  • After 3 years of ownership of a 2018 Honda Pioneer 500, I try to point out some of the strengths and weaknesses of it compared to the competition.

    I owned a P500 for 5 years and gave it to my son. It had 4000 miles and not one issue. I purchased a 2021 P520 for all the reasons you stated and I chose not to buy a large side by side for all the reasons you stated. I have a 2018 Jeep wrangler rubicon for that kind of riding. Your line of thinking on the p500 was exactly the same as mine except I'm going to keep mine for the weather protection vs a 4 wheeler

      Me too. I have over 9000 miles nrver let me down . I have used Razors that habe let me dpwn in back country. Razor would run for about 1 hour then quit. Let it sit for 10 minutes statt and run for an hour and quit. Not overheating. Polaris dealer could not solve problem. Pioneer is easier to get in and out of than Razor and you sit lower in Razor and get dusty. If you value your life go Pioneer.

    Compliments sir, on an honest and entertaining post. Just had a deal for a 520, swapped in my wee SX Mule. Ordered roof, screen and road legal kit still to be fitted by dealer. I'm 79 now but still going strong. A long way from you here in Scotland. All the best.

    I bought my Pioneer 500 about 3 years ago and I love it. I've added so many mods to it the list would fill a book. I've not drilled one hole or cut anything and much of the stuff was bought on the cheap, like a golf cart windshield, car roof rack for the front, pickup truck tool boxes, or homemade stuff from bits and pieces of things I had or found. Use your imagination for what you want and go for it. The only thing that might be a little bit better is the top-end speed, but I see that the 520 should have helped with that. Get yourself a load of fun.

    Actually prefer my 2017 P500 with flat rack. More versatile for changing out my cargo tool box or larger UMAX “pickup bed” as needed. Power steering and locker mods well worth it. Also have a Polaris 570 for more comfort, but the P500 gears excel on downhill engine braking. No issues on either machine. Agree individual use dictates choice.

    I just bought a p 500 with 9000 klms on it , being a honda it was a no brainer , no belts works for me , i bought it to flip but ive been using it everyday and suits my old dogs better than quad bike , very simple sxs

    Great vid. I just picked up a 520 in camo. Drove 85mi to go pick it up, since it’s still hard finding these units anywhere, and I wanted the camo. Anyway, loud & bumpy ride indeed but using it primarily for utility on our property so I’ll be leaving it mostly stock. Great little machine....and I like watching videos like yours, to see people having fun with these vehicles on the trails. Cheers

    I ended up selling my P500 for $2k more than I paid for it. Bought a new KLR 650 for commuting and weekend rides. Ended up buying a new 2024 Yamaha Kodiak 450 EPS SE ATV this past January and am loving it. I need to do some comparison videos of the new Kodiak.

      I sold it last summer due to having knee surgery and not being able to ride in it since my knees had to be bent so sharply. Sold it for $12k, which is crazy since I paid $10k for it brand new.

    I was torn between the 520 and 1000. The 700 size wise would have been perfect but that 3 speed tranny just didn’t cut it for me. I went with the 3 seater 1000 and it is big for sure but the trails in WV where I live are mostly wide enough for machines this size. Didn’t really need a 1000 cc machine but after having it I’m not mad having the extra power in certain situations

    What law is this you have to have a bucket, shovel, and ax? I have never heard of it.

    • @treyveston7965
      @treyveston7965  Рік тому

      Not really a law, but a requirement on many private timber company lands in order to get a permit for OHV use. Used to be a law with the USFS years ago, but I guess they figured most people in the woods these days would just hurt themselves if they had to have an axe with them, lol.

      @treyveston7965 I'm in Southern Idaho. I've been riding trails on public land since the late 1970's. I had never heard of it.
      Your remark about going back to an ATV is interesting. I sold my yamaha big bear 400 when I got my P500. I kept my Honda Recon. I worry about putting the buggy on its side a lot. During hunting season I've been using the Recon. A guy drives a P500. You Ride an ATV.

      Just bought a low mile Pioneer 500 and wish Montana was OHV trail friendly as Idaho.
      When I was a kid near where this was filmed the law was "Shovel, ax and bucket". Maybe run up the Dredge (Laird Park) and see where it was logged years ago and see that it will not look like the end of the trail you were on. My family worked in the timber industry since the 50's near Potlatch. I haven't been up there in years. Fished brookies up Strychnine and the Metzpa in high school.
