You are a really good indie documentarian. Maybe the history channel called the history and origin of our favorite video games. I actually think you could be doing a show on one of the big streaming companies since it seems they're always desperate for new original content
I had a DOS based cd player, it'd load to memory, and you could exit and play a DOS game like DOOM with it on, but GTA for sure being able to just load it and shuffle is crazy for the time. It'd be like asking for your music directory, or streaming playlist today and have it play in game. I think people would comprehend that comparison anyways.
It seems like such a small thing now, but playing the original GTA on PC, you could put a music CD into your computer and the in-game radio in the car would play a random song from the CD in place of the radio station. As a kid, it was utterly amazing and blew my mind!
Damn dude I forgot about that! of course I never really got into the GTA games until GTA3 came out like most everyone else, but I do respect what those games were the groundwork for immensely. 25 minutes in, the documentary is simply amazing and you can immediately see how much effort was put into this! This'll be the best "History of GTA" video on YT without any doubts
I'm so old I played every one of these games on their release aside from GTA:London which I wasn't able to pick up till much later. When GTA 3 was released it was astounding. It's difficult to explain to folks what a huge impact GTA 3 actually made on the industry as a whole. There really weren't any games at all that were open world and 3D at the time. It was really the first time you saw that games and entertainment could be limitless. GTA games will always be a day 1 purchase for me.
@Cactuss Don't be sad about the great moments in gaming history you weren't even alive for . Us Boomers will be long gone and dead when your enjoying 80c summers and feasting on bug burgers . Your so winning. :)
I don’t care what it takes but everyone who watched the gta vi trailer needs to see this video. It’s like a spiritual journey connecting the dots with everything that’s happened so far.
I gotta say, I’m not even really into gaming, consoles, PCs etc etc. But I clicked on this, semi-at random, and... wow, I watched the whole thing. It was better than many, many movies I’ve seen lately. Seriously, the amount of work you must have put in to produce such a comprehensive history of the GTA saga is mind-blowing, and could legit be released as a documentary or even movie on a Netflix-type platform. The scripting, production, the way you bring thing full-circle...... a 5* standing ovation is deserved! And this all coming from a non-gaming type o’ guy!
Major props to Nick for not including spoilers. Most people don't care as these games are nearly 20 years old, but there's a surprising number of folks who've never played SA or even GTA IV
I mean, I'm a person who never played any Fallout or Dragon Age game, since I was busy replaying Mass Effect for the 5th time at the time, so I guess there are such people out there, but not playing through San Andreas at least once would be a huge hole in any gamer's resume.
Those are the only 2 i havent played. I put countless hours into all the others. Still have the original GTA 1 and 2 on PS1. But thanks to this video i just bought and installed both SA and IV on my Xbox One. I know nothing about them outside of this video and the memes. So thanks Nick!!
By the length and the quality of this documentary I can tell that a lot of passion and research went into this. Thanks for over 2 hours of GTA nostalgia and infotainment!
The longest vid i've ever watched on YT (not just playing in the background lol) and i've watched tons of long stuff, but most vids are like 40 mins max. Totally worth every second of it! Now i feel like a GTA expert, lol
Been playing GTA since the age of 13 in 1997 until today at the age of 37, played every title, apart from 1 or 2 expansions, seeing them early games bought on a massive wave of nostalgia, GTA has come a long way. This was a top documentary, thank you.
Literally exactly the same for me. Born in 84. Played every single title except for some handhelds. Did you used to play 1 on high school computers? That was fun. Then alt+tab like a boss to not get caught.
Same here I've played every GTA game except for GTA Advance and Chinatown Wars. I remember being 11 or 12 and first starting up GTA 3 and just being blown away and then again having that same feeling the first few minutes I played GTA 4. I still play GTA 5 to this day, but mostly single player (really miss single player expansions) When ever a new GTA game comes out its always one of the most exciting moments in my life and I spend days binging them on launch.
There’s something about San Andreas’ design that makes it feel larger than GTA V. I’m hoping they incorporate that into the next entry, and make it a Multi city state.
I think it's a combination of factors. San Andreas' design seemed to have morr character in its design(for me at least) and you also had more environment variety (Three different cities, country side, country towns, deserts).
Gotta love when you find a gem documentary that isn't riddled with ADs that ruin the experience and the creator of the content is genuinely doing the documentary outta love for the information they are presenting.
I think GTA4’s police interactions were the most realistic. The fact they aren’t alerted to crimes in alleyways and unpopulated locations where there are no witnesses was nice compared to GTAV’s psychic cops.
I've watched this several times now, and it gets better each time. Given the amount of time spent playing these games, the awesome memories, this documentary is incredibly special to me. THANK YOU!
@King Slayer Bruh, that would single handedly make Rockstar bankrupt. They can't sell the same game forever, they know that. Just be a lil bit more patient.
I honestly, can't believe, that it has been 10 years since the last GTA entry. It feels like it's been so long, I really hope they can produce something amazing in 6, the wait has been too long and if it falls on its face, I don't know what will happen to this beloved game series.
There’s so many other alternatives like Watch Dogs, Yakuza and other games that are like GTA, The reason GTA was so popular was because it was unique and there wasn’t many games that could compare to GTA So it might be hard for GTA 6 to have as much success as the other GTA’s
@@RiceCooker-ge2tethey could absolutely go beyond and more. Red dead 2 is the best game of all time for me and it’s set in 1899 imagine a modern world. They can also take things from gta San Andreas that made it fun like the workout/weight system. Learning new moves. Basketball etc
Oh it won’t fail. IV and V have plenty of critics. Leaning on online and waiting 12 years in between major releases has left a sour taste in many mouths. But we’ll all buy it. I never thought V was all that great story wise but it was a hell of sandbox for the sixty bucks. I got far more than my moneys worth. VI will do just fine.
We (the die hard consumers) will still buy it and play. But they’ve waited far too long and based on the trailer for GTA 6, I’m not too impressed. Looks like It’s just a new storyline, but same stuff. I was hoping they’d do something like make it multi-city.
I can't believe GTA V came out in 2013. I still play it to this very day. Amazing documentary skills. It's rare to find such a long video that is so easy to watch. You got a sub.
I grew up playing GTA 3, Vice City, and SA as a kid. I have a friend I met on the old "Multi Theft Auto Vice City" mod for PC which was a mod to make it online multiplayer that I met in 2004 and still talk to this day. Just played GTA 5 for the very first time a couple weeks ago on PC. It's an incredible game. The 1st person is really awesome. Trevor is my favorite character out of the entire franchise. I haven't played online yet, but I have been modding story mode to tweak a few things such as adding more missions, heists, police rebalance, realistic weapons (AKM, M4A1, RPD), Finite Cops, etc. It seems to me gamers are so spoiled that it's like that boy from Harry Potter who is angry he only got 35 birthday gifts instead of 37.
Currently replaying GTA IV and it's definitely my favorite. Feels way more mature while still having typical gta comedy. I wish Vice City would get a proper remake with the Euphoria psychics engine.
@Damion Manuel For me the comedy in IV was spot on, not too dry, not too over the top. Maybe it's because I'm a slav and the adventures of a slav immigrant-criminal that was lied to about the american dream by his relative hit a sweet spot for me. It seems just grounded enough and unreal at the same time that it kind of feels like a slav version of the sopranos.
I never personally saw the "grinding" if you will in Vice City to be all that bad to fully complete the game. Yes, many of the side missions felt a little tedious, but that game in its entirety was a lot of fun. Arguably one of the best GTA games ever made.
It wouldn’t be as good if it didn’t take place in the 80s. If any game needs a ground-up modern remake, it’s Vice City. Soundtrack should remain unchanged. It has a ton of bangers.
Nick, my dude, you smash these out with "A" grade production quality, this video is massive and I watched it all, what a champ, you deserve more subs man.
@@robf4605 The last great Rockstar game they had was Red Dead Redemption 2 and it has been horribly neglected by the current Rockstar team in favor of prioritizing sharkcards and GTA Online.... Look at their other latest projects/failures that is GTA: Defective Edition and Saints Row (Woke Row), total abominations. I will stay opened minded that maybe they will do GTA 6 justice, but I also will keep my expectations low knowing the current Rockstar teams latest track records.

they have a lemmings statue in dundee, although RS North is now in edinburgh there should be a gta one too. the scottish references in all the gta games will go over many people's heads
Round of a applause. LOVE THE DOC, Everything you added and put together goes so well. You nailed it from the history start till what we are right now. Cant wait to see more of this series.
GTA 3 is still my favorite in the series. Also, you'd neglected to mention that in Vice City, you were able to shoot people inside their cars through their car windows, and you were also able to shoot their tires.
Played San Andreas for 30+ hours back in the day and never got past the train, so seeing the storyline in this video makes me really want to play it again
GTA Vs Los Santos is amazing!!! I live in WI and spent 4 months in LA (January to April 2022) after playing GTA V for 7 years and it was unreal to spent that much time there and see so much that reminded me of the game.
Somebody give this man an award, amazing documentary. I remember back when G4 was a thing, i always wanted to watch a History of GTA. That wouldn't have come close to this.
I am so glad to searched about a GTA history. This is one of the best videogame documentary I ever watched, and I am in the mid right now. Curious about your other documentaries. This is top notch!
"Pffff!" Says I, "who's actually gonna watch over 2 hours of GTA history" says I. But I thought I'd watch the start for a bit of early GTA nostalgia. 2 hours ant 17 minutes later..... Well done for keeping it interesting. GTA has always been one of my favourite franchises, online was a great experience until the introduction of rocket vehicles, thus making free mode unplayable as there is ALWAYS someone ready to explode you and your mission directive with a simple push of a button.
I failed high school because of World of Warcraft. Well.. because of my lack of responsibility due to playing the game. One time I played for 36 hours straight. I don't even recall eating.
@@macpac22 That's not how it works lol I work in this field buddy, technically it didn't took 9months. They re-used the code, made a few changes and bam. Educate yourself lol
@@aurelianspodarec2629 it took 9 months. Not sure what part of that you dont understand. Irrespective whether they re-used code or not it took 9 months. Honestly, I remember being in high school when GTA3 came out and reading thr playstation gaming mag and read that you can pop wheels and shoot people through windows in their cars and not fully believing it. I still have the image in my mind of a corner with grass and a monorail over head and the character shooting aiming at the wheels. I remember before that game shooting the wheel either did nothing or the car explodes after enough bullets but the wheels popped ... kids will never know how big that was at the time!
Of course man San andreas was the biggest improvement to the series and till now has the best story ,there is not there is absolutely no comparison,it is the best man,for many people maybe the best video game ever made.Gta 4 and 5 do not even have things san andreas had in its RP back then,it is totally legendary, you absolutely can't compare san andreas with especially the following 2 newer games, i ve been playing since gta 3, gta 5 and especially gta 4 were sooo under expectations, i hope they really make a huge revolution like they did with gta 3 and san andreas , with gta 6 after 200 years of waiting.
What was gta 4? A tiny map with less innovations, less things to do, actually almost nothing to do, generally i would say a very small game,a boring story, and only better graphics and physics? Seriously if gta 6 is not something groundbreaking after waiting 11-12 years,at least bring back the territory system with gang wars or something like this,or interesting locations i am never gonna even play or talk about gta. They have totallyyy screwed the series after san andreas, totally. And they are getting advantage to a disgusting level of newer generations that had not experienced the absolute magic of the older games for a decade with gta online and that bullshit.Succhh a shame.
After years of asking for GTA, my mom finally said yes and bought my Vice City in 2009-2010 when I was 14 or 15. That one and San Andreas were my favorites. Didn't play 4 much. By the time 5 came out, I wasn't gaming much anymore. I'm %100 getting in early on 6 though 😏
GTA 4 will always be the best, the leap was ridiculous. GTA 5 improved on the playground aspect but the immersion in 4 is immense and being able to go into buildings buy items to use, nightclubs etc made the city feel more real and alive. The story was incredible and felt more personal than GTA 5.
I agree that the leap between GTA 2 and III was much more drastic but GTA IV definitely felt like the next step forward. The previous games whilst still classics were left in the past when IV came out. It’s a shame that it’s more or less forgotten now.
I just enjoyed the physics of GTA 4 so much. I spent endless hours in online races there. For me especially the car physics of GTA 5 were a step backwards
Wow, i just watched my whole childhood in 2h. Can’t imagine how much work went into this. I think this Video should be included with GTA 6, also Rockstar should put this on their website.
i watched your 2 hour documentary in one sitting just like i would a movie! your massive work is equally as impressive as rockstar's! GTA is truly one of, if not the best video game series ever made!
Man, GTA IV was such a masterpiece. To me its still my favorite video game up to this day. I just hope R* would make another deep and grounded game like this one.
A beautiful trip into nostalgia. I was a teen when gta3 came out and it was life. Mastered the dodo, knew where unique jumps were, had a save file with all the side stuff done so just the story remained. Man those were the days
I can't watch this video without clowning on you for calling Claude "Cloud" 100 times lmao. Absolutely amazing documentary man, i appreciate your insane amount of work for this huge video.
This documentary of GTA is very interesting to watch. The famous "box art" style of both 3D and HD Universe games really has some comic book feels to it that added beauty to the game. Stephen Bliss (3D era) and Anthony Mcbain (HD era), the artists behind the GTA cover arts, highly deserves more credit.
That was my favorite. I would always try to steal is because I loved that it had the dash light/siren. I got it a bunch of times but died so many times in the process 🤣
Awesome documentary! When I saw the length of this video I thought there’s no way I’m watching this whole thing. I actually watched half and came back to watch the rest. That’s extremely rare for me with a UA-cam video. Really great Job!
I still remember playing GTA and daydreaming about it being in full 3d FPS or 3ps... mad how those early days of gaming were held together largely by the hopes and dreams of what was to come.
Nick930 How do you not have millions of subs? The production quality is above average. The narration is well done. The level of detail regarding the information provided is astounding. How has the whole world not seen your video yet? This will eventually go viral.
When the world needed him most he returned with a banger. I thought History of Mafia was good but man this is a masterpiece. Appreciate the hard work. Didn't notice it was 2 hour long that's how good it was.
Incredible, phenomenal work. I was in 5th grade or so when GTA 3 came out. In the summer that followed the release, my best friend Alice and I were so close. It was the summer before middle school. She'd sleep over at my house for a couple of days, and then we'd sleep over at her house. Repeat all summer. Her older brother, who was around 15 IIRC (we were 11-12) had a PS2 and had gotten GTA 3 for his birthday. We enjoyed watching him play. But what we enjoyed even more was when it was "our turn," a constant back-and-forth battle we had to fight through if we wanted any hope of actually getting to sit down and play without being harassed. He was gone a lot though as the summer went on, probably when "being cool" became more important to him than gaming. So we finally had endless access to play when and how we wanted. Before GTA 3, my friends, my sister, my cousins, and myself spent HOURS playing The Sims, all huddled around the HP desktop in the kitchen. We all brainstormed in an effort to come up with new sadistic ways to torture our Sims 😭 🤣😂 None of us had access to any type of cheat code magazine, gaming fourms, or play throughs (obvious in pre-2000) so all the things we came up with were 100% our own ideas. Alice and I brought that same mentality to GTA3, only we found out fast that we didn't want to hurt Claude. We loved Claude! It wasn't fun to abuse him in creative ways. So it was all of the NPC's who would be the target of our experiments. Our creative energy went into more than just straight violence, though. We'd come up with little back stories, too. Like GTA 3 fan-fiction. We would write little scripts on paper and then would try to act it out while playing the game. It was SO fun and cute looking back. We got really creative with how we did it. There was one "scene" I remember more than all of the others which had to do with Claude waxing poetic about his childhood as he faced the harbor, shooting rockets into the bay. It was so endlessly fun and free running around Liberty City. There was always more to do.
This was well done, but you forgot to mention that GTA (or Race 'n' chase) was based on the C64 game Miami Vice (1986) and was always the inspiration for Vice City.
Absolutely loved watching this - thank you for being so thorough and going into so much effort to get relevant clips and so on, I can't even imagine how much work went into this video.
I agree, it was akin to what 3D Realms did with Duke Nukem. I was blown in 1996 after playing the 2d games a few years before hand. I couldn’t believe how awesome III was when it came out. It definitely marked a new era of video games.
GTA 4 was the best GTA of all time, just the look, feel, and soundtrack just felt perfect for a gritty crime life, not even mentioning how great Niko is as a character.
I had no idea there was so much in GTA 4. I bought it after GTA 5 and it just seemed sepia brown and drab. A lot of the impression was base on the game engine it employed. I now might go back to finish it.
@@chrisliddiard725 i think the best part of this game is the layout of the map and the story, obviously since it’s old it’s less populated and lively, but I love the Liberty City atmosphere, it would be really amazing to be in a city like that with GTA 5 graphics, and the physics in that game were amazing, cars felt heavy, guns felt like they had a kick, and when you crashed it really felt like you crashed. Not like you just murdered someone easily going 300 mph in a bat mobile.
Rockstart sets such a high bar with its games. Years when rockstar games come out I generally get back into games. I brought a console just to play Red Dead 2, it kinda shows the value of the experience they produce. They feel unique, something which people spent hours on hours on hours on producing an engaging experience. I hope I'm playing GTA 69 in VR when I'm 99, hopefully, when I'm 99 it'll feel like I'm 13 again.
Very well done video! GTA is a legendary game series. Especially because of the realismrealized by the music played in the radio and the architecture. They really captured the whole feeling of the time and city portrayed, 2000s New York, 80s Miami and 90s Los Angeles.

It was better than many, many movies I’ve seen lately. Seriously, the amount of work you must have put in to produce such a comprehensive history of the GTA saga is mind-blowing, and could legit be released as a documentary or even movie on a Netflix-type platform. Literally exactly the same for me. Born in 84. Played every single title except for some handhelds. Did you used to play 1 on high school computers? That was fun. Then alt+tab like a boss to not get caught.

Same here I've played every GTA game except for GTA Advance and Chinatown Wars.

GTA 4 was the best.
I AM SO GLAD U SAID THAT. THE COP ALWAYS NO WERE U AT🤔
honestly gta 5 seems to be the worst in my opinion at least
Also the fact you can shoot the gun out of their hand and they will run away.

There was always more to do.
goddamn you deserve more subs with the time and dedication you put into your videos

Man, that's what I call a documentary. I can't imagine how much time and effort you put into it. Great job!
Very well done video! GTA is a legendary game series. Especially because of the realismrealized by the music played in the radio and the architecture. They really captured the whole feeling of the time and city portrayed, 2000s New York, 80s Miami and 90s Los Angeles.
