  • Check out our first impressions on the new 2021 Honda Pioneer 520, and comparing the pros and cons of our faithful 2018 Honda Pioneer 500 that we have loved for about three years now. How do they do on 'the ranch'!?
    Our trusty 2018 Honda Pioneer 500 Side by Side has stood out to us as a real favorite toy/tool/utv that we use on and around our 'ranch' (affectionately nick-named, not a real ranch by definition...). When we heard about the New Honda Pioneer 520, we figured for our uses, the addition of a dumping box would be a really helpful thing to have. Especially as our ranch evolves to provide us more food, and trails providing firewood from downed trees, among the hundreds of other things we could haul around. With resale values being strong, we decided to sell the 500 and make for us, a well worth it upgrade. While having both machines, we decided to take the rare opportunity and do a side by side comparison from the owner's perspective.
    Please throw us a like if you enjoyed this video! Feel free to subscribe if would like to see more of the kind of trouble we get up to. Video content may range heavily. From other review videos, to building a chicken coop, to blowing snow with our tractors, to indoor and outdoor vegetable gardening here in Northern Ontario. Time will tell (speaking of time, we need more free time to get these videos happening more often). Basically a homesteading channel.
    This is our first attempt at a product review video, so apologies for some extra wind noise and other flaws.
    Check our insta for more frequent ranch road posts! @ranch_rd
    Please comment with suggestions or questions you may have! We can update the description here as required.
    Check back here for any updates/observations we make as we pile on the kms/miles!
    Update: Pioneer 500 cargo rack is NOT 100 lbs as stated in the video, it is the same as the 520 box at 450 lbs!
    Modifications we have made to the 2021 Honda Pioneer 520 (most were previously mounted on the Pioneer 500) that are seen in some of the clips are: 1.5” wheel spacers which add to the width and ITP 14” steel wheels wrapped in 28x10x14 GBC Kanati Mongrels running around 5 PSI air pressure. Camso X4S tracks (with Pioneer 500 mounting hardware), two side mirrors and a low 'half' windshield.

    Great video!! I've had bigger machines (Rangers and Commanders) but love these smaller 50" wide utes. Love that Honda added a dump box to that smaller chassis that can get thru tighter trails. The price point is great and I'm thinking about adding one of these for deep wood chores and putting the kids to work more often! 😄 Thanks for the review from a new follower!

      Just a heads up, Honda sxs's are tough to find right now. I put deposit on a 2021 700-4 deluxe yesterday with a delivery date of 01JUN21. It was the "next" one coming in(no color choice), to my dealership (Cooperstown, NY). Haven't been able to find any pioneers in stock at any of the local dealerships, most seem to be pre-sold/gone as they come in. Hope this helps, good luck!!

    I really want one for around the farm and for hunting/hauling out game. A lot of the trails I take into the back country are 50" limited and the Pioneer is really the only 50" side by side that has the utility of a nice sized bed. That and legendary Honda durability.

      Glad you enjoyed! Working on a new video (slowly but surely) showcasing the tracks on the 520 and some further thoughts on the 520 after 400 miles or so. No real issues other than some laggy shifting, but it’s gotten much better for sure. It’s great on tracks too! But more so from a utility standpoint, not so much as a ‘rip around’ type of setup. It’s still a ton of fun in the snow tho. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed! In a nut shell, the 500 does so much of what the 520 does just as well. It really comes down to how much you’d use the dump feature on the 520. Personally, the drop tailgate and bed is fantastic for our uses, and we do use the dump feature quite a bit. Mainly for collecting firewood on our trails and then dumping at our splitting pile. Thanks for watching! 👍

    • @jimmyolson7989
      @jimmyolson7989 2 роки тому +1

      Honestly the dump bed I could take it or leave it for what I'd use it for I could just make some kind of wooden box for the back and it would serve me just fine. Have you noticed a big power difference between the 500 and the 520 or are they pretty much the same

    • @ranchroadhomestead
      @ranchroadhomestead  2 роки тому +2

      Ah yeah, the wooden box mod works great on the 500! It’s weird, some days we think there is a slight bump in power, and other days it seems the same. The only time there seems to be a noticeable difference is holding speed on large fairly steep hills on the road in 5th gear going 20 mph+. But I wouldn’t go trade up a 500 to a 520 for that if that makes sense.

    • @jimmyolson7989
      @jimmyolson7989 2 роки тому +1

      That makes sense I was wondering if the extra money would be worth the extra power if there was any. Or atleast a very noticeable difference in power. Thank you for the input and videos looking forward to the 520 update video and for future videos beyond that

    Good info.
    Looked at a Polaris General last weekend. Talk about sticker shock! I’d need a bigger trailer. And 20 mpg?
    Then I started looking at alternatives. This is 1/3 to 1/4 the price. Plain, smaller and less performance. But, it’ll fit in my 5-10 foot trailer, only weighs 1000 lbs and can pull 1000 lbs. nice!
    Thanks for sharing.

    • @ranchroadhomestead
      @ranchroadhomestead  2 роки тому

      Great points you make there. The big machines sure get up there in price. It’s hard to beat the bang for the buck on the ‘entry level’ price point rigs. They do so much that the bigger ones do, but sometimes that compact size is just way more efficient in the real world, and we sell ourselves on the idea that we need some fancy things, performance, etc. but reality and after ownership you can usually forget all that jazz! Thanks for watching 👍

Hard to believe, and I wasn’t there to see it but imagine!? He ran amsoil apparently. Also, many new cars manufacturers are specing synthetic oil only now, which helps fuel economy, but are also specing longer durations between oil changes. That must mean something!

    • @ranchroadhomestead
      @ranchroadhomestead  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed! We haven’t got it ‘stuck’ per se, we have however hit its limits. We were trying to go up a pretty steep incline which also had a slight slope sideways at the same time. It was through an untouched winters worth of snow, which is quite a bit here. I’d say 24”+ of settled accumulation. What happens with no locking diff on the front is that one starts to spin, and the other stops completely. Then the 3 tracks try to push the ‘dead’ track up and over the 24”, so they then just dig down to the ground basically and the machine is sitting on its belly plate by then. Luckily being on a hill we just backed out of the situation pretty effortlessly, and no shovel needed. I’m thinking these thing basically don’t get stuck if you don’t let them get high centered on a stump or lumps of hard packed snow (like from a snow plow etc.) also don’t ask these machines to turn tight! If you do, you could find yourself stuck in really deep stuff. The full time locked rear diff wants to push pioneer straight, which actually reduces traction while turning sharp. Hope this helps! We will definitely try to answer this better in the track review! Thanks for watching

      Happy to help! If you are going through a winters worth of snow, and nobody has packed it or been through, on the flat you can run in second gear and it’s not working hard. So you won’t be flying along by any means. Once you are on a packed trail with say 8-10” fresh snow, 3rd and 4th gear are easy. Haven’t tried 5th yet due to the engine being too new!

    Please give us your impressions on any noticeable power increases with the 520. Since the 500 is actually a 476 I think and the 520 is a 518, the engine is actually 42CC bigger and not the 20CC that the name implies. I have a 19 500 and would like to upgrade, but only if it has enough extra power to justify. Mostly due to the upgrades I've made, like power steering, winch, plow, 2" rear receiver etc. Thanks and I look forward to watching more content from you Guys.

      Our consensus is simply put that the 42cc is not worth upgrading over. The rig empty is 1000+ lbs, add riders and payload and you could be well over 1500 lbs, so noticing the power increase that 42cc’s adds would be hard to notice, and quite frankly we don’t notice it. One could argue that every little bit helps, which is true, but at what cost, and as you’ve said you’re already a bunch of mods into your 500… our one year review vid is about to launch and we go into that in a bit more detail. Thanks for watching, and we will be getting more content out more regularly in the near future. Happy riding 👍

    Any new insight into how you like the new 520....I’ve never owned a Honda or a side by side but I’m thinking about purchasing the 520, how’s the power and you you find there’s enough room for basic work like cutting firewood, or a fishing or hunting trip?

    • @ranchroadhomestead
      @ranchroadhomestead  3 роки тому

      Loving it more every time we hop in! The power is great, the super low 1st gear really grunts things around. I would say the room is subjective to what kind of gear you have, but I’d say the room for gear would be great for many peoples needs! Stay tuned for the camso track review, at the end of the video we will throw in some more findings/updates on the 520. Thanks for watching!

    Just found your channel. Waiting for my 520. What did you think of the tires on the 520. Im up in Northern Minnesota i am hoping there good in snow. I'm 63, getting stuck aint fun anymore. 😄

    • @ranchroadhomestead
      @ranchroadhomestead  3 роки тому

      Awesome, bet you are going to love it! The stock tires on the 520 are pretty impressive considering that they are stock. I would say on packed snow, you won't find much better out there unless you go to a snow specific tire which will be very, very costly! Still, you can't just go anywhere with them. Always make sure you are on your packed base; if you drop a tire off of that, you will be in trouble. Also keep in mind the snow base temperature when driving on packed snow. If it gets close to or above freezing temps, you could suddenly find yourself stuck! Colder is better for snow packed trail/road riding. Unfortunately for deeper snow, the only way you will be able to get around is with a track set. You need the flotation that only tracks can provide. Thanks for watching!

    How do you feel like the noise level is in the cabin? I’m coming from an older sxs (teryx) that was very loud. I don’t expect any sxs to be quiet at wot but would like to be able to have a comfortable conversation with a passenger around 25 mph. What are your thoughts on the noise level in that range?

    • @ranchroadhomestead
      @ranchroadhomestead  3 роки тому +2

      That’s a tricky question! I’d say the noise level is pretty reasonable, a wind deflector would help with wind noise when trying to talk, also an open face helmet is good for that too. The biggest problem with the noise we noticed is with the plastic Honda roof attached. The exhaust/engine sound seems to double in volume. Can still talk mind you but there’s for sure a difference! I’d say if you need a roof and noise is a concern then some sound absorbing material mounted to the underside of the roof would do a lot, or go with a fabric roof if you don’t mind those. Otherwise, open top, it’s pretty reasonable if you aren’t running at high rpms or working it hard up a hill. Hope that helps!

      Thanks for the great comments! Really glad you enjoyed. Dad always taught us to respect our things, they just last longer. Of course some folks love to bash, which is ok if that's their thing, but stuff just doesn't last, or it's in the shop a lot.
      We haven't plowed with the 500 or 520 at all. There are a bunch of people in our area with 4x4 ATV's that do really well with a basic plow and winch setup. We are blown away to see what kind of snow people can move with them, so surely the 500/520 would do even better being heavier than most atv's. We have a snow route and we take care of residential driveways, so we use tractors and snow blowers, so we couldn't really justify spending any money on a plow for the SXS. However, if we did, I tell you, BOSS plows have a really nice hydraulic setup for small UTV/atv's if you need to be angling the blade often. They don't have a listing for the 500/520, but I bet someone could fab some mount adapters. Would be a pricey way to go however. Depends on budget and how much snow area you need to keep open.

    • @ranchroadhomestead
      @ranchroadhomestead  3 роки тому +1

      @@Tailwind1 We went with the deflector style to save a bit on costs and have a simplified setup that if it got smacked by a bad branch etc. it wouldn't brake the bank to replace. Also scuffs and scratches don't matter as much because you aren't looking through the deflector much. It's light weight, and doesn't have moving parts that can come loose while going over rough sections of trail. Of course nothing offers the protection to riders from rain or branches like a full/folding windshield! We considered the Superatv flip up, but decided against it for the above reasons. It sure is impressive for what it is though! I hope this helps you out. Thanks for watching!

      True, Honda doesn't offer much to fully winterize the 500/520 in terms of hard doors/heat etc. They do offer soft doors and soft rear panel to close them in, but that doesn't solve the heat issue/windshield wiper and so on. Honda does offer hard doors/windshield and wiper/heater/roof/rear hard panel for the pioneer 700 and 1000 so you could technically winterize them with Honda accessories, but the price adds up pretty quickly!
