Mass Effect is far from the first RPG to do something like this, but take a moment to appreciate that the standard issue military equipment Shepard starts the game with is of worse quality than loot you find on random corspes. "Sorry Shepard, due to budget cuts, the Alliance can only afford to issue you armor with obvious weak points and weapons that are missing parts." "That's okay, sir. I've put extra points into my Intimidation."
@@JBWinter I'd say it makes sense in 3 too, considering the circumstances, adequate gear would be hard to find. At least in 2 and 3, the other armors are necessarily "better". just different
Standard issue doesn't necessarily mean the best, even in real life, it means what it means, STANDARD issue. It's hardly practical go give every rank and file the absolute best weapons and armor money can buy, granted in Mass Effect you are not standard, being an N7 you are already the best of the best. This can be explained away however that the official story was that the Normandy was going for a standard shakedown run, they probably wouldn't have requisitioned gear that was anything too special to keep up that appearance.
This is totally going to make me want to play mass effect again isn't it? Even though I already finished a legendary edition playthrough and have a massive backlog of other games. Only just under an hour in and I'm already reminded why I love this series so much. Definitely gonna have to jump back in sometime.
yh i want to play again but i also did a legendry edition playthrough recently and dont want to play it so soon i like to try forget as much as i can so i usually play it once a year or every 2 years
Daniel Lucas: I know the feeling, it happens anytime someone new plays these games, especially the first one. now a days even with legendary edition I mostly skip Mass Effect 1 and go straight to Mass Effect 2, and if I do play it I go as the default Shephards just to get to Mass Effect 2 & 3, there the better games of the series in my opinion. that's where I create my own character and go from there, although it would be nice if this game had mod support. because while the character creation is better than it used to be, it's still not perfect by any means.

I'm SO glad I've discovered Kolo and her ME playthrough! Though I just need to get one thing I'm freaking out about off my chest and into the void: her not talking to all her squadmates after missions is really making me concerned about the future fate of one very specific squaddie 😳

Just coming across this now, but honestly I teared up a bit with your sheer excitement and awe of the Citadel. Docking at the Citadel for the first time is one of my favorite moments in the trilogy. It’s such an iconic moment.

"She's a ginger." That likeness of Commander Shepard was voted on online and that ginger Femshep won out. They started with several different facial structures and hair styles. Once that was voted on, they put the hair color to a vote and that default redheaded Femshep is what won.
I just started this video and I think the fact you play on causal is awesome. Not that you have to justify it at all, a lot of people hang their hats on how "hard" they can play the game. Refreshing to see someone here for the story, because it is a GREAT story. Now to the rest of the 3 hour video lol

Honestly, I wish I could find someone else who dove into the role of Adept as their first experience for the game. It changes your entire experience when you add "Magic" to a shooter style game, and so many people just seem to pick soldier right out of the gate without giving the magic a chance

Played the series more often, than I can recount. Speedran 1 and 2. For your choices: Just go with what you want to be morally aligned with. Bottom option is mostly (lawful evil) renegade middle option is neutral or demanding more informations. top option is the kind way (lawful good). At the left of those options there will be options which open up dialoge to deepen your background information on the conversation topic. Keep it up! I chuckled alot at your peril - call me mean - but it makes watching very entertaining even for me^^ U got my sub, bell and commet for this series :)
It's funny. My sister who never played a game before played Skyrim and managed to kill her housecarl too, Lydia was the name of the housecarl. The similarities in your playing experiences are stunning. And tragic... My experience in playing games began with PONG. My housecarl, Lydia, became the wife of my character and bore children for him. And was a constant adventuring companion for 3000+ hours of game play on THAT character alone. I love your reaction to the cute little guy at 3:19:00, when I first bought the game it came with a concept art book and I loved how some guy scribbled "cute backpack" on one of their main concept artworks of those aliens. I love the soundtrack of this game, you're going to love the map music I think, spent hours and hours looking at planets and never got bored of it.

I've played Mass Effect 1 well over a dozen times since it was first released. It's been so long since I first played it that I've sort of become blind to how much the game tries to get you to mistrust Nihlus. It's so fun to see how you're interpreting things without the knowledge of how things will turn out that I have. In my repeat playthroughs I find myself blazing through conversations that I know the outcome of. It's so refreshing to see you consider all the options in dialogue. I look forward to watching the rest of the game and the trilogy as well.
Oh you are going to love Ilos, I can't wait for further playthroughs. And not gonna lie, I'm so envious you are playing it for a first time! Enjoy enjoy, it's a magical ride.

I just want to say, first time I found you on UA-cam and it's after I had a whole deep dive into mass effect lore videos for a mass effect itch that just popped up lately. I have watched a great deal of playthroughs, but so far, yours was by far the most entertaining - I've never really seen someone go 110% into mass effect like you and it's been real fun to watch (also, I swear I never even KNEW you could upgrade stuff early on - pretty sure I just unga-bunga'd my way through most of it lol).
I played through the game twice now, and just now piece together that it's corporal Jenkins you talk to at the beginning of the game, and it's him that dies within 10 seconds of landing on Eden Prime. Classic red shirt setup

I applaud you for trying games outside your normal style. You picked a good one for storyline. If I can make a recommendation (That I haven't seen mentioned in the comments yet), most modern shooter style games (well most game nowadays really) should have an Options screen, and a selection that lets you look at a visual representation of the controller with all the buttons and their functions labelled. IT's usually a really good idea when starting a new game that has as many button/menu options, like this one, to familiarize yourself with it before you get too heavy into the game. This game has a basic tutorial that points out some basic tactics as you move through the first mission, but there's a lot of things that they won't tell you, that can be found in the Options menu.
Good playthrough. Yes, the character work and writing is generally top tier in this game, It's surprisingly good, not to mention the stellar voice acting to go with it. It's a big reason these games are so loved by so many people. On top of that we have beautifully crafted lore, intelligent science and the game never treats you like an idiot. It doesn't hand hold and it doesn't impose. The sweet spot for great games.
53:35 Funny thing, in the most recent game Mass Effect Andromeda, that happened to me. I was in convo, but I was also apparently in combat, so this turret was just fuckin pounding me and I was stuck in a dialog tree. Got out of it just in time.

There is a reference to this in ME2, that STG inspired the Spectres, but was better funded. "We didnt have to buy our own weapons."

I hope you're enjoying playing this as much as I'm enjoying watching it - a first Mass Effect experience is always a heck of a thing. I've sunk so many hours and done so many playthroughs of this game, and I never get tired of it.
I love your reaction to the cute little guy at 3:19:00, when I first bought the game it came with a concept art book and I loved how some guy scribbled "cute backpack" on one of their main concept artworks of those aliens.
I love the soundtrack of this game, you're going to love the map music I think, spent hours and hours looking at planets and never got bored of it.

I've played Mass Effect 1 well over a dozen times since it was first released. It's been so long since I first played it that I've sort of become blind to how much the game tries to get you to mistrust Nihlus. It's so fun to see how you're interpreting things without the knowledge of how things will turn out that I have. In my repeat playthroughs I find myself blazing through conversations that I know the outcome of. It's so refreshing to see you consider all the options in dialogue. I look forward to watching the rest of the game and the trilogy as well.

I just want to say, first time I found you on UA-cam and it's after I had a whole deep dive into mass effect lore videos for a mass effect itch that just popped up lately. I have watched a great deal of playthroughs, but so far, yours was by far the most entertaining - I've never really seen someone go 110% into mass effect like you and it's been real fun to watch (also, I swear I never even KNEW you could upgrade stuff early on - pretty sure I just unga-bunga'd my way through most of it lol).
I played through the game twice now, and just now piece together that it's corporal Jenkins you talk to at the beginning of the game, and it's him that dies within 10 seconds of landing on Eden Prime. Classic red shirt setup

I felt exactly what you felt !! You found the right words !!! I cannot wait to see you playing Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, as I really really love the first Mass Effect, but the second one and the third one are very different and so much better !! You'll see it by yourself, and I bet you'll be surprised and happy ! I LOVE the Mass Effect trilogy, the first one is really excellent, but ME2 and ME3 are far above it !

I applaud you for trying games outside your normal style. You picked a good one for storyline. If I can make a recommendation (That I haven't seen mentioned in the comments yet), most modern shooter style games (well most game nowadays really) should have an Options screen, and a selection that lets you look at a visual representation of the controller with all the buttons and their functions labelled. IT's usually a really good idea when starting a new game that has as many button/menu options, like this one, to familiarize yourself with it before you get too heavy into the game. This game has a basic tutorial that points out some basic tactics as you move through the first mission, but there's a lot of things that they won't tell you, that can be found in the Options menu.
I agree, and sometimes while they hint at buttons you can press often the game does it when you're distracted by something else and you can miss it.
Good playthrough. Yes, the character work and writing is generally top tier in this game, It's surprisingly good, not to mention the stellar voice acting to go with it. It's a big reason these games are so loved by so many people. On top of that we have beautifully crafted lore, intelligent science and the game never treats you like an idiot. It doesn't hand hold and it doesn't impose. The sweet spot for great games.

53:35 Funny thing, in the most recent game Mass Effect Andromeda, that happened to me. I was in convo, but I was also apparently in combat, so this turret was just fuckin pounding me and I was stuck in a dialog tree. Got out of it just in time.
