Everlast On The Hidden Backstory Of House Of Pain's Mega-Hit 'Jump Around' | People's Party Clip

  • In this clip from People's Party, host Talib Kweli and co-host Jasmin Leigh talk with House of Pain frontman Everlast about his mega-hit "Jump Around." Everlast shares the backstory of the song -- including the fact that Ice Cube passed on the beat. He also addresses the source of what just might be the world's most controversial sample. When Kweli remarks on the fact that the track launched around the same time as Kriss Kross's "Jump," Everlast tells the story of rushing their song onto the radio after learning that Joe Nicolo, co-founder of Ruffhouse Records, had heard the track and created a similar beat and theme for Kriss Kross.
For the deep hip-hop heads, Everlast's story of having Pete Rock on the track's remix is a must-see, as is the story of Pete's only time performing with House of Pain live.

@Tone R. Both are classics but you can tell Kriss Kross was written as a hit for some kids. It's a pure pop construction when you think about it, samples the Jackson 5, utilizes the boom bap energy of 90s hip hop (which we now realize was biting House of Pain's swag from "Jump Around"), using the Das EFX "iggity" rhyming style that a lot of people swag-jacked at the time. Lyrics complete throwaways whereas Everlast's battle style bars are still on point to this day.

It's refreshing to hear a white hip hop artist not trying to talk with a black cadence or use black phrases, just a guy being himself. It's actually more respectful to black culture. Same with Beastie Boys when they're interviewed.

"Jump Around" was massive in Ireland when it came out and it still is due to the House of Pain's Irish connection☘ It was such a huge track that some bars and clubs tried to ban D.Js from playing it because it sent the crowd so wild jumping everywhere and throwing their drinks in the air and causing general mayhem, it was insane😂

I was in middle school when Jump popped. I went to my first house party. Had to be hundreds of teenagers in this two story house. I’ll never forget being on the first floor and the DJ put on jump around. You could literally see the second floor bouncing from everyone jumping. From the bottom floor, shit look like it was about to cave in. Luckily it didn’t. It was so dope. Very few songs have that enthusiasm from it’s listeners.

The Pete Rock Remix , When Pete Rock Rhymes :
🎵 “ Listen to the sound that pounds, I jump around
I'm no clown, I get down
To the funk, listen to the wig out
And step to the rear, dear, cause I'm here
The P to the E to the T E rockin'
    The runs in your stockin'
So hon, put the lock in
Chillin' with the House Of Pain
    Blood stains the ground
    Huh, I jump around “ 🎵
