  • Sorry about the yippy dog. Not shown in the video; I used a flashlight to look at the coils afterward, still some dust but much improved. I recommend using the leaf blower from the front as well as the back to dislodge all dust. Happy cleaning!

I tried this method yesterday and it did work, but I would like to add a serious warning. First, if you haven't cleaned the coils in a few years, then use a vacuum cleaner with an extension to suck out as many of the particles as possible before you use the leaf blower. Then, use the leaf blower. I ended up with a disaster because I hadn't cleaned the coils in quite a while and even though I swept up underneath after I moved the refrigerator, and used a wet towel to gather the dust and debris, it went all over my kitchen. It was awful! There was a visible fog of particles in the air and I had to put on a mask. So, the leaf blower method does work, and my refrigerator is quieter and it definitely sounds better, but I would not recommend using the leaf blower until after you have vacuumed inside and underneath as much as possible. Good luck.

Thank you for the helpful information! One of my viewers recommended wheeling the refrigerator outside. That would be optimal if possible.

Our refrigerator was running constantly so I took the back off to check for dust. It was covered with dust. Due to the fact condenser is round and has coils wrapped within itself I was lost as how to clean it. Mary Ellen's tip saved the day and possibly the fridge. This was sooooo easy !!
(Now my confession) I will admit I did not watch the complete video so I did not use the wet towel. Made a mess in the kitchen and wife was upset too. Under her direction I had to spend a lot of time cleaning the kitchen-- :-)

OMG This why a woman president is long overdue and I mean this in all sincerity. I was having THEE most difficult time trying to get at all the coils even behind what you vacuum initially and I saw this and IMMEDIATELY went at it and yes in 5 minutes I was done. I got so much more using this method it was incredible, thank you thank you thank you.

Brilliant! Also, folks, you can just use the blower feature on your Shop Vac (instead of hooking up the vacuum feature)-- to blow dust out of there, off the coils! Cheaper in long run than buying cans of Compressed Air. If you don't own a leaf blower.

Great idea! I will be doing this but I will put wet towels on all three sides to insure that dust does not escape the sides of the refrigerator as well. Thanks for this great tip.

Happy to help Samantha! Another leaf lower trick is: when you car cabin filter need replacing. Get one for around $15 at Autozone, look at your manual, pull out the old one and leaf blow the area to remove debris and slip the new one in. That will save you $100😊👏🏻👏🏻

I used a very strong leaf blower and blew out the dust and used a damp towel on the other side to catch the dust. It works. Just make sure the leaf blower is strong.

    Brutal dust storm.
Remove access panels and roll the fridge to the front door.
Stuff pillows on the top of the fridge to seal up the fridge into the door frame.
THEN, from INSIDE the house, I use my biggest leaf blower to blow the
    dust OUTSIDE.
    You're welcome.

Using the leaf blower is genius.
It does a way better job than an air compressor, because volume is what you really need.
The only thing I might suggest would be to put a pair of appliance rollers under the refrigerator and roll it over to a door to the outside, if one is reasonably close. Then you could blow the dust out the door.

If you clean it annually it should not make such a mess. If you have a patio slider, perhaps you could slide it to the open door so the dust goes outside. Also a wet towel placed opposite catches the bulk of dust.

I recommend you move you the fridge whatever way you need to get in behind. Ideally you could place it up to an outside door and the dust would go outside. Mine is electric Toro power sweep.

@@maryellenslifehacks3042 Great suggestion. I'm taping a cheap furnace filter onto the rear of a 20 inch box fan and placing it in front of the refrigerator to catch the dust. Now I recall using a short Toro leaf blower once before, it worked fantastic.

Those brushes are WORTHLESS for models with the coils in the back. Unless you want to sort of stab at the dust. I have an Old Girl (2000 top/bottom GE model) and it's been running all the time, and dimming the lights in my early sixties house when shutting off..and making a clunking noise on top of that. AND-frying my HVAC, LED bulbs and electronics with power surges (!) I struggled with it today. I think the most important thing I did was opening up the dust-choked slots in the cardboard backing.

    • @maryellenslifehacks3042

If you don’t have a leaf blower…you could try a wet vacuum and put the hose in the exhaust, it may not have as much force but you could use the skinny attachment made for cracks.

You can buy a small cheap one for like $15
This is a stupid idea though. It’s just gonna make a big disgusting mess, and it won’t get to any parts that have been ground in for awhile, you have to use a small brush and loosen it off then vacuum.
