Paul Weller is a genius but so down to earth. Back in the mid 80’s my partner and I met both Paul & Mick at a Club called Xenon in Piccadilly and had a great chat with both of them. My partner got their autographs. By the way that same night we also met and had a chat with Freddie Mercury & George Michael. British artists are so approachable. Then only last summer I saw Paul get onto the Bakerloo Line with his guitar for a few stops and departed at Paddington. Love “Speak Like A Child” & “You’re The Best Thing”.

You're The Best Thing is a perfectly written song. I'm in love with a girl at work, Danielle. When I see her, I think of that song. Others at work see how we look at each other and should just get together already.

I've got to go with "My ever changing moods", this one hit an angst ridden teenager who was worried about life. How fitting a song title to sum up all those fears we all have. ❤🎉😂

It's difficult to exaggerate just how big the Jam were in the UK and he split them up when they were commercially at their peak. My memory of the Style Council was probably pretty much the same as every other British guy at the time, namely, "what is this shit, go back to the Jam", but, looking back now, Weller was right and we were wrong (maybe).
He's a fantastic songwriter, for me, the equal of Lennon/McCartney and Jagger/Richards. He writes very much about daily life and his environment and wrote Down in the Tube Station at Midnight when he was only 19. Saturdays Kids, or Eton Rifles are about as Anglo-centric as it gets, so you'll probably need Google handy for the references but well worth a marathon.
Finally, other 80's bands I used to listen to back then, Scritti Politti, Aztec Camera, The The and The Mighty Wah.

Live Aid, 1985 - they performed in front of 70,000 at Wembley. They were massive in the UK at that time.

British bands of the sixties dove into the blues. After the crest of the "New Wave" all the 80's British bands raided Motown and Stax for blue-eyed soul and adjacent soulful jazz.
I loved Style Council; The Jam had already been heading that direction (which contributed to their break-up). Paul Weller's songwriting became more sophisticated and (gasp) jazzy when he teamed up with keyboardist Mick Talbot from Dexy's Midnight Runners. For a short couple of years the Council were actively cool. Then jangly guitar Britpop started to take precedence, before the grunge and industrial backlash. Paul Weller continues to put out some great music to this day. I knew you'd dig this, because you guys have good taste. 😃

"You're the Best Thing" was absolutely massive in Britain and Europe for Paul Weller (ex-The Jam) and The Style Council... Absolutely brilliant and classic song. Weller is a brilliant vocalist -- probably the only one from the UK's punk era in the 70's.

Style Council was one of my band loves in my 20’s and I never see anyone react to them so this was fun. My Ever Changing Moods is my favorite of theirs. (I can’t tell you how much time I’ve spent on the dance floor dancing to this.) The first time I visited London I was heartbroken that I just missed the last show they played as a band. I have been able to see Paul Weller a few times in concert and he always puts on a great show, and always does some The Jam and Style Council songs, too. Thank you to the person that requested this! Also, Paul Weller has the nickname The Modfather of Soul. He’s the epitome of cool.

You guys haven't even scratched the surface of Paul Weller's phenomenal catalogue of music. So many amazing songs....try, "5th Season", "You do something to me" and "You're the best thing" as tasters, you'll not be disappointed. By the way, the backing vocalist/singer was Paul's partner, D C Lee....ironically, D C was also one of the original backing vocalist/singers with Wham.

Paul Weller is one of the best song writers to come out of Britain ever, and is still making great music. His influence, if limited only to the Jam, was profound. But he went on, developed, and made the Style Council, then a prolific solo career.

In case no-one's said it, the token female in the band is Paul's first wife* D C Lee** who had a couple of solo hits in the mid-'80s, but her finest moment may well be her lead vocal on the Style Council track The Gardner Of Eden.
Also, With Everything To Lose - a song about one of the more offensive and unhelpful state-sponsored so-called from-welfare-to-work schemes (periodically active from the '80s to the mid '10s) - was rewritten with new (blander) lyrics and thereby became their Gil Evans-assisted movie-score hit Have You Ever Had It Blue.
    (* jammy devil, pun intended!)
(* so called because her real name was Diane Sealey!)

Paul Weller, The Modfather, endures constant repeated listening from his early days with The Jam, The Style Council, and of course his amazing body of solo work. I cover tunes from all phases of his career on my gigs. Americans are fairly ignorant because his career has always been very concentrated in Great Britain, however that has not prevented me from seeing him live here in Seattle 4X over the decades.

You can get the concert on DVD, it was filmed at the Wembley Arena London , July 1985. Sell out of 10,000. They were a big band in the uk regularly hitting the top 10. My ever changing moods single was USA biggest hit , getting into the top 30. I don’t think they got enough AirPlay over the USA during 1983-89’. They were a big band in some European countries plus Japan and Australia .

Really love your marathon. It is really cool to hear your reactions to Pauls 2nd incarnation after The Jam and before his solo career. His song catalogue is true quality and enormous. Agree with a number of people around the piano version of My Ever Changing Moods. Truly amazing. Even more amazing that this pop song is based at least in part on nuclear bomb blast "the cool before the warm, the calm after the storm," - shown in the video for this song. Paul was always political animal , not willing to play the game. He could indeed have been super huge. He will in my eyes be the best songwriter of the last 45 years- still great music now

I'm a big fan of Paul Weller and his band The Style Coucil so I'm happy to see someone making a reaction video for this excellent but under recognized band. They only released 4 studio albums before Paul Weller went solo and went on to greater success. Today he is British Rock royalty. I'll definitely tune in if you decide to do any more videos for them. I'd love to see a reaction to their 'The Gardener of Eden' epic where they went symphonic with their music. Thanks for the video.

So glad you reacted to The Style Council. They're one of my fave bands. I grew up in the 80s. They're very eclectic. It was always strange to me to hear the juxtaposition of jazzy or latin music with socially conscious lyrics. I highly recommend You're the Best Thing, The Whole Point of No Return, Dropping Bombs on the White House, The Paris Match (Tracey Thorn vocal), It's a Very Deep Sea, Confessions of a Pop Group, and The Garden of Eden song suite. I also highly recommend the lead singer Paul Weller's solo work. I enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work.

Hey from Ned in Spain. Nice to see you diggin some Paul Weller and Style Council. Have you listened to any of his band The Jam ??? To us they were superior and amazing and part of the original wave of British Punk in 1976 / 77 with skinny suits and ties and high energy songs. Their music got more and more sophisticated as they went on then Weller broke them up around 1982 and started this band.

The first Style Council EP came out around 1983 and has the charming single “Speak like a Child” and my fave “The Long Hot Summer” which is blue eyed soul with a great funky bass line; they were more Stax/Motown 60s vibe than Doobies in my opinion - Paul Weller aka The Modfather tapped into those jazzy vibes through a great catalogue put out in a pretty short period relative to the rest of his career. Thanks for getting the Style Council on - you should check out his preceding band The Jam - very different.

I remember going 😳 "What do you mean Duran Duran is on a World Tour? 😱 Who headlining New Years?" 🤷🏿‍♀️ Could say the same about Billy Joel no longer playing Bar/Bat Mitzvahs or Springsteen no longer playing Juke Joints on the Jersey Shore! 😒 That's right I went to Juke Joints & put 25¢ in a Jukebox to hear 45's. 🤦🏿‍♀️ I feel sooooo old! 😂🤣😂🐰

I liked the Jam and the Style Council and it was nice to hear them again. However if you really want to hear what Paul Weller can do would recommend his Wild Wood release from 1995 to begin exploring his solo material. I can remember when I bought it and thought to myself this is what the latest Traffic release "Far From Home' should have sounded like. Very solid release all the way through and it had just a bit of that mysterious mystical Traffic vibe. Speaking of which you two really should explore some Traffic as well. Thanks for the fun 80's ride!

I am also glad that you are playing The Style Council. I have always been a huge fan of Paul Weller, right from The Jam, Style Council and his solo career. One song I hope you will react to is, from his "Stanley Road album, Broken Stones.

I'm a bit late to the party, but a great review, people. ! Paul Weller is probably the most well known and respected rock star in the UK since the 1970's. From his punk band The Jam, to the Style Council, to his solo output ever since the 1980's. Please review anything from The Jam, I guarantee you'll love it. It isn't just a noise, like most punk rock music.

I love the idea of comparing studio and live versions back to back. One track you should consider is Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years”, the original studio version really benefits from the treatment they gave it with the version on the “Alive in America” album.

I remember once I was listening to 'My Ever Changing Moods' before a rehearsal and a band mate came in and said "Why are you listening to that crap?". I replied, "What? It's not cool enough for you? Just pretend it's David Sylvian and he wanted to dance." We both laughed. He was only joking - sort of.
    Cheers guys 🤣👍🍁

So if you did not do it already you have to wind back Paul Weller’s career to the band ‘The Jam’. Much harder sound but delivered hit after hit in the last couple of years of the 70s and the first couple of the 80s

Also from this period of post-punk British neo-lounge, check out Sade, Brand New Heavies, Everything But The Girl and Haircut 100. Then veer into neo-Soul groove with Jamiroquai and then Trip Hop with Gorillaz! There is a many-branching rabbit hole you can go down with this.

The Style Council were the perfect segway from The Jam to Paul Weller's solo career, his solo work is some of the very best. You should check out songs like, Wild Wood, You Do Something To Me, Broken Stones, and Changing Man. But other great Style Council songs include, Your The Best Thing, Long Hot Summer, and Walls Come Tumberling Down.
