Nice repair! The speaker sounds quieter than expected because by the looks of it it's a dynamic speaker (the one with coil and magnet) whereas "buzzer" implies a piezo speaker. Piezo speakers are a lot louder with the same driving signal (and also a lot more shrill). So, maybe the quieter dynamic speaker is an improvement
I have one of these since I was a kid and can confirm the the buzzer is LOUD. Also, that nixie-tube style display is mesmerizing when used in the darkness.
Defenitely seems like a definite improvement consider it was audible enough to hear through a recording. Can’t imagine the genius that’s tempered with this one before that just cut off the wires and somehow caused a shortage.
I discovered your channel by accident and I love it. I have no experience in fixing electronic devices and I have never touched a soldering iron. It is your personality that brings me back for each new video! Also, I NEVER EVER skip the Patreon Rap!
Almost the same ( i rtry to repair some stuff)But you are right Steve with LGR and the 8bitguy are the kindest youtubers. And i bet they are the same irl. Some youtubers are trying everything to get views but in reality only takes to be a nice person.Very simple.
@@Teaneus you could not be more spot on. I have no doubt that the Steve we see on screen is the same Steve irl. He is just a funny, decent guy who has a gift at making videos.
The fact that the batteries were hot really reminds you how potentially dangerous even something innocuous as this game can be when misassembled! Good job on the repair.
I found you by accident Steve, but, I bloody love this channel, it's fascinating the things that people do to try and fix things and the faults that arise on different devices. I had an orange one of these when I was a wee lad.
Hey Steve, I wanted to thank you for your videos. You have a lovely personality and your videos provide me a certain peace & winding down time and VOS honestly deserves his own Spotify. Haters gonna hate.
I had a version of this game, in a yellow case with square red fire button. The speaker was ridiculously loud. One of my first home fixes (I would have been 10 or 11) was adding an on/off switch for the sound. My parents were eternally grateful!
Steve that rap got a good laugh out of me & the song at the end was the cherry on the top. Keep up the great work dude, your videos make me smile which I think we all need at the moment.
Great job. These old games are great, but I guess we can see why they were discontinued. Nice to have some backup parts to fill in the voids. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Steve, good job as usual. I've also got one of these to repair that I bought a few weeks back, as I've already done videos on the two other models, so I thought I'd complete the series. I've not had a look at this version yet though.
I’m not at all complaining, because I’m literally enthralled with this channel and the work you do on it, but is there any chance there is a multi issue 30+ minute video coming down the pipeline? Again, I’m not complaining. Im a big fan
The speaker you have used is a permanent magnet type, with a fairly low impedance. What would have been there originally is a piezo speaker which has a much higher impedance and won't load the driving electronics down so much - which explains why the sound isn't very loud. I'd recommend swapping that one out for a piezo type or you may damage the driver stage.
Great video once again Steve, keep it up! Question - for someone less experienced with the ins and out of repairing, could you do a video or series where you explain all the common stuff and steps? Would be really healpfull!
I had a very similar version to this, but the case was yellow and the display was red and green, with a blue filter over the score and the shop you operated. I remember my Mum getting my Grandfather to make it quieter. He didn't remove the speaker though. He soldered in a resistor. I remember being really disapointed because the microchip was hidden under the display and that was the bit I was looking forward to seeing most of all when he took it apart.
First time being here on a new release 😁 found your channel less than a week ago. Have gone through a lot of your back videos and have really enjoyed seeing the developments, from just one patreon to a lovely long list done most ingeniously in rap which I love and NEVER skip. Watching you learn and get so much more knowledgeable to Dave and his journey in your channel. I clicked because I was bored and a little bit curious when you came up in my recommended, I stayed for the brilliant humour and great content....I have even learnt stuff I will never get chance to use but wish I could you have made it that interesting. So sorry for the long comment but thank you too 😁😁
I had that game back in the day but in a yellow case. I loved it and played it until the joystick broke and I had no way to fix it. It's lovely to see one again.
Love your channel. You have similar electronics skills, equipment and sense of humor as me. I don't get a lot of things to repair but usually they are not successful. I do have almost every retro CD console packed away in my c!oset (for decades). I shudder to think that all the caps have gone leaky. I'm afraid to look.
It might be a good idea to invest in a lab bench power supply for future repairs. That way you could limit the current to avoid things heating up too much while still being able to see hot spots on a thermal camera. The current limiter also immediately notifies you when something is drawing too much current and can potentially save some components from getting destroyed. This is especially important when using a device that runs on lithium batteries, as those can get quite violent when shorted.
The Invaders - alien beings from a dying planet. Their destination, the Earth Steve's! blue Mat. Their purpose: to make it THEIR world. Steve has seen them. 🤣🖖
My ears did not bleed this time with singing...I must be getting immune...,love your vids though. And well , you seem to remind me of Penfold from Danger Mouse
I’ve been watching your videos for a few weeks now and absolutely love them mate. Massive love for a fellow midlands lad (I think) 😂 big up your bad self 😂
Hi Steve, I’m a big fan of your channel, which is strangely one of the most relaxing out there, let alone perfect for English learning. But I feel frustrated because I know nothing about soldering desoldering cleaning heating etc… techniques you use. So here is my suggestion : you should do some videos for newbies in electronics to learn basic tricks and techniques !! Regards
Yeah, I guess it was since it said buzzer on the board. Not sure how much difference it makes, but this works well now it's all back in the case, the volume is about perfect. 👍
Gets the repair done in 10 mins… spends hours (I’m guessing) making us a sweet rap and an outro song. I love this guy.
Does anyone else go look on eBay for broken electronic stuff after watching this? Love the channel, keep up the good work!
Yes, I've fixed quite a few things like this recently.
Given how huge it is,, I'd say definite improvement if you care about your ears lol
I have one of these since I was a kid and can confirm the the buzzer is LOUD.
Also, that nixie-tube style display is mesmerizing when used in the darkness.
From the size of it it looks like a Gameboy speaker would fit in there perfectly.
Defenitely seems like a definite improvement consider it was audible enough to hear through a recording. Can’t imagine the genius that’s tempered with this one before that just cut off the wires and somehow caused a shortage.

I've just repaired the "orange" one. It's an invader 10,000. I've done the yellow one (1,000) too.
I fully respect your right to rap in your own video, and I thank you profusely for giving a timestamp to its end.
never mind the complaints of others..just be yourself Steven! And sing your heart out. We are looking forward to the next video 💪🏻☺️👌🏻

If I remember correctly those game units used piezo speaker the sort of thing you find in cheap tweeters.
Yeah I think you're right. It seems to work well with the little speaker, maybe the piezo would be a bit louder.

Steve....You da man 😃
The patreon rap makes me want to sign up to patreon and give you my money, I do no skip.

Good fix although more visual smoke next time please. 🤣
Non-patreon rap skipping gang. It's amateur-ish, but fun, I like them, they are creative.
Think it's a wee flat mount piezzo you need rather than a speaker
