The thing about GTA:VC is that it was pretty much the one game that finally made the rest of the corporate world understand how big of a deal this whole 'gaming' thing actually was in terms of dollar signs. It was so influential that it actually brought about the whole "80s retro" craze of the early 2000s and suddenly mainstream radio stations everywhere were playing Tears for Fears again. This was really noticeable when GTA4 rolled around because, by that time, the record companies had cottoned on to the fact that there was a lot of money to be made and were now charging top dollar for the rights to any of their music, meaning Rockstar had to settle for a soundtrack with much less star power.
I don't know what 80s craze you talk about. By 2000 half didn't care for ANY style or setting while trends were mainly modern, there was nothing from 80s left, people finally abandoning actual 80s leftovers like the flashy crazy colored tracksuits and pastel and finally going through 90s styles and right into 2000+ modern stuff. Everything was sci-fi futuristic space themed either brushed aluminum and pop styles mixed together. People either wore baggy clothing or suits that looked like they are business people but the skirts were short and pants had more pockets, overall casual clothing. When you look at what mainstream was there was nothing 80s at all about it. In old GTA games we didn't care for the styles but rather the story and gameplays and it happened that it managed to cover styles only because it basically "stole" everything from old movies really. Speaking of gameplay and stories which today's games have none of it. Everything is what we already seen for decades copy-pasted and packed into a agenda called "pretty graphics" everything online locked and milked dry. The 80s styles, audio tapes, vinyl records etc are only a recent comeback, maybe 5 to 10 years tops. Still it's minority. There is more 80s style NOW then late 90s. By 2000s there was nothing and Vice City didn't changed on that. I would say that GTA6 is way too late by a decade AGAIN, because now it's more popular the 90s and 00s, Y2K and Japanese pop styles. The only place you will find the 80s are in a dumpster. So there is zero trend chase here or they like I said failed by a decade.
@@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy at my college, 80's night parties were quite popular during the 00's.,as were nü metal and pop punk covers of 80's hits.
@CopiousDoinksLLC corporate interest in gaming industry is the worst thing that could ever happened. Games of early 00s were still made with passion which is not the case anymore. Suits in high places are the reason we have unfinished games on the release and political messages in them
The fact that the video didn’t seem like it was 1 hour and 20 minutes long while I was watching speaks volumes about its compelling content and thorough research. Excellent work, mate!
20 years ago in 2004 me and my brother were playing GTA VICE CITY on our brand new desktop computer. Since then I love this game and whole GTA franchise. Still feel Nostalgic about this game 20 years later. One more thing My Brother completed all the missions i use to play to create fun and chaos in the game. My age was 14 in 2004.
I won't forget the first time i went to gamestop with my dad to buy vice city, me and my little brother used to take turns completing missions and we had a small note pad with cheats we wrote down, the soundtrack was great.
The release date was crazy. I remember buying a PS2 in mid 2002 just to play GTA 3 and to finally have a DVD player but then seeing the poster for Vice City in the game store. I remember thinking to myself, wow, they have another one coming out already?
Wild how Rockstar’s storytelling went from getting the job done to legitimately great in a single entry. And yes, keep the long deep dive videos coming. You do them so well.
Not only was GTA:SA with deeper references. 5 has so many and self references that it would take someone days to untangle. It is crazy to me how they kept it all coherent with how much 5 has. 4 is also crazy to dig through, also my favourite GTA despite the technical flaws.
VC was really ahead of the curve when it came to 80's Nostalgia, as it launched before that aesthetic became very mainstream and overdone as it felt like a loveletter to the era the devs grew up in. Also worth noting how influential Scarface was, because when it got it's own game in 2006 it was accused of being a Vice City clone lol Hope you cover it and it's weird poker game advertisements!
Vice City is one of my favorite Rockstar games ever. Set in the 80s, with the inspiration of Scarface and voiced by the late Ray Liotta from Goodfellas. What's not to like in this game. Now GTA 6 is set in modern Vice City. Hope they bring some references, or hidden Easters from past Vice City.
I think this was the right amount of time for a video covering a game like Vice City. Went over all the key plot elements and characters along with highlighting some noteworthy side content. This would be a perfect format for a future San Andreas video.
Burt Reynolds was a good actor. The famous Bandit. He was also an old-school man, born in 1936, and didn't believe in all these computer games. He probably got into the recording session through an agent. For him, being so famous, it was like appearing in an advertisement for some car dealership. He didn't realize the power of computer games. But our parents' generation reacted to games in a similar way. Even today, people over 60 use computers or smartphones mainly for messenger or Facebook, rather than gaming. And Burt would be 88 now. It was a different generation.
Diaz always reminded me of Tony especially his outfit stature and hot headedness ironically though Diaz is Colombian while Tony is Cuban and Tony claims he doesn’t like Colombians
The impact of vice city is still going strong coming 22years later. There's a grouo from down south in ireland that tour with a great playlist from the game, came to belfast last year and the place was packed out, we're all wearing hawian shirts and the band were unreal, setting the vibe with the vice city opening theme then hitting us with the songs.
I just finished marathoning all seasons of Miami Vice. It's amazing just how much of Vice City -- from mission storylines, to aesthetics, to individual character designs and even building interiors are directly lifted from the show. I mean even aside of the more obvious, on-the-nose references like the pair of undercover cops who show up in the VC version of the iconic white Testarossa. It's a good thing.
a decade+ too late ... oh well you kids enjoy it whatever there is left to be enjoyed in these copy-pasted cashgrabs full of toxic characters and online "players" / "gamers"
Hardest mission in the game in my opinion. I had an easier time doing boat ramp jumps. Guy was completely worthless and irrelevant. The “driver” didn’t even drive you to the heist lol.
Within 7 years we got GTA 3, VC, SA, VC stories, LC stories, and GTA 4.. it’s been over a decade since 5, hopefully they’ve been working on it longer than we know
setting was brilliant... radio station were epic also the atmosphere in general... you can see all the references even if you didnt watch the movies, u just knew
I very rarely comment, but thank you for this video, it was my favourite game when I first rented it as a kid and later took 20 euro i got for easter and walked 45m to a shop and found the last and only ps2 copy. I have great memories, and it was great to relive them here, I had forgotten some of these. Awesome work, I subscribed. Thank you.
it wasnt until a few days ago that I found out Cam can die in the heist even Phil has something to say about "shame about Cam , good guy" Tommy "yeah but at least we got more money!" or something like that...weird
I'm from New Zealand and some of the music featured on this and Vice City Stories gets a lot of play on our own local radio station, called The Breeze. While it's marketed as Easy Listening, it plays a lot of popular songs through the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s and some current music releases. Admittedly, I never really paid attention to the music from these games until reading the list of radio stations pages on the FANDOM website and recognizing the songs that are used in these games from listening to The Breeze
The longer the better (that's what she said) I personally like when creators go in depth on the topics they cover. Especially when it comes to games. I usually put them on while driving to work (listen to them not watch lol) or when I'm just chilling. Ive never been able to take titles like "A complete look at ..." or "the history of ... " seriously when you glance over and see the video length is like 10 - 20 minutes. Of course the amount of available information is going to play a role as well, no point in an hour plus video if there's only 15 minutes of information padded out. Like the way you paced this video , just about perfect IMO. Gonna hit the subscribe and check out your back catalogue
Hey thanks man! I've come across some longer videos that are a lot of fluff and it kinda turned me off to making longer ones myself. But with a game that has an much content as vice City I could easily have added another 30 minutes of content, but I tried to keep it relatively concise haha. Glad you liked it, appreciate it dude
Dude!! Thank you so much for the nostalgic trip! This was the first GTA I've ever played, back when I still had to buy pirate CDs from street vendors in Brazil. Rough, but good times! I'd love to play the game again some time, but going down memory lane through the story with your video, in the little free time I have nowadays, really helped scratch that itch. Cheers!
That awesome video man You should've mention of Tommy yells at Lance which makes Lance reminded him of his brother, Vic after saying that people patronized him all in his life and says his brother would do that(Vice City Stories shows Lance's man child personality as he caused problems for Vic)
Honestly i think gta VI will be much more than the vibe of gta vice city. Like RDR2 we were just expecting another western, and then all over a sudden we are on a city built by french people, soundtrack with accordions dealing with the mafia on our way and then we are in cuba all of a sudden.... i think it will be a tale from florida to parts of georgia.
It makes sense why Avery Carrington (Bert Reynolds) was killed off in such an anticlimactic way in GTA LCS, and then eaten by Donald Love. It was personal apparently 😂
After all he was The Bandit, a pop culture icon of the 70/80s. Probably he just didn't believe in computer games [born in 1936], but it was still nice to hear his voice in Avery's role. What I like about Vice City is that the characters look like their voice actors. Tommy Vercetti - Ray Liotta, Umberto Robina - Danny Trejo, Candy Suxxx - Jenna Jameson, Philip Thomas - Lance Vance, Burt Reynolds - Avery, a rich Texan in a hat. Graphics in the early 2000s weren't perfect. But still we can better imagine what the creators had in mind and what the characters really looked like. For me, Umberto is Danny Trejo and Avery is Burt Reynolds. Those roles seemed to have been written for them.
I like the longer videos and your narration makes it easy to listen to it without having to actually watch it I can just put my earbuds in And be at work good video man!
Having your own radio station where you could play mp3s was an awesome option, i remember listening to music driving around town collecting money from my properties
I just recently went through this games story for the first time and man I can see now why this game is so beloved to so many people. Not only gta fans even some who just grew up with this game either playing their parents copy or older siblings copy they brought to show and tell haha. That being said there is still plenty of jank in this game where it feels the games against you at times. I think the best asset mission is completing all car lists and getting Hillary’s car and the race car with 9k revenue. Awesome vid dude so glad it’s here I hope you have the energy for more long vids like this. Now….sanadreas in the future? 😏
I always liked sunshine autos too, felt like I was in gone in 60 seconds just going down the list, and the car rewards are super cool. If I can get my steam copy of San Andreas running we'll be good, otherwise I'll have to dust off the ol PS2 and get some recording hardware haha or emulator I suppose
@@MrHammers now you have to have a shot of you blowing literal dust off the ps2, cough like crazy then do the shot of sticking the disc in the ps2 giving it that classic feel. Then it doesn’t work so you just get an emulator running in seconds 😂
I remember taking acid one night and going in on a marathon session playing this, that very night once the walls started breathing, I stumbled upon the 'trailer mode' in the video options....it was something special that night tbh - it became one of those core memories :)
Fantastic video. When I got my PS2 back in 2003 I was absolutely obsessed with this game. The story, characters, setting & music is perfect. It’s left a massive mark and influence on my game and music tastes. I can’t tell you how many times I have completed it over the years
Vice City was such an amazing lightning in a bottle. The radios were amazing. The main theme was amazing. The 80s feel literally working through the storyline made me fall in love with American Dream.
I think this is the first video ive seen from you but i really enjoyed the long form deep dive. There are so many 10-15 minute videos out there and they rarely manage to capture much of the actual gameplay or smaller details.
*Fun facts about Vice City : It seems that the Forellis are the 3D era Gambinos ,so Sonny is the 3Ds Gotti , although I can't be 100% sure that the Gambinos were the 1st Italian - US crime organization in Miami ,* *Tommy's based on the aforementioned: Tony and Joseph however there's also a possibility that Jon Roberts (born John Riccobono) that was a Gambino soldier , was also taken as an inspiration to the creation of Tommy, while the original Vercetti's appearance was reminiscent of Ray Liotta , the Definitive Edition bears more similarity to Vincent Gigante who was the boss of the Genovese crime family on the other hand* *Upon further investigating the Gambinos and Florida , I found out another pallarel 'tween Tommy and Joseph Armone this time, as Gotti have sent 'em in '86 to Florida in order to supervise the Gambinos interests in there*

I always bring up Carlito's Way when I talk about this game, the lawyer is basically the same guy from the movie. Underrated movie as well, great video. You really go in depth to a game that was, at one time, the only thing worth playing
Literally speed running this game. This game just takes me back. Especially the music. This is also considered the most expensive GTA at the time for just the voice actors alone. Wild times to throw around money.
I have to say a huge thank you for this detailed video! It was really fun and the nostalgia couldn't be greater. When Vice City came out, I was only 6 years old. I think I played through Vice City completely when I was 9 or 10 and was hooked on the game. @@dhlhthriwdhskissos9606 yea i also agree gameplay wise but also character wise, i mean its great being Tommy and his rise to power but Victor is more sympathetic thats why i like him more (it does help the fact that he has to deal with Lance bullshit even longer then tommy and them being bros is the reason why Victor haven't cap him), i mean rockstar even improve on their character with GTA4 with Niko & Louis (maybe even Johnny but uhhh.. Hell yeah. Unwinding after work to this video. Classic game that never gets old. Im actually painting some of the weapons icons because they are so dope and legendary.

Long videos are great when the topic calls for it. Classics like Vice City call for it.
The fact that the video didn’t seem like it was 1 hour and 20 minutes long while I was watching speaks volumes about its compelling content and thorough research. Excellent work, mate!
That's a very kind compliment! Thanks so much
20 years ago in 2004 me and my brother were playing GTA VICE CITY on our brand new desktop computer.
Yes loved the 80s soundtrack mostly the rock stations
The first time? How many times did your dad take you and your other under-aged brother to the store to buy that game?

The reason that you can "unlock" new islands in gta3, vice city or san andreas, is that it gives you a sense of progression in game.
:O
Or after you’ve played a while “okay unlocked the third island game is almost over” 😂
The love I have for this game is actually insane, a lot of my happy memories from my childhood is thanks to this game, easily my favorite GTA
They stepped up their writing exponentially it's crazy, then San Andreas was Even deeper
I love Vice City, I’m one of the few that thinks it’s a much better game than San Andreas.

Completely agree
Yup
Totally
Both amazing but I definitely agree with you
Cruising down the sunset on my chopper, listening to "Broken Wings"... One of my fondest memories..
I graduated high school in 02 and pretty much all I remember of my freshman year of college is playing this game the whole time
I think this was the right amount of time for a video covering a game like Vice City.
Burt knew about video games.
He went on to play the mayor in Saints Row 3 years later.
Taxi cab lady is the lead singer from blondie herself if I recall correctly!

Vice City is where GTA truly found its stride for me.
That's why some called it a "Tribute" instead of a standalone back in the day.
Vice City is a Beautiful Game and i am so happy we are going to be Expirence it in GTA VI in The HD Era it's going to be so Great❤
I'm stoked for it, the trailer is so sick
a decade+ too late ... oh well you kids enjoy it whatever there is left to be enjoyed in these copy-pasted cashgrabs full of toxic characters and online "players" / "gamers"
As a kid I could never beat Hilary in that street race unless he crashed or if I got him bugged out on some environment.
It took me 3 tries, Hilary is a good driver confirmed haha
I hate that race because it's rigged: no matter if I'm ahead or I let Hilary be ahead, the cop cars always aim to crash on me.
Hardest mission in the game in my opinion. I had an easier time doing boat ramp jumps. Guy was completely worthless and irrelevant. The “driver” didn’t even drive you to the heist lol.

The longer the better (that's what she said)
I personally like when creators go in depth on the topics they cover.
Cheers!
Thanks for the kind words my friend! Glad you liked the video dude
I swear Lance Vance is just Kanye in the 80s.
Love the longer deep dives into these games. Always love forward to them.
Thanks my man!
That awesome video man
You should've mention of Tommy yells at Lance which makes Lance reminded him of his brother, Vic after saying that people patronized him all in his life and says his brother would do that(Vice City Stories shows Lance's man child personality as he caused problems for Vic)
One of the greatest video games ever and one of the greatest cultural achievements of this century.
My first GTA🥲

Not only gta fans even some who just grew up with this game either playing their parents copy or older siblings copy they brought to show and tell haha. *Fun facts about Vice City : It seems that the Forellis are the 3D era Gambinos ,so Sonny is the 3Ds Gotti , although I can't be 100% sure that the Gambinos were the 1st Italian - US crime organization in Miami ,*
*Tommy's based on the aforementioned: Tony and Joseph however there's also a possibility that Jon Roberts (born John Riccobono) that was a Gambino soldier , was also taken as an inspiration to the creation of Tommy, while the original Vercetti's appearance was reminiscent of Ray Liotta , the Definitive Edition bears more similarity to Vincent Gigante who was the boss of the Genovese crime family on the other hand*
*Upon further investigating the Gambinos and Florida , I found out another pallarel 'tween Tommy and Joseph Armone this time, as Gotti have sent 'em in '86 to Florida in order to supervise the Gambinos interests in there*
Very interesting there! The story of Joseph Ianuzzi is also related to the Gambino family, so I think your analysis holds some weight
