The Civic Racecar That Changed the Honda Game Forever

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- This car right here is an absolute game changer. For the first time in 20 years, legendary racecar builder Stephan Papadakis lifts the front clip of his legendary drag racing Civic for an unprecedented look at everything that made this car tick: the front wheel drive drag racer that blew minds and records. Big thanks to Steph for bringing this fine piece of equipment out to the Donut Garage!

Drifting or Import Drag Racing? Go!
Both✋🏻🌚
Hoonigan why not both?
Time Attack! E.O.D!
Drag
Yes please
More Papadakis, please! The man is a certified car genius; love his enthusiasm talking about his builds.
It's exciting to see Steph make that transition from Import Drag Racing to Drifting. He's been able to take that same passion and knowledge from Drag Racing and implemented it in to Formula Drift.
@@TheHoonigans And even cooler to see him wrench apart his old drag race car on camera!
@@Sookigarage he even has his own youtube channel where he does a lot of engine teardowns and builds and all his vids are crazy informative
AMEN TO THAT!
Do checkout his UA-cam channel, then :-) and I love the enthusiasm and camera manner too, really engaging and informative.
Papadakis what a LEGEND
The dude is the Honda King! Paved the way for what Import Drag racing is today.

Is the kid on your profile picture the proof of that? 😂

@Stephen Varthas My first time banged it out for quite awhile, I thought I was the champ. It wasn't until my second time that I realized it was because I was very drunk.
Dudeeee, Papadakis is such a cool guy. Like wtf.. #Goals.
He’s such a bad ass!
his YT channel is pretty mad as well, full engine teardowns and everything
his little corolla is unreal, most underappreciated race car of this century.
He’s a legend! Him, Lisa Kubo, Kenny Tran they used to be the Honda kings back in the day!
@@ChrisFu I remember those name! Dsport mag & Import Tuner Magazine. I was in middle school back then. I'm 28 now. Damn time flies by.
Ive always loved cars, and I dont think I will ever stop loving cars, but technically I dont know much about them. I dont think I will ever stop being amazed hearing people like stephan explain all the things they implement into their builds.
Man I miss those old days of Super Street
Man those were the days of the original Fast & Furious
So much fascinating builds back then. Pretty much pave the way for the import industry we have today.
Rumor is Dom from Fast & Furious was actually based off of Steph... #funfact
Sport compact car> super street
Don't forget HIN, Hot Import Nights.
Yup. Back when John Brown was a name in the industry. A buddy had a Frankenstein motor built by him. Was unreal. 12.50 all motor in a 1991 full interior Civic.
When I was young I used to love going to Dillons grocery store with my mom just to read the Super Street, Import Tuner, Honda Tuning, and Turbo Magazines. My mom would literally have to pry me from that section to go home. Lol miss those old days.
Its be said before but Nads always asks all the questions I want to know. Now add Stephan, a guy that automatically tells me what I want to know. Super informative. This is what I love Build Biology!
Yes, I remember this car from way back. This is the car that did what everyone said you couldn't do with a fwd car. Great to see Pap' the legend show us round his legendary Civic.
20 years ago, wow time flies.

Steph is one of the most down to earth dudes. Seen him twice at FD events and he's always talking to fans and answering any questions they have. Mad respect for his program.
Nads is actually pretty cool. I like his dedication

This man is a pure legend. That is it I am speechless.
We were just going to hand him the mic and let him do a full episode on his own... We just wanted to make sure he didn't leave anything out!
Seeing how jank some of this was back in the day is so great. The swapping the rear suspension for the front. Putting rear slicks on the front. Welding up the front suspension with solid bars. There's so much creative little things I think most people who want to go fast will never do or never think to do. And the fact that they did this 21 years ago is even better
Saw this car in the thumbnail, knew it would be a Nads video, clicked fast.
We like the way you think. Nads + Honda = Life.
This has to be one of the best break down videos you guys have done n I can't believe how much he broke the car down to show us how the car works. I was waiting for him to ask you if you wanted to pull the motor out to show you how simple but complex this car really is.
We 100% need more nads and old super street era hondas
Zak Wrx I'd love a series dedicated to this. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
You can clearly see this is a 90's car because of that DVS shoe company logo on the hood.
I was wondering if they sponsored the car, first thing i noticed was there symbol
The best skate shoes I ever had
@@zkeyes4056 They did. They also sponsored Shaun Carlson and Jeremy Lookofsky.
600hp back then is the same as 1,000 hp or more now
Somewhat, turbo technology isn't where it is now. Fuel Injection has advanced greatly as well, really large injectors were not available yet. They would have made more power with staged injection. If built with today's knowledge base it would be 1200-1300 whp and run deep into the 6's if not faser, since Speed Factory makes 1,200 hp and runs high 6's/low 7's on a 24.5" tall tire in a Civic that still mostly uni-body per the rules.
Truth
yeah the McLaren F1 was the ultimate hypercar of the same era and it made 618 hp
@@Hellsatanx that still is the ultimate hypercar and some worth 20-25mil used that's a helluva investment

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Stephan. He's so chilled and relaxed, and such a nice guy!
My hero car. Stephan Papadakis, hero builder. My dad had an Acura GS-R growing up so I was a Honda Boi starting at 5yo. Then discovered the women laden magazine SuperStreet and deepen my ricer roots.
Best build bioligy i've seen so far. The fact that he could take parts off and show us even the smallest things makes this one great.
Thank you so much Nads for bringing us some more heat🔥 OG Status 👌
Love watching Nads nerd out on imports. You can see the genuine excitement at times, and it actually really draws you in to wanting to know more.
Oh man, two of my favourite people in the internet talking about hondas! Any videos with Steph Papadakis is amazing, and I just love Nad's persona, great video, love to see the amount of work to make something so amazing! Loving the content!
It’s pretty cool to see a detailed look of the car I’m a Honda guy and it’s pretty amazing that they used oem parts from what I remember him saying aftermarket parts back then weren’t reliable a lot of time effort and money when into this !!!
I remember when this car was first put in all the mags and still have the issues somewhere. It was an and still is an absolute marvel of design.
If you still have those mag's take a picture of them and DM them to us on IG!
I'm watching this for the 1st time after watching Stephan Papadakis offroad race his Rav4 against the Scumbug! 😂 Truly a privilege to watch for the 1st time, though I'm late. Stephan Papadakis broke records in the hayday of the import/drag racing scene in the late 90s/2000s! A Legend.🙌Ty Hoonigan as well.👏
Nads: Fight me

Bruh!!! A double banger! And I was just sayin we need more Nads!!!!!
We had to drop it on you guys, It's one of the only ways to make it through a Wednesday!
I met Stephan at a HIN in Cali in the mid 2000's after he built the 2002 Civic drag car for AEM. Super chill dude, still have a signed poster from him. OG for sure!
These guys really laid the groundwork for the turbo setups that the "street outlaw" guys and hot diesel guys use today.
Tell it Jacob... All these impressive outputs and numbers we see in all forms of grassroots racing would't be possible if not for the sport compact movement that is morphed into the Tuner Community of today.
Weren't turbos popular in the 70s already? What did this car do?
I remember this car so well. This car and S.P. deserve legendary status!
Watching Nads "completely" geek out over Hondas is genuinely the cutest thing in the world. At the same time he's incredibly knowledgeable about them. I'm not gonna lie, at first I HATED Nads, but his knowledge and respect of all things Honda really brought me around.

Don't say completely in the mirror 3 times, or a Honda might jump out at you!
I remember this car dearly, very early 2000s in Super Street magazine. Got my own 5 gen prelude not long after, was my first car. Still own it, 16 years and going.
Jojo Calos, Adam Saruwatary, Ed Bergenholtz, Papadakis - of course - ... good times of Turbo Magazine.
Don't forget the ladies, like Lisa Kubo and Leslie Durst
These new thundacats wouldn't understand that these folks mentioned are icons of Honda racing
@@evanjackson7233 Not just Honda. Actually too much Honda is what killed import drag racing and stil dogs it in terms of turnout today. GM crushed them and because everybody was driving 10-15 year old cars Honda wouldn't support them directly. Anybody with real money can kill any Import Face-off event. Most of the cars will breakdown during eliminations. I see it all the time.
and Dave Shih! First 10-second Honda if I recall, in a CRX back in 96!
I remember these days, and definitely remember Stephen Papadakis. Man, what a legendary car/driver! Glad this car still looks/runs great after all these years.
The moment i saw the car rolling into the garage I knew Nads will be in this video. He just wouldn't let it be reviewed by someone else XD. Not that I'm mad, Nads is cool, he seems like a guy that would make a great uncle lol

Iconic AF. I was there at the first shakedown runs I think I have it on VHS somewhere. Beautiful build! RIP Shaun
Saw this car at the perterson museum, such an amazing car 🙏🏼
I was active in the scene back in the late '90s to early 2000s bracket racing my H22 swapped 92 Accord. I remember when this car came out. Legendary!
If I could talk to anyone about cars, it'd be Stephan.
Not a Honda fan but that video was so interesting. And your guest was so passionate without being boastful. Just brilliant to watch 10/10
Shaun Carlson was so ahead of his time, he did a lot of amazing things with Jason Whitfield(NuFormz) before this EK was built and I think all that was trial and error, he perfected it all on this car.
I worked with jason for years at rage performance. Jason and Shawn are 2 of the greatest minds in the import scene, it was such a lost to the scene when shawn passed away
Robert Evans that’s rad, I’m sure it was amazing being around those two during those times. And I completely agree, he left a giant impact in sport compact drag racing. So ahead of his time
@@revans026 Jason at rage performance was where it all started for me and my crew. TEAM KURRUPTION!!!
I love how this thing is a full tube chassis custom build with huge fat slicks, and it ran high 9s. Then you look at the BoostedBoiz hatch and that thing is a full on street car built with ebay parts on the same engine, and theyre creeping up on the 9s too. It's crazy how far tuning and engine management has come, and how much better tires have gotten for FWD cars. It's so cool to see where it all started.
People don't realize what Papadakis and this car did for the import culture. Those two combined really built a big portion of what the tuner scene is today.
@@TheHoonigans I this car brings back soo many memories between Papdakis, Lisa Kubo, Ed Bergenholtz, Shaun Carlson and i would even included Bisi in that group. they framed the future. I still remember breaking a tps sensor at a race in the 2000 at englishtown raceway and Papdakis actually helped us get fixed enough to limp home from the track.
Ed Bergenholtz? First to put wheelie bars on a FWD car. It was even in the NHRA Museum in Pomona.
And that means?
Uh, ok.
Please Complete All Fields No, it’s not possible to “wheel stand” a FWD car. 🤦🏼♂️
Papadakis has literally mastered every import he touches, after conquering the Honda world he went on to kill it with the 2js and is already getting 1000hp outa stock block a90 supras, def a beast

Man does that car bring back some memories. I was but a wee young lad in my 1st year of college in 1998 reading about it all the time in SCC and others. Stephen and Ed Bergenholtz are the FWD OG's. Those were good days.
7:30 - Well, you know there's some guys at a little shop called PFi that have been solving that issue with similar era cars. xD
I watched Stephen, Adam, Lisa Kubo and others drag race on cable TV channel. I would also buy many Import magazines. During those days I would go to street races in Southern Cali with my buddies Friday thru Sunday nights. This was back summer of 2000. What an amazing time.
No matter what type of car guy you are
You will always find that respect on Honda's
Holy krap, talk about flash back! Nice to see this piece of history is still around and looking so great. Yup, Del Mar fair is where I saw it. Man I feel old, oh wait, I am. 🥴

In 2000 I had a 5.0 NA that ran 11.2's and that was super fast back then but it was also my daily
Back then anything below a 13 was an extremely good time... Most factory cars run 13’s now. Ha!
@Lactrix Jesus! That's impressive! Must've been hugely built. My Cousin had one with Fitted pistons and rods, MLS head gasket , GT3076R , 3" straight through, 02 injectio and some pretty intense fuelling. Twin disc clutch etc. Think his best was an 11.3 .
My 88 mustang ran a 15:45 spinning one wheel down the whole track

I think I ran next to this car at a T&T at Pomona around 2000. I was in a 11sec Turbo Buick and cut a good light and then watched a yellow civic pass me like I was standing still and run a 9.xx. Damn impressive for the time.
I was there...the golden age of the scene.
Then they invented dirt the following year.
Every video I watch from and with Steph makes me love him more. So knowledgeable and humble

I may be miss remembering but I swear there was a yellow front drive car I seen on tv. It was a 6 cylinder turbocharged ( mabey twin) car, front wheel drive. I think it was made to run in a class just under NHRA but the goal was to hopefully create a class in NHRA. I swear it ran mid 6's in the 1/4. This is so cool being from '98.
