Yeah, that'd be cool, like if I was in the sole survivors feet, the first thing I'd tell Cpt. is that I served in the army before the war and was put into cryogenic storage. Someone should make a mod on this.
But undeniably that is still an American pretending to sound like a native. Very few if any bilingual person would mix words from different languages in the way he does it. Not to mention the voice actor gets quite some tones wrong as well. I'd much prefer English with rich Chinese accent (as commonly heard even among modern PLAN officers/combatants) over half-baked iterations of simple Chinese phrases.
23:00 to be honest, the fact that the event 260+ years ago makes it make a ton of sense when you attack Zao since you watched "what feels like last month" take place right in front of you. Zao had all that time to sit in his little hull and mull over what happened and process it.
Pretty bold statement from the Sole Survivor to say sea monsters aren't real when he/she was frozen for 200 years during a nuclear apocalypse, only to come out from a vault into a world where deathclaws exist.
I've always helped Zao. This is a man broken by time and the weight of his actions and made to endure a hell of watching his crew and friends turn into unrecognizable creatures. All he wants to do is return home, help with whatever restoration efforts there might be, or just die somewhere familiar.
Dang, now I feel bad. I clicked on the Chinese commie option, so I didn't even hesitate to send him to the Chinese version of Valhalla. I'm too long into the main game now to redo this mission, which I found by pure curiosity. I was looking for islands or boats to glide near the marina with the power armor & I landed on the sub first, before I even saw & talked the npc kid on the harbor. 🥸
Yeah, 200 years of cramped isolation with nothing but the memories of your now-destroyed homeland and the guilt of what you've done? Whole what's left of your crew, your family, waste away into mindless zombies and suffer? That's two hellish life sentences! The man has suffered for his sins. And he will never be free of his guilt and mistakes, no matter how long he lives. I always help. He wants to go home and rebuild, try to do some good to atone for the bad. He should at least be able to try.
@paulgrundy6864 I mean that alone isn't an excuse. How many Nazis slaughtered helpless civilians in the name of "just following orders"? How many innocents IRL have died due to people just pushing a button or or just doing their job? By choosing to push the button, Zao was complicit. But he has also been punished. He served his sentence, so he should be allowed to go home.
I really loved the character of Captain Zao. He maintains his military bearing, despite two centuries of loneliness. There is a tragic sort of honor associated with the Captain. He regrets the past, the nuclear fire, and his role in the end of the world. However, his pride in his boat was unbreakable. In a better world, the Captain of the Yangtze would be at the helm of his boat, riding the waves under a bejeweled sky; a proud man and the open sea. Xie xie, Captain Zao. Your war is over.
I always wondered how ghouls could go 200 years in a hellish world without going insane, especially when in isolation. Maybe that’s one of the causes of feral ghouls?

Bethesda stepped up their game in terms of chinese voice actors. General Jingwei in Fallout 3 sounded like a Caucasian merely reading hanyu pinyin off of the script, whereas Zao to me sounded a lot like a native Chinese. His pronunciation of Yangtze and Qian Ting was spot-on.
y'know, when i first encountered this i ofc helped him but when i pictured in my head Cpt. Zao building China House by house, brick by brick. it made me feel....sad but also hopeful if that make sense? i mean he's all alone basically yet he has the optimism to keep going, despite that fact. idk why but that touched me on a personal level.
I like how they portrait Zhao's patriotism. Chinese Patirotism is never equal to fanatics, but the Nostalgia or homesickness (思乡情怀) no matter which corner you are at, and the belief about rebuilding your own land, your own house with your people until you won't be able to do so. I'm not a PRC citizen and i was born in Sydney, but I lived in China for 13 years and my family is chinese, I can say that they really did this very accurate, and the Chinese community of this game marked Captain Zhao as one of the most memorable character of the franchise, it's been a long time since Chinese people, especially a PLA member is portraited this accurate instead of some RED GUARD stereotype. And we really appreciate that.
As someone who is not a member of the Chinese community of this game, I would also call him one of the most memorable characters, right up there with Valentine.
Hearing Zhao's plan - especially about either building, if there is a need, or simply dying, if there isn't, has always had me tear up. It's one of the saddest pieces of hope in the game.
Would have been way cooler if he was the only person in the game to carry the chinese pistol (from fallout3), and after repairing the submarine he would give the pistol to you.
As a Chinese, every time he said “home” and “family” in mandarin, it sting my heart so bad. as a Chinese a lot of old people that I know of, only wants 2 things, their own home and family. Legit tear out

@@AfterDark33 he killed people tho. It doesn't matter if it was orders or not. And no if I ever met any of those bastardy I would put a bullet in their head in n instant.
this reminds me of the story of the USS Indianapolis. The Japanese submarine captain sunk the Indianapolis, and when the war was over the Captain of the Indianapolis was court martialled for not zig zagging to avoid torpedos, but the Japanese sub captain came to the Captains defense saying his submarine was too close for zig zagging to save the ship, the two captains met after the court martial and saluted and forgave one another. The Japanese Captain named Mochitsura Hashimoto and the American Captain Butler McVay III
I'll add as a point of interest/justice, that the Japanese captain was tried as a war criminal due to the tremendous loss of life regarding the sinking of the Indianapolis, but found innocent. It was determined that Captain Hashimoto was simply acting as any submarine captain would have in his place.

Hey it is probably undermanned because it was a suicide mission and perhaps the minimum requirement was 13 men and max capacity was 80. None were expected to survive.
still, even if it was thought to be extremely dangerous, as in practically a suicide mission, if one of the crew would die or otherwise be incapable to work on Pay Day, the strategically critical mission would be a failure. it cuts too close.
I love Zao, he has some amazing voice acting. He even tries and finds the english translations when he cannot think of a word. It sounds authentic. The idea there would be to launch and strike so close that there wouldn't be enough reaction time for retaliation. Strike the places that can command a counterstrike, then have the mainland missles show up later and sweep up the remains. We have the came capability in real life, and would do the same thing.
@@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz I'm pretty sure we designed missiles specifically for this. Using a ICBM at this range is a waste and probably less effective because they are probably programmed to go to a certain height before going to target. Using a SRBM would be way less expensive and maybe more effective. I could be totally wrong, but if a sub was sent so close to mainland, they would have gave him a shorter ranged missile. Well. I read some Wikipedia articles and apparently, submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) are very similar to ICBM... But using an ICBM to target something this close give me same feeling as using a trebuchet instead of a bow. And it should be SLBM and not ICBM as it is inside a submarine.
I'm pretty sure SSBMs are not inter-continental... do you know how huge the missile would have to be SSBM are similar to intermediaterange and shorter-range ballistic missile in terms of range and reaction time

I really want the dialogue option where you can tell Zao that you were there. Like Opt 1: "I was there when the bombs dropped. You're not the only one who's 200 years old" Zao: "After all this time. I. I thought I was the only one who saw the fire. The fire, that burned... People. That burned... Me with guilt" Opt 2: "I was there when you launched those nukes! You burned my country! I saw it with my very own eyes!!" Zao: "I. Understand how you feel. Especially, you were there. But. I was. Also there. And I am punished by 2 centuries of guilt. Sins of past. Must be erased" Opt 3: "You're our enemy! I was there, when you burned Boston, when you burned America! Die commie bastard!" Zao: *Turns hostile* Opt 4: "You received orders? From whom. I was there, Zao. I saw it all, just like you did. What happened afterwards?" Zao: "From command. I. I didn't know you were there. After receiving instructions. Command... Silent. Fēicháng bàoqiàn. Terribly sorry."
I would like a mod where depending on how your Sole Survivors preset look is like a Asian and you can pick which country you are from and you can occasionally have your character say your native language like Japanese,Chinese, and Korean even in the accent from that country
Nothing says adventure like going to some strange land where everyone speaks another language. I would pay 80 dollars for a Fallout Game based in China
Not to mention they could still base parts of it in the US (some kind of prologue, where you put together your expedition - like say repairing a pre-war ship (at best a military one) and selecting people to go with you (or factions, which would influence the rest of the game))...hell, they could bring in the BOS again by making them the faction actually going to China (maybe because they want Chinese stealth tech or salvage what is left of the US-Forces in China...they after all were well entrenched (It's said that the Chinese launched first because they were losing the war after all, not that that has ever been confirmed without a reasonable doubt!) and had brought a lot of tech there, from weapons to power armor and even ships/submarines, tanks, vertibirds etc.) ps: It would also kind of put you in the Enclave's position (meaning you could be a total asshole to the locals who wouldn't have much of a chance attacking you - unless they have their own Brotherhood of Steel (well something similar) with access to ships or aircraft!) with having a well defended stronghold of the coast (one you could also move, so attacking it is even harder than attacking the Enclave Oil Rig!) :)
All these usual fallout things are based on American values. I doubt a game based in China can give you the same feeling without all this made-in-America stuff. FEV wasn't in China, so no super mutant and highly unlikely deathclaws. No traditional vaults for you and everyone are speaking Chinese.
You miss the fact that, China would likely have entirely different monsters, organisations and bunkers, there is so little established that they could honestly do a lot with it. I personally am looking forward to fighting a Yao-panda.
To be fair, the main character is supposed to come from before the great war, and that would be the standard respond. So since it's clearly intentional from the writers and makes sense I don't see why the fuss about it.
isrealjason yea you're probably right. He wouldn't be able to utilize the Panama Canal even if it still exists and is functioning, and the trip around the tip of South America would be way longer, so it does make sense that he would've decided to risk skirting under the Arctic Ocean, despite that being extremely dangerous. Who knows what the Great War did to the climate and what manner of storms await around the far southern longitudes near Cape Horn. It's already one one of the most dangerous sea routes on earth for weather alone, i cannot imagine how much worse it might be in the fallout world.
I would be More scared of what living in the water at high sea,We see thing like dolphin shark, mirelurk it leave a lot of possibilities about what might be staying in these water
devil19x Actually that’s not as likely, the ocean depths would be pretty well protected from nuclear fallout due to ocean currents, sheer size and lack of proximity
David Thomas Question is why would China care about Boston and the East Coast in General? I could only imagine that China cares more about the West Coast more then the East Coast. If China was worried that America could some how use Europe as a jumping off point to get to India and then to China, why not use the Spy network in America to either damage and or course Trouble in the US? Plus even though the majority of people in the US hate Communists, there had to be some who symptoms with it too, so why not use them? Add why not nuke or bomb the Panama Canal to force the US to use over land, Trains, Trucks, and Airplanes. Trespassing Supply's to where they need to go?
One detail you might have left out was one that really tugs at my heartstrings. I think one of the skeletons, one at least on one of the bunks in the submarine, you would find a teddybear. It was explained that in real-life wars, after being ordered to launch nukes, those who would work in those subs would be extremely struck with grief that they would cry in their bunk while holding a teddybear. It would more than likely be the same case with the Chinese crew who worked on that submarine.

I agree about not being able to tell him that you were there and alive the day his nukes dropped. Captain Zao, is one of the few encounters that make me, genuinely sad. A man, a soldier sent to fight a war that ended in nuclear fire is stuck in the consequences of his actions nearly 200 years ago, he just wants to go home. That’s admirable and I wish there were some more living crew we could help out not just feral ghouls. This is a sad story, and it’s one of the reasons I always wish to help him.
I absolutely loved Zao and really enjoyed his presence in the Fallout world. Even though Zao is responsible for launching the warheads, these last 200 years have been punishment enough. What a tortured soul. I hope he can find peace. That being said, I really wished Bethesda put a little more into this quest-line. Seeing an actual glimpse into Fallout China would have been one of the best experiences in the game. I would also love to know not only what happened to China but also I'd be very interested in knowing more about what happened to the rest of the world.

Zao wasn’t the reason the world got nuked, Communist Chinese politics and generals already sealed that fate. All Zao did was press a button.

Same, nothing is worse than making someone sad in a game… but doesn’t matter, just use mods

The Chinese really understood the IC in ICBM ^^
The art of launching Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles from 5 kilometers away...
@@PrinceUzuRyu its also the Fallout Universe....so being _that_ pedantic helps no one.

I'm pretty sure SSBMs are not inter-continental... do you know how huge the missile would have to be
SSBM are similar to intermediaterange and shorter-range ballistic missile in terms of range and reaction time
The sub is stuffed with American supplies because he collected all that stuff on his scavenging missions. I'm assuming all his original supplies ran out since the sub wasn't stocked up for 200 years of living.
Zachary Rose Didn't think about that... makes sense, though.

I really want the dialogue option where you can tell Zao that you were there.
Like
Opt 1: "I was there when the bombs dropped. You're not the only one who's 200 years old"
Zao: "After all this time. I. I thought I was the only one who saw the fire. The fire, that burned... People. That burned... Me with guilt"
Opt 2: "I was there when you launched those nukes! You burned my country! I saw it with my very own eyes!!"
Zao: "I. Understand how you feel. Especially, you were there. But. I was. Also there. And I am punished by 2 centuries of guilt. Sins of past. Must be erased"
Opt 3: "You're our enemy! I was there, when you burned Boston, when you burned America! Die commie bastard!"
Zao: *Turns hostile*
Opt 4: "You received orders? From whom. I was there, Zao. I saw it all, just like you did. What happened afterwards?"
Zao: "From command. I. I didn't know you were there. After receiving instructions. Command... Silent. Fēicháng bàoqiàn. Terribly sorry."
Last option is god tier. Great idea
mods.....might not get the voice but lets get what we can
I would like a mod where depending on how your Sole Survivors preset look is like a Asian and you can pick which country you are from and you can occasionally have your character say your native language like Japanese,Chinese, and Korean even in the accent from that country
@@pandorasnyactor474I mean AI exists
Nothing says adventure like going to some strange land where everyone speaks another language. I would pay 80 dollars for a Fallout Game based in China
Falnix Valencroth Asia is too big for an island
Not to mention they could still base parts of it in the US (some kind of prologue, where you put together your expedition - like say repairing a pre-war ship (at best a military one) and selecting people to go with you (or factions, which would influence the rest of the game))...hell, they could bring in the BOS again by making them the faction actually going to China (maybe because they want Chinese stealth tech or salvage what is left of the US-Forces in China...they after all were well entrenched (It's said that the Chinese launched first because they were losing the war after all, not that that has ever been confirmed without a reasonable doubt!) and had brought a lot of tech there, from weapons to power armor and even ships/submarines, tanks, vertibirds etc.)
ps: It would also kind of put you in the Enclave's position (meaning you could be a total asshole to the locals who wouldn't have much of a chance attacking you - unless they have their own Brotherhood of Steel (well something similar) with access to ships or aircraft!) with having a well defended stronghold of the coast (one you could also move, so attacking it is even harder than attacking the Enclave Oil Rig!) :)
Bösartiger Wal [Vicious Whale] he said “Strange land” not “Island” so your comment makes no sense at all
All these usual fallout things are based on American values.
"There is no such thing as sea monsters."
Said the nuclear fallout survivor who fights monsters.
Troy D Legit my first reaction
To be fair, the main character is supposed to come from before the great war, and that would be the standard respond.
So since it's clearly intentional from the writers and makes sense I don't see why the fuss about it.
if he was going back to China he would go the north pole way, so it makes perfect sense that the missiles come from the north.
isrealjason yea you're probably right.
I would be More scared of what living in the water at high sea,We see thing like dolphin shark, mirelurk it leave a lot of possibilities about what might be staying in these water
maybe he goes by africa, then india, then to china
devil19x Actually that’s not as likely, the ocean depths would be pretty well protected from nuclear fallout due to ocean currents, sheer size and lack of proximity
This mission made me want a fallout based in China. So much lore to be had

I feel like out of all of the times you have the option to say that in the game, the most fitting and heart wrenching would have been during this quest. I wish Bethedsa had put that as a dialogue option in the game, I would have loved to see his reaction.

Fallout 5: China.
Radiation gives the locals Wuxia-like powers, the monsters are Qilins, Wingless Dragons and Turtle Dragons.

I used to hope for a total war China when I was in middle school, now 10 years later it came true. Now I'm hoping for fallout China.
Hai Han because of you we have to wait 10 years now. Thanks.
He literally just mentions that he is ashamed of launching the nukes.
Ehh. Is 200 years really enough punishment for killing who knows how many. 100s of thousands? Even if it was an order.. no sympathy from me. I would unalive him.
@@brandonsutton7474y'all's choice. I never kill him. As mentioned already, 200+ years alone in a submarine with feral crewmates intent on killing you is punishment enough.
I would have liked to have Zao's first mate as a regular ghoul and you find him stuck in a missile silo for 200+ years. And he gives you a password to unlock the silo and get the warhead. Once he is out he gives you the warhead. He speaks much better English than Captain Zao. After the sub is repaired, the first mate decides to stay in Boston to help their new friend and he can be your companion.
Sounds like it would make a good mod.
Yeah, problem is is its very borderline as a companion, I'd like to find a very obscured village in the Fallout 4 map with the surviving ghoul crew of the yangtzee who can function as a normal settlement (Join the minutemen, trade etc)
But I guess it is plausible seeing how borderline the way you got cait as a companion so its not a bad idea
