I remember when I was a kid my dad and uncle bought this game for me on the Playstation 2 and that night we all played it together taking turns and everything it was so fun. Eventually we get to the part where you protect the Chinese building the bridge from the Indians... This mission they give you the shotgun and as soon as I saw the Indin' my heart sank and I blasted him, he went flying and screaming generically.
We're Native Americans from Oklahoma and when I shot him my uncle was like "Gah your dad probably sung with that guy" lol we still loved the game and I played it so much the disc eventually stopped working, that being said my dad always referred to Gun as the Indin' killing game.

Damn. This got longer and more rambly than i expected. I also apologize for a lack of commas. The comma button on the laptop i am using right now is broken. At points i replace a comma with a "-"
Anyway here are a few thoughts i have about this - Depending on how much the group saw of the game it could be that they just didn't know any of the later stuff and only knew the bridge and stagecoach part.
Otherwise there are people who basically go "These people were treated badly so they are incapable of doing bad things themselves! And everyone who portrays them doing bad things - even if motivated by their mistreatment - is a racist!" Or "Sure. Most of the characters are well written and realistic. But it's not acceptable that you have random bands of enemies from that group even if there is a story explanation AND the group doesn't agree with what they do!"
Especially considering that the game was released in the 2000's and Video Games back then were even less main stream accepted by many than today. So I wouldn't be surprised if (even if htey saw the rest. of the story) they just went "Video Games aren't a serious medium like book s or movies! So this is not OK!"
Interest/representative groups especially might take an interesting in having a "squeaky clean" portrayal of what they (claim to) represent just because it makes it a lot easier to throw the weight around (and they might rile each other up. Echo chamber and all that) especially when THEY (even if there were others that could and were consulted) hadn't been asked about how the group should be portrayed. Even more so with a medium that isn't as accepted as other forms of Art (music literature and film) and as such has a rather bad standing with some of those groups - especially when headed by older/more conservative people. Even today with a higher acceptance of video games you sitll have the "Basement dwelling overweight socially incompetent Nerd" stereotype and back then - at least for certain people - that was even worse. Especially since "Video games are for kids! Sure the package says "Not for kids" but they are games afterall! And why would an adult waste time with video games?"
And since it's "For kids!" some groups might consider it even more of a "no-no".
Another cynical interpretation could've been "They never asked us so we're going to raise a stink!"
let me compare it to RDR - in 1 aside of Nastas the natives we meet are enemies with Dutch using their legitimate grievances to wage his personal war against civilization. Overall it actually makes sense from a story PoV. Those that show up are with Dutch. Nastas wants to stop them any many others probably just don't want to get involved.
However since this was the main portrayal of natives there was some criticism. This lead to RDR II having the Natives solely as the victims of Leviticus Cornwall and Army Colonel "High Tails" Favors wanting to earn a few laurels and get rid of his shame from the Civil War.
it suits the tone of Red Dead and the story and isn't that far off from stuff that happened IRL.
However I do kinda dislike the lengths that such portrayals can go to. As I said before - there are people who for one reason or another will consider any portrayal that isn't saintly and innocent as "racist". In regards of RDRII i think it could've been nice to have a few natives who weren't just portrayed as "underdog fighters who's grievances are completely justified!" and maybe some are just in it to get some plunder and blow of some steam and don't really care about any lofty goals. Or some splinter groups in a side quest who don't care about Cornwall and Favors but instead decided to take their revenge by indifferently attacking people who have nothing to do with either of them - like some of the outlying homesteads. (Though i think the Skinner Brothers gang in the post game has some native members)
It kinda reminds me right now of Fallout 3 (spending too much time reading fallout stuff on TV tropes currently) and the Tenpenny Tower quest. At first glance it is easy. You have. the rich assholes in the tower (who's owner IS evil) and the ghouls who'd like to live there. Bad and Good. You can convince the people to let the ghouls in - and then return a few days later to see that the Ghouls slaughtered the inhabitants anyway despite you negotiating them being allowed in.
Their leader is a racist ass himself. There is another quest ("The power of the atom") to blow up a settlement in viewing distance of the tower for the owner Mr. Tenpenny. When you let the Ghouls hin and their leader hears of that He agrees that "seeing that smoothskin shithole" blow up would be quite nice. Just because somebody is treated unfairly or even discriminated against means that that person is an innocent victim or right in what they do. Sometimes they are colossal assholes or monsters themselves. And they might hurt their own people just as much in the long run as those that are actively against them.
Yet - again as said before - if one side is/has to be portrayed as inherently innocent and good and everything bad they ever do is only reactionary and right it's far easier for interest groups etc. to push their own views on "what is right" in the portrayal onto devs etc. it allows them to push a the picture they want to portray.
And about the complaint that "Nobody would accept killing the irish etc." hah. As if anyone would care if in a game. Irish got shat on in the US And England during. the19th and 20th century. THey'd care about it just as much as when a game or movie portrays every german soldier in WW2 as die hard Nazi (Probably around 30 and all as battle hardened veterans). Probably not at all and heck a game in WWI might even port that portrayal back into the first World War.
Heck it reminds me of something from The Godfather. When Tom Hagen visits Jack Woltz in Hollywood.
Jack Woltz: "Now you listen to me, you smooth-talking son-of-a-bitch, let me lay it on the line for you and your boss, whoever he is! Johnny Fontane will never get that movie! I don't care how many dago guinea wop greaseball goombahs come out of the woodwork!"
      Tom Hagen: "I'm German-Irish."
Jack Woltz: "Well, let me tell you something, my kraut-mick friend, I'm gonna make so much trouble for you, you won t know what hit you!"
Woltz switches from slurs against italian-americans to anti-irish and german slurs in a heatbeat. Not that many people would really care about either.
Also about the crude language in the game in general - about women and chinese and so on - THE GAME TAKES PLACE IN THE 19th CENTURY FOR FUCKS SAKE! That kinda is like complaining that a story that has parts that take on a Antebellum Slave Plantation has derogatory language about blacks! Or would it make sense for them to call them "Our African-American employees"?
To be honest. I kinda wonder how i got to this from where i started with this post.

I think there's still enough interest and still enough nostalgia for this classic to earn itself a AAA sequel.
There's enough different tonality and world building that differentiates it from RDR2 in a way that shouldn't impact its sales or number of players in a significant way, especially with RDR2 being more than a few years old now and the multi-player player base quickly declining.
RDR2 creates entirely fictious worlds and towns that are loosely inspired by real world geographical locations, while Gun creates a world, towns, and even characters that are much more closely connected to real history. That fact alone gives the idea of a Gun sequel a wealth of interesting and exciting narrative opportunities based in inspired or alternative history.
Not to mention, a Gun sequel could very easily improve or develop gameplay and mechanics that feel entirely different from anything RDR2 provides. Imagine reloading revolvers in the middle of combat bullet-by-bullet with quick individual button presses, or a faction system that can impact the narrative like New Vegas.
There's plenty of things a developer could do to make Gun look, act, and feel entirely different from RDR2, Gun 1, or any other Western shooter for that matter, and I think its high time someone gets the ball rolling.
We want more epic western games with epic western stories.

RDR's characters are much more fleshed out and you get to know them better because you spend more time with them since the open world is much, much bigger and the mechanics are much more advanced in RDR. I wouldn't say the characters in Gun "suck" at all. Soapy is one of my favorite game characters ever and the reveal about Colton's past is top notch writing imo.
As much as it's understandable that Gun and RDR get compared all the time, I don't think it's fair. While RDR aims to achieve a gritty, realistic look on the old west, Gun draws it's inspirations more from classical western movies with John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, etc. where the Indians always were the enemy and the good guys always win at the end. Those were the movies I grew up with and I love Gun for giving me that experience. The character arc in both RDR games is a bit too depressing at the end for my liking.

I played the hell out of this game back in the day. Loved it and still do. I think that if NeverSoft had even half the budget and resources that RDR 1 and 2 had a Gun series could have been good competition for RDR. Thanks for the walk down memory lane bro. Might even try to Remake Colton in RDR Online. I'd be a good tribute to the game that really brought us the old west open world gameplay we have today.

I mean, both work. But one thing that gets me about guns sommeliers is how sensitive some of them can be. Luckily this UA-camr did his research well and got everything right (apparently), if not, we wouldn't be able to scroll down without finding comments treating it as some minor war crime or something.
Ofc it's a minority and every hobby/fanbase has its ugly ducklings, but knowing about guns is such a meaningless thing to so many people that vast majority wouldn't care if this UA-camr messed up the gun models he mentioned. We would still understand the video and it wouldn't change anything, but to some, a small 2 sec mistake would be enough to make the whole 40 minute video look bad.
Still, I'm glad this UA-camr does his research well. And knowing the people working at Gun properly replicated these real life guns really make me appreciate the game even more.

All the Woketards would blow a gasket because the game depicts the indians as the brutal savages they were, not the modern "they were noble savages who loved nature and were murdered by the evil white men"-revisionist history crap.
Same with a sequel. If it was made today, it would be even more woke and cleansed than RDR2 already was. I don't think anybody want that.
Gun was great because it was like the Spaghetti Westerns compared to RDR being more like american western movies. It was gritty, realistic, brutal and didn't pull shots.

Hollister and his renegades were a pretty cool idea for Gun's setting. They kinda remind me a lot of the Lemoyne Raiders from RDR2, if they were more savage and feral. And Hollister was just downright intimidating in his first scene, from his voice, to his design, to the music and even camera angles when he approached Colton and Soapy. I just kinda wished we saw more of him so he'd really live up to his frightening presence. And he really could have, because this game despite being a 2005 game, it's a surprisngly violent and gory game

Yes also some Native american tribes were violent in actual history, though as the game shows throughout the story, they were just fighting back a more evil force, I don't know how anyone could be entirely mad about it because throughout the last parts of the game, you team up with the natives to kill a mega-capitalistic white man, also Colton is half native American, also in the story you save a whole truck car of them, and free many from a slaver camp, and kill the prison guards with them as well
