Nice video, especially the use of stickers! For the etching process, I tape a piece of styrofoam to the back of the piece so that it floats on the surface. Eliminates the need for the tape to suspend the metal.

I have been looking at doing some jewlery making, and buying one of these mills for it, though I am debating which mill to buy first. I am looking at doing something similar to this, but I am also looking at making other things like rings and chainmaille jewlery too. I plan to go only with the largest size mill to get the most out if it no matter what I am doing. However, if I get the combination mill, I have a wider variety of what I can do, I can use the D shaped wire section for making rings, other sections for making wire for chains, and the flat section for etching flat metal bracelets. The other option is to specialize and really optimize my ability to produce a specific item, for example, if I buy just the 130 mm flat roller then I have a wider area to use for etching a larger plate in one go, which I can then cut into several bracelets and then place them into a container to give them a chemical patina. This would have to be done one or two bracelets at a time on the combination roller because of the limited flat surface. The benefit of the combination roller is I can change things up based on what items I make end up being more popular amongst the people I make them for. But the drawback is that I cannot be optimized for producing those things with minimal time investment. The benefit of the flat mill is that I can do a high volume of a particular item for minimal time investment, but am much more limited in the variety of items I can make. Which would you recommend?

Couple of questions: How many rolls do you usually get from your brass plates (the ones you used stickers on)? I see you using card stock on one side in the mill. Can you help me understand what propose that serves, and why only on one side? I've been in studio workshops where they made us use extra pieces of metal (like you did the card stock) and on both sides. I didn't like using the metal for two reasons, wasting metal, and not as good result on pattern.
It depends on how hard you squeeze them in your Mill and how deep your etch is. Generally when i use 16g brass they last about 4 rolls on sterling silver and about 5 on fine silver. The cardstock just protects your rollers from extra scratches from the brass.
Hi Leslie , came across this video and thought I would give it a go ! I bought some mild Steel from my local metal smiths and it works fine but rusted afterwards . How do you prevent your plates from rusting ? I was thinking of using some of this steel in. Jewellery, as I see some people using steel. Do you know how they prevent it rusting? Thanks

Acutally i did use glossy paper for this design too . i made several of these plates with different transfers.I'm not a big fan of PNP but I had some already transfered. did a ton of etching that day!

I noticed that you didn’t make a card stock sandwich for your silver when reducing the gauge of the sheet. So it doesn’t damage the roller?

On the biggest brass piece with the deepest etch, did you use the laser printer method, or stickers, Leslie? I know that one wasn't the Stayz-on ink.
it was the made by using rubber stamp (same stamp i show you in the video) stamped on to pap
er then copied to PNP and heat transfered
