100% agreed! If his videos inspire anyone to get into the business, they won't have inflated expectations for what is and isn't fixable because he uploads them regardless.

Well he does profit off of that unique form of entertainment, so I think the market definitely has a place for people like TechRax. That being said, it would be nice if he sold the parts on eBay afterward so that it didn't just go into a landfill.
I get the sentiment but in reality destroying a few items for views is nothing compared to how much is junked because the manufacturers won't let us buy parts. I'm not sure if you saw TronicsFix's other video where he is stacking PS4's but that is just a drop in the bucket for how much waste there is in the electronics industry. So yeah destroying stuff that work for views isn't ideal but it just pales in comparison with the waste manufacturers are building directly into their products by not allowing them to be fixed.

Steve, never ever short the high voltage caps. The discharge spark will be powerful, may cause harm to the person, will harm the capacitor and the pliers for sure. Better use a 5KΩ resistor rates 5watts or higher to discharge them. Safer method for everyone. In most cases however, there is a "bleeding" resistor in parallel with the caps that discharges them when unplugged. Dunno if this applies to the ps5, and for safety reasons we must assume the is not one, till proven therwise. Better measure with a multimeter in DC mode and discharge if needed. Cheers.
I've seen people discharge CRTs with a screwdriver and were fine. It's fine for the human as long as you're isolated. Is it bad for the caps? Myabe, but I've never seen a cap damaged from this.
@@awilliams1701 for crts it's considered non optimal but safe practice to discharge the tube with a long electrician graded screwdriver connected to ground with a wire,. The teacher i had on a technician electronics course shorted both leads of a mains charged eletrolytic capacitor with a coin on the first class about capacitors, if it was dangerous to him i'm sure he wouldn't do it in front of the class and also ask other students if they also wanted to do it, but that's a story you have to take my word for it. The point is, the excess of electrons from one lead just wants to go to the lack of electrons on the other lead and obviously they will take the path of less resistance, and the reason you see a big spark is because the capacitor let's everything out at once, so if you don't use your finger as the "jumper" you shouldn't get shocked. I'm NOT by any means telling anyone to do the same thing and not be worried about big eletrolytic capacitors but discharging them the way Steve did is not that dangerous, i also don't like the spark so i do prefer and also recommend using a resistor to discharge a mains eletrolytic capacitor.

Glad you are repurposing these parts. Breaking a good console is kind of upsetting honestly but at least parts are going to be used from it to fix other broken ps5s
I always use a power strip with a power button when connecting an unknown device that doesn’t include a switch on the power supply just in case I need to cut power immediately. Hard lessons learned… lol
Wouldn't it have been a good idea to chech the resistance on the power connector before powering on the board? Then maybe taking a dremel and trying to grind away the board to see where the layers were shorting would have been far more interesting to see than seeing the magic smoke come out of it :)
Hi TronicsFix 6:31 Obviously this has not been powered up for a long time, but discharging high voltage capacitors with a pair of long nose pliers or a screwdriver really isn't a very good idea. It's very bad for the capacitors as the sudden high discharge current is also flowing through the dielectric, it's bad for your tools, and the resulting discharge spark can cause injury (tiny hot fragments of metal in the eye for example) First check for charge with a multimeter, and if there is a high voltage present then use a power resistor 2.7K-3.3K 5W to discharge them. But I'm sure you already know that really. 😉 6:40 I actually teach people to repair power supplies, amongst other things, on YT. If no one taught how to do it then how could anyone become a professional at it? The PSU is repairable IMHO - these are double sided boards with no internal layers so even one that is snapped in half can be fixed. As the broken area is where the larger power components are mounted and not small SMD components it should be fairly easy to fix it. The broken resistor is probably a current sense resistor, I'd have to reverse engineer that area to work it out for certain. Can I be cheeky please and ask if I can have the PSU for free (I could pay postage of course) to attempt a repair on it? it would be an interesting video and much appreciated - I'll give you a shout of course 😁
You did indeed short the layers. I imagine the PS5 has a ground and positive 5v layer at the very least. What you should have initially done is cut the area clean away that was broken with a dremel cutter so that none of the layers touched and then powered on. It may well have worked with minor surgery after that, as it didnt look there were any important traces there other than power and ground.
You know what I love about watching TronicsFix? How down the middle honest and genuine he is. Most UA-camrs if they couldn't fix it as was the case here wouldn't even release the video but even with the PS5 being unfixable this was still really enjoyable to watch.

YAY TECHRAX COLLAB! Try to fix one of his* lava melted phones 😅
Ha, ha, I'm not sure that would be even worth me trying.
On the bright side, at least you now have a handful of essentially brand new capacitors!
Wouldn't it have been a good idea to chech the resistance on the power connector before powering on the board? Then maybe taking a dremel and trying to grind away the board to see where the layers were shorting would have been far more interesting to see than seeing the magic smoke come out of it :)
ive always wanted to see a video like this
More of these videos please. So good idea to fix influences’ device demise 😂
I'd love to do more of these.
Hi TronicsFix
6:31 Obviously this has not been powered up for a long time, but discharging high voltage capacitors with a pair of long nose pliers or a screwdriver really isn't a very good idea. 😉
6:40 I actually teach people to repair power supplies, amongst other things, on YT.
This video deserves a million views
Tronics Friday!!😎
9:15 Famous last words lol
Although not fixed, the revision center CFI-1116B showed visible changes to the disadvantage
A crossover no one saw coming. 😂😂
