  • Create your own texture plates in brass, so you can use it on your rolling mill. By following this method you can create jewelry with your favorite and unique designs and patterns.
Step-by-step the whole process is explained; how to apply the photosensitive film, how to expose it and how to set-up the bath for electro-etching.

Thank you for such an informative, in-depth tutorial of your process Yvonne.
You cover everything so well that I'm sure I can follow along and create some beautiful results of my own.
I do have a couple of questions for you.
Is there a reason you've chosen the photographic paper and UV light route, rather than using a laser printed resist transferred from glossy paper by heat onto the metal, i.e. using a laminator, clothes iron or sandwich press? Is it because your method is more reliable, or you can get finer details with the photographic paper?
Do you have a link to where to buy this paper from and are all brands pretty much equal, or have you found one you prefer best of all?
Have you tried etching the actual metal to be made into jewellery, rather than making a texture plate?
Can the same basic process be applied to different metals, with the same or different etchants, i.e. etching silver and copper?
Lastly, what gauge/mm brass do you use and how many times can you put your plates through a mill before they less defined or degraded?
Does thicker brass last longer or cause any other issues to consider?
Thanks again Yvonne, for being so generous with your time in helping others learn how to add more beauty to the world.
If you have a link to your jewellery, I would love to see more and hopefully buy something if you do sell what you make.
I also hope you get many thousands of views on this video. It is one of the best I have ever seen and deserves to be more widely shared.
    Kind regards,
    David

      Thanks for your reply!
Why I use photographic film: it is easy to use and it does hold with the electro-etching technique very well. I tried thermal paper but I did not get a clean image and had to retouch all the time...Coral Shaffer advised it in her document (Relief Etching for Jewelers and Enamelists) as well!
Brand: I started with Puretch film, but it is expensive. and not available in small quantities. So I tried "Film voor PCB Circuit Productie Photoresist Sheet" (Amazon, 11 euro) and it works just fine. This is the film that is also used for circuit boards.
Texture for jewelry: No, if have not yet used a texture plate for my jewelry, but it is posible for sure!
Different metals: On the last slide in the film you can find information about other metals and etchants. I learned a lot by Coral Shaffer.
Thickness of the brass: I used 24 gauge. I use fine silver to make the impression and it is so soft that it does not damage the brass. If you close the rolling mill too far you can damage the brass plate. So I see no need to use thicker brass (and thinner is cheaper...)
My webiste is: www.emailleerkunst.nl/ (here you can see an etch used for the cricket box) For now it is in Dutch, but Google can translate it...
Thanks for your very kind words about my video. If I helped and inspired you, it was worth making it!

Very cool, I'm not at all artistic, I can draw a straight line, and not much else, but I like tinkering,

Thanks for a great video. Please may I ask where did you buy the copper sheet that you attached to the power supply or did you make that yourself? Also do you need some copper above the brass plate to make it work as it looks like there is some in the diagram but I didn’t see any in the video. Thanks in advance. I’m looking forward to trying this.

Hi, I made the copper sheet myself. It is inspired from the PDF "electro-etching for champlevé enamelling" from L.R.Jackson.
I attach the brass plate to this clip, using Vinyl sticker material.
I bend this clip over the edge of my container with the etch solution. (Bend first, then pour the etching solution)
For the plate on the bottom (cathode) I also use copper and bend en trim it to fit my container.
You must try some angles to get the best distance between the clip (anode) and the cathode. (I my case ½ inch or so)
      Good luck!

May I ask from what company you buy your photo film? ive done some etching, but haven't achieved such detail! it has to be a better film than Im using. Thank you, appreciate your sharing.

I bought it from amazon.nl. This is the product: 1×0.3m Photosensitive Dry Film, Portable Photosensitive Film For PCB Circuit Production Photoresist Sheet. If you apply it well, it holds well enough gives great detail. Good luck!

What do you use for the “sticker” to cover the back

where do you get the red clamps you tape on?

I made it myself. It is just a piece of brass, bended so it will fit the plastic container.

This may be a silly question- but can you use your etched brass plates on brass in the rolling mill?

    • @YvonneManders
      @YvonneManders  4 місяці тому

Not silly at all! You could use brass plates to make an impression on brass, but it is not ideal, because the plates are equally hard. If you use silver, the brass is harder than the silver so it will not wear out as much. So yes, it will be possible, but you can only make a few impressions.

Hi. Sorry, I can't help you. You can take a look at Etsy. Here I found MekkiSupplies who does make custom plates. Maybe there ar others too. And besides plates you can also order custom laser printed textures (paper).
