I bought this album over 30 years ago. This band was way ahead of its time. Slap bass player...one of the best. I'm 76 now. But this song rocks to this day. Enjoy it guys. Rock your world !
If you haven't already, you should checkout Mark King on the "Gizmodrome Live" album by Copeland, King, Costa, & Belew released in 2021...fantastic. And yes, it includes Stewart Copeland on drums and Adrian Belew on guitar.
To this day, I am a die-hard Level 42 fan, and have been since this song. The entire album, "World Machine," which contains this track, is stellar. Lots of mentions here for "Lessons in Love" & "Children Say," both of which are excellent. Some of their most interesting stuff is earlier in their repertoire, including an album produced by members of EWF. Thanks for giving this some well-deserved love!
I was stationed in the UK 86-90. I heard the phenomenal World Machine album. I bought it and started working my way back to The Early Tapes album. Top notch group.
Level 42 is where it's at....smooth, got that 80s synthetic, lil groove, thumping bass, always a good vibe....keep up the good work, enjoy yalls thang....the lead singers specialty is that slap base
Y'all should check out their next biggest hit in the US, "Lessons in Love". Their early stuff was WAY more Jazz-Funk, too. Check out "Starchild" for that era.
I worked for this band back in 84. They are great musicians, that slap bass would go on for the whole gig. The bass bins we built each night were 8ft tall…
Back in '85 I was 20. I'd pretty much only pogo'd to punk music. Then Level 42 came along and I danced as if on a cloud. Wish I was 20 again. Then, way in the future, the internet brought you 3 chaps reacting to Level 42. Awesome. thank you! One last thing: I'm currently playing an online version of Command & Conquer. One of my bases is about to reach Level 42. Peachy
I’m the Same age and at the time in the mid 80’s I was heavily into prog rock but I was shocked how much I loved this song…I didn’t stray too much back then.
Level 42 was definitely one of the best groups in the 80's. To me this was a great song to cruise down the beach here in Hawaii. Just graduated High School and would cruise to beats just like this.
Glad u guys listen to music from the 70s and 80s, that's when I grew up. Those were the two best decades in the history of music and will never be replicated again
Y'all should watch the LIVE Version. Cuz this song has 2 singers. And one of the singers plays Bass by slapping the bass with his taped up thumb. It's so cool to watch how fast his thumb slaps to play those notes on time. Great Jam. One of my Faves for Years
In the 80s I only ever saw the video, never heard it played on the radio where I lived (Florida). The video really stuck with me as well as the song and it was only last year that I pulled up the video again here on YT and decided to check out their other music, none of which I had ever heard. And what a journey it has been! This group was and IS freaking awesome! The talent, the skill! I especially love their early stuff, before this song/album. Mark King is the KING!😍
This was a big hit when it came out. I remember it on the radio all the time and then buying it cause I loved it. I was a teen in the 80's and it was the best time for great music.
This was, and still is my #1 pop song from the first time I heard it and saw the video at 5 years old. An irresistible riff, harmonies between bassist and lead vocalist Mark King ( who sings the verses) and keyboardist and second vocalist Mike Lindup (who handles the choruses in his heavenly falsetto). I definitely agree that this tune needs to be appreciated more. It peaked in the top ten (#7 for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100) in late May and early June 1986, along with their second US hit "Lessons in Love" (#12) in 1987, but they disappeared from the US charts after that and mostly performed in their native UK, Holland, and Germany. Sadly, "Something About You" doesn't get mentioned with other '80s tunes like "Take on Me" and "Come on Eileen," but when reactors such as yourselves discover (or re-discover) it, you realize just how great it is. You should definitely check out their early live instrumentals like "Mr. Pink," "43," and "The Pursuit of Accidents," as well as their early songs like "Love Games," "Weave your Spell," and "The Sun goes down (Living it Up).
I think you'd love the live performance of their song Lessons in Love from the Prince's Trust Rock Gala in 1989! You just gotta hear them live and watch Mark King slap that bass while singing and chewing gum!
The live version is awesome Absolutely one of my favourites followed the band since the 80's and grab every opportunity to see them live soooo many times . Seeing them at the o2 indigo this year. Such an under rated group. Thanks for reviewing
They did this at the LA Taylor Hawkins Foo tribute and I lost my shit. Lol. I looked around and couldn’t believe how no one was as excited as me. Highlight of the tribute for me.
Love you guys ! Love how you don’t continuously stop the music and how you keep the flow going while you comment ! From a 63 year old white guy who was into the rock scene back in the day . But also loved the Isley Brothers, Booties Collins and the rubber band, Parliament and The Funkadelics, Johnny Guitar Watson, etc etc . Carry on men !!!! Make America Great Again !!!!! 🙏🥰
Level 42 has a lot of hits and I believe that you will love their other tracks. "Children Say" is a personal favorite and both studio and live versions are incredible. I hope you react to it and other Level 42 songs.
I love the shit out of this song.. Its been so long that I had forgotten about all about it.Thanks for playing it. I had forgotten how cool the trippy video is too. Thanks again. You made my day.
Man, memories! I used to see Level 42 playing in pubs in the area I lived in Surrey, UK, in the late 70s, before they got big. They're a GREAT band and have so many great tracks! Check out the Shep Pettibone remixes of their tracks! And I think that's the first time I've seen Olli liking a song!
This song is for every mood. If you feel like shit, it will make you happy. If you feel great, it will just make your day even better. I like a lot of music, all genres, but this song, it just hits all cells in your body and makes your body go with it.. I wasn´t even born in 1985, i´m from 1989... And yet, 40 years later, this song is SOOO relevant and funky and it just brings out everything good in music... Whoever dislikes this song, has zero taste in music, PERIOD!
Love the genuine reaction, guys. Mark King, lead singer, is also the bass player. One of the most underrated bass players out there. Love the slap bass he does in other songs. Check out Lessons in Love
There was a slightly longer version that really accentuated the bass, and they used to play it on the R&B station in St. Louis back in the day. Not sure if that happened elsewhere, but this was a huge record in STL, for everyone. It crossed a lot of genres, pop, R&B, college new wave rock, adult contemporary. Seemed like every station was playing this cut.
Loved these guys back in the day. They went from a kind of prog-funk to funk-pop to straight up pop sound. Their early stuff is great. The album after this their drummer and guitar player left because they didn't want to be in a pop band and they were never quite the same after that.
Huge in Britain at the time, they have MANY funky tunes. Next, try their brilliant The Sun Goes Down,it’s funky as all hell, and Mark Kings bass is heavy man. Superb band.
This song is one of my favourites of all time Thank you for giving it recognition, 😮❤ I love the base and in my opinion Mark King is one of the best base guitarists
I bought this album over 30 years ago. This band was way ahead of its time.
Slap bass player...one of the best. I'm 76 now.
But this song rocks to this day. Enjoy it guys. Rock your world !
Great review. I have been listening to Level 42 for almost 40 years. Great band.
mark king is a legendary bass player.

And yes, it includes Stewart Copeland on drums and Adrian Belew on guitar.
Corey is such a happy and positive guy and his vibe is infectious.
Yes!!
I absolutely LOVE this song ❤
Is it so wrong to be human afterall? And a great, almost creeping pre-chorus. I appreciate you guys hitting these 80s standards.
*LEVEL 42 - Lessons In Love*
Lead singer is the real deal on the bass.
Fantastic band with many hits, mark king the lead singer on many of their songs is a fantastic bass guitar player, one of the best in my opinion.
This is one of those songs that I've liked for a long time, but not many people have heard of it.
My favorite song of the 80's, encapsulates that entire period of time for me. Absolutely love it!
To this day, I am a die-hard Level 42 fan, and have been since this song. The entire album, "World Machine," which contains this track, is stellar. I'm a "hard rock guy" but when this song came on the radio, I was rockin it!
The early to mid 80s was happening in the UK 🇬🇧. I was stationed in the UK from 82 to 85 and the music scene was awesome!

Back then my GF dragged me to a Tina Turner concert with Level 42 opening in Dallas. Tina was good but L42 was incredible, been a big fan ever since!
I wish I could have experienced that bass sound live. What a group, always loved them. Leaving me now is my favourite.
Back in '85 I was 20. I'd pretty much only pogo'd to punk music. Then Level 42 came along and I danced as if on a cloud. Wish I was 20 again. I’m the Same age and at the time in the mid 80’s I was heavily into prog rock but I was shocked how much I loved this song…I didn’t stray too much back then.
Definitely a great “summer song”…it was big in the summer of ‘86!
Should point out that the band had two vocalists - Mark King, the bassist is the lead but the falsetto voice is the keyboard player Mike Lindup.
Level 42 was definitely one of the best groups in the 80's. To me this was a great song to cruise down the beach here in Hawaii. Just graduated High School and would cruise to beats just like this.
Something about this song catches your ear and attention
Top 10 song in my life. Positives vibes all the way around on this channel! And never forget, it's all about the bass 🔊
Check out there song Lessons in Love..killer tune...Mark King is a killer bass player
Fenom: “Of course I know this song”
Olliwood: “I ain’t never heard this shit”
Gotta Love the Honesty!!!
LMAO! Gotta love the dynamic!
@@thisisitreactions I Love it!
Great song from a great band. Mark King can play that bass! He’s a bad man on that instrument.
Back in the 80s these boys from the Isle of Wight were one of my favourite bands, slap bass perfection 🇬🇧
I saw Level 42 in a local club here before they got famous. They were amazing. My favourite track of theirs is Love Games.
Glad u guys listen to music from the 70s and 80s, that's when I grew up. Those were the two best decades in the history of music and will never be replicated again
I love watching Corey's face go from 'who are these guys?' to 'this is FIRE!'. 😎🤘
Y'all should watch the LIVE Version. Cuz this song has 2 singers. And one of the singers plays Bass by slapping the bass with his taped up thumb. It's so cool to watch how fast his thumb slaps to play those notes on time.
Great Jam. One of my Faves for Years
I was 15 when this song came out and have loved it ever since! Love Level 42❤
So happy you guys loved it, it’s one of my favorites, the vocals, the funky bass line, just fantastic and fun.
You should really check out Lessons in Love. Really funky!!!
Ikr? Much better than this one.
To Be With You by Mr Big will blow you away. Soulful as HELL! ‘92.
This song is one of my favorites from the 80s. I still know all the words!
80s headbanger here but the first time I heard this song I knew I would have to hide it from my friends!lol
back in the 80's I had the 12" dance remix of this...even more funky! Love your positive reactions and channel!
Reminds me of my dear, departed Dad he loved Level 42 😊 nice track, love it. Thanks for the memories ❤

Great song and remember my sister and her friend always listening to this song while laying out in the sun😁
Mark King is the lead singer and bass player. Sooo good!
Loved this song when it came out. Still on my playlist today, one of probably only a handful of songs in that era. Just so listenable.
This song also got played on R&B radio. That's when I first heard it. Bassist Mark King is also the lead singer. Jazz Funk/Blued Soul.
This is the best of 80's British funk, with great bass.vocals from Mark King. More Level 42.
I love this song! ❤
Mark the master bass player!!!!
When people ask what my favorite 80s song is, I always tell them there are two: "Easy Lover" which you guys know, and this.
Easy lover...yesss!!❤
Love this song and their sound. Another great song of their's is Children Say.
They did this at the LA Taylor Hawkins Foo tribute and I lost my shit. Lol. I looked around and couldn’t believe how no one was as excited as me. Highlight of the tribute for me.
Boys, that bass!! All about that
To Be with you again - BANGER

I really enjoyed Level 42. They opened for Madonna when I went to see her Concert in Seattle years ago.❤ Stay safe
Level 42 has a lot of hits and I believe that you will love their other tracks. "Children Say" is a personal favorite and both studio and live versions are incredible. I hope you react to it and other Level 42 songs.

Banger from the 80s 👌
Awesome song. A timeless classic.

My fav pop 80s song. Ty IZ!!!!! ☘️ 🇺🇲
One of my favourite bands in the Eighties, had all their albums, sheer class
It’s actually a pretty deep song lyrically - and that slap bass is unreal.
Lessons in love is really good too.
That bass
Song reminds me of my 80s childhood. The British are amazing since the psychedelic era.
80s classic for sure
I was stationed in the UK when this dropped in 85. Saw them in concert a couple of times. Excellent band, and Mark King was the slap bass master.
Great song…the 80’s jukebox rules the world.😊❤️
The chorus is one you'd swear you heard before. Sound waves and brain waves in sync.
Love. This song
There were so many groups from that time who had a similar sound. It's makes me think of Naked Eyes "Always Something There To Remind Me".
There was a slightly longer version that really accentuated the bass, and they used to play it on the R&B station in St. Louis back in the day. You guys would love Leaving Me Now by Level 42. Absolutely one of the best bass lines you will ever hear! Mark King is an ace player!!!!
Loved these guys back in the day. They went from a kind of prog-funk to funk-pop to straight up pop sound. Their early stuff is great. The album after this their drummer and guitar player left because they didn't want to be in a pop band and they were never quite the same after that.
This is one of those songs that never gets old...and if you liked this Lesson in Love is 🔥
Lessons in love is a blinder!
So still packs a punch
Has always been one of my favorites!
Spinnin' this song at an 80's Party tonight!! 🎧🔊 Grownin' up in the 80's, good times!!
This was one of my favorite songs by this group.
great tune
theres a R&B singer, Anthony David that did a BANGIN cover of this song
Huge in Britain at the time, they have MANY funky tunes.
