When asked which episode he was most looking forward to people seeing, Neil Gaiman said "episode 6, but only after you've earned it by watching episode 5." Having read the comics, you probably understand what he means.
Am very excited for the Death episode, that’s where Dream (and the audience) learns so much about himself and his place. It’s great progression for Dream to find his place now equipped with all his tools and the treatment of humanity. Have a feeling it’s going to hit hard if it’s anything like issue 8
Love episode 6 can't wait
@@FandomZone episode 6 was my favorite episode... it is just perfect. Kirby is Death of the Endless 110%, anyone that doubted that obviously didn’t know what they were talking about. . The Sound of Her Wings was also always one of my favorites.. and Neil was right saying we had to suffer the pain of episode 5 to truly appreciate episode 6.
Cant wait for you guys to react to it !
♥️
John Dee is a much more complex character in the Netflix version than the comic. Just as terrifying but in a very different way. Gaiman has had 33 years to develop as a writer between the first Sandman comic arc and the release of the live action show, and it shows. This version of John Dee is an emotionally stunted victim of his upbringing, life experience, and hospital imprisonment. He retains the megalomania and nihilistic worldview of his comic book counterpart, but lacks the sadism and desire for personal power. Instead, he sees himself as a savior, and believes that his actions are for the sake of a greater good.
The end results are largely the same, resulting in the destruction of everyone around him, but this version of John Dee is someone for whom we feel pity rather than revulsion. In some ways, he is like a child with a gun. Whatever the tragic outcome, he cannot be held responsible for his actions because he has lacks the moral foundation for proper judgement.
When I was younger, like many young people, I believed in the importance of being honest to a fault. Then as you mature, you begin to realize something important. That expressing every thought and feeling that passes through you is not honesty. Because your feelings can themselves be lies, and to express what you're feeling may therefore be a lie. That our actions, not our words or feelings, are the truth of who we are. So choosing to put only the most positive aspects of ourselves out into a world is a genuine choice, an honest choice, and far more reflective of who we really are.
This is a wonderful episode, but John cheated the people, he did NOT get the honest truth, he took that away from them. The one point where they all realize he is the one doing that to them, they picked up weapons to kill him, and he stopped them from doing that. It was at that point where John lies to himself, being a hypocrite.
Plus, taking away parts of people makes them different than what they were before. Like, you can't take away someone's empathy, see them being cruel, and say you've proven that people are cruel. You've rigged the experiment. You made them cruel.
@Anneke Oosterink I was thinking much the same way about rigging the experiment. Skewing the results doesn't prove the experiment. It actively disproves it. And that's basically what John has done.
why is everyone missing the elephant in the room - this isn't "the" truth ultimately but JOHN'S truth ... this is a situation of HIS making - this is what HE believes humanity to be ... and he grabbed the ice cream because he wanted to watch the show ... a show HE created but believes to be what he thinks honesty would be - (EDIT) scrolling through the comments and came across a comment by @dancedj2k2 that points out the spot where you should know this isn't "honesty" but John's fantasy - they all stood with knives ready to kill John and he made them drop them - showing HIS dishonesty with himself ... and the veil of who is actually pushing this story
want to push this a bit further as this shows how tainted we all are by the lie of human nature we have been sold - we are constantly told how humans are intrinsically evil - something we believe which allows us to buy into John's lies ... we ARE NOT even if the religions created by man to control humans have told us this ... understand how much of what we view as reality is actually based on the stories we are told from childhood on and have been told for millennia
Well, I think it can be seen as an extreme conclusion to their truth. John is, of course, so twisted and disturbed from his life combined with the effects of harnessing the ruby, he believes it’s the way it should be. The more he uses it in the diner, the more it twists things in accordance with the Doctor Destiny ego.
@@0okamino who is Doctor Destiny .. who he is in the comics? I'm just going by the show and haven't read the comics ... from what I understand they have done their best to separate this from DC proper (mostly due to rights issues)
@@Xenophrenia Yes, in the comics, John Dee is an old Justice League villain (bodysuit, cape and all that), locked up in Arkham Asylum, naked and physically grotesque. He does have a similarly meek demeanor when he escapes and goes after the ruby, but still much more overtly evil. I think the portrayal of John in the show brings a certain dimension to the character that makes him more interesting, and more sympathetic, which accentuates the menace as more sadistic, megalomaniacal characteristics start to surface. So, they did successfully separate it without utterly stripping away the essence of the connection for those who know about it. I really appreciate that when I notice it. It's like a cool little wink and nod, you know?
John thinks that when he takes away parts of people, that they become more honest. But at that point you've taken something away from them, so they can't possibly be honest. Like, if you take away people's empathy, they become cruel, because you've taken their empathy. You can't then say you've proven that people are cruel, when you prevented them from being anything else.
It's like saying that when you reduce people down to their base instincts, they become bad. However there are two problems there; 1, people are not just base instincts, they have higher reasoning and empathy. Taking away an essential part of what makes them human proves nothing. And 2, people also have base instincts to be held and cared for, and to hold and care for others, our instincts scream at us to take care of children for example. Our base instincts aren't just murdering others and eating.
People who think like that scare me. Like, they are basically saying that they are a hair away from murdering everyone, but they are stopped by their reasoning. I don't want to hurt other people, it makes me feel bad, even if I didn't hurt them, people who are hurt don't make me feel good.
I loved how the cinematographer messed with the style. It really felt like they had intentionally filmed it like a b-grade Hallmark film which just doubled the discomfort when they threw in a Dutch angle or a shot that just broke the Hallmark expectation
Slowly changing the color tones really played a strong role in breaking the Hallmark film feel and slowly drag it into the horror realm.
Man this episode was absolutely incredible, top tier cinema right here. Absolutely great what they did there. The madness. The thirst. I would go as far as say this is one of the best TV episodes this year, by far my favourite episode of Sandman and one of my favorites ever on a TV show. It was one of the best one set story telling experiences I’ve ever seen. I loved it so so much.
"You're still seeing it with your eyes. Close them." I love how the collective response was to *know* what was going to happen next.
@5:53 it’s David Thewlis, I cannot fathom not finding him handsome!
Great interpretation of the comic, because I *hated* everyone in the diner (to various degrees) in the comic. Especially John Dee.
This version makes each character fully complex individuals.
Great reactions!
I am so excited for your reaction to the next episode! This episode is so... thought provoking. Every episode is, and I absolutely love it.
We were worried that this ep would just be us pulling some faces or starting blankly because it was all thought provoking dialogue which we didn't want to miss. The intensity, the suspense, the themes. Its so enjoyable, each episode feels unique
This episode was so unnerving but I love that Dream recognized that John wasn't at fault, what lead him to use the ruby like he did wasn't of his own making or fault. He couldn't control how he grew up or how it affected him and the ruby didn't come to him by his choice and he could therefor not chose it or the side effects it had on him. Unlike anyone else, aside from Johanna and her gf, that knowingly stole from him and used the items for their own gain. Just like Johannas gf who i can't remember the name off, they had no part in it and was simply drawn in by the items and got peaceful outcomes.
The sense of quiet, mounting tension created in the diner is just perfectly done. I was also especially concerned about how this story would be adapted considering the sheer level of gratuitous violence in the comic; there *is* is a message behind it, but it risked being lost if the show favour shock over all.
Choosing to draw more on the psychological aspects; relationships, jealously, violence, deceit, abusive behaviour that humans have the capacity for was a fine choice. Really neatly done when juxtaposed with the ‘right’ (as it were!) level of visceral, bloody violence.
The lack of overarching narration that the comic had also helped this, I felt. No distance from which the victims could be seen as ‘other’; we’re drawn into their experiences that John mere….exposes, rather than orchestrates as he does in the comic.
This episode freaked me out. That ruby is extremely powerful and why morphius wanted it back in a hurry.
As much as I love ep 6 I think ep 5 is the best in its storytelling and visuals at the same time. Loved reaction!
Oh shit I meant to say that 5th is better at things lol mixed em up. I edited my original comment
this episode was fucking crazy. i was not expecting it at all especially after all the different vibes we got from the previous episodes.
I LOVE how this episode was changed from the comic. It's much more of a coherent story, it has way more nuance.
The comic has a bit of shock horror to it.
I've had the same feeling about it. Nuance is something this show has done so well.
Came across you when I was watching Sandman reactions. Really enjoyed yours, you have comments and reactions but the do not interfere with the story and your choices of what to show are spot on. I have subscribed and watching your next reactions also looking forward to your House of the Dragon reactions. Well done thank you.
Great reaction and the talk you have after the Sandman episode is very insightful I loved hearing both of your perspectives.
Thank heavens for Julia! I reacted PRECISELY the same way. Great storytelling with he lighting & music, but I don't think I could ever watch that again. Creepy as hell! 😬
I took off work just to listen to your voices.
14:53 the hell was that glitch xDD
Honestly i feel like the stuff thats happen on the comic is more disturbing and this version is tamed, i think its because in the comics they spend the whole dinner scene in one issue and the next issue is dream confronting john and its because the other smalls detail can be told by speech bubbles
The comic was more disturbing, but they took the strong parts and made the ep really eerily psychologically disturbing. The subtle revelations throughout really added suspense. A very challenging issue to adapt without those details like the dialogue and time passing. They did great.
Looking forward to your reaction for the next episode. Ep 6 is just so good with its storytelling and the development of Dream.
Very keen on the Death episode. One of the best issues in the series and can't wait to see how they adapt it.
It makes me hope even more that they’ll get to do _The High Cost of Living_ somewhere along the way.
I'm glad that they didn't include the SA panel in the show. In the comic Gary SAed Judy because she "needed a real man."
Great stuff, guys. Thank you. Also I kept getti artefacts occasionally through out the video. Don't know why.
It’s on our end in the processing. We’re working off a laptop (Mac) and yeah it struggles with the larger file size vid processing. There’s often a little image glitch every so often which is unfortunate
that episode was very creepy
I felt sick to my stomach after watching
I just watched it this morning and now realizing that the show made us darker than the comic apparently
There are some differences, I’d still say the 24/7 comic is more intense and messed up. Dee drinks blood from a severed finger at one point. But in terms of psychology and actually seeing the manipulation, this is very very close
@@FandomZone I actually really liked this as an adaptation, because I think what and where they trimmed some things actually made the episode even more tense than the comic. Not to mention, the payoff when stuff went of the rails felt like a lot stronger of an impact.
It was a great adaptation, it took the strong (and in my eyes the best) parts of the comic and really made them a focus. Was great psychology throughout and tension. The slow revelations throughout the episode was masterfully done with great impact.
Hey there, do you think you could turn up the sound level on the show relative to your voice is just a little bit? It is a bit better in this episode five reaction than the previous ones, but I could still use hearing the show just a little bit better along with your voices.
I like the art in the background..is that from the Sandman when he is with the demon walking through forest in hell.
It looks similar, but it’s Swamp Thing walking through the swamp :)
@@FandomZone oh okay...It's cool...love the Swamp Thing TV show too
That was just showing heteronormalitivity in the earlier part... Not questioning.. But what to expect from st8 people
What? 🤔
