Thank you so much for this video. You explained how to open the pool using vocabulary that can be understood by normal people. I have an 18’ round also. Knowing that I’ll need 10 gallons, at least of liquid chlorine really helps. I can get it tomorrow. I’m supposed to have my liner replaced. I called in late February hoping I’d be first on the list. It’s June 11 and no new liner. I gorilla taped all the holes and am filling the pool now. AAARRRRGGGHHHH!

Love it, three things. On the filter you should remove the bottom cap during the winter in climates where it freezes. Two, when you put the hose in the pool you can scratch the liner, just wrap some duct tape over the end or slide a piece of pool noodle over it. And third, something is wrong with your dogs front left leg.
Shalom Shalom, I am now subcribed to your channel and I will be using this video for the opening of my pool for next season. I am using it now because my pool has a little algae in it. I have a 14fft x 42in round Funsicle Pool, so I know I won't need that much chlorine and shock. You mentioned backwashing......I have the pump that the pool came with, I just purchased the pool a few weeks ago, so how do I back wash or do I just clean and rinse the filter lol???
Backwashing is only for sand filters. If you have a cartridge type filter, then all you do is clean and rinse those filters like you mentioned. I’ll share it here because maybe someone else has this same issue…My pool was very cloudy yesterday, I think I may have used too much chlorine and muriatic acid (which I used them a day apart), my pool water was cloudy yesterday so around 7:20pm I used a cup of flocculant and let the pool run for 2 hours and then cut it off, I woke up the pool was a tad bit clearer where I could see the bottom, but instead of black stuff at the bottom of the pool, I saw a white chalky substance. I drained the pool part way. Should I fill it back up and shock the pool to get ride of the white substance or what?
Can you please tell me exactly what you used for products. I have algae in my pool and can’t get rid of it. First time pool owner. It was fine until I wasn’t feeling well for several days and didn’t get out to check chlorine levels. 😩 My pool is 12’X22’ oval, a little over 6000 gallons. I actually explain in the video how to get rid of algae and the philosophy behind it. Only one chemical is needed to get rid of algae... and that chemical is chlorine..... and LOTS of it. I got my 1st pool I was so confused went to wal mart and bought unessasary things I got it used and it sat all wi ter until today then I put it up uts a above ground style with the metal poles for support but it had tons of build up on t he sides and bottom I pressure washed 1stnthen I installed the poles and filled it up I thought well i t is off level so I used bricks to level one side then filled it 3/4 of the way up luckily noticed were I used the bricks the liner was wrapping g around them with a tons of force were it would of definitely busred if I didn't drain and level the ground properly so I'm still draining as of now but tomorrow ill get sand and level and restart but watching this video made me alot more comfortable of what I need to do I need I get it setup and how the filters actually work it was 1 of the easiest steps to follow I feel like a expert after this 1 video Ps I no im Not lol 😅 but yea thx for the good info...

Should I just pump the water off the pool cover to prevent all that algae from getting in the pool. That's why i covered it this year , I am new to this , if I am work let me know
You can definitely do that. I did that for my first 3 years owning my pool. Omg. What a hassle that was. Even after pumping the nasty water off my regular cover as best I could, I still always ended up with crap falling into my clean water when trying to remove the cover. So I switched to a mesh cover and have been doing it this way for the last 5 years. For me, this way is far easier for one person and easy to do. Good luck with whatever method you decide on.
I have been looking for a video to help me with this process and have yet to find one, and now thankfully I stumbled across this one and I’m so thankful! @sarahbrown1382 Hi Sarah! If your pool is hard sided with a liner, then I agree that draining and refilling is not a good idea. However it can be done. I did it my first time opening my pool and had positive results. The key is to do it in such a way that you don't "dry out" your liner in the process. I've never drained my pool anymore after that first year because I know exactly what I'm doing now. Good luck! 😊😊😁😁
Im sorry, i gotta say if you just siphoned off the green water on the cover with a "mighty pump" or the hose you use to vacuum the bottom of the pool can move 90% of the water off and pull the cover to the edge creating a bag of the water that is left, pulling slowly side to side it spills off no problem.
I do use my submersible pump from my water fountain to remove excessive algee off the pool tarp. I must replace my pool with clean water. I leave 2.5 ft of water in my above ground pool during winter months. I drain the 2.5 ft water because it still gets dirty. Winterizing: I have a protective covering on the following. Clean and protect skimmer and its attached hose inside the pool only disconnect from filtration system and all exposed orfices are protected; use the same steps for the return attached; all smaller attachments are cleaned and placed in a waterproof bag all together in an airtight drum with other pool attachments; filter and pool pump are well covered with linning tarp. I open pool in the summe. Attached each hose to their appropiate valves. I fill my pool in 48 hours or use 2 hoses pool will fill within 26 hours. Check for leaks during pool prime stage. Water bill is $70.00.

I use a Hayward 1.5 hp pool pump and my sand filter holds 175 lbs of sand. Yeah, it's a big sand filter but it gets the job done in spades. Glad my videos have helped you. Happy swimming!!
The dead algae bogged down my sand to where it wouldn't backwash. I had to change out my sand. Wouldn't it be better just to recirculate the chlorinated water until most of the algae is depleted, then switch to filter?
I'm sorry to hear that. I've never had dead algae bog down my sand filter before as backwashing always washes away any dead algae trapped in the sand filter. That's what I want. I want the backwash to remove the algae from the pool. Using recirculate will not remove any dead algae, but it is great for circulating chemicals in your pool. Hope that helps. Good luck!!
@heather. Maybe you should brush the pool to agitate the algae, recirculate pool for a few hours to mix chemicals, then use the filter function. You might have to backwash more often. (I am not a pro)
I do not. I am a full time professional DJ, however I can say that I did do this for people during covid to make extra money though. I admit that I am not an expert in the field of pool maintenance. I am just sharing what I have learned from owning my own pool for 8 years. Also, it is not as hard as some people want you to believe. Just don't over complicate it. Good luck!
Our pool is 30” diameter and I think close to 30,000 gallon. We did 14 or 16 bottles of chlorine and are on our third day. It’s a lot lighter but still not clear. How many days do you think it will take?
I say that was not nearly enough chlorine for that size of a pool. 25 gallons would have been more in the ball park if you ask me. So what's happening is you put just enough chlorine in there to kill "some" of the algae, but not all. Now the remaining algae is gonna reproduce and your pool is gonna get worse in time. You must OVERWHELM the algae all at once. Add more chlorine! I suggest adding another 15 gallons immediately. It's best to err on the side of too much chlorine than not enough. Good luck!
No. This is for opening a green pool during the heat of summer. A new pool will not be green, therefore you will have a much easier time opening it. Just fill it with water, test the PH and alkalinity and adjust as needed. Then add some chlorine tabs and you're done.
DJ great job, I have inground pebble tech pool and my son doesn't keep up with the chemicals and now it's green :( at my son. Does this method work the same for my inground pool?
For what it's worth good brother the video was not bad at all like you said at the end of the video the only mistake for real was how you started with the pool cover me personally would have got the water and the leaf debris off that pool cover before I even opened it about 90% of that would have been cleared firsthand but you still didn't do bad because personally my opinion is you could have had that pool ready on that third day to swim in it if you would have put that blue liquid in there called clarifier what that does is that cloudy look it binds it together make it thicker and easier for your skimmer to suck that out or drop it to the floor where you can vacuum it so basically that cloudy look would bond together and fall harmlessly to the pool floor and all you had to do was vacuum it you could have been swimming on that third day if you start early enough but you did a great job brother hope you are enjoying your pool I just opened mine yesterday evening before the sunset to give my chlorine time to work without being diminished by the sunlight so I'm sure I got some vacuuming and backwashing to do today keep up the good work and thanks for the video 👏👍😎

Do you need to manually refill the sand pump with water for the new season or once the pool is filled, the water will circulate and fill the sand housing?

Thanks!! Just find out the dimensions of the pool. For example, mine is 18 feet round and 52 inches deep. All I did was google those measurements and asked google how many gallons of water does a pool that size hold? It's that easy. Good luck with your new pool!

We went by the pool company yesterday and got 50 lb bag of calcium chloride and added half yesterday and another half this morning, as they suggested. There's been hardly any change.
That is a huge pool. Much much larger than my 18 footer. Here's what I recommend. Test the PH and alkalinity. Add correct chemicals to bring those 2 in line. Then add the proper amount of algaecide for your size pool. Make sure there are no leaves and debris on the bottom of your pool. Then add 3 times the amount of shock or chlorine that you would normally add. That should clear your pool up in 24 hours. I'm gonna post a video here for you to watch. This video helped me tremendously 7 years ago and I have not have any problems since.
I have a 15-round above ground sand filter swimming pool. How many gallons of chlorine do I need? I've already scrubbed all the algae off the bottom and everything and scooped up all the debris before I put anything in it, and now my pool looks like Mountain Dew green. I have used algaecide clarifier, Algae Guard advance, algaecide. Is it okay to still do the chlorine thing? I saved your video to favorites so I can always have this to look back on every year. My pool is almost 3 years old and I use the same cover as you do but I clean the cover off before I take it off the pool.
Since your pool is a light green color make sure the PH and alkalinity is balanced and then add about 6 gallons of chlorine to it, but be prepared to add more if you don't see results in a day. I'd rather err on the side of too much chlorine than not enough.
Yes, for the most part, chlorine and shock are the same. Shock is just a higher more concentrated dose of chlorine. No, I will never need a new sand filter. I may need a new pump one day if mine ever breaks but so far it's been rock solid for 8 years.

We have been dealing with algae (green pool water) and have spent a ton of money already trying to clear it. We came across your video and we have our fingers crossed it works. We have a 24 round, 14 000 gallon pool. Yesterday morning my husband took your advice and we dumped a ton of chlorine. We used 12 bottles. In your opinion, do you think we need more? Waking up this morning, the pool still looks the same (swamp green). I hope it just needs more time. The filter ran all day and night and a ton of back washing too. We are ready to dump this water out and just refill it if this doesn't work 🤦🏻♀️ any help would be great!! TIA
12 gallons was not nearly enough for a large pool like you have. 20 gallons would have been closer in the ballpark. You must OVERWHELM the algae all at once. Not in several doses, but all at once. The algae in your pool just ate that chlorine for dinner. You could drain the pool. That's always a last resort. Also make sure there are no leaves or debris on the bottom of the pool. That's very important. Leaves and debris on the pool floor will eat up the chlorine fast. I wish you all the best with your pool.
I learned this from professional pool companies. If you hire a professional pool company to clear up your pool, they are gonna do 2 things: 1. Clear the leaves and debris off the pool floor. 2. Overwhelm the algae with a TON of chlorine all at once. That's the key. Algae CANNOT survive when smothered in chlorine just like fire cannot survive smothered in water. Good luck to you both.

My husband actually decided to stick with your method and we ended up buying 25 bottles of chlorine and added it yesterday at noon and this morning our pool is no longer green! Its blue! BUT cloudy which I am sure is expected. We did notice a cloudy slight green ring still in the middle, but it hasn't been 24 hours yet so we will see. But thank you a million! Truly! In your opinion should we add another bottle of chlorine today or tomorrow, or just leave what we have done? I will definitely keep you posted and continue to support your channel. I get asked this question a lot. Unfortunately, the steps came with the pool when I bought it new in 2017. I don't know where to buy these steps separately. Sorry.
Make sure your PH and alkalinity are in line, then make sure your chlorine levels are good. Then slowly vacuum the algae off the pool floor. This may take several consistent days of vacuuming to finally get rid of it.
Hey how are you Vince I’m so glad I saw this. Very informative. May I ask, should I use 10 gallons of chlorine also for a 15’ above ground or less. Or will it hurt the pool if I still use ten regardless? Also maybe I should use less since I do not have a sand filter. I have a spark cartridge filter.
I always say it is better to err on the side of too much chlorine than not enough. I really don't have much experience with cartridge filters but I do think that if your pool is plagued with a lot of green algae then yes, 10 gallons of chlorine will not hurt your 15 foot round pool. Good luck!!
Many reasons. First, it's not a tarp. It's a mesh cover so it's incapable of holding any gunky water on top of it. There was a little bit of debris on it, but no water because it's mesh and water seeps through. Second, my first 3 years of owning my pool, I did use a regular tarp type of cover and I used a sump pump to siphon as much water off it as possible and found that to be extremely inefficient and gunky water always ended up in my pool when trying to remove the cover. I just really hated that method. Since I switched to a mesh cover, opening my pool is so much easier to me. I much prefer doing it this way than the other way. I do have a sump pump for sale if you'd like to buy it. Good day to you.
@DJ2Legit007 My apologies, didn't appear to be a mesh covering to me as it appeared that thick, gunky algae filled runoff occurred as you pulled the covering over the edge of the pool.
Filtration is the same as filter, correct. Some of my lettering on the top is missing. We are using eight full gallons of the chlorine pool shock for a 18,000 gallon pool.
Filtration system and filter system are the same, correct. 18,000 gallon pool? 8 gallons of chlorine is not enough, imo. My pool has about 9000 gallons of water. So be prepared to use more chlorine if that doesn't work.
Question, I drain my pool pretty low because we live in a cold climate. Do I need to do anything special with my sand filter, or just fill the pool and it will fill as well?
Just drain the sand filter by removing the cap on the bottom. When you refill the pool, the sand filter will automatically refill itself once you start circulating the water with the pump.
So I did the 10 gallon method..Worked for killing the green but left it cloudy...I started by scooping the floating crap out then scrubbed the heck out of it..Then I messed up and added a crap to of chlorine on the recirculate mode at night. Then found out I had to add flock drop with the chlorine at the same time..did that the next night and most of the crap dropped to the bottom..The next day I did a quick vacuum on waste because my pump is powerful lol its pretty clear now I can see the bottom..still got a bit of fog but it's doable lol
Good job!! Yes, if your pool becomes cloudy and it's not a chemical imbalance issue, then using flock overnight and vacuuming will clear that right up.
Yep, that's correct. I used to use shock when I was following the advice from my pool store. So glad I see now that shock is just a waste of money. Straight chlorine is all I need.

Yes, that's a huge pool and you must add all at once because you have to overwhelm the algae and not give it a chance to recover. Since yours is light green, you're almost there. Also check your PH and alkalinity. Good luck!

That is the worst way to open up a pool. I always use a pump a remove all that dirty water out. Than remove the cover and my pool water is pretty much clean, just a little adjustment.
Maybe it's not a good way for you, but I've found this to be the best way for me. I did it your way for my 1st 3 years owning my pool and that way was an extreme headache for me. So glad I do it this way now.

I’m supposed to have my liner replaced. I called in late February hoping I’d be first on the list. It’s June 11 and no new liner. I gorilla taped all the holes and am filling the pool now. AAARRRRGGGHHHH!

Love it, three things. On the filter you should remove the bottom cap during the winter in climates where it freezes. Two, when you put the hose in the pool you can scratch the liner, just wrap some duct tape over the end or slide a piece of pool noodle over it. And third, something is wrong with your dogs front left leg.

Shalom Shalom, I am now subcribed to your channel and I will be using this video for the opening of my pool for next season. I am using it now because my pool has a little algae in it. I have a 14fft x 42in round Funsicle Pool, so I know I won't need that much chlorine and shock. You mentioned backwashing......I have the pump that the pool came with, I just purchased the pool a few weeks ago, so how do I back wash or do I just clean and rinse the filter lol???
Backwashing is only for sand filters. If you have a cartridge type filter, then all you do is clean and rinse those filters like you mentioned. I’ll share it here because maybe someone else has this same issue…My pool was very cloudy yesterday, I think I may have used too much chlorine and muriatic acid (which I used them a day apart), my pool water was cloudy yesterday so around 7:20pm I used a cup of flocculant and let the pool run for 2 hours and then cut it off, I woke up the pool was a tad bit clearer where I could see the bottom, but instead of black stuff at the bottom of the pool, I saw a white chalky substance. I drained the pool part way. Should I fill it back up and shock the pool to get ride of the white substance or what?

It was fine until I wasn’t feeling well for several days and didn’t get out to check chlorine levels. 😩 My pool is 12’X22’ oval, a little over 6000 gallons. I got my 1st pool I was so confused went to wal mart and bought unessasary things I got it used and it sat all wi ter until today then I put it up uts a above ground style with the metal poles for support but it had tons of build up on t he sides and bottom I pressure washed 1stnthen I installed the poles and filled it up I thought well i t is off level so I used bricks to level one side then filled it 3/4 of the way up luckily noticed were I used the bricks the liner was wrapping g around them with a tons of force were it would of definitely busred if I didn't drain and level the ground properly so I'm still draining as of now but tomorrow ill get sand and level and restart but watching this video made me alot more comfortable of what I need to do I need I get it setup and how the filters actually work it was 1 of the easiest steps to follow I feel like a expert after this 1 video

Should I just pump the water off the pool cover to prevent all that algae from getting in the pool. That's why i covered it this year , I am new to this , if I am work let me know
You can definitely do that. I did that for my first 3 years owning my pool. Omg. What a hassle that was. Even after pumping the nasty water off my regular cover as best I could, I still always ended up with crap falling into my clean water when trying to remove the cover. So I switched to a mesh cover and have been doing it this way for the last 5 years. For me, this way is far easier for one person and easy to do. Good luck with whatever method you decide on.

@sarahbrown1382 Hi Sarah! If your pool is hard sided with a liner, then I agree that draining and refilling is not a good idea. However it can be done. I did it my first time opening my pool and had positive results. The key is to do it in such a way that you don't "dry out" your liner in the process. I've never drained my pool anymore after that first year because I know exactly what I'm doing now. Good luck! 😊😊😁😁

Im sorry, i gotta say if you just siphoned off the green water on the cover with a "mighty pump" or the hose you use to vacuum the bottom of the pool can move 90% of the water off and pull the cover to the edge creating a bag of the water that is left, pulling slowly side to side it spills off no problem.

I do use my submersible pump from my water fountain to remove excessive algee off the pool tarp. I must replace my pool with clean water. I leave 2.5 ft of water in my above ground pool during winter months. I drain the 2.5 ft water because it still gets dirty.
Winterizing: I have a protective covering on the following. Clean and protect skimmer and its attached hose inside the pool only disconnect from filtration system and all exposed orfices are protected; use the same steps for the return attached; all smaller attachments are cleaned and placed in a waterproof bag all together in an airtight drum with other pool attachments; filter and pool pump are well covered with linning tarp.
I open pool in the summe. Attached each hose to their appropiate valves. I fill my pool in 48 hours or use 2 hoses pool will fill within 26 hours. Check for leaks during pool prime stage.
Water bill is $70.00.
He does it because he found a way that works for him. My pool would have been a mess if I tried it. Last summer was my first year and I looked at so many videos. Im looking early for next year 😅@craighudson4382

I use a Hayward 1.5 hp pool pump and my sand filter holds 175 lbs of sand. Yeah, it's a big sand filter but it gets the job done in spades. Glad my videos have helped you. Happy swimming!!

The dead algae bogged down my sand to where it wouldn't backwash. I had to change out my sand. Wouldn't it be better just to recirculate the chlorinated water until most of the algae is depleted, then switch to filter?
I'm sorry to hear that. I've never had dead algae bog down my sand filter before as backwashing always washes away any dead algae trapped in the sand filter. That's what I want. I want the backwash to remove the algae from the pool. Using recirculate will not remove any dead algae, but it is great for circulating chemicals in your pool. Hope that helps. Good luck!!
@heather. Maybe you should brush the pool to agitate the algae, recirculate pool for a few hours to mix chemicals, then use the filter function. You might have to backwash more often. (I am not a pro)

I do not. I am a full time professional DJ, however I can say that I did do this for people during covid to make extra money though. I admit that I am not an expert in the field of pool maintenance. I am just sharing what I have learned from owning my own pool for 8 years. Also, it is not as hard as some people want you to believe. Just don't over complicate it. Good luck!

Our pool is 30” diameter and I think close to 30,000 gallon. We did 14 or 16 bottles of chlorine and are on our third day. It’s a lot lighter but still not clear. How many days do you think it will take?
I say that was not nearly enough chlorine for that size of a pool. 25 gallons would have been more in the ball park if you ask me. So what's happening is you put just enough chlorine in there to kill "some" of the algae, but not all. Now the remaining algae is gonna reproduce and your pool is gonna get worse in time. You must OVERWHELM the algae all at once. Add more chlorine! I suggest adding another 15 gallons immediately. It's best to err on the side of too much chlorine than not enough. Good luck!

To set up a first time pool same steps?
No. This is for opening a green pool during the heat of summer. A new pool will not be green, therefore you will have a much easier time opening it. Just fill it with water, test the PH and alkalinity and adjust as needed. Then add some chlorine tabs and you're done.

For what it's worth good brother the video was not bad at all like you said at the end of the video the only mistake for real was how you started with the pool cover me personally would have got the water and the leaf debris off that pool cover before I even opened it about 90% of that would have been cleared firsthand but you still didn't do bad because personally my opinion is you could have had that pool ready on that third day to swim in it if you would have put that blue liquid in there called clarifier what that does is that cloudy look it binds it together make it thicker and easier for your skimmer to suck that out or drop it to the floor where you can vacuum it so basically that cloudy look would bond together and fall harmlessly to the pool floor and all you had to do was vacuum it you could have been swimming on that third day if you start early enough but you did a great job brother hope you are enjoying your pool I just opened mine yesterday evening before the sunset to give my chlorine time to work without being diminished by the sunlight so I'm sure I got some vacuuming and backwashing to do today keep up the good work and thanks for the video 👏👍😎

Do you need to manually refill the sand pump with water for the new season or once the pool is filled, the water will circulate and fill the sand housing?
Once the pool is filled, the water automatically refills the sand filter. I don't have to do anything extra.
Hello I just watched your video and would like to know how to get my psi level down to 10.. I backwash until clear and rinse it goes down only a few notches then a few mins later it's back up to 20 which is too high.. do you know what I can do?

Hello I love your videos they are really easy to follow i am really new at pools I do have a question I am buying a home that has a above ground pool and it look almost identical to yours how can you find out how many gallons of water the pool is so I can figure out how much of the liquid stuff to buy?
Thanks!! Just find out the dimensions of the pool. For example, mine is 18 feet round and 52 inches deep. All I did was google those measurements and asked google how many gallons of water does a pool that size hold? It's that easy. Good luck with your new pool!

Can pumping the pool with a handheld or automatic filter speed up the process of cleaning the pool? To understand better, youre just letting the pools built in filter do the job instead?
Not really sure I understand the question, but yes I let my filter pump do the majority of the work.

We have a 27 foot pool and are struggling with algae this year. I ordered 15 gal of pool chlorine, but would like to know what brand and how many gallons you suggest for us? Thank you so much for explaining this so well!
We went by the pool company yesterday and got 50 lb bag of calcium chloride and added half yesterday and another half this morning, as they suggested. There's been hardly any change.
That is a huge pool. Much much larger than my 18 footer. Here's what I recommend. Test the PH and alkalinity. Add correct chemicals to bring those 2 in line. Then add the proper amount of algaecide for your size pool. Make sure there are no leaves and debris on the bottom of your pool. Then add 3 times the amount of shock or chlorine that you would normally add. That should clear your pool up in 24 hours. I'm gonna post a video here for you to watch. This video helped me tremendously 7 years ago and I have not have any problems since.

I have a 15-round above ground sand filter swimming pool. How many gallons of chlorine do I need? I've already scrubbed all the algae off the bottom and everything and scooped up all the debris before I put anything in it, and now my pool looks like Mountain Dew green. I have used algaecide clarifier, Algae Guard advance, algaecide. Is it okay to still do the chlorine thing? I saved your video to favorites so I can always have this to look back on every year. My pool is almost 3 years old and I use the same cover as you do but I clean the cover off before I take it off the pool.
Since your pool is a light green color make sure the PH and alkalinity is balanced and then add about 6 gallons of chlorine to it, but be prepared to add more if you don't see results in a day. I'd rather err on the side of too much chlorine than not enough.

Yes, for the most part, chlorine and shock are the same. Shock is just a higher more concentrated dose of chlorine. No, I will never need a new sand filter. I may need a new pump one day if mine ever breaks but so far it's been rock solid for 8 years.

Frist time pool owners, opened our pool almost two weeks ago. We have been dealing with algae (green pool water) and have spent a ton of money already trying to clear it. We came across your video and we have our fingers crossed it works.
We have a 24 round, 14 000 gallon pool. Yesterday morning my husband took your advice and we dumped a ton of chlorine. We used 12 bottles. In your opinion, do you think we need more? Waking up this morning, the pool still looks the same (swamp green). I hope it just needs more time. The filter ran all day and night and a ton of back washing too.
We are ready to dump this water out and just refill it if this doesn't work 🤦🏻♀️ any help would be great!!

12 gallons was not nearly enough for a large pool like you have. 20 gallons would have been closer in the ballpark. You must OVERWHELM the algae all at once. Not in several doses, but all at once. The algae in your pool just ate that chlorine for dinner. You could drain the pool. That's always a last resort. Also make sure there are no leaves or debris on the bottom of the pool. That's very important. Leaves and debris on the pool floor will eat up the chlorine fast. I wish you all the best with your pool.
I learned this from professional pool companies. If you hire a professional pool company to clear up your pool, they are gonna do 2 things:
1. Clear the leaves and debris off the pool floor.
2. Overwhelm the algae with a TON of chlorine all at once.
That's the key. Algae CANNOT survive when smothered in chlorine just like fire cannot survive smothered in water. Good luck to you both.

My husband actually decided to stick with your method and we ended up buying 25 bottles of chlorine and added it yesterday at noon and this morning our pool is no longer green! Its blue! BUT cloudy which I am sure is expected. We did notice a cloudy slight green ring still in the middle, but it hasn't been 24 hours yet so we will see. But thank you a million! Truly! Where did you get your pool steps
I get asked this question a lot. Unfortunately, the steps came with the pool when I bought it new in 2017. I don't know where to buy these steps separately. Sorry.
Once you’ve killed all the algae but you see it trying to come back a month later what should you do?
Make sure your PH and alkalinity are in line, then make sure your chlorine levels are good. Then slowly vacuum the algae off the pool floor. This may take several consistent days of vacuuming to finally get rid of it.
Where I can buy that stair for the pool?
These stairs came with my pool when I purchased it new in 2017. So I'm not really sure where they sell them today.

Hey how are you Vince I’m so glad I saw this. Very informative. May I ask, should I use 10 gallons of chlorine also for a 15’ above ground or less. Or will it hurt the pool if I still use ten regardless? Also maybe I should use less since I do not have a sand filter. I have a spark cartridge filter.
I always say it is better to err on the side of too much chlorine than not enough. I really don't have much experience with cartridge filters but I do think that if your pool is plagued with a lot of green algae then yes, 10 gallons of chlorine will not hurt your 15 foot round pool. Good luck!!
Why didnt use a sump pump to siphon off that gunky water off the tarp instead of dumping it in your pool??
Many reasons. First, it's not a tarp. It's a mesh cover so it's incapable of holding any gunky water on top of it. There was a little bit of debris on it, but no water because it's mesh and water seeps through.
Second, my first 3 years of owning my pool, I did use a regular tarp type of cover and I used a sump pump to siphon as much water off it as possible and found that to be extremely inefficient and gunky water always ended up in my pool when trying to remove the cover. I just really hated that method. Since I switched to a mesh cover, opening my pool is so much easier to me. I much prefer doing it this way than the other way. I do have a sump pump for sale if you'd like to buy it. Good day to you.
@DJ2Legit007 My apologies, didn't appear to be a mesh covering to me as it appeared that thick, gunky algae filled runoff occurred as you pulled the covering over the edge of the pool.

In the beginning yes. After the pool is open, I only run it 10 hours a day.
Filtration is the same as filter, correct. Some of my lettering on the top is missing. We are using eight full gallons of the chlorine pool shock for a 18,000 gallon pool.
Filtration system and filter system are the same, correct. 18,000 gallon pool? 8 gallons of chlorine is not enough, imo. My pool has about 9000 gallons of water. So be prepared to use more chlorine if that doesn't work.
Question, I drain my pool pretty low because we live in a cold climate. Do I need to do anything special with my sand filter, or just fill the pool and it will fill as well?

Just drain the sand filter by removing the cap on the bottom. When you refill the pool, the sand filter will automatically refill itself once you start circulating the water with the pump.

So I did the 10 gallon method..Worked for killing the green but left it cloudy...I started by scooping the floating crap out then scrubbed the heck out of it..Then I messed up and added a crap to of chlorine on the recirculate mode at night. Then found out I had to add flock drop with the chlorine at the same time..did that the next night and most of the crap dropped to the bottom..The next day I did a quick vacuum on waste because my pump is powerful lol its pretty clear now I can see the bottom..still got a bit of fog but it's doable lol
Good job!! Yes, if your pool becomes cloudy and it's not a chemical imbalance issue, then using flock overnight and vacuuming will clear that right up.

Yep, that's correct. I used to use shock when I was following the advice from my pool store. So glad I see now that shock is just a waste of money. Straight chlorine is all I need.

That is the worst way to open up a pool.
I always use a pump a remove all that dirty water out.
Than remove the cover and my pool water is pretty much clean, just a little adjustment.
Maybe it's not a good way for you, but I've found this to be the best way for me. I did it your way for my 1st 3 years owning my pool and that way was an extreme headache for me. So glad I do it this way now.
