The random rolls you're getting in the turn are accelerated stalls. You can minimize them, and decrease your turn radius by using flaps. The flap extension speed for the first notch is 450 mph IIRC. If you go vertical or you're trying to get some energy back, get rid of them, but otherwise those are invaluable. I'll be honest: I have no idea how you figured out a guns solution on the fly for a F22. It flies faster than anything you'd ordinarily need to lead with those .50 cals, and the .50s need to lead more than the higher velocity 20mm. The fact that you put trigger down for about a second, watched the tracers, and found a guns solution is honesly kind of ridiculously incredible. Always remember guys, doesn't matter how old some planes are, a 50 cal is a 50 cal. Cross the nose at your own peril, because a P-51 probably absorbs that kind of damage about as well as any 5th gen jet.

Really not surprising, ww2 planes were true dogfighters. Lower speed and high maneuverability will win the day in the turning fight. Jets win with speed and in the vertical. Had I been in the F-22, I’d have just used that speed to dictate the fight. Dive in on a gun or missile run, take a shot, climb away out of reach, circle around above, spot, turn in, and dive down again. Repeat till dead. As pilots of old always said, speed is life. If you got a speed advantage, use it. Especially against a target with no missiles to shoot back.

If the Raptor pilot wanted to, I'm sure they could make it a no contest fight with missiles + vertical. But I think they wanted to try and make it interesting, and I respect that! I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the video as much if the Raptor pilot just went textbook and made all the objectively correct decisions! ^^

@@Wildeskraut really? How do you figure? Because in my mind, dog fighting ended with the perfection of missile technology. Fast forward to Korea in 1951-53 and the primary weapon for the F-86 and Mig-15 were still guns, no missiles, which meant they were still dog fighting in the skies. It really wasn’t until Vietnam where we saw missiles taking over in air-to-air kills.
Long story short, I fail to see how you can say dog fighting ended during ww2 when the technology that effectively ended most dogfights didn’t really become relevant until a couple decades after.

So basically if an F-22 flew through the Bermuda Triangle, got caught in a time warp and went back to 1946, the pilot suffered brain damage, and a P-51 happened to spot it while on patrol, this could happen.

It wasn't really that effective at all, tho. One was a maneuver kill kuz the Raptor pilot was obviously not taking it seriously, when he did take it seriously he just hit it with 9x's 20 seconds into the fight. He could've just did that every fight, but he clearly wanted it to be more interesting than that. Then he lost visual for so long the mustang was able to just get an easy kill on him.
