I've bought a Vox because of this video. The Ibanez is so expensive in Brazil, and since it easily could break, the Vox one is a better option. Yesterday I've tried for the first time and was amazed by the results. Thanks Dave!

Hi Dave! First, I have to admit I am glad you still keep on sharing with us your endless knowledge about Frusciante, and all the facets of his playing style, with this being of HUGE importance for whoever seeks to get close to his sound. Secondly, I wanted to ask you: do you think the fact that the Vox v847 does not come with true bypass is negatively affecting the clean sound of the pedalboard? Thank you from Italy 🎸
Vox all day long, have tested some other brands, Ibanez, Behringer, and others, but Vox, man,....it has that classic sound,..in my humble opinion, Love ya´playing and vibe dear Dave❤🙏🙏🙏
For myself I prefer the W-10 wah. Reason being that it really changed my tone in many ways. It toe down after a boost gave me a perfect blues tone. Mid way gave me a muddy distortion feel. Low gave me a weird fuzz vibe. And then the actual wah at work gave me amazing tones. The boost knob can help the volume jump for effect, or be low for beginners for those without as much gear. Overall, it has more diversity for the many different styles I play from jazz at school, worship at church, and at home practice for multiple styles
It's very humid here in the tropics and I got fed up with the pot in my wah needing to be replaced all the time. They failed literally within a year, even expensive replacements. I now have an AMT Japanese Girl wah, which is the size of a Boss pedal and is optical. It's not the same as a traditional wah, but for me it does the job and it also has selectable voicings, which make it sound more synth like or vocal like (I even managed to do a convincing talkbox sound with it on New Year's Eve when we played "Livin' on a Prayer") !!! Anyway I think I preferred the Vox in this video.
To be honest, both the pedals were great. It is really hard to decide which one sounds better. I think the Vox is more subtle. But you make them both sound great anyway 👍👍👍👍😃😃
hi Dave i have 6 wahs ( Vox.Morley,Ibanez,Boss, GT8 and an unmarked) but prefer using the Vox because the overall tone and action by comparison to the rest is the best. i've had it for at least 30 years and it still works. i was using it in the Cochise cover you had a look at on my channel. peace man
I have always loved the Dunlop Crybaby original. Bought my first in 84 and still have one! I don't suppose it makes a great deal of difference with a driven sound. Always the Crybaby for me (though I will add true-bypass and an LED to mine shortly). Great hearing you play Dave :)
Thanks Dave, u have made it easy for me to make my decision, I will get the Vox, I do want the Ibanez cause to me it sounds slightly better but that little bit better sound in my opinion doesn't justify the price people are asking for them and how hard to find, and the issues u mentioned.
I have a mostly complete JP Led Zep stand alone rig minus the Marshall's cuz I'm just a lowly shift worker with dietary needs but am building everything else around a ZOOM G5u / VOXac30vr cuz of your 1 yr old vid on the G2.1u . I feel like I have a mouth full of bees. I like the VOX. The sweep is sweeter, brighter, crisper. To my ears. I would also like to add that I am an old. My JP rig is a Chibson with jonseyblues custom wound TTop/PAF pups & push pull 21 tone harness plus old school germanium boost fx. Most youngsters don't want to get into that stuff when you can emulate everything through a 'puter of some description + software like that provided by the ZOOM. But a wah pedal needs to be physical.
I personally use a Dunlop crybaby bass wah with my guitar just because it sounds insane and it's used by one of my heroes too. To me I think the ibanez sounds the best out of the two purely because of that boost. Another great video Dave
Vox for its overall ease of use and it’s better tones for my ear. However I think the Ibanez had a better sweep. They seem in the demo to be sooo close its really up to the individual. Great video as always but your room looks barren without the wall of amps.
Whelp, that's almost a year ago. I like your playing more when you are aggressive as opposed to introspective. Differences are subtle but VOX 847 all the way! Just my view.
Normaly I prefer simple pedals, so the Vox should be my choice. But I have got an Ibanez weeping demon wha and I like it a lot. It is very adjustable and you have a mode that it kicks immidiately in when you step on it and it turn off if you step off. You do not need to step on a knob. That works good for me.
Fun fact, the Wah pedal was originally designed for the electric trumpet (hence the Clyde McCoy naming, he was a popular trumpeter at the time). As the trumpets were miked they couldn't use a plunger mute so the wah was invented to replicate the effect.
Out of the two, the Vox sounded better. But, as far as my preferences go, I went with a Dunlop "Crybaby From Hell" from 2002 until a week ago. I used it more as a tonal filter kind of thing, rather than the "wacka wacka wacka" type of stuff. It would get a great "groany" sort of sound on its lowest end and when dialed in just right with the knobs on the sides, I could go from that to a classic "Swedish" Death Metal type of tone. But, as time has gone on, I was using it less and less. It was at the point where I was just using it as a splitter and for a very light bit of clean tonal variation. Eventually, I decided to dig out my old Ibanez DE7 delay and use that as the "splitter" with a tiny bit of slapback delay. The wah has been sold and should be in the hands of its new owner today. I'm one of those people that as soon as a piece of gear falls out of favor, it's out the door. I can't stand seeing gear going to waste. So, off ye go.
That intro was so good. I hope you record them asides for the video purposes haha. This video will help soooo many people for the years the wh10 is hens teeth. Great job man so inspiring.
Opening jam is Epic! Going to take a wah plunge and it’s down to these two. Wh10 attractive for standard John reason but might be best for versatility of vox as let’s face it I’ll never be John regardless of gear 😂😂
The Wilson Effects Ten Spot II V.2 is an excellent, more reliable version of the WH10. The Wilson Funk Factory is another option, with more flexibility. Either would get you to WH10 world and won’t break if you step on them too hard. ☮️☮️
This is a blimmin' great video Dave. The Vox wins but that is partly because you like it so much - you can't hide it in either your words or playing :D To my ears the Ibanez is not as expressive - if they were making the "wahs" with a mouth, the Vox is really going for it and the Ibanez is keeping its cool.
I have a hard time deciding what I like better from a UA-cam video. However, I've never really been able to get what I want out of a Crybaby (or the Xotic I spent too much money on) but the Vox works for me. I've never tried an Ibanez, but maybe I don't need to after having watched this.
So the Vox is a Mercedes and the Ibanez is an Alfa Romeo, one works and works good always, the other sometimes doesn't work or is temperamental but when it works it has a beautiful sound and drive lol
I own both pedals, and the VOX is my favorite of the two. It also sounds great half cocked or turned and left on. I would definitely buy another VOX if something ever happened to it. 🐒
Vox is cleaner but it is a bit gnarlier compared to ibanez that sounds smoother. If in a loud band rock setting I would prefer Vox to cut through. Also Vox would probably sound amazing with a Les Paul
They’re both beautiful pedals, but I prefer the WH-10. I hear more bright high tones at the top of the sweep from it in this video, but others have argued differently. Tone is probably tough to convey thru your recording and my phone’s speaker. But I like the idea of one step to get what I want rather than having to hit a DS-2/Guvaner as well. I vote Ibanez, but I need to get better with my Cry Baby before I seriously consider the upgrade.
I've had a Crybaby for about 16 years or so. It's had 3 different switches and 2 pots in that time. It makes a loud bang through the amp whenever I turn it on, and now the switch is failing again on it... I think it may be time to replace. 😂 Only thing that makes me hesitate to get the Vox is I've read about it sucking treble while disengaged. I had the same issue with the Crybaby and had a true bypass mod done to fix it (that's what introduced the bang noise when I engage it)... Although that said, back then I didn't have a pedal board, and I was just plugging pedals in when I needed them, so the tone suck was really noticeable whenever the wah was in the signal chain vs without. Might not be so much of an issue if it's permanently part of the signal chain, and EQ'd to compensate.
Could you please do a video turtorial on where to put the wah pedal to get the crazy white noise sound. I mean like getting the cables and showing us where it needs to be I'm not quite good at stuff like that.
I had the wh10 but just got to the vox v847 I prefer the sound of the vox well when it actually works for some reason sometimes when I press the pedal it completely cuts the sound
Hi Dave, love the videos especially the Peter Green series. Sometime last year I watched one of your videos on the Vox 847 wah pedal where you described a simple mod which made playing easier as you removed something from under the foot plate so you don’t have to press so hard on the toe to turn on/off. I have just literally watched loads of your reviews/comparisons but can’t locate the one I’m after. Would you mind pointing me in the right direction please. Thank you, Les
Hi Dave, I’ve got a video idea for you as part of the Frusciante series. Live Licks! So it could be a bunch of songs like Snow, Can’t stop, Dani California, Give it Away etc, showing some of the little extra licks he throws in live to spice the songs up. I know you touched upon it on the Scar Tissue vid but I think that would be a really cool idea. Also, there are exactly zero videos on UA-cam that demonstrate the live licks for a bunch of the famous songs back to back.
@@thedavesimpson Can you explain? Do you see chord tones? Pentatonics mixed with major or minor scales? Modes? Or you just play what sounds nice to you?
I think they both sound great, and that there's fuck all difference. sorry if that doesnt buy into your loyalties. they're both doing the same thing. stop worrying, pick up the one you can afford and crack on with making / recording music!
Hey Dave! I'm still an intermediate guitar player that got helped by your how to play series! I got a Vox v847 but I have the guvnor too, i was just wondering what the settings are for your guvnor to achieve that gain boost that the ibanez wh10 have? thank you :)
I'd be interested to know if the Wah's on the Helix FX are any good. I believe you can get an expression pedal allowing you to use the Wah models properly on that.
@@thedavesimpson That would be cool. I have a pretty minimalist pedalboard just OD, Distortion, Reverb and delay. I haven't got a WAH yet. I think I have some kind of OCD because the jumble of cables and mismatching pedals mildly irritate me. So I plan to get a helix FX in the next few months, you sold me on that with how great your sounding these days. I had mixed feelings about the slight mid/low boost when you compared it to your pedalboard. But the last few weeks it's sounded phenomenal.
Nice video Dave, I have one question you said that vox is better than the cry baby what do you think about Dave Navarro tone? He have a nice wah wah tone and with the chili peppers he used a cry baby too, is there any chance that you can play some of that stuff?
Good night friend, you know, I have a vox 847a and I love the sound of frusciante. This video allows me to modify it and wrap it to put a booster and a fuzz. Do you think that with the booster, the vox 847a acquires almost the same, that characteristic sound of ibanez wh10?. Thank you very much: D
Never been happy with my Crybaby. Been looking at both these pedals for a while, I might lean to the Vox, cause it's cheaper and easier to find. Also, I might stand on it and I'm afraid the Ibanez would break
Hi Dave, What about the Dunlop Dimebag wah “from hell” as an alternative to the Ibanez wh10 for sounding like John Frusciante. I’ve read recently on Reddit that he might have used it during the Stadium Arcadium recordings. Don’t know if it’s true but in your opinion would you recommend it? The Wilson effect wah wich is a replica of the WH10 isnot cheap and definitely not easy to find... Thanks for all your great video. Cheers mate!

Whats your thoughts on attenuators for big amps, would this allow bedroom playing with amp really pushing ? I think they both sound great, and that there's fuck all difference. sorry if that doesnt buy into your loyalties. they're both doing the same thing. stop worrying, pick up the one you can afford and crack on with making / recording music!
Vox sounds the closest to my white Cry Baby so my vote is for the Vox. I’d vote for the Cry Baby if you had one 😁
I love the intro
I LOVE WAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm curious about that to. I'll have to buy an expression pedal. : )
Damn just picked up a WH10V2 and now wish I got a V847 instead 😔
Nice video Dave, I have one question you said that vox is better than the cry baby what do you think about Dave Navarro tone? He have a nice wah wah tone and with the chili peppers he used a cry baby too, is there any chance that you can play some of that stuff?
Thank you very much and I'm not a Dave fan so I don't really have opinion. Sorry.
dude, luv that!
Amazing job on the intro man
Thank you very much. : )
Finally treated myself to a real wah pedal instead of a donner one lol will b my first real pedal that I've bought haha
Hey Dave , just curious if you have used both the V847 and the V847A and if so, have you found a difference between the two ?
Hi Dave! Great video! Have you used the v845? Do you you recommend it instead of 847? Thank you for making this videos
I have used it. I'm not a fan of it.
@@thedavesimpson thanks for answering bro! I'll go for the 847! 🤘
Thank you very much for watching and it can sound pretty close with a overdrive or distortion pedal yeps. : )
Hi Dave, How about the VOX V845 Model? You had tried in Andertons music video. Can I use it for John Frusciante sound or should I get v847?
You can use it yeps but the sweeps a bit lacking.
The 847c is the wah for me it's a massive improvement on the 847.
What is the difference between the 847 and the 847c?
First part sounded like Nick McCabe from The Verve... Please do a how to sound like The Verve!!!
Never been happy with my Crybaby. Been looking at both these pedals for a while, I might lean to the Vox, cause it's cheaper and easier to find. Also, I might stand on it and I'm afraid the Ibanez would break
Hi Dave,
What about the Dunlop Dimebag wah “from hell” as an alternative to the Ibanez wh10 for sounding like John Frusciante.
I've never tried that wah so i can't comment i am afraid.Thank you very much indeed for watching. : )
Hey dave, i gonna buy a V847A my question is, can the boss blues driver with the gain on top replicate overdrive sound of the WH10?
Thanks buddy
It can get very close yeps.
Hey big dave, ive never really used wah except here and there. Seems like apple to oramges. As a jimmy fan ive got to say vox simply because its plug and play and seemed a little brighter , I did like the ibanez also and the touch of gain it has. Im bias though ( jimi )
Off topic - I dig my ds1 in conjuction with my green russia fuzz. It gives me a pretty bitchin tone ( rock obviously. Whats your thoughts on attenuators for big amps, would this allow bedroom playing with amp really pushing ?
Ive been getting noise on my dely lately could that be from a daisying 6 pedals instead of using different ac leads ? Ive been waitng on your vid today as I am hooked. I just got a new ibanez RGA ever played one. I could pick your brain all day :) you should do a Monday show on teaching. I cant go a week without you bro, you have definately increased my playing and lit a fire under me and I thank you for that. Just curios, whats the most expensive pedal youve played and did you like it ?
Think i would like the amptweaker tight metal pro ( serious metal but pricey :) last note- i think i like my ds 1 better than my blues driver, and im sick or could that make sense. Sorry for the book but i love your opinions, thanks dave, come to houston and im buying the bear. Do you have guitar center out ther ?
Attenuators are great for that yeps. I would recommend them.
I'm not sure we do have a guitar centre no. :(
Thank you for watching. :)
