be enough to sound like Cobain?...thanks .. I am still loving your channel buddy
I used to have a DS1 but i prefer the DS2. The chorus willdo an ok job for Kurt yeps. :)
Thank you very much indeed. : )
Would it be possible to get a demo on the Boss ME-70 if you can get ahold of one? I have one and completely in the dark with the thing and the demos on UA-cam are completely rubbish, don't explain much of any "how to" dial sounds in...
If i can get hold of one then yeps. : )
What order would you put them all in for a John tone and to make the WH10 and DS2 behave themselves
Thanks!
about John Frusciante, his CE1 compresses the signal, is this that makes john's wh10 stay without the volume jump?
It helps but his amps do alot.
May i ask why a tru bypas WAH isn’t so good as I just ordered one and I don’t wanna have any late second thoughts
I love the Ibanez wh10 v2
I know how to do it now but even though John went Amp Boss Ce-1 then Ibanez Wh10 V1 black version then Phase 90 then Black Russian Big Muff then Ds2 and then Guitar does that give you the white noise or did he run it differently in the Californication era. It's if I was going to buy all the other pedals.
Hi Dave - I loove youre playing dude!!! could you do a video on how to actually achieve the sound - i mean the playing technique? Like when actually swipe forward with the foot and when back and so on... because I have the same pedal (v3) and i have a tubescreamer and a mxr micro amp before it. but it doesnt sound nearly as good as your playing... ampwise i am using a blackstar htr1 (for home use).
cheers
robin
What is that red pedal to the left of the wah
John might get the Ibanez wah v3
Guitar Tricks lol
nice video, does the blues breaker and govner work well with the wh10 and ds2 too?
Indeed they do. : )
I persona;;y wouldn't recommend the MXR at all. I would go for an overdrive pedal. : )
Then please do recommend it so I can sell it fast :D thanks my 2nd hand jackhammer is on its way, so looks like the mxr is ready to go
So did I get it right that he runs the distortion before the WH10 in the pedal chain?
Thank so much man👍
Is it enough to switch to a crunch / overdrive channel on the amp or is it crucial to get the pedal? I wonder whether that OD pedal goes before the Wah or after it (the last in the chain effect chain of DS-2, Wh10v2 and then this pedal).
GOOD. GRAVY. DAVID...........GOOD GRAVY..
Thank you very much. : )
I’m thinking ab getting a v3 wh10
Hi Dave, u think the wh10v3 it's good enough? Have you ever tried it?, now the v2 became like a vintage stuff and it cost too much
Dave, just watched your For John Album video and it was seriously unreal, but i had to come back to this video to ask for a link to somewhere i can buy this ibanez wah pedal, i seriously need it to get the john sound. I live in Brisbane Australia and i cannot find it anywhere over in this part of the world. 👍🏼
I really don't know a link 'm afraid. Try either Ebay or Reverb. :)
Dave Simpson no worries at all mate! I’ll have a look around 🤙🏼 thank you
Do you recommend a V1 the (Grey Version) John uses. The only risk is if it breaks.
Hi Dave you’re probably sick about these questions but I’m running distortion pedal - wah - OD it sounds great! But my problem is when I engage the distortion pedal the level is the same as my clean tone and I need more volume playing in a band, any tips for having dist before wah but still getting a volume boost?
Your distortion would have to be on the amp side of the chain to get a volume jump.
I would recommend investing in a clean boost pedal. : )
Dave Simpson thanks! I’m also going to get a boss LS2 so I switch between clean tone and dist tone without the pedal dancing
If that was the case I'd buy a pedal and use it as an always on and just have the amp set clean. : )
So you're adding some dirt pre-DS2 and pre-wah?
Guitar - OD - Ds2 - Wah - Amp?
Will made this Ce-1 ensemble crunch pedal and it has that Crunch tone from John or you could get the Triungular lab Ce-1.
I had one and it didn't work for me. Plus thats not where all of Johns pedal control comes from.
Hey Dave, do you think the pedal would work well with an ibanez 5 watt tube screamer amp? I live in an apartment and cant get too loud
I'm not sure as when i tried to combine the WH with a tubescreamer it didn't like it. I really don't know sorry. : (
@@thedavesimpson no worries, thanks for the response! Killer playing by the way! Love your vids
whats the pedal he uses to stop the wh10 from going crazy loud ?
Marshall jackhammer.
🔝
Do you keep the boxes I always keep the boxes I've still got my Ds2 box and I keep it inside.
What is that red fab pedal? :)
danelectro coolcat fuzz :)
@@mrfebrero thank you :)
man you struck my soul
I have a v2 but the potentiometer is kind of dead. It cracks and sometimes goes mute, no matter how much I clean it. Maybe I'll get a v3 eventually.
The volume jump nearly burst my f*****g eardrums listening through headphones lol
Hey, I have the WH10 V3. Does somebody know the difference between V2 and V3?
Hi Dave! What jackhammer settings do you have dialed in?
I'll do a video on my settings soon. :)
@@thedavesimpson Thanks Dave, love the vids!
Where did you get your Ibanez wh10 v2 from.
This one was bought for me in 2010 i think and the other was a gift. :)
i dont recall you mentioning this in the vid but i know from prior vids you run the ds-2 with level on max (obviously). im pretty sure you also run everything else on 10/max (amp, guitar). i cant play as loud as you (and im not as good) so my amp is on 4 volume (10/11 o'clock). if i put the ds-2 level on max there is that massive volume jump but i think it is because my amp is maxed out as well. i have the ds-2 level around 10 o'clock (pretty much the same position as my amp volume) and the jump isnt prominent.
i think the wh10 acts similarly with the depth knob. ive always used it at 10 but it does make levels jump. turning it down seems to calm it down.
was this a dumb comment? i feel like this may have been obvious stuff ive said. idk hopefully it was useful!
Buddhismism oh ok haha
I did a google see if I can find one in Australia. On ebay its 285.00 AUD. second hand. So I couldn't find a single Ibanez wah peddle at a music store in OZ.
:(
