I've bought a Vox because of this video. The Ibanez is so expensive in Brazil, and since it easily could break, the Vox one is a better option. Yesterday I've tried for the first time and was amazed by the results. Thanks Dave!
Hi Dave! First, I have to admit I am glad you still keep on sharing with us your endless knowledge about Frusciante, and all the facets of his playing style, with this being of HUGE importance for whoever seeks to get close to his sound. Secondly, I wanted to ask you: do you think the fact that the Vox v847 does not come with true bypass is negatively affecting the clean sound of the pedalboard? Thank you from Italy 🎸
I have both (the modded wilson effects WH10 with the vintage specs) and i have to agree with you Dave, the Vox is a wonderful piece of machine and beats the shit out of the WH10! I love both though :D
For myself I prefer the W-10 wah. Reason being that it really changed my tone in many ways. It toe down after a boost gave me a perfect blues tone. Mid way gave me a muddy distortion feel. Low gave me a weird fuzz vibe. And then the actual wah at work gave me amazing tones. The boost knob can help the volume jump for effect, or be low for beginners for those without as much gear. Overall, it has more diversity for the many different styles I play from jazz at school, worship at church, and at home practice for multiple styles
I'm thinking of selling m y 535q cause it gets neither of the high frequencies that both the vox and ibanez pull of here... Even if youre using the highest frequency setting...

I have always loved the Dunlop Crybaby original. Bought my first in 84 and still have one! I don't suppose it makes a great deal of difference with a driven sound. Always the Crybaby for me (though I will add true-bypass and an LED to mine shortly). Great hearing you play Dave :)
The Wilson Effects Ten Spot II V.2 is an excellent, more reliable version of the WH10. The Wilson Funk Factory is another option, with more flexibility. Either would get you to WH10 world and won’t break if you step on them too hard. ☮️☮️
That intro was so good. I hope you record them asides for the video purposes haha. This video will help soooo many people for the years the wh10 is hens teeth. Great job man so inspiring.
This is a blimmin' great video Dave. The Vox wins but that is partly because you like it so much - you can't hide it in either your words or playing :D To my ears the Ibanez is not as expressive - if they were making the "wahs" with a mouth, the Vox is really going for it and the Ibanez is keeping its cool.
Whelp, that's almost a year ago. I like your playing more when you are aggressive as opposed to introspective. Differences are subtle but VOX 847 all the way! Just my view.
I have a hard time deciding what I like better from a UA-cam video. However, I've never really been able to get what I want out of a Crybaby (or the Xotic I spent too much money on) but the Vox works for me. I've never tried an Ibanez, but maybe I don't need to after having watched this.
I own both pedals, and the VOX is my favorite of the two. It also sounds great half cocked or turned and left on. I would definitely buy another VOX if something ever happened to it. 🐒
I had the wh10 but just got to the vox v847 I prefer the sound of the vox well when it actually works for some reason sometimes when I press the pedal it completely cuts the sound
I've had a Crybaby for about 16 years or so. It's had 3 different switches and 2 pots in that time. It makes a loud bang through the amp whenever I turn it on, and now the switch is failing again on it... I think it may be time to replace. 😂 Only thing that makes me hesitate to get the Vox is I've read about it sucking treble while disengaged. I had the same issue with the Crybaby and had a true bypass mod done to fix it (that's what introduced the bang noise when I engage it)... Although that said, back then I didn't have a pedal board, and I was just plugging pedals in when I needed them, so the tone suck was really noticeable whenever the wah was in the signal chain vs without. Might not be so much of an issue if it's permanently part of the signal chain, and EQ'd to compensate.
Out of the two, the Vox sounded better. But, as far as my preferences go, I went with a Dunlop "Crybaby From Hell" from 2002 until a week ago. I used it more as a tonal filter kind of thing, rather than the "wacka wacka wacka" type of stuff. It would get a great "groany" sort of sound on its lowest end and when dialed in just right with the knobs on the sides, I could go from that to a classic "Swedish" Death Metal type of tone. But, as time has gone on, I was using it less and less. It was at the point where I was just using it as a splitter and for a very light bit of clean tonal variation. Eventually, I decided to dig out my old Ibanez DE7 delay and use that as the "splitter" with a tiny bit of slapback delay. The wah has been sold and should be in the hands of its new owner today. I'm one of those people that as soon as a piece of gear falls out of favor, it's out the door. I can't stand seeing gear going to waste. So, off ye go.
Opening jam is Epic! Going to take a wah plunge and it’s down to these two. Wh10 attractive for standard John reason but might be best for versatility of vox as let’s face it I’ll never be John regardless of gear 😂😂
@@thedavesimpson Can you explain? Do you see chord tones? Pentatonics mixed with major or minor scales? Modes? Or you just play what sounds nice to you?

Nice video Dave, I have one question you said that vox is better than the cry baby what do you think about Dave Navarro tone? He have a nice wah wah tone and with the chili peppers he used a cry baby too, is there any chance that you can play some of that stuff?
Hi Dave, love the videos especially the Peter Green series. Sometime last year I watched one of your videos on the Vox 847 wah pedal where you described a simple mod which made playing easier as you removed something from under the foot plate so you don’t have to press so hard on the toe to turn on/off. I have just literally watched loads of your reviews/comparisons but can’t locate the one I’m after. Would you mind pointing me in the right direction please. Thank you, Les
Hi Dave, I’ve got a video idea for you as part of the Frusciante series. Live Licks! So it could be a bunch of songs like Snow, Can’t stop, Dani California, Give it Away etc, showing some of the little extra licks he throws in live to spice the songs up. I know you touched upon it on the Scar Tissue vid but I think that would be a really cool idea. Also, there are exactly zero videos on UA-cam that demonstrate the live licks for a bunch of the famous songs back to back.
Vox is cleaner but it is a bit gnarlier compared to ibanez that sounds smoother. If in a loud band rock setting I would prefer Vox to cut through. Also Vox would probably sound amazing with a Les Paul
I'd be interested to know if the Wah's on the Helix FX are any good. I believe you can get an expression pedal allowing you to use the Wah models properly on that.
@@thedavesimpson That would be cool. I have a pretty minimalist pedalboard just OD, Distortion, Reverb and delay. I haven't got a WAH yet. I think I have some kind of OCD because the jumble of cables and mismatching pedals mildly irritate me. So I plan to get a helix FX in the next few months, you sold me on that with how great your sounding these days. I had mixed feelings about the slight mid/low boost when you compared it to your pedalboard. But the last few weeks it's sounded phenomenal.
They’re both beautiful pedals, but I prefer the WH-10. I hear more bright high tones at the top of the sweep from it in this video, but others have argued differently. Tone is probably tough to convey thru your recording and my phone’s speaker. But I like the idea of one step to get what I want rather than having to hit a DS-2/Guvaner as well. I vote Ibanez, but I need to get better with my Cry Baby before I seriously consider the upgrade.
Hey Dave! I'm still an intermediate guitar player that got helped by your how to play series! I got a Vox v847 but I have the guvnor too, i was just wondering what the settings are for your guvnor to achieve that gain boost that the ibanez wh10 have? thank you :)
Great comparison Dave. Good to know that is posible to replicate the WH-10 sound with another wah, especially after being discounted and very hard to find. I think if the WH-10 didn't require so much commitment it would be the ultimate wah. Question to replicate the WH10 with the Vox wah you put OD after the Vox wah? Also when you mention that the WH10 demands a dirty signal do you always add an OD after the WH10?
Hey Dave! In my country there are no ibanez wh10,or just a few and very expensive, so, do you think i can replace the wh10 with the vox? My will is to get the frusciante wha tone
Hey Dave Im having some problems with my Vox, when Im using clean amp with my ce1 preamp, Boss SD-1 and Boss DS-2 and rock my foot back in the pedal (with the low frequencies), it basically just make noises and you cant realy hear the guitar. Half the sweep to the top the volume suddenly reapears with a lot of high frequencies. Any ideia on how to fix that? Sorry im not a good english speaker
I'm going to buy my first wah pedal but really don't know wich one I have to buy between this two, I love frusciante stuff above all but I don't know if in future I will use also wah with a not super compressed sound
Dave, I know this is an old vid but is the Vox the American one that is battery only or the modern one from the far east that has a 9volt plug in? Cheers
@@thedavesimpson cheers Dave. I’ve had both but preferred the USA model. Quite expensive on eBay now. Just taken delivery of the WH10 v3 and getting to grips with it. Keep the vids coming mate and thanks for the reply 👍🎸
Hi Dave, What about the Dunlop Dimebag wah “from hell” as an alternative to the Ibanez wh10 for sounding like John Frusciante. I’ve read recently on Reddit that he might have used it during the Stadium Arcadium recordings. Don’t know if it’s true but in your opinion would you recommend it? The Wilson effect wah wich is a replica of the WH10 isnot cheap and definitely not easy to find... Thanks for all your great video. Cheers mate!
Would a graphic eq like a boss ge7 prior to the vox emulate the wh10 gain increase do you think? Eq set flat but level at +3DB or so. I've always used an original crybaby too and whilst i like it with clean tones it's a bit bright and also doesn't handle distortion too well, sounding more like a switch at times than a sweep. After watching this and a few other vids I'm in the market for a new wah pedal for more of a frusciante sound and the vox seems easier to find and cheaper!
@@thedavesimpson i may be the one to try it then, already got a ge7. Vox wah is cheap off ebay. It won't add distortion of its own in, but the boosting of the signal will overdrive the input of the amp for sure so it might have a similar effect. Will let you know/ do a vid! Thanks again for all the straight up no messing super helpful vids 😊
Hi dave, I already have a jackhammer, and a ds-2. I'm going to buy the vox, so the question is, can you put on top a distortion or overdrive patch on the zoom g2 to replicate the wh10 clean fru tone you got with the guvnor on top of the vox?

I know you touched upon it on the Scar Tissue vid but I think that would be a really cool idea. Also, there are exactly zero videos on UA-cam that demonstrate the live licks for a bunch of the famous songs back to back.
Thats a really cool idea. I'll have a look about and see how to do it. : )
Thank you. : )
You're The Man!
have you tried the new model VOX V847-A? I wonder wether it is still good? thanks Dave
I tried it and I think its good wah still:)
I'm curious about that to. I'll have to buy an expression pedal. : )
The 847c is the wah for me it's a massive improvement on the 847.
What is the difference between the 847 and the 847c?
Super zvuce, dobro sviras sa wah wahom
Hi Dave, How about the VOX V845 Model? You had tried in Andertons music video. Can I use it for John Frusciante sound or should I get v847?
You can use it yeps but the sweeps a bit lacking.
Hey Dave , just curious if you have used both the V847 and the V847A and if so, have you found a difference between the two ?
Thank you for watching and I always have the od on the left of the wah. : )
Thanks Dave! Now I got it
Hey dave, i gonna buy a V847A my question is, can the boss blues driver with the gain on top replicate overdrive sound of the WH10?
Thanks buddy
It can get very close yeps.
Hey Dave! In my country there are no ibanez wh10,or just a few and very expensive, so, do you think i can replace the wh10 with the vox? My will is to get the frusciante wha tone
You can indeed do that but you'll need to boost the box with an overdrive pedal. : )
@@thedavesimpson Hi Dave, you would put the overdrive pedal before or after the Vox ?
Hey Dave Im having some problems with my Vox, when Im using clean amp with my ce1 preamp, Boss SD-1 and Boss DS-2 and rock my foot back in the pedal (with the low frequencies), it basically just make noises and you cant realy hear the guitar. Half the sweep to the top the volume suddenly reapears with a lot of high frequencies. Any ideia on how to fix that?
Sorry im not a good english speaker
Sadly it sounds like the pots gone wrong. You’ll need to get a replacement pot.
I'm going to buy my first wah pedal but really don't know wich one I have to buy between this two, I love frusciante stuff above all but I don't know if in future I will use also wah with a not super compressed sound
Same problem here mate, I can get a Vox and the Ibanez with a 50€ difference, but still can't decide what to go for.
Dave, I know this is an old vid but is the Vox the American one that is battery only or the modern one from the far east that has a 9volt plug in? Cheers
Its the eastern one.
@@thedavesimpson cheers Dave. I’ve had both but preferred the USA model. Quite expensive on eBay now. Just taken delivery of the WH10 v3 and getting to grips with it.
Keep the vids coming mate and thanks for the reply 👍🎸
What is the pedal order? Wah befor of after governor? And what about the plexi pedal? Thank u, you’re a great great guitar player
Amp - Guv'nor - Plexi - Wah - Guitar
Thank you very much. :)
Hey String King just one question what kind of cab u use with the mg 100 thx in advance thx for the video’s
I am using the Marshall JCM9000 A cab. Thank you for watching. : )
Hi Dave,
What about the Dunlop Dimebag wah “from hell” as an alternative to the Ibanez wh10 for sounding like John Frusciante.
I've never tried that wah so i can't comment i am afraid.Thank you very much indeed for watching. : )
I wouldn't say so. You need more of a gain boost. But saying that I don;t 100% know. :)
You can yeps. :)
@@thedavesimpson Great, and what do you think it's better for that? OD or dist?
