    Bon Scott era ac/dc was on the radio and in record stores in America in the 70’s, I had all their albums before back in black came out. I'm a Canadian living in Australia since the mid 1960s. Aussie music kinda developed on it's own because of our isolation. ACDC did an outdoor concert in Adelaide which was the LOUDEST I have ever heard. Please enjoy your journey through Australian music from the 60s through the 80s. I know I did;. Daddy Cool, Little River Band, John Farnham, Cold Chisel, ACDC, Tina Arena, the list goes on. Even an American emigrant, the John Butler Trio. You will be greatly rewarded.

  • @boki1693
    @boki1693 5 місяців тому +14

    I think they first became big with the Highway to Hell album. That was the album before Back in Black and Bon Scots last. I remember going to see Ted Nugent with my buddies at MSG and ACDC was opening during the Highway tour. We had heard of ACDC before but Nugent was the reason we were there. By the time it was over, no one cared about Nugent. You should do "Big Balls" from the same album. Or, "Giving the Dog a Bone" from back in Black.
    The thing about ACDC is they are not doing anything complicated but they do it better than anyone else.
    Back Door man you heard on a Zeppelin song or two. It does mean cheating but I was like 11 when I first heard Plant say that and I knew the other meaning at 11. So I am pretty sure Plant knew the other meaning as well and meant it both ways.

      AC/DC wasn't widely known in the U.S. before Highway to Hell, or they would have hit sooner. Although Highway is one of their best and certainly more polished than previous albums thanks to Mutt Lange. The entire side one especially is absolute fire, and imo better than Back in Black. But I have a lot of memories tied to that album so I may be biased.
      And I would have still cared about seeing Ted. He put on a helluva show back then and is one of the GOAT guitar players.

    • @boki1693
      @boki1693 5 місяців тому

      @@jackgilchrist I didn't say before. :) Oh, you were talking to Gary and not me? I had heard some of their songs before Highway and liked them. Whole Lotta Rosie. The Jack. High Voltage maybe? A few others. I almost messed up and said this song and Big Balls but then I remembered, this album was released in the US much later so I hadn't heard those songs before Highway to Hell.
      As far as Ted goes, I am talking about that particular concert. Ted was ok. But after the show ACDC put on, no one was even thinking about Nugent. What I am saying is we came to see Nugent. But by the time the concert was over, everyone was talking about how good ACDC was.

    Naw, he was definitely referencing the traditional old black blues meaning of back door man, which has been referenced in so many songs, especially by Led Zeppelin.
    But what's so great about it here is that is the humerus conclusion to that verse. It's kind of a minor punchline before it goes back into the chorus.

    A friend of mine used to like when I would break out the guitar and do one of my Bon Scott impersonations. One night, a year or so later, while watching live music at a local club, (My bud knew the band) I was just sipping a beer when this song started to play and the band announced, "For this song, we need to have Mike come to the stage." It was one of the scariest and then greatest moments of my life. Belting this out on stage with a good band and shocking the crowd (most didn't know I spoke let alone sing) was an awesome moment. Bon Scott died on the same day as my father back in 1980, so I always had a strange connection with this band, especially with their 2nd singer Bon. (1st was Dave Evans for a year).

    Good call Sam on the TNT similarity. As for Bon? Yes. As soon as they put a mic in his hand he became a certified Hit Man.
    Only Bon Scott could sing the song 'Can I Sit Next to You, Girl' properly and it shows when one compares the AC/DC debut single to the later one featuring Scott. That song really shows why he was so loved.

    This album was released in Australia in 1976. The US had not been marketed properly in their previous tour so 3 of their albums didn't get released in North America until AFTER Highway to Hell came out in 1979. Then, they were so huge, that the US released their whole catalog, putting all their albums on the top 40 for a bit that year.

    Triple entendre in this case. This is one of those songs I find myself unconsciously singing to myself, especially when someone pisses me off.

    Love the reviews guys, for a good different Bon Scott AC/DC, check out "The Jack". But, make sure it's the studio version and not the Brian Johnson one!

    Great song! Brian Johnson also sings this song & both Brian & Bon sing TNT. This does sound similar to the beginning of TNT except that at the beginning of TNT, the band & the fans are chanting "Oy, Oy, Oy..."

    My wife dated Bon when they used to jam at her house way back in the beginning. Aussie Pub Rock is a genre all its own. You need to check out bands from the same era such as The Angels, Australian Crawl and Rose Tattoo

    I believe the American slang meaning of back-door-man is what Phil mentions. Sneaking around during an affair.
    I think the British refer to back-door as more of someone committing an indirect or discreet act. Which is what I assume this song is referencing.
