- Rockstar's second stab at creating a 3D universe with Grand Theft Auto. After telling Claude's tale in Liberty City in the 2000s, it's time to head down to Vice City in the 1980's to follow the tale of Tommy Vercetti and his rise to power against all opposition.

Truly my favorite gta setting ever.
GTA VI should be dope
@@MrHammers well it's set in current era so don't expect the same vibe
Isn't it great just hearing about a game you enjoyed a lot as a kid so much time later ❤️.
@@MrHammers
Maybe
The only GTA I completed 99%. I have searched every hidden pack spot 5 times (the last 1% is ONE pack that must have bugged out..)
Two things
1) Tommys nameless cronies are named Harry and Lee. Tommy says their names when telling Sonny what happened at the deal
2) Tommy not being able to swim makes sense in universe. Alot of people from cities like NYC dont know how to swim. It surprises me to this day how many adults dont know or never learned how to swim. Plus being in prison for 15 years probably didnt help. I doubt Tommy ever went to the pool or beach to swim growing up in the 50s and 60s in Liberty City when he had been doing crimes or working at his father's print shop as a kid
1. I had no idea, I'll have to watch that cutscenes back.. after all these years I never heard that lol
2. I suppose that makes sense, I wish that'd be mentioned in passing or something in the game. But I suppose head Canon works for something like that
@@MrHammersthe scene in beginning theres a body in the freezer if u listen close I just died in your arms is playing in the background
@@MrHammers While we're at it, this video really didn't need to be over an hour long. You could've cut everything from 15:37 to 1:13:34, as it's just you recapping the story beat by beat, and it honestly feels like you're padding the runtime. It's a good retrospect video and it would've done its job in 20 minutes.
@Gyrbae covering the story is what I do in every video on games I cover. Lots of people like to recap games they haven't played in decades
@@Gyrbae clown comment
Vice City has will and always be my favourite GTA. The 80s setting, the music, The Hollywood Voice cast.
I was 13 when this game was released and I owned it on day one.
That was 22 YEARS ago !!!
Damn I feel old 😂
I was born in 83 and I remember a lot of 80's music from my childhood so VC is also my favourite GTA.
The best GTA soundtrack to me
I think it’s time for the “Total Overdose is absolutely insane” video Mr. Hammers.
Oh yeah that game is amazing!
Sounds good to me 🙂
Total overdose was awesome
I take it you watch fuzzy slippers?
Yes!!!!! Thank you!!!
Leo is a reference to Leon the Professional. Also, easiest way to win the races is to just blow up the other vehicles before the race begins. The era of being able to spend 1000 hours in this game will be sorely missed. It's such a classic. Thanks for making this video.
Huh, I didn't put the Leon reference together. Neat! Thanks man
If someone re-released this game with zero changes apart from ragdolling on corpses, I'd pay full price for it all over again.
This game doesn’t even have enough content to warrant 1,000 hours. Wdym
@ChangedMan2.0 it's called playing the game over and over again, 100% it multiple times, or finding some rooftop to blow stuff up from while trying to see how long you could survive the cops, or using the riot code to play like you were in a zombie apocalypse, or literally just driving around the map listening to music for hours. Lol you youngins really missed out on an era. Pssh, "content." Everything's gotta be curated and on rails for you I guess.
I didn't realize this video is so new. Vice City was my first GTA, and as timeless as San Andreas is, Vice City will always have a place in my heart
Fresh off the printers lol
Gta3 was disappointing if you played Vice City first lol

Allegedly, the Housers offered Ray Liotta two options to be compensated for his work. He could be paid up front, or receive payment based on sales, (better idea).
The Housers stressed to Ray what a big deal the game was gonna be, insisting the second option made more sense, but he wasn’t hearing it.
Liotta accepted payment up front, and only realized the mistake he made once the game sold like crazy.
Supposedly, he made it known to Rockstar he wasn’t happy with the deal, and they responded along the lines of, “we tried telling you dude.”
Take this with a grain of salt, but this was what I read years ago pertaining to why Liotta and Rockstar hadn’t been on good terms since then.
That makes a lot of sense then if they offered it and he turned it down. Can definitely see why he'd be upset over that, but he didn't take the percentage risk so he got what he signed up for.
Where did you read this?
@@MAXBERTE
It’s been over 10 years, minimum, so I can’t remember. As I said, take it with a grain of salt.
It's also important to note that videogames as media weren't treated as important as cinema or television back then (not that long ago, really), so many actors never through that games could make so much money and success.
@@TKsh1
Yea, that was definitely Ray’s thinking,
(who by most accounts is a decent guy).
Hiring the Bikers to work as security on that Lovefist concert is actually a reference when the Rolling Stones did the same thing. It didn't end well.
Context?
(From Wikipedia)
Meredith Curly Hunter Jr. (October 24, 1951 - December 6, 1969) was an American man who was killed at the 1969 Altamont Free Concert. During the performance by the Rolling Stones, Hunter approached the stage, and was driven off by members of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club who were providing security and had agreed to prevent members of the audience from mounting the stage. He subsequently returned to the stage area, drew a revolver, and was stabbed and beaten to death by Hells Angel Alan Passaro.
@@schuhbackad1146Honestly? That sounds like the bikers did their job.
@@schuhbackad1146 That's it? Well deserved. The Hell's Angels are based in this instance.
@@schuhbackad1146 Also they got paid in beer and they we're recommened by Grateful dead and Jefferson airplane.
This game changed my life and introduced me to 80's music. I think I was 12 when I got this for Xmas. Am 34 next month 😮
"this is the last dance for Lance Vance."... bro
Tommy is an action figure in Zero's store in San Fierro in San Andreas;-)
so is piggsy and cash from manhunt
Also lance
So the two potheads at the docks are Wayne and Jethro that we see again in GTA: SA.
Must've been a hell of an adventure they went on with The Truth after leaving VC.
Dwaine* and Jethro
@@MrHammers Right lol
Loved the video! Your content is always fantastic dude!
Haha thanks my man
Long videos are great when the topic calls for it. Classics like Vice City call for it.
The love I have for this game is actually insane, a lot of my happy memories from my childhood is thanks to this game, easily my favorite GTA
Wild how Rockstar’s storytelling went from getting the job done to legitimately great in a single entry.
And yes, keep the long deep dive videos coming. You do them so well.
They stepped up their writing exponentially it's crazy, then San Andreas was Even deeper
VC was really ahead of the curve when it came to 80's Nostalgia, as it launched before that aesthetic became very mainstream and overdone as it felt like a loveletter to the era the devs grew up in.
Also worth noting how influential Scarface was, because when it got it's own game in 2006 it was accused of being a Vice City clone lol Hope you cover it and it's weird poker game advertisements!
I won't forget the first time i went to gamestop with my dad to buy vice city, me and my little brother used to take turns completing missions and we had a small note pad with cheats we wrote down, the soundtrack was great.
Yes loved the 80s soundtrack mostly the rock stations
The first time? How many times did your dad take you and your other under-aged brother to the store to buy that game?
@@mrbojangles1391 he means the first time his dad brought him to buy a game but in this case was gta vice city he just worded it off

20 years ago in 2004 me and my brother were playing GTA VICE CITY on our brand new desktop computer. Since then I love this game and whole GTA franchise. Still feel Nostalgic about this game 20 years later. One more thing My Brother completed all the missions i use to play to create fun and chaos in the game. My age was 14 in 2004.
The thing about GTA:VC is that it was pretty much the one game that finally made the rest of the corporate world understand how big of a deal this whole 'gaming' thing actually was in terms of dollar signs. It was so influential that it actually brought about the whole "80s retro" craze of the early 2000s and suddenly mainstream radio stations everywhere were playing Tears for Fears again.
This was really noticeable when GTA4 rolled around because, by that time, the record companies had cottoned on to the fact that there was a lot of money to be made and were now charging top dollar for the rights to any of their music, meaning Rockstar had to settle for a soundtrack with much less star power.
I don't know what 80s craze you talk about. By 2000 half didn't care for ANY style or setting while trends were mainly modern, there was nothing from 80s left, people finally abandoning actual 80s leftovers like the flashy crazy colored tracksuits and pastel and finally going through 90s styles and right into 2000+ modern stuff. Everything was sci-fi futuristic space themed either brushed aluminum and pop styles mixed together.
People either wore baggy clothing or suits that looked like they are business people but the skirts were short and pants had more pockets, overall casual clothing. When you look at what mainstream was there was nothing 80s at all about it.
In old GTA games we didn't care for the styles but rather the story and gameplays and it happened that it managed to cover styles only because it basically "stole" everything from old movies really. Speaking of gameplay and stories which today's games have none of it. Everything is what we already seen for decades copy-pasted and packed into a agenda called "pretty graphics" everything online locked and milked dry.
The 80s styles, audio tapes, vinyl records etc are only a recent comeback, maybe 5 to 10 years tops. Still it's minority. There is more 80s style NOW then late 90s. By 2000s there was nothing and Vice City didn't changed on that.
I would say that GTA6 is way too late by a decade AGAIN, because now it's more popular the 90s and 00s, Y2K and Japanese pop styles. The only place you will find the 80s are in a dumpster. So there is zero trend chase here or they like I said failed by a decade.
@@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy at my college, 80's night parties were quite popular during the 00's.,as were nü metal and pop punk covers of 80's hits.
I'm turning 40 this year, I was completely in the key demographic when VC came out, and I remember my friend and I playing this game to death when it came out. Our first 100% play through took 24hrs 12minites!! We took notes on it, and our next play through more than halved that time.
Vice City is my all time favourite game, whilst there are flaws to the game, but to me, it's perfection.
Vice City is one of my favorite Rockstar games ever. Set in the 80s, with the inspiration of Scarface and voiced by the late Ray Liotta from Goodfellas. What's not to like in this game.
Now GTA 6 is set in modern Vice City. Hope they bring some references, or hidden Easters from past Vice City.
Having your own radio station where you could play mp3s was an awesome option, i remember listening to music driving around town collecting money from my properties
Holy shit he finally reviewed the game where he got his pfp from
Long time coming lol
I always think of this game when I look at the profile pic, now I see it is purposeful lol.

I love the early 80s vibe, but the horrible mechanics are pretty unbearable for a ton of missions. Stopped playing about halfway through.

i was replaying this game in 2005 and my mother who i was estranged to at the time contacted me over msn messenger. it turned out she was living in Miami, FL. she jokingly told me i should move there. so i did. on my way to the airport it was cold, about to rain, foggy and the song "hello" by lionel richie played. when i got to miami there was 0 clouds in the sky. we went out to eat then went to a mall. then they took me to see a little bit of downtown miami. i drove by the sun setting on downtown miami as all night long" by lionel richie played.
down here my health improved. i was able to move on from past trauma, made new freinds, found love and im the happiest ive been since ever and all of it was cause of vice city

Really awesome video by the way. Certainly got a new fan.
@Ziggy_Rotten thanks dude! Appreciate that
Please keep doing the long videos like this. I’ve enjoyed digesting this one during my commute the past couple days.
Diaz always reminded me of Tony especially his outfit stature and hot headedness ironically though Diaz is Colombian while Tony is Cuban and Tony claims he doesn’t like Colombians
As a kid I could never beat Hilary in that street race unless he crashed or if I got him bugged out on some environment.
It took me 3 tries, Hilary is a good driver confirmed haha
Vice City is a Beautiful Game and i am so happy we are going to be Expirence it in GTA VI in The HD Era it's going to be so Great❤
I'm stoked for it, the trailer is so sick
a decade+ too late ... oh well you kids enjoy it whatever there is left to be enjoyed in these copy-pasted cashgrabs full of toxic characters and online "players" / "gamers"
The reason that you can "unlock" new islands in gta3, vice city or san andreas, is that it gives you a sense of progression in game.
I just finished marathoning all seasons of Miami Vice. It's amazing just how much of Vice City -- from mission storylines, to aesthetics, to individual character designs and even building interiors are directly lifted from the show. I mean even aside of the more obvious, on-the-nose references like the pair of undercover cops who show up in the VC version of the iconic white Testarossa. It's a good thing.
I graduated high school in 02 and pretty much all I remember of my freshman year of college is playing this game the whole time
I absolutely love video game essays
As someone who works from home, longer videos are a blessing.
Love the long format videos , keep up the good work
Within 7 years we got GTA 3, VC, SA, VC stories, LC stories, and GTA 4.. it’s been over a decade since 5, hopefully they’ve been working on it longer than we know
It makes sense why Avery Carrington (Bert Reynolds) was killed off in such an anticlimactic way in GTA LCS, and then eaten by Donald Love. It was personal apparently 😂
PS2 version of this game is the best and always will be.
orange haze
I like the longer videos and your narration makes it easy to listen to it without having to actually watch it I can just put my earbuds in
And be at work good video man!

One of the greatest video games ever and one of the greatest cultural achievements of this century.
Love the longer deep dives into these games. Always love forward to them.

I think this was the right amount of time for a video covering a game like Vice City. Went over all the key plot elements and characters along with highlighting some noteworthy side content.
This would be a perfect format for a future San Andreas video.
Yessss👏🏻👏🏻 10/10 video man! Loved it
I loved this game, I have played it on and off for 15 years and vice city continues to feel like one of the most alive video games i have ever played.
I very rarely comment, but thank you for this video, it was my favourite game when I first rented it as a kid and later took 20 euro i got for easter and walked 45m to a shop and found the last and only ps2 copy. I have great memories, and it was great to relive them here, I had forgotten some of these. Awesome work, I subscribed. Thank you.

Same i remeber going to my cousin and friends house to watch them play gta vice city i didnt have laptop then man good old times
that was awesome bro thanks again for the great content!
Appreciate ya dude!
The longer the better (that's what she said)
I personally like when creators go in depth on the topics they cover. Especially when it comes to games.
I usually put them on while driving to work (listen to them not watch lol) or when I'm just chilling.
Ive never been able to take titles like "A complete look at ..." or "the history of ... " seriously when you glance over and see the video length is like 10 - 20 minutes.
Of course the amount of available information is going to play a role as well, no point in an hour plus video if there's only 15 minutes of information padded out.
Like the way you paced this video , just about perfect IMO.
Gonna hit the subscribe and check out your back catalogue
Hey thanks man! I've come across some longer videos that are a lot of fluff and it kinda turned me off to making longer ones myself. But with a game that has an much content as vice City I could easily have added another 30 minutes of content, but I tried to keep it relatively concise haha. Glad you liked it, appreciate it dude
Just wanted to say I’ve been watching your channel since 10k and you’ve been big inspiration to me keep up the good work mr hammers
Thank you my man. Appreciate the long haul support!
Honestly i think gta VI will be much more than the vibe of gta vice city. Like RDR2 we were just expecting another western, and then all over a sudden we are on a city built by french people, soundtrack with accordions dealing with the mafia on our way and then we are in cuba all of a sudden.... i think it will be a tale from florida to parts of georgia.
Dude!! Thank you so much for the nostalgic trip! This was the first GTA I've ever played, back when I still had to buy pirate CDs from street vendors in Brazil. Rough, but good times!
I'd love to play the game again some time, but going down memory lane through the story with your video, in the little free time I have nowadays, really helped scratch that itch.
Cheers!
Thanks for the kind words my friend! Glad you liked the video dude
I have been waiting for this very video since I first saw your profile pic when watching the 50 Cent Bulletproof video.
Thank you, Mr. Vercetti
That awesome video man
You should've mention of Tommy yells at Lance which makes Lance reminded him of his brother, Vic after saying that people patronized him all in his life and says his brother would do that(Vice City Stories shows Lance's man child personality as he caused problems for Vic)
First video ive seen of yours. Gotta say loved it man!
Thanks dude!
I love Vice City. It was such a great game. I also was a huge fan of GTA Liberty City. It was a major influence on the first car I ever bought, a black 1999 BMW 3 series with a ram leather interior.
This is my favorite GTA, and great video 👍
Luved it! Cheers for the time travel to my past! 😊
Great video, my favorite in the series.
My mum bought it for me on launch day, she came home with it and I didn't know.... I played it all night longggggg! lol. It will always be my favourite because it was one of the few games I could bond with my mum over due to the music. It was packed full of music from her childhood and teenage years as she turned 20 in 1986. It also had a massive cultural impact and was the reason why 80s music made such a big comeback and is loved today, I think that fact goes so overstated. The only GTA game I've ever completed as well, and it was the one everyone at school was talking about too. GTA:SA at the time wasn't that big of a deal, at least not here in the UK, it was a slow grow to it's popularity today. I mainly loved it for MTA Race mod a few years later, but then they ruined it with all the RPG stuff.
As always great video man!
Thank you brother
Great video. Love to see more like this for GTA SA, Liberty Stories, Vice Stories etc
I love videos like this about GTA games, I am gonna get in a blanket, have some snacks and watch the full video!
I'm under my quilt and drinking alcohol while watching it lol
It's Autum (fall) here in Aus and the nights are cold
adding myself to the lover of the long videos list!
I just recently went through this games story for the first time and man I can see now why this game is so beloved to so many people. Not only gta fans even some who just grew up with this game either playing their parents copy or older siblings copy they brought to show and tell haha. That being said there is still plenty of jank in this game where it feels the games against you at times. I think the best asset mission is completing all car lists and getting Hillary’s car and the race car with 9k revenue. Awesome vid dude so glad it’s here I hope you have the energy for more long vids like this. Now….sanadreas in the future? 😏
I always liked sunshine autos too, felt like I was in gone in 60 seconds just going down the list, and the car rewards are super cool.
If I can get my steam copy of San Andreas running we'll be good, otherwise I'll have to dust off the ol PS2 and get some recording hardware haha or emulator I suppose
@@MrHammers now you have to have a shot of you blowing literal dust off the ps2, cough like crazy then do the shot of sticking the disc in the ps2 giving it that classic feel. Then it doesn’t work so you just get an emulator running in seconds 😂
That's a good skit hahaha
The impact of vice city is still going strong coming 22years later. There's a grouo from down south in ireland that tour with a great playlist from the game, came to belfast last year and the place was packed out, we're all wearing hawian shirts and the band were unreal, setting the vibe with the vice city opening theme then hitting us with the songs.

Having Philip Michael Thomas included as a voice actor is the most appropriate thing I could imagine. If they’d found space for Don Johnson somewhere too, that’d be too perfect. Still, having a co-star from the actual Miami Vice TV show in this game (which is very obviously modeled after the show) is super cool!

Definitely my favorite gta game, and san Andreas second and vice city stories
Great video👹👹👹
I prefer long form videos but I love any video you make
I haven’t looked at this game in years and the arms/torso proportions are so funny now. Never noticed before
About this mission for the Diaz, where you race to the dealer on the boat: there are no checkpoints in this mission, simply don't follow others, go to the left from the start, you'll go most of the way straight way outrunning the competition, and would only have to make a few turns in the end. I have far more problems with 2 races in the game: racing the bikers and the driver for the bank heist. There I, usually, resort to shooting oponent's tires.
Vice City is where GTA truly found its stride for me.
This is great make more videos like this one for other GTA games
