The dialogue is often more about tone than actual choice. Dialogue wheel: Options to the left is for more information, options to the right is towards concluding the conversation. Upper right: gives paragon points, lower right: gives renegade points, centre right: neutral option. Paragon points caps out your charm, renegade points cap out your intimidate. Optimal for being able to always use charm/renegade options during convos is to focus on one or the other. But always do what you feel is right : )

Just subbed, Kali. I love watching people experience this game. I've been replaying it so much since when it first came out all those years ago. Don't worry about making incorrect decisions. As you said, this is your first playthrough, so you will most likely make some iffy decisions (I know I did). Don't worry about it. Also, don't let people tell you how to play it. If you want suggestions, feel free to ask, but just go with the flow of the game.
I'm looking forward to your experience!
BTW - your selections on the left side of the conversation wheel can be mostly asked without consequence. It just changes some other convo options. It's your picks on the right side of the wheel (Paragon/Renegade) that decide certain outcomes later.

Welcome surprise, you're in for a treat with this one, ME being one of the best story driven franchises ever made in my opinion. The first game can be a little rough around the edges, especially in terms of combat, but in terms of story and world building it is fantastic. Also the combat does get significantly better in the next 2 games, albeit the RPG elements were watered down a bit.

7:55 It doesn' mean "no gun". All classes can use all weapons in ME1. It's just that you get bonuses if you have specialized weapon training with a weapon (=put skill points into a weapon to increase accuracy and damage).
Shepard is 29 btw. Born in 2154 and current year 2183 means she's not in her thirties.
As for the conversation wheel - the left side options provide additional information, the options on the right side move the conversation along (in general - occasionally the left side options might also move the conversation along, but that is not the norm).

    • @KnoxCarbon
      @KnoxCarbon 3 місяці тому

It used to be WAY worse. Back during the original 360 release, if you didn't specialize in a weapon, you'd get an accuracy and recoil penalty that made the weapon practically unusable. You couldn't even zoom a sniper if you weren't a Soldier or Infiltrator. It was tweaked in the LE release to bring it more in line with ME3, so now you can use whatever weapon you want, but you can't get as much mileage out of it that you could if you picked a class that specialized in it.

First of all, happy to see that you're enjoying this game so far! The tearing is only a minor nuisance to me. I hope it won't stop you from playing. Also, how are you _so_ good at the circle-mini-game? Most people stumble through it and either succeed or fail it by accident.
Without trying to spoil, I may have a few gameplay tips you might find handy. You already seemed to have figured out a few of them by yourself (great job, by the way; most people actually _require_ the comments to figure some things out), but I suppose giving you a bit of confirmation or advice won't hurt.
    1) "Huh." 56:18
If you see/hear someone say that, it means they have something on their mind and you can get some content/info by talking to them. Once you move out of the area where they spoke, they won't bring it up anymore, so you'll miss out on it entirely.
    2) Loot that you miss in the field, you miss, unfortunately. The locker at 1:45:10 is your own locker and the game decided to give you some loot to award you, in the guise of you having this in your personal locker.
    3) Charm / Intimidate correspond to the Paragon / Renegade bars in your skill screen. Those will fill up based on your actions as well. 'Being compassionate' or 'helping people' will earn you Paragon points, whereas 'Getting the job done', 'Being tough' or 'being ruthless' will earn you Renegade points.
The dialogue wheel options represent those two as well; the top option _always_ corresponds to Paragon choices, whereas the lower option will correspond to Renegade choices. Like at 1:56:07 "He's dangerous" is the diplomatic/nice answer, "It's the truth" is entirely neutral, while "They're blind" is the Renegade approach. You'll see this level of dialogue throughout the game in this order.
None of them are bad options, but they can have implications on how other characters view you. Sometimes they also influence the main story or determine whether you get a side quest or not.
    4) There's still an annoying bug in place where dialogue options sometimes switch around. You may accidentally skip out on one of the investigate options because the game switched an unchosen option to the top after you checked the top option.
    5) 1:49:43 What he means is that stores and merchants out in the field also sell licenses next to their regular weapons and armor. Purchasing those licenses will allow your requisition officer to buy weapons and armor so you'll have access to them when you're not in the vicinity of a store. Licenses are usually pretty cheap, so it would be recommended to buy them whenever you come across them. 'Unique' items are usually very useful (and also not expensive; the game doesn't want you to miss out on those) and you generally can't find them anywhere else. Which can be a hassle if you encounter those in an area you can't return to.
    6) The Codex is a massive undertaking of lore, but if you like lore it's going to make you _really_ happy. Many of them are interesting, though it's going to be a lot. And it'll keep adding entries to it when you pick up something, encounter something new or investigate places (like that location in Engineering next to Chief Engineer Adams).
Just a quick note; the _Primary_ Codex entries are all fully voiced, whereas the _Secondary_ entries aren't.
    7) Also, the Citadel (and all the locations) could take _hours_ to explore, so you can spend days there (IRL) just walking around, talking and exploring. It's intended for people to get a grand feeling of the Mass Effect world (or in this case, its universe). Lots of places also allow you to overhear people or talk to them and pick up sidequests along the way, just like how everything adds to creating world-building in terms of lore. Don't be afraid to explore either locations or dialogue options. After all, it's an RPG. Those tend to reward explorers.
Also, keep in mind you can also talk with the Volus ambassador next to the Elcor ambassador at 2:00:00 . A lot of people think the small creature is merely there to interject your conversation with the large creature, but the Volus is an ambassador in his own right as well.

  • @Cheepchipsable
    @Cheepchipsable Рік тому +2

Game is definitely very verbose at the beginning.
You will probably pick up a couple of squad mates before leaving the Citadel again.
In combat to use squadmates powers you need to target an enemy with your crosshair first, then order them to perform the action. (I'm pretty sure it has to be line of sight also)
You only get one shot, then the power has to recharge. In the option you selected for squadmates to use all powers at will, so they might not be available all the time.
So you could damage the shield of one enemy, (the blue line over their health), and overload the weapon on a different enemy before returning to the fight.
Also there are shields and barriers - respectively blue and purple lines over the enemies (red) health bar.
Some powers only work on shields, some only on barrier, and some only on unshielded/barrierless opponents.
Unavailable powers for that target will be "oranged" out. Often you can coordinate powers to have a squadmate take down their shield which make it easier for you to finish off.
I'm sure you will get the hang of it, but I found it annoying to have to learn while playing by guesswork or luck.
I have heard overlays running in the background can cause graphics problems.
I'm sure you will enjoy this game.

Unfortunately you missed the conversation between Jenkins and Dr. Chakwas in the very beginning on the ship. They talk about the destination Eden Prime, what specters are and later in the game and in ME2 your teammates and Chakwas talk about Jenkins, but you now never really talked to him.

  • @Kaplunco

I'll tell you why i really liked this ME playthrough compared to others. Most people pick a biotic class or tech class and play the whole game like soldiers, never using their powers and wondering why the assault rifle sucks. You actually play like an Infiltrator. As you upgrade your powers, you'll find yourself using them more often and relying less on guns. You pick up upgrades and actually use them and compare new weapons stats. I've seen entire playthroughs where people don't put upgrades on their guns! You equip your squadmates. You convert the garbage into omnigel, you're not afraid to be a renegade. In your first video, you already showed you have a good grasp on the game mechanics. I'm so looking forward to this series!

    A couple tips.
1 make sure to keep charm and intimidate up to date.
2 You can set in settings that Squad mates use powers automatically instead of you having to assign it all the time.
    3 Dialogue wheel understanding
Top right Paragon= blue =best option
Middle right=middle of the road not good or bad.
Bottom right= Renagade= red= I want to be an AHole.
Left is always investigate unless given a blue or red dialogue option.
Be careful what you choose cause your choices really matter in this game. Aka who lives who dies and who comes to the next game with you.
Also remember this may be a remaster, but the game came out in 2007.
    Hope you keep loving it.

Thank you for not brutally shooting the first alien creature you see ("Gasbags") like some players do! I sort of have gotten into the habit of judging new ME playthroughs on if they shoot the Gasbags or not. If they kill them on sight without considering the situation, I figure they are treating this like a pure Shooter. If they don't, they are treating this more like an RPG. I'm much more into RPGs, so I gravitate toward that style playthrough to watch.

  • @garyballard179
    @garyballard179 Рік тому +3

It's not often that UA-cam recommends a Mass Effect playthrough so close to the first episode being posted! Usually the algorithm waits until a player is halfway through ME2 or even the beginning of ME3 😅
Since ME1 released in 2007 I've completed 35 playthroughs of the trilogy, and there's still a couple things I've only seen in UA-cam videos.
I'll try not to spoil story elements, and stick to technical details, user interface, and behind-the-scenes facts.
I'm sure you've noticed by now that bottom answers tend to be rude or even racist. "Renegade" Shepard is very much an Earth-first end-justifies-the-means character. It provides a lot of funny lines, but it's hardly helpful.
Upper responses are "Paragon" heroic responses. They tend to be lawful, by-the-book, nobody-left-behind options.
Middle-right dialog options are neutral, net no Paragon or Renegade points, and tend toward the intellectual or practical.
Left-side dialog options usually extend conversations (right side tends to exit conversations). Options under Investigate also frequently provide XP and new codex entries. The upper and lower left options that appear after an NPC's response are opinion-based follow-ups to that response, and disappear after selecting another topic. They also tend to provide small Paragon/Renegade point boosts.
The "natural" alignment for Shepard's service histories are Paragon/War Hero, Renegade/Ruthless, and Survivor/Neutral; though you can certainly mix and match. I've yet to see anyone try being a Ruthless Paragon.
Overall, though, in ME1 it's best to largely stick to either Paragon or Renegade so you can accumulate points and unlock higher-level Charm/Intimidate dialogue options. There's going to be a few that you can't pick for your first playthrough, as it requires knowing enough about the system to plan out your playthrough. After leaving the Citadel, all Charm/Intimidate skill checks jump to minimum seven points. So, don't sweat it for your first playthrough - it'll be your _second_ playthrough when you get to apply everything you've learned. (You also get New Game + bonuses based on achievements unlocked in your previous playthrough. Such as playing as an Adept and using the Singularity talent a lot to "Master" it lets you add Singularity as a bonus talent to any class that doesn't already have it. So you could have an Infiltrator with biotics, and characters would even recognize Shepard as being biotic despite Infiltrator not normally being a biotic class.)
Best weapons are Spectre-class weapons purchased at the Requisition Office at C-Sec Academy on the Citadel. They're available in Mk VII and Mk X models (you're at Mk I and Mk II gear). At Mk VII armors add a second mod slot. Mk VII weapons add a second weapon mod slot.
Best armor is Colossus and/or Phantom, found at random. You can get one set of Colossus armor as a mission reward in ME1's only DLC, Asteroid X-57 "Bring Down The Sky")
Some celebrity voice talent in the game:
ME1 introduces Seth Green as Joker and Keith David as Captain Anderson. Shepard is voiced by Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer. Saren is voiced by Fred Tatasciore, who has been in hundreds of games and animated shows and films. Saren's second-in-command, Lady Benezia, is voiced by Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi in Star Trek TNG). Garrus is voiced by Brandon Keener, who has had small roles on various TV shows and commercials.
ME2 adds Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck, The Handmaid's Tale), Martin Sheen, Micheal Dorn (Worf on Star Trek TNG), Shohreh Agdashloo (The Expanse), Claudia Black (Farscape, Stargate SG1, Dragon Age), Adam Baldwin, Robin Sachs, Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix), Simon Templeton (Dragon Age Origins), Steve Blum, Courtney Taylor, Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica)...
    ME3 adds Freddie Prinze Jr.
Freddie's character is also the star of a Mass Effect anime film, Paragon Lost. It takes place near the end of ME2, and has spoilers, so it's best to watch it as a prequel to ME3.
There's also several novels and comic books:
The novel Revelation covers Anderson's first meeting with Saren. It's set 20 years before the games, so there's no spoilers.
The novel Ascension takes place shortly after ME1, and contains slight spoilers at this point.
The novel Retribution is a direct sequel to Ascension. Best to read both _after_ starting ME2.
The comic book Redemption takes place directly after the prologue of ME2. Its a good read after your first episode of ME2.
Homeworlds is a collection of short origin stories for several squadmates from the trilogy, and several have mild spoilers for the events of ME2.
Invasion is a prequel to ME3, and contains major spoilers for the ending of ME2.
Evolution is the backstory of Martin Sheen's character from ME2. It takes place at the end of the First Contact War, over 30 years before the games. Saren and Ashley's grandfather appear as well. While it would be "safe" to read after your first episode of ME2, it might be best to wait until after ME2's ending.
Overall, you're going to have an amazing and epic adventure. And your second playthrough will be even more satisfying.
Sorry to see the issue with screen tearing. Bioware optimized the game for PS4 and XBOne, not for PC, XBox S/X, or PS5, and I doubt there will ever be a patch.

This is...kind of an overwhelming amount of info and tips/guidance to give a brand new player on the very first episode of a blind playthrough. And wouldn't it be more fun to come across familiar voices organically and be excited to recognize them instead of knowing in advance they would be there? I just had that experience with Horizon Forbidden West, and it was a cool moment to recognize a character's VA when I didn't even know they were going to be in the game. I guess that's my preference at least 🤷‍♀

I mean, I guess it's impractical if you have to wear a space helmet, but I'm sure there are lady astronauts in real life who have long hair, and they manage to put it up in a way that lets them wear a helmet with ease. It the games seemingly take place in the past, like Skyrim, I think it makes more sense for both male and female warriors to have long hair. The clean cut military look, I think, was started by Rome, but a Greek or Norseman warrior would almost definitely have long hair and beards. And if you're playing as an elf, you expect them to have an inclination to look natural, which would mean they don't cut their hair.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that you didn't know, but *Technically* Mass Effect is an RPG and back in the ancient dark past, cRPG's used to try & emulate Pen and Paper Roleplaying games, where Player Agency, Players CREATING the story through their actions, was the default experience. So having 'choices' in dialogue was the standard, not a bonus.
Of course, no computer program in existence will ever be able to match the interactivity of even a modestly talented Gamemaster & a decent bunch of Roleplayers. At least not until we get something like Sword Art Online. Whether that will actually be good or bad, I couldn't say.

  • @torikazuki8701
    @torikazuki8701 5 місяців тому

I like the thoroughness with which you go through the options & game details. The nice thing about Mass Effect is that there are tons of nerdy tech-details about the game's history & technology, which the player can investigate if they so choose, but they aren't *forced* to.
I did want to point out something though, that while it doesn't ruin the game, does turn out to be kind of silly in retrospect. The Introduction, where you watch Eden Prime being attacked via Helmet-Cameras, creates a ton of problems later on. Think about how valuable those cameras would have been for proof of events. The camera's ability to record things is almost NEVER brought up again. In retrospect, it would have been a lot better for BioWare to just have dumped the idea entirely.
Obviously you recorded this 8 months ago, but I hope you enjoyed the experience & if you're not done yet, continue to do so.

You will get emotionally attached. It's different for everyone now. I had to wait years between Hames to see your old friends again. Made it that much sweeter. The only advise I can give without any spoilers is always have a hanky nearby.

The Mass Effect trilogy, along with the Bungie era Halo games, were my childhood. I honestly feel kinda sorry for the newest generation of gamers. It seems that they only get a masterpiece every once in a while. We got like five per year on average. Developers had new and ambitious ideas and corporate publishers kept their greed in check enough that it didn't derail their products' creative spirit. That doesn't seem to be common nowadays.

I got this game back in 2008 after 16 year old me managed to convince my mother to let me buy it with my Christmas money. Played through Eden Prime and liked it, but wasn’t overwhelmed by how much I liked it.
Then I saw the Citadel-or more specifically the approach to the Citadel-and was hooked. Even on the Xbox 360 during the relatively early stages of the console’s lifespan (original release: November 7th, 2007) the cutscene was very impressive visually.
Hundreds of hours of gameplay later, the trilogy-and specifically Mass Effect 1-stands the test of time as my favorite video game ever.

After watching so many playthroughs from so many people and playing this game for countless years I'm ready to give my opinion on this first original conversation. Does no one realize how stupid it was for an entire galactic Civilization to base all their technology on an unknown species' achievements? What if a mass relay breaks? What if a planet gets bombarded by an ancient weapon by accident? How do you fix these problems with no knowledge from that species' achievements? Isn't this just like shooting blind?

Sometimes you laugh and sometimes you cry. Lots of cultural and political topics. You are a skilled player and I think you'll end up being a hero. But it will also show who you are. 0n the conversation wheel, the bottom choices are Rogue, the top choices are Paragon, and middle choices give no points. Good Luck!

  • @ldkinbote
    @ldkinbote Рік тому

Infiltrator, NICE. I picked that my first playthrough also. AND you seem to be taking the class(es) into consideration when equipping yourself and squad members to play to your strengths. VERY good. This is my favorite game series and I've played through the trilogy MANY times and ME: Andromeda a couple of times. I love this universe and lore and it does benefit you (in all the games since I know you're on ME2 at this point) to explore and talk to everyone you can and to look around every room 'cause you never know what things may be not readily visible when you first come in a room. You can get a lot of gems (items and lore expansions) by doing that. I've played through these SO many times and I just found something I'd never seen before in ME2. It was such a good feeling.
Have fun and nobody plays their perfect game their first playthrough. Things will have consequences you didn't foresee and then you say, "Next time I'll do it another way and see how that goes," but that's what multiple playthroughs are for. 😁
I've played as just about every class at least once (except I don't think I played as an Engineer). My favorites are Infiltrator, Adept, and Sentinel. I'm playing ME2 now as an Adept and have been speccing her out (actually all of my squad) for damage and have been doing pretty good on Insanity level. You're doing good, from what little I've seen, on Veteran. Thank you for playing this and posting it. It makes me all warm inside to watch someone get into this world.

You're in for one heck of a journey with this series, looking forward to seeing you experience it! Mass Effect single-handedly got me to buy my first actual gaming PC back in 2010-ish (a monstrosity of circuitry that technically qualified as a "laptop computer", even though it bruised and/or burned said lap if used as such for too long), and subsequently getting a new one in time for ME3, and later building my first ever desktop myself for ME:Andromeda (which I still use today, should probably upgrade before the next ME comes out lol). Really weird that you had that screen tearing issue with the Legendary Edition... I played it right after release and didn't have any issues like that, sucks that you had a rough start with the game in that way :/
