Tools are tools, good quality tools will last a lifetime. Also these are just tools that are heavily used due to being used by a race team. They are probably only a few years old.
I love that Papadakis Racing is cracking open old Snap On battery cases and throwing in replacement Ebay batteries. I love listening to Stephan talk, he's so soft spoken and isn't putting on a show or talking himself up. Impossible to tell from UA-cam videos, but it sure seems like he'd be a pleasant guy to work with and for.
Finally nice to see an actual working tool setup, versus another luxury, Home DIY over-organized Designer version. Here, practical utility is served without a specific spot for every single size driver and wrench, and finding the desired socket or ratchet is quick and visual. No foam Beautyrest nests needed to waste space - they're tools, not Grandma's China. Loads of practical items without fancy, frivolous stuff.

I just moved into a house with a 2 car garage for the first time. I’m moving my tools into the garage but both my grandpas left me their tools. Essentially I I get to fill the garage with family tools! It’s going to take forever to organize them and there so many old duplicates. I’m super excited to see all the tools left to me to add to my collection. I’m moving inside the house should take 2 seconds but the garage will take forever.
When I'm moving up to a "grown up" toolbox, you can bet I'm using this video as an example for layout. Throughout the entire video there were so many subtle hints that said "we've been doing this for years, and this is simply the best way to do it".
Another tip that I've found useful: stick a couple of A4-sized magnetic whiteboards on the sides of the cart. One is a shopping list; whenever someone notices a consumable close to running out it gets written down, then you pull the board off and take it with you (or just take a photo) when it's time to go shopping so nothing gets forgotten. The other board is for temporary use: measurements, clearances, temps, calculations, diagrams if you're explaining something, who's buying the beer, that kind of thing. Well handy.

A faster way (and one that rival teams use to spy on each other) of checking tire temps is a sensitive IR camera (not the cheap stuff) that shows you on an adjustable gradient the exact temperatures via color representation of the entire tire as you view it. The ability to see not only the tire's temperature but the zones on the tire that are hottest and coldest can save your car. If you slowly rotate the tire you can see any anomalies in the tire as you go.

I was like "Huh? Isn't Metric the Standard Stuff? Do I confuse Meter and Inch? What? I'm lost o.O" But I'm just a "Hobby Mechanic" on my Motorcycle in Germany, never encountered a "Standard size".
As a heavy equipment mechanic, the only metric bolts I can think of are on Allison transmissions. Everything else is standard. I wouldn't really prefer one over the other, I just like it to be consistent and not all mixed together.
@@jbthestoner5504 To be honest - there's only one advantage in Metric: It's easier to do math with it / offers more comfort. Especially if you convert Units into each other. If you got used to Inches, Foots and so on - If you imagine a football field or an american football field for an distance ... That doesn't really matter. But I've absolutly no clue about the american units because I encounter them only online and have everytime to look up what exactly foot pounds are and convert them to Newton Meter so that I can do something with a information (like, 'this ratchets can endure that amount of foot pounds') in my head :o

magnetic trays are a godsend for keeping all the fittings and bits together. no more losing that one special clamp because you sat it on the wiper cowl and driven off.

Amazing how close this is to my own box less a couple of the race specific items. Been building cars for years as a hobby and it’s neat to see how universal the process is.
i use 2x4's 2x6's and 4x4's in the shop for almost everything related to working with drive line components, pro tip, a 2x6 or 2x12 on a jack, squarely beneath the trans oil pan is a great way to remove a transmission safely from a vehicle if you dont have a transmission jack, great video guys
Portability is something that many overlook when they buy a nice big toolbox - sometimes it's more convenient to spend a bit extra for two smaller ones if you need to move it a lot. Over time, the rubber bottoms of the drawers can rip and fall apart, you can use carpet off-cuts instead. The commercially available dividers/trays are neat but if you're on a budget, or have different needs, you can pop rivet some folded sheet metal to do the job. For some on a budget, or for the rarely used tools, angler's tackle boxes can be a viable alternative, especially if the internal trays that aren't needed are removed - I used to have quite a few, before purchasing the large box/chest I have, in a variety of sizes, designs and colours - that way I knew exactly what was in each box. Still use them for some things that don't conveniently fit the big boy. For example, electric drills in one with drill bits, small disc grinders with the discs and spanners in another, Dremels and attachments in a third, etc. Some of you may use the above suggestion for PPG, welding accessories, etc. Different folks will have different needs and ideas, so the more suggestions the better chances you'll find what suits you.
I am a self confessed tool nerd, just the perfect video for me. I have been working on cars and motorbikes all my life and I have still learned so much from this video. I am so happy to see you have gaff tape!! As a theatre technician it's the only tape to use ever. Comes off clean, and is strong and sticks to anything. Easy to rip too. I'm also located in southern California! Keep up the awesome work. Great video.
Awesome video, I love seeing how others capitalize on space and ease of use of their tool boxes! One recommendation though, add a magnet to that oil filter, that way when you cut it open, most of the debris should be attached to where the magnet is stuck to on the outside.
I knew all but a couple of those tools. Pro tip: Exhaust Pipe Cutter (K-D Tools) = Oil Filter Cutter. It's basically just a large tubing cutter. I liked your ball joint tool. That's a good one since it can be so difficult to find the replacement boots for the ones you tear! I like your videos, and yes, I subscribed.

Another good use for a 2x4: If you dont have/cant find the deadblow or rubber mallet, put it between the piece you want to hammer, and a regular hammer. Use that quite often to get axles out of my bikes.
I need an axle boot clamp tool in my life! I’ve tried for years with just a pair of pliers and half the time it loosens up and I end up with a zip tie or crimp style clamp. Wow, I feel like an idiot for not realizing there was a special tool for those things.

Ha! I made the same comment. Those things have changed my life. Haven't met a crank pulley bolt it wont back out. And they're inexpensive enough he could upgrade the entire bottom drawer for the cost of ONE SnapOn impact gun.
@@athomedetail6512 I'd say, at least for the impact gun, the old SnapOn is not working. They still have to use the chain wrench for the crank bolt. I guarantee the Milwaukee will take that off with ease. That's the new standard amount of power. Anything less, I would consider no longer "working".

Lol, let me open your eyes here: Those IR pyrometers don't use the laser for measuring, it's just a funny thing to show that it's working and to show where you're pointing. In practice the pyrometers don't measure that small point that you see, they measure an area somewhere around that dot, and if you block that laser with your finger, but don't block the IR sensor you will see it reads the same temperatures and it doesn't use the laser at all. The laser is just for added fancyness...

awesome video Steph! this clearly shows that you don't need to have a very extravagant tool set and tool box to be able to build and service a competitive race car. no frills, all business! and yes, I hope we had YT or any form of social media, 15-20 years ago. just imagine the kind of reach the "OG's" can get if we had these back then. gone are the days of waiting a month or so to just buy a Super Street, Import Tuner, SCC or Turbo magazines, just to see what happened at a previous BOTI event or see whats everyones doing with their builds. now, all the information you need is right at your fingertips. lol!

Tools are tools, good quality tools will last a lifetime. Also these are just tools that are heavily used due to being used by a race team. They are probably only a few years old.
I love that Papadakis Racing is cracking open old Snap On battery cases and throwing in replacement Ebay batteries. I love listening to Stephan talk, he's so soft spoken and isn't putting on a show or talking himself up. Impossible to tell from UA-cam videos, but it sure seems like he'd be a pleasant guy to work with and for.
Finally nice to see an actual working tool setup, versus another luxury, Home DIY over-organized Designer version. Here, practical utility is served without a specific spot for every single size driver and wrench, and finding the desired socket or ratchet is quick and visual. No foam Beautyrest nests needed to waste space - they're tools, not Grandma's China.
Loads of practical items without fancy, frivolous stuff.
Love how simple your stuff is. I see all these newer guys have 40-50k in matching snapon tools that look oh so nice but you can easily tell rarely get used. Your stuff gets used and it shows. Thanks for spending the time and making these videos.
I just moved into a house with a 2 car garage for the first time. I’m moving my tools into the garage but both my grandpas left me their tools. Essentially I I get to fill the garage with family tools! It’s going to take forever to organize them and there so many old duplicates. I’m super excited to see all the tools left to me to add to my collection. I’m moving inside the house should take 2 seconds but the garage will take forever.
All of the "best practice" tips you gave made this is so much more valuable than every other random guy's toolbox tour.
When I'm moving up to a "grown up" toolbox, you can bet I'm using this video as an example for layout. Throughout the entire video there were so many subtle hints that said "we've been doing this for years, and this is simply the best way to do it".
That's what happened, Papadakis went from racecar driver to team owner. Awesome milestone for sure!
Another tip that I've found useful: stick a couple of A4-sized magnetic whiteboards on the sides of the cart. One is a shopping list; whenever someone notices a consumable close to running out it gets written down, then you pull the board off and take it with you (or just take a photo) when it's time to go shopping so nothing gets forgotten. The other board is for temporary use: measurements, clearances, temps, calculations, diagrams if you're explaining something, who's buying the beer, that kind of thing. Well handy.

A faster way (and one that rival teams use to spy on each other) of checking tire temps is a sensitive IR camera (not the cheap stuff) that shows you on an adjustable gradient the exact temperatures via color representation of the entire tire as you view it.
The ability to see not only the tire's temperature but the zones on the tire that are hottest and coldest can save your car. If you slowly rotate the tire you can see any anomalies in the tire as you go.
This is awesome. So great to see just some of the little details that an experienced mind has collected over time. The little bits of preparation like organising tools, little tools and gadgets that I didn't even know existed! I've gotta go by myself some flush cutters...

I was like "Huh? Isn't Metric the Standard Stuff? Do I confuse Meter and Inch? What? I'm lost o.O"
But I'm just a "Hobby Mechanic" on my Motorcycle in Germany, never encountered a "Standard size".
As a heavy equipment mechanic, the only metric bolts I can think of are on Allison transmissions. Everything else is standard. I wouldn't really prefer one over the other, I just like it to be consistent and not all mixed together.

Especially if you convert Units into each other.
If you got used to Inches, Foots and so on - If you imagine a football field or an american football field for an distance ... That doesn't really matter.
But I've absolutly no clue about the american units because I encounter them only online and have everytime to look up what exactly foot pounds are and convert them to Newton Meter so that I can do something with a information (like, 'this ratchets can endure that amount of foot pounds') in my head :o

magnetic trays are a godsend for keeping all the fittings and bits together. no more losing that one special clamp because you sat it on the wiper cowl and driven off.

Amazing how close this is to my own box less a couple of the race specific items. Been building cars for years as a hobby and it’s neat to see how universal the process is.
i use 2x4's 2x6's and 4x4's in the shop for almost everything related to working with drive line components, pro tip, a 2x6 or 2x12 on a jack, squarely beneath the trans oil pan is a great way to remove a transmission safely from a vehicle if you dont have a transmission jack, great video guys

Portability is something that many overlook when they buy a nice big toolbox - sometimes it's more convenient to spend a bit extra for two smaller ones if you need to move it a lot.
Over time, the rubber bottoms of the drawers can rip and fall apart, you can use carpet off-cuts instead.
The commercially available dividers/trays are neat but if you're on a budget, or have different needs, you can pop rivet some folded sheet metal to do the job.
For some on a budget, or for the rarely used tools, angler's tackle boxes can be a viable alternative, especially if the internal trays that aren't needed are removed - I used to have quite a few, before purchasing the large box/chest I have, in a variety of sizes, designs and colours - that way I knew exactly what was in each box. Still use them for some things that don't conveniently fit the big boy. For example, electric drills in one with drill bits, small disc grinders with the discs and spanners in another, Dremels and attachments in a third, etc.
Some of you may use the above suggestion for PPG, welding accessories, etc.
Different folks will have different needs and ideas, so the more suggestions the better chances you'll find what suits you.

I am so happy to see you have gaff tape!! As a theatre technician it's the only tape to use ever. Comes off clean, and is strong and sticks to anything. Easy to rip too. I'm also located in southern California! Keep up the awesome work. Great video.

Awesome video, I love seeing how others capitalize on space and ease of use of their tool boxes! One recommendation though, add a magnet to that oil filter, that way when you cut it open, most of the debris should be attached to where the magnet is stuck to on the outside.

I knew all but a couple of those tools. Pro tip: Exhaust Pipe Cutter (K-D Tools) = Oil Filter Cutter. It's basically just a large tubing cutter. I liked your ball joint tool. That's a good one since it can be so difficult to find the replacement boots for the ones you tear! I like your videos, and yes, I subscribed.

I remember the 90s and the FWD drag racing cars showing up in HRM. Hated them. Still do, but it's great to see we are similar gear heads regardless of preferences. Watched this twice now. This is good info for new wrenchers. And it is very enjoyable for us old amateurs too.

Another good use for a 2x4: If you dont have/cant find the deadblow or rubber mallet, put it between the piece you want to hammer, and a regular hammer. Use that quite often to get axles out of my bikes.
I need an axle boot clamp tool in my life! I’ve tried for years with just a pair of pliers and half the time it loosens up and I end up with a zip tie or crimp style clamp. Wow, I feel like an idiot for not realizing there was a special tool for those things.

What casters did you guys wind up getting to replace the Matco ones? I have the same toolbox and would love to upgrade my casters.

Anthony Scott just thinking more power, versatile don’t need a air hose, multiple people can work with different tools without sharing a hose, faster to pick up a tool and work.

Ha! I made the same comment. Those things have changed my life. Haven't met a crank pulley bolt it wont back out. And they're inexpensive enough he could upgrade the entire bottom drawer for the cost of ONE SnapOn impact gun.
@@athomedetail6512 I'd say, at least for the impact gun, the old SnapOn is not working. They still have to use the chain wrench for the crank bolt. I guarantee the Milwaukee will take that off with ease. That's the new standard amount of power. Anything less, I would consider no longer "working".

Lol, let me open your eyes here: Those IR pyrometers don't use the laser for measuring, it's just a funny thing to show that it's working and to show where you're pointing. In practice the pyrometers don't measure that small point that you see, they measure an area somewhere around that dot, and if you block that laser with your finger, but don't block the IR sensor you will see it reads the same temperatures and it doesn't use the laser at all.
The laser is just for added fancyness...

Great minds think alike. Just migrated all my crap to a new box, set it up pretty much like this, and for the same reasons. Never thought to put a shorty 2x4 in the bottom though... Imma be right back...

Great vid, keep em comin.When you said sometimes your impact wont take off the crank I was surprised and then I saw your impacts are 20+ years old! I bet my 3/8 MG325 would break it loose no sweat. The cordless Milwaukee High TQ 1/2" would spin it with ease and they are only 200 bucks.

awesome video Steph! this clearly shows that you don't need to have a very extravagant tool set and tool box to be able to build and service a competitive race car. no frills, all business! and yes, I hope we had YT or any form of social media, 15-20 years ago. just imagine the kind of reach the "OG's" can get if we had these back then. gone are the days of waiting a month or so to just buy a Super Street, Import Tuner, SCC or Turbo magazines, just to see what happened at a previous BOTI event or see whats everyones doing with their builds. now, all the information you need is right at your fingertips. lol!
