I still dont get why retaking Quincy isn't a minute man quest. it would be reviving the minute men in the public eye more than helping out 70 small settlements ever could
After taking back the Castle and raising your rep, retaking Quincy would have been an awesome three way battle. Minutemen vs Gunners vs BOS(if you’re on bad terms).
As a resident of IRL Quincy, I was horrified to discover all the lore around my city. As a fan of the Minutemen I was really hoping for a quest to liberate the city and make it a settlement. John Adams would be ashamed knowing the Gunners were fixing their power armor right above his grave.

I wish Bethesda made retaking Quincy a companion/faction quest for Preston and the Minutemen, as well as making it a settlement. This would've served as a better pre-institute battle than just setting up the artillery in my opinion. Retaking Quincy would definitely show that the Minutemen are back (potentially at their strongest) raising them as a threat to the institute, pushing the story along the Minutemen path. It would've also been more interesting to see the institute attacking multiple settlements before the nuclear option quest, rather than just the castle (and in this case, Quincy), making the Minuteman player appreciate their own work (the settlements) as well as making the institute more blatantly evil.
Ryan Burnham it would have been great to have it where after the artillery is set up Preston asks if we can avenge col. Hollis and you do an artillery strike on Quincy and clear out the rest of the gunners
I agree it seems odd that Bethesda didn't let us build there a pre built settlement would have been the perfect place not to mention that after one time where Preston mentions it in the entire minuteman questline it is almost never brought up again it's a wasted opportunity.
Ryan Burnham the minutemen that needs mods to function,there's not one thing that didn't improvement in the base game, and Bethesda almost feels like they program them that way they don't level with the player and if you don't build settlements in the mid game you never hear about them
On my last Minutemen playthrough I made a shrine at Sanctuary with a big sign saying 'remember Quincy' and the hats and helmets of all the Gunners and traitors from Quincy on display.
I gave Marcy and Jun the yellow house the hamg out at in sanctuary and made a little memorial for Kyle in the spare bedroom. Little candles and his name with a couple kids toys.
Joe Turner in my minutemen playtrough I have a mod that is called the Minutemen rellay flare gun and what it does is it spawns minutemen support but you can do it as many times as possible and I can have an army of Minutemen. I haven't cleared Quincy yet but I can't wait when I do that xD

I think so, it should be a chain of quest: - First, if we unlocked all non-require quest settlements (on vanilla, not count for DLC), Preston will suggest us to take revenge on Gunners. The first step will be retaking Quincy, it begin the first stage: You go around the town to scout it first and report back, or if you have Deacon, he will disappeared for 24h when comes to the town and returned with full intelligent. - Second stage, we have 2 options: + First is optional option, shut down completely Gunner's supply route to Quincy, this make all Gunners including bosses lose 25% of HP and the town will have 25% less encounters when enter later. You need to destroy 4 Gunner Caravan, the next comes after 24h when the previous be destroyed. The last will have very large convoy. + Second, Preston suggest that Minutemen need artillery superior for this battle so you have to build it on 5 settlements closest to Quincy and also build additional protection since Gunners may attack those battery. - Third stage, to soften Quincy, you have another 2 options, the result remained unchanged. + Spark the conflict inside leaders so they will kill one: you can ask Deacon (he require extra caps donation for Railroad and later Railroad will take some of the land on Quincy to make new base and moved to), the Longs (since they lost their child they will do that as revenge) or Father (if you side with The Institute, he will send some Synth to infiltrate to the town in exchange of a base for the Institute) + Directly assassinate one: You have to find another gun that can shoot through power armor, then Preston, Paladin Danse or Tinker Tom will introduce Gauss Rifle (Preston will says about The Last Minute and you can borrow it temporarily until the quest end, Danse will says you can buy one of them at Teagan's arsenal and mentioned it was used by The Lone Wanderer previously, Tinker Tom will give you location to retrieve it). Then you can give the Rifle with ammo to McCready and he will finished it quick or do it by yourself. - Final stage - The assault: You have 2 options, bombard the town into rubbles (very messy to clean up later but this is the easiest choice) or bombard to the target you throw the smoke grenade to. After that you come to the checkpoint location and shoot flare. About 80 Minuteman will come around the town in cluster and begin assault. If Gunner leaders not be killed by artillery, you can capture them and have a choice to execute them, send them to Far Harbor as labor (must have Far Harbor DLC and at least one settlement on it actvated) or imprison them for later quests to attack Gunner Plaza. If Piper is at the companion, later she will make a publish about this battle, inspired multiple people to fight against Gunners at Gunner’s checkpoint across the game when you come near. Reward: One Crafting station will appeared and you can turn Quincy into settlements, this will be the biggest one in the game. However, if you ask Railroad or The Institute to assists on third stage, they will take 1/4 of the area for new base.
Gunners are hypocrites and liars. Ultimately, they're just a more organized version of Raiders. Clint didn't want order, that was just his excuse to justify that he wanted what the settlers of Quincy had. If that was really Clint's view, he wouldn't have treated those who surrendered so violently. He just wanted to revel in the carnage and pillage the loot, just like a Raider. There's very little difference between the two factions, no matter what the Gunners like to tell themselves and others to the contrary.
well they do have structure but they do go by a set of basic ideals from what i could find. besides at least theres one random enconter where a raider is sad for her dead friend.
Now, keep in mind that I HATE the gunners, but he could've been putting down the prisoners violently as a scare tactic. By showing his brutality, people are less likely to rebel, y'know? Think about the red states. Still, I think you hit the nail on the head.

It naturally goes by a different set of moral standards based around the world going to crap, which, well...tends to make those standards not super great. Even the Brotherhood and factions who've got it more together and have better intentions are kind of meh by the way we in this era judge right and wrong.
But let me just say I absolutely despise the gunners and raiders cause they live in filth, the gunners are just a bit smarter, but they couldve made Quincy really nice for their gunners but they just choose to live In filth and it disgusts me
@@thevigilantofsleep7051 they didn’t really have that long between taking it and then you coming along and clearing it out. After all the gunners complain about the car park being infested and had made several attempts to clear it out however they never got to before you turn up. They were more concerned about making sure that their place was relatively safe over making it a comfortable life for them. After all you hear about how they shoot down at the raiders in the quarry from the bypass to tell them they shouldn’t be messed with.
Oxhorn, I thought you might look into this but near the Atom Cats garage, you can find a boat with two skeletons in it ( A male and female) and they have a note saying "Quincy Survivors"
There is a great mod that turns Quincy into a settlement after you clear out the Gunners. Knowing you like to play the Minutemen and build settlements I wouldn't mind actually seeing what you could do with Quincy. That is definitely something I would want to see.

I always take back Quincy after securing the Castle. I refuse to let this stain on the Minutemen's honor stand uncorrected. I tend to put Clint's bloody body right by the Castle gates.

Hey Oxhorn, great video! I have one small correction for you. There's a terminal (I forget whose) which talks about how Clint and the Gunners assaulted Quincy. They literally blew up the concrete support to the overpass, causing it to collapse. The Gunners then used this as a way to gain height advantage over the town. The minutemen didn't defend the overpass because there was no access it to it anyways, that is, until the Gunners created one. I think this is also why Clint received a lot of praise from Captain Wes. It was a genius plan executed perfectly. Anyways, I love your videos. Keep it up!
pfffft is that your player build? i suggest not going heavy as you blow threw ammo. unless you have about 6 lv3 Gun merchants at a settlement and a whole lot of muitfruit to sell for caps, as at lv 2 of cap collector they sell for 42caps i think? its not hard to get mutifruit either so

Fallout 1 and 2 , which younger players mayby not played, have ton of intresting lore (in first Fallout we have first inclines about Vault true purpose for example).
Not only , but yes. Although i am annoyed as progressing on tier IV and V planes is i think broken, as upgrades have massive impact on plane and it hamper them . I wrote that to Slugjins , which not answered. Better than AW company before russians took over them, as my old comp just barely met req and it could not run, they said it is not game for poor people and if i cannot buy new computer i mayby should go to work. I personally think it would be cool to make Quincy a settlement and make it a minutemen base. Or a dlc were the sole survivor being general of the minutemen and wage war against Gunner Outpost/ base and make it under minutemen control.
I think the gunners should be a full on faction, like an endgame faction, taking out all the other factions and taking over towns. Also if you have Nuka-World like me, I think there should be another ending. As you enter Nuka-World, wading your way through the gauntlet, destroying Colter, a man in a fedora, glasses and suit aproaches. He says ‘Hey, you. Your the one that killed Colter right? I have an offer for you, meet me at the bradberton Overpass, you won’t regret it.’ You will then have the option to pass a Orange level speech check to ask him who he really is.
Bernard Jeinkins of course the institute would care enough to destroy the minutemen just as they cared to destroy the CPG it's far easier to take what they want and do what they want to a fractured commonwealth.
This is my biggest gripe with the minutemen that such a great story mission opportunity was never made. Even if it might be to large for settlement and the enemies would reappear there just being a formal mission to take back the town with the minutemen should have been part of their quest line.

Preston is such a great guy. Really. He doesn't just talk (Like the Brotherhood in this particular game), he actually puts his efforts where his mouth is.
The question on my mind is, why did the Gunners attack? Did someone hire them? Why are they taking a town like Raiders when they already have several bases in the Commonwealth?
averagejoe455 Perhaps the Gunners were searching for supplies nearby Quincy as Oxhorn slightly mentioned in the beginning of the video. After the Gunners were taken out by the Minutemen, the other Gunners were worried about their dispatched unit, so they sent in reinforcements. After that, the story went on as the video explains.
averagejoe455 I would come to believe they came to a bigger goal to take over Quincy, as Kabuki Kitsunse mentioned; it is a strategic location for them.
averagejoe455 It is possible that Clint secretly had contact with the Gunners before they showed up at Quincy the first time. After all, that makes sense because Clint was the one leading the Gunners after the first unit was dispatched by the Minutemen. Maybe Clint influenced the Gunners enough to take over Quincy.

@oxhorn I know this upload is 6 years old but I have to tip my hat to you; this video is simply brilliant. The way you wove in the characters and stories even the most casual Fallout 4 player has met with the (harder to find) detailed backstory of Quincy was done just right. The pathos you express at the death of a child. Your description of opposing leaders' world views, which goes beyond anything to be found in the terminals, was very insightful. For me, characterising them as short-term vs. long-term views helped turn a murky rationale for battle in to a clear one. Masterfully done. I truly appreciate it.
I don't share you're view of Colonel Hollis at all. Preston Garvey thinks of civilization and a better future, probably more than anyone else. But I saw in Hollis' actions, particularly his decision to reject Clint's offer of evacuating the town in exchange for no further deaths, a man concerned more with honor than the best interests of his charges. Hollis didn't even defer to Mayor Jackson for a decision. Whether or not Quincy's people should abandon their homes in exchange for their lives should've been his call (preferably with a quick referendum). Instead, Hollis got most of his command and most of his charges killed because he was angry at Clint's defection. Peace, liberty, and civilization is not possible without life. And there is a lot of uninhabited land in the Commonwealth. They'll have to fight ghouls or mole-rats or whatnot. But they'll at least have a chance. They never did against the Gunners. I have two questions. Where did Colonel Hollis' regiment call home prior to this? I know Clint's forces were a detachment from Gunners' Plaza, but I don't know where the Minutemen lived. Second (and this is bigger), mercenaries, generally speaking, aren't really interested in real estate. Not enough to fight for it (that place doesn't look any good for salvage, either). They are businessmen and businessmen buy what they need. Killing people you haven't been paid to makes one a pariah, and pariahs don't find work. I can see them doing this to get back at Quincy if Jackson stiffed them on a job. Disproportionate and bad PR, but better than a land grab. No mention of such a thing. Some had to have hired Captain Wes' company to do this. But who then? I don't think a private individual would have the caps. The Institute? No, as I said in a comment to the HalluciGen video, the Institute doesn't hire Gunners. Kellogg does whatever their synths can't do. And they've already wiped out University Point with their Gen 2s, for all the good it did them. They'd do the same with Quincy. Raiders, Triggermen, and Atomists would take take Quincy themselves, if they wanted it or had some grudge. Some other settlement? I can certain see inter-communal warfare playing out like this. And it would explain the divisions in the Minutemen regiments if they came from different settlements that disliked each other. But consider the availables. Zeke's way too cool for that jive. Gwen McNamara probably hasn't even heard of Quincy. Jacob Orden's only concerned about his, erm, "business". Desdemona is more concerned with staying hid rather than avenging mob slain runners (assuming anyone from Quincy did any such thing). Kessler would withhold caravan services. Wiseman is too far away and would turn the other cheek. Hancock is certainly vindictive enough. But he would get creative, maybe grab some stealth boys and sack Jackson's house or otherwise humiliate him in front of his constituents. As for McDonough, see the Institute. Every other place is either a family farm or a bunch of unattended Mr. Handys. Seriously, who put the Gunners up to this?
It actually could make sense for the institute to do this. Picture this diamond city is the hub of the commonwealth and the institue has control of it and all of the people around it then a new town appears no point wasting recourses to try and take control of two towns to accomplish the same goal just get someone to pose as a rich surface dweller and pay the gunners to make it look like a regular hit when in reality it was taking out the competition.
I think you put in more effort than Bethesda in figuring out the Gunners' motivations. They behave like Raiders in the game, it makes no sense. In fact, if we go off the notion that Gunners only do things for contracts and caps, the only reason for invading Quincy is if Mayor Jackson or some other Quincy resident owed them money for something and then refused to pay up.
cloudyvortex I definitely agree that Hollis should have talked to Mayor Jackson first. That needed to be discussed, not decided in 2 seconds. As for needing motivation, I'm not so sure they always need it. Quincy may have been a location the brass wanted for themselves. It seems to be prosperous and growing. In a different comment, Fudgel suggested that the original force of the gunners may be located out of the CW entirely. Which makes sense considering we don't see high ranked officers and the CW is a hotspot for other people to come too. Taking that approach, Quincy makes even more sense. If the gunners operation lay elsewhere, then they are having to transport troops, supplies, and ammunitions. Their current holdings in the CW couldn't sustain the amount of gunners that inhabit it. Maybe the brass decided it was time for them to set up properly. Taking DC would be extremely hard costly. Goodneighbor would be difficult and maybe not even worth it. Bunker Hill would have been horrible because the raiders would have been all over them. The rest of the settlements that are functioning aren't easily defensible once taken. But then you have Quincy. With the overpass and already established walls, it looks very promising to defend. It's inhabited by settlers, not soldiers, and not many minuteman came to its defense. It's spacious and has room for growth, it's in a good location, and be fortified easily to make it even stronger. That's a perfect place to start establishing themselves more permanently.
Quincy as a barracks? Plausible, but I agree with the idea that the Gunners are foreign to the Commonwealth. Which is why I think they'd more likely take up land somewhere else. Stealing the Quincy folks land without provocation would make them a pariah and much harder to find work as mercenaries and provide much greater resistance whenever the Gunners want anything. Like Machiavelli said, it's safer to feared than loved, but it is crucial to avoid being hated. Unlike the Institute, who are at least descended from fellow Bay Staters, the Gunners and the Brotherhood are outsiders and already have humanity's xenophobic instincts to work against. The BoS understands that and, whatever else you may say about it, is trying to avoid the appearance of tyranny and cruelty. With this, the Gunners have insured they are seen only as invasive raiders and treated as such. There's a reason you never see any Gunners in D.C. The guards would probably shoot them on sight. They're lucky the Neighborhood Watch is more laid back and Winlock and Barnes were still worried enough not to terminate MacCready over his defection (the massacre may well had been the final straw for him, but he indicates that sort of thing was typical for the Gunners). There is no way the land was worth the political cost. Not when they could've taken Andrew Station. No potential customers are going to care about raiders or fear those who would slaughter them. I'm not saying its implausible that Gunner leadership would make such a stupid mistake. Humans in this world have proven themselves to be dumber than real humans on several occasions. I'm saying it's lazy writing to be so vague about antagonists' motivations that we are grasping at straws, we have a right to complain about it.
This was the toughest ingame fight for me and I was a level 40ish. Took me two whole in game days and wasted every single bit of my ammo. Totally worth the fight
You mean having the Minutemen intact under Colonel Hollis and you having to help them out from there? Yeah that sounds good, they could play the underdog against the Brotherhood of Steel or something.
It's pitty, that places like Quincy and University points aren't available as settlements after clearing. Of course we have mods, but it can be added in game. Maybe Bethesta make new update or new dlc and fix it.👌 Thank for many good materials and inspirations.
it's a cool series but where the gunners become their endless supplies of high quality laser and plasma weapons? I don't know because were pretty experimental even when the bombs dropped... there couldn't be that much out their...
Nicholas Cross ammo isn't all that hard to make actually. Heck even bullet proof vests can be made out of alternative materials. There is a vid somewhere I saw of one being made out of those vacume seal bags stuffed with fiberglass insulation, covered with flex seal spray and a thin tempered layer of steel. After that it's just cosmetics to make it look nice. Same goes for allot of modern combat rifles. Laser/plasma weapons would be the real challenge as according to all lore they were rare even before the war.
Handy Duncan There’s a mod which suggests that the Gunners serve a larger purpose. It also suggests why we see no Enclave in the game. Basically, what it suggests is that the Gunners actually serve the Enclave, and to cover their allegiance, they told a lie; that they were just a group of advanced guards for hire. This can also technically correct MacCreedy’s “Lie” about being a soldier.
I just realized Quincy reminds me of Old Haven from Borderlands 1. Both seem to be once decent cities in a dangerous wasteland until the inhabitants were killed or driven out by a large militaristic force and both locations are when the game really starts to get tough. These places are also kind of large including being able to explore the rooftops and probably not being too hard to get lost.

That's a good point what if the institute (father) paid the gunners to take out the rest of the minutemen before he released his parent. That way they wouldn't be around to influence him and he would find his way to the institute easier and join them
I think that it would be nice to retaking Quincy as a minutman quest, maybe it could be gained by gaining affinity with Preston or after retaking the castle or after talking to the crazy lady at the castle
I just cleared Quincy today after watching you video. It makes it so much more interesting already knowing the lore of an area before going. I made sure to pick up the longs sons hat. Thanks oxhorn for another great video. I look forward to them. During my unwind from work.
I somehow stumbled into Quincy *waaaayyy* too early in my first playthrough and was legit in tears as I was trying to duck, dodge, bob, and weave my way out. It was horrible but I’d also be lying if I said it wasn’t absolutely hilarious. Like a train wreck, I guess

My current Minuteman build is a tweak of your metal general build who uses Tessa‘s fist and good intentions, and I’ve made it into his story that when he learned of Quincy, the first thing he did when he became general was rounded up a force and took it back

I just don’t understand why the Gunners would do this. I know, they’re bad guys, but they’re mercs. Not Raiders. So why would they do something like this?
It’s the same reason why the various raider groups tried to take over multiple buildings. As you find out through clearing several places you can see that they do it just to control more territory. More territory that you own means the easier you can move people and resources around. This was close to their main base so probably saw it either as a threat or a site to take for supplies.
I love the way you tell the stories of fallout 4 not only with fantastic story telling but logical deduction of what has happened to tie up loose ends Bethesda didn't give us
I’m early in the video but I wonder about Sturges being replaced as a synth and contributing to the destruction of Quincy, but without further instruction by the institute he is forced to stay with Preston, now knowing the MM aren’t much of a threat. He must defect during our time with us, or in the museum so as not to side with the institute during the main quest.
I love the layout and idea of Quincy as a town. I wish we could either have rebuilt it with new unique people, OR it had been fine when we first start the game and then at a point, it gets sacked. I think that would have made the minutemen quest line more impactful. Meeting the people, doing their quests, and maybe getting a home there would have really built a connection with another group of people. And having that destroyed unexpectedly would have been extremely impactful. I think that would have made the minutemen matter a lot more and give reason to why we become the general. Our friends and new home are destroyed and the minutemen failed to answer. So we take up the mantel to make sure that never happens again.
In my game, I waited until I had an artillery battery at every settlement close to Quincy, then strolled up in there, threw about a dozen artillery smoke grenades, and relished in all the flying body parts.
I do have one question, and not sure if you answered in the videos, but have you thought about where the Gunners come from? I like the idea of one of the theory out there that they came from Vault 75, where they trained the children to become smarter and stronger, and at the age of eighteen, I think it was, depending on a few tests, they were either killed or become new researchers or I think solders. But at some point in time some of the children had enough and escaped and become the Gunners. Which explains why they know so much about the Vaults, and use them. But I would like to hear what you think, where do you think come from?
Liam Lane I like to think of them being a tiny segment of the brotherhood that abused their power and were kicked out, but in their revolt they stole some suits of power armour, then they were armed with laser weaponry, the leaders used the power armour and from then on they were just raiders. I like this idea because it would make more brotherhood quests like killing some gunners and at the end you storm their HQ to retrieve the stolen equipment and end their regime. I don't like how they're treated as mercs, they should just be raiders, evil brotherhood members. It also makes sense how they would even survive the revolt because the brotherhood was in a bad situation in the mid west and back home so they did all of this when the brotherhood were weak. It would be poetic justice, they thought they could do whatever they want and screw the brotherhood over but when they become stronger with a whole army and they get stormed, it's like sweet revenge. So recently, I found how the Gunners took the overpass. I found a journal entry somewhere about how they blew the supports on the overpass collapsing the part you can climb.

As a resident of IRL Quincy, I was horrified to discover all the lore around my city. As a fan of the Minutemen I was really hoping for a quest to liberate the city and make it a settlement. John Adams would be ashamed knowing the Gunners were fixing their power armor right above his grave.

I wish Bethesda made retaking Quincy a companion/faction quest for Preston and the Minutemen, as well as making it a settlement. This would've served as a better pre-institute battle than just setting up the artillery in my opinion. Retaking Quincy would definitely show that the Minutemen are back (potentially at their strongest) raising them as a threat to the institute, pushing the story along the Minutemen path. It would've also been more interesting to see the institute attacking multiple settlements before the nuclear option quest, rather than just the castle (and in this case, Quincy), making the Minuteman player appreciate their own work (the settlements) as well as making the institute more blatantly evil.

I agree it seems odd that Bethesda didn't let us build there a pre built settlement would have been the perfect place not to mention that after one time where Preston mentions it in the entire minuteman questline it is almost never brought up again it's a wasted opportunity.

On my last Minutemen playthrough I made a shrine at Sanctuary with a big sign saying 'remember Quincy' and the hats and helmets of all the Gunners and traitors from Quincy on display.

I think so, it should be a chain of quest:
- First, if we unlocked all non-require quest settlements (on vanilla, not count for DLC), Preston will suggest us to take revenge on Gunners. The first step will be retaking Quincy, it begin the first stage: You go around the town to scout it first and report back, or if you have Deacon, he will disappeared for 24h when comes to the town and returned with full intelligent.
- Second stage, we have 2 options:
+ First is optional option, shut down completely Gunner's supply route to Quincy, this make all Gunners including bosses lose 25% of HP and the town will have 25% less encounters when enter later. You need to destroy 4 Gunner Caravan, the next comes after 24h when the previous be destroyed. The last will have very large convoy.
+ Second, Preston suggest that Minutemen need artillery superior for this battle so you have to build it on 5 settlements closest to Quincy and also build additional protection since Gunners may attack those battery.
- Third stage, to soften Quincy, you have another 2 options, the result remained unchanged.
+ Spark the conflict inside leaders so they will kill one: you can ask Deacon (he require extra caps donation for Railroad and later Railroad will take some of the land on Quincy to make new base and moved to), the Longs (since they lost their child they will do that as revenge) or Father (if you side with The Institute, he will send some Synth to infiltrate to the town in exchange of a base for the Institute)
+ Directly assassinate one: You have to find another gun that can shoot through power armor, then Preston, Paladin Danse or Tinker Tom will introduce Gauss Rifle (Preston will says about The Last Minute and you can borrow it temporarily until the quest end, Danse will says you can buy one of them at Teagan's arsenal and mentioned it was used by The Lone Wanderer previously, Tinker Tom will give you location to retrieve it). Then you can give the Rifle with ammo to McCready and he will finished it quick or do it by yourself.
- Final stage - The assault: You have 2 options, bombard the town into rubbles (very messy to clean up later but this is the easiest choice) or bombard to the target you throw the smoke grenade to. After that you come to the checkpoint location and shoot flare. About 80 Minuteman will come around the town in cluster and begin assault. If Gunner leaders not be killed by artillery, you can capture them and have a choice to execute them, send them to Far Harbor as labor (must have Far Harbor DLC and at least one settlement on it actvated) or imprison them for later quests to attack Gunner Plaza. If Piper is at the companion, later she will make a publish about this battle, inspired multiple people to fight against Gunners at Gunner’s checkpoint across the game when you come near.
Reward: One Crafting station will appeared and you can turn Quincy into settlements, this will be the biggest one in the game. However, if you ask Railroad or The Institute to assists on third stage, they will take 1/4 of the area for new base.

Gunners are hypocrites and liars. Ultimately, they're just a more organized version of Raiders. Clint didn't want order, that was just his excuse to justify that he wanted what the settlers of Quincy had. If that was really Clint's view, he wouldn't have treated those who surrendered so violently. He just wanted to revel in the carnage and pillage the loot, just like a Raider. There's very little difference between the two factions, no matter what the Gunners like to tell themselves and others to the contrary.
well they do have structure but they do go by a set of basic ideals from what i could find. besides at least theres one random enconter where a raider is sad for her dead friend.

It naturally goes by a different set of moral standards based around the world going to crap, which, well...tends to make those standards not super great. Even the Brotherhood and factions who've got it more together and have better intentions are kind of meh by the way we in this era judge right and wrong.

After all the gunners complain about the car park being infested and had made several attempts to clear it out however they never got to before you turn up. They were more concerned about making sure that their place was relatively safe over making it a comfortable life for them. After all you hear about how they shoot down at the raiders in the quarry from the bypass to tell them they shouldn’t be messed with.

There is a great mod that turns Quincy into a settlement after you clear out the Gunners. Knowing you like to play the Minutemen and build settlements I wouldn't mind actually seeing what you could do with Quincy. That is definitely something I would want to see.

I have one small correction for you. There's a terminal (I forget whose) which talks about how Clint and the Gunners assaulted Quincy. They literally blew up the concrete support to the overpass, causing it to collapse. The Gunners then used this as a way to gain height advantage over the town.
The minutemen didn't defend the overpass because there was no access it to it anyways, that is, until the Gunners created one.
I think this is also why Clint received a lot of praise from Captain Wes. It was a genius plan executed perfectly.

This is my biggest gripe with the minutemen that such a great story mission opportunity was never made. Even if it might be to large for settlement and the enemies would reappear there just being a formal mission to take back the town with the minutemen should have been part of their quest line.

After the Gunners were taken out by the Minutemen, the other Gunners were worried about their dispatched unit, so they sent in reinforcements. After that, the story went on as the video explains.

@oxhorn I know this upload is 6 years old but I have to tip my hat to you; this video is simply brilliant. The way you wove in the characters and stories even the most casual Fallout 4 player has met with the (harder to find) detailed backstory of Quincy was done just right. The pathos you express at the death of a child. Your description of opposing leaders' world views, which goes beyond anything to be found in the terminals, was very insightful. For me, characterising them as short-term vs. long-term views helped turn a murky rationale for battle in to a clear one. Masterfully done. I truly appreciate it.
I don't share you're view of Colonel Hollis at all. Preston Garvey thinks of civilization and a better future, probably more than anyone else. But I saw in Hollis' actions, particularly his decision to reject Clint's offer of evacuating the town in exchange for no further deaths, a man concerned more with honor than the best interests of his charges. Hollis didn't even defer to Mayor Jackson for a decision. Whether or not Quincy's people should abandon their homes in exchange for their lives should've been his call (preferably with a quick referendum). Instead, Hollis got most of his command and most of his charges killed because he was angry at Clint's defection. Peace, liberty, and civilization is not possible without life. And there is a lot of uninhabited land in the Commonwealth. They'll have to fight ghouls or mole-rats or whatnot. But they'll at least have a chance. They never did against the Gunners.
I have two questions. Where did Colonel Hollis' regiment call home prior to this? I know Clint's forces were a detachment from Gunners' Plaza, but I don't know where the Minutemen lived. Second (and this is bigger), mercenaries, generally speaking, aren't really interested in real estate. Not enough to fight for it (that place doesn't look any good for salvage, either). They are businessmen and businessmen buy what they need. Killing people you haven't been paid to makes one a pariah, and pariahs don't find work. I can see them doing this to get back at Quincy if Jackson stiffed them on a job. Disproportionate and bad PR, but better than a land grab. No mention of such a thing. Some had to have hired Captain Wes' company to do this. But who then? I don't think a private individual would have the caps. The Institute? No, as I said in a comment to the HalluciGen video, the Institute doesn't hire Gunners. Kellogg does whatever their synths can't do. And they've already wiped out University Point with their Gen 2s, for all the good it did them. They'd do the same with Quincy. Raiders, Triggermen, and Atomists would take take Quincy themselves, if they wanted it or had some grudge. Some other settlement? I can certain see inter-communal warfare playing out like this. And it would explain the divisions in the Minutemen regiments if they came from different settlements that disliked each other. But consider the availables. Zeke's way too cool for that jive. Gwen McNamara probably hasn't even heard of Quincy. Jacob Orden's only concerned about his, erm, "business". Desdemona is more concerned with staying hid rather than avenging mob slain runners (assuming anyone from Quincy did any such thing). Kessler would withhold caravan services. Wiseman is too far away and would turn the other cheek. Hancock is certainly vindictive enough. But he would get creative, maybe grab some stealth boys and sack Jackson's house or otherwise humiliate him in front of his constituents. As for McDonough, see the Institute. Every other place is either a family farm or a bunch of unattended Mr. Handys. Seriously, who put the Gunners up to this?
It actually could make sense for the institute to do this. Picture this diamond city is the hub of the commonwealth and the institue has control of it and all of the people around it then a new town appears no point wasting recourses to try and take control of two towns to accomplish the same goal just get someone to pose as a rich surface dweller and pay the gunners to make it look like a regular hit when in reality it was taking out the competition.
I think you put in more effort than Bethesda in figuring out the Gunners' motivations. They behave like Raiders in the game, it makes no sense.
In fact, if we go off the notion that Gunners only do things for contracts and caps, the only reason for invading Quincy is if Mayor Jackson or some other Quincy resident owed them money for something and then refused to pay up.
cloudyvortex I definitely agree that Hollis should have talked to Mayor Jackson first. That needed to be discussed, not decided in 2 seconds.
As for needing motivation, I'm not so sure they always need it. Quincy may have been a location the brass wanted for themselves. It seems to be prosperous and growing. In a different comment, Fudgel suggested that the original force of the gunners may be located out of the CW entirely. Which makes sense considering we don't see high ranked officers and the CW is a hotspot for other people to come too.
Taking that approach, Quincy makes even more sense. If the gunners operation lay elsewhere, then they are having to transport troops, supplies, and ammunitions. Their current holdings in the CW couldn't sustain the amount of gunners that inhabit it. Maybe the brass decided it was time for them to set up properly. Taking DC would be extremely hard costly. Goodneighbor would be difficult and maybe not even worth it. Bunker Hill would have been horrible because the raiders would have been all over them. The rest of the settlements that are functioning aren't easily defensible once taken.
But then you have Quincy. With the overpass and already established walls, it looks very promising to defend. It's inhabited by settlers, not soldiers, and not many minuteman came to its defense. It's spacious and has room for growth, it's in a good location, and be fortified easily to make it even stronger. That's a perfect place to start establishing themselves more permanently.
Quincy as a barracks? Plausible, but I agree with the idea that the Gunners are foreign to the Commonwealth. Which is why I think they'd more likely take up land somewhere else. Stealing the Quincy folks land without provocation would make them a pariah and much harder to find work as mercenaries and provide much greater resistance whenever the Gunners want anything. Like Machiavelli said, it's safer to feared than loved, but it is crucial to avoid being hated. Unlike the Institute, who are at least descended from fellow Bay Staters, the Gunners and the Brotherhood are outsiders and already have humanity's xenophobic instincts to work against. The BoS understands that and, whatever else you may say about it, is trying to avoid the appearance of tyranny and cruelty. With this, the Gunners have insured they are seen only as invasive raiders and treated as such. There's a reason you never see any Gunners in D.C. The guards would probably shoot them on sight. They're lucky the Neighborhood Watch is more laid back and Winlock and Barnes were still worried enough not to terminate MacCready over his defection (the massacre may well had been the final straw for him, but he indicates that sort of thing was typical for the Gunners). There is no way the land was worth the political cost. Not when they could've taken Andrew Station. No potential customers are going to care about raiders or fear those who would slaughter them. I'm not saying its implausible that Gunner leadership would make such a stupid mistake. Humans in this world have proven themselves to be dumber than real humans on several occasions. I'm saying it's lazy writing to be so vague about antagonists' motivations that we are grasping at straws, we have a right to complain about it.
Could be as simple as the Gunners just wanted the overpass and when they tried to get on it they were fired upon so retaliated.
This was the toughest ingame fight for me and I was a level 40ish. Took me two whole in game days and wasted every single bit of my ammo. Totally worth the fight
If Quincy was never attacked, Fallout 4 would have been much more interesting.

Simon Lee I doubt that would happen. The minutemen don't actively seek conflict with the brotherhood unless you make enemies of them
After the shitty lore of FO4, I don't think I'll be giving Bethesda another chance.

It's pitty, that places like Quincy and University points aren't available as settlements after clearing. Of course we have mods, but it can be added in game. Maybe Bethesta make new update or new dlc and fix it.👌 Thank for many good materials and inspirations.

it's a cool series but where the gunners become their endless supplies of high quality laser and plasma weapons? I don't know because were pretty experimental even when the bombs dropped... there couldn't be that much out their...
Not to mention combar armour, fatigues, boots, helmets, ammo, food and drink.
Nicholas Cross ammo isn't all that hard to make actually. Heck even bullet proof vests can be made out of alternative materials. There is a vid somewhere I saw of one being made out of those vacume seal bags stuffed with fiberglass insulation, covered with flex seal spray and a thin tempered layer of steel. After that it's just cosmetics to make it look nice.
Same goes for allot of modern combat rifles.
Laser/plasma weapons would be the real challenge as according to all lore they were rare even before the war.
Handy Duncan There’s a mod which suggests that the Gunners serve a larger purpose. It also suggests why we see no Enclave in the game. Basically, what it suggests is that the Gunners actually serve the Enclave, and to cover their allegiance, they told a lie; that they were just a group of advanced guards for hire. This can also technically correct MacCreedy’s “Lie” about being a soldier.
I just realized Quincy reminds me of Old Haven from Borderlands 1. Both seem to be once decent cities in a dangerous wasteland until the inhabitants were killed or driven out by a large militaristic force and both locations are when the game really starts to get tough. These places are also kind of large including being able to explore the rooftops and probably not being too hard to get lost.

I know it's been three years but it happened in 2282 and the pc gets out of vault 111 in 2287 so it's actually 5 years. Before sole survivor gets out.

That's a good point what if the institute (father) paid the gunners to take out the rest of the minutemen before he released his parent. That way they wouldn't be around to influence him and he would find his way to the institute easier and join them

I just cleared Quincy today after watching you video. It makes it so much more interesting already knowing the lore of an area before going. I made sure to pick up the longs sons hat. Thanks oxhorn for another great video. I look forward to them. During my unwind from work.
I somehow stumbled into Quincy *waaaayyy* too early in my first playthrough and was legit in tears as I was trying to duck, dodge, bob, and weave my way out. It was horrible but I’d also be lying if I said it wasn’t absolutely hilarious. Like a train wreck, I guess

My current Minuteman build is a tweak of your metal general build who uses Tessa‘s fist and good intentions, and I’ve made it into his story that when he learned of Quincy, the first thing he did when he became general was rounded up a force and took it back

I just don’t understand why the Gunners would do this. I know, they’re bad guys, but they’re mercs. Not Raiders. So why would they do something like this?
It’s the same reason why the various raider groups tried to take over multiple buildings. As you find out through clearing several places you can see that they do it just to control more territory. More territory that you own means the easier you can move people and resources around. This was close to their main base so probably saw it either as a threat or a site to take for supplies.
I think it might have added to the character of preston if he was presented as having PTSD because of quincy, lexington and concord

I’m early in the video but I wonder about Sturges being replaced as a synth and contributing to the destruction of Quincy, but without further instruction by the institute he is forced to stay with Preston, now knowing the MM aren’t much of a threat. He must defect during our time with us, or in the museum so as not to side with the institute during the main quest.

I love the layout and idea of Quincy as a town. I wish we could either have rebuilt it with new unique people, OR it had been fine when we first start the game and then at a point, it gets sacked. I think that would have made the minutemen quest line more impactful. Meeting the people, doing their quests, and maybe getting a home there would have really built a connection with another group of people. And having that destroyed unexpectedly would have been extremely impactful. I think that would have made the minutemen matter a lot more and give reason to why we become the general. Our friends and new home are destroyed and the minutemen failed to answer. So we take up the mantel to make sure that never happens again.

In my game, I waited until I had an artillery battery at every settlement close to Quincy, then strolled up in there, threw about a dozen artillery smoke grenades, and relished in all the flying body parts.
I do have one question, and not sure if you answered in the videos, but have you thought about where the Gunners come from? I like the idea of one of the theory out there that they came from Vault 75, where they trained the children to become smarter and stronger, and at the age of eighteen, I think it was, depending on a few tests, they were either killed or become new researchers or I think solders. But at some point in time some of the children had enough and escaped and become the Gunners. Which explains why they know so much about the Vaults, and use them. But I would like to hear what you think, where do you think come from?
Liam Lane I agree with that theory, as I think it makes the most sense, at least more sense than the gunners being an outside faction
Liam Lane I like to think of them being a tiny segment of the brotherhood that abused their power and were kicked out, but in their revolt they stole some suits of power armour, then they were armed with laser weaponry, the leaders used the power armour and from then on they were just raiders. I like this idea because it would make more brotherhood quests like killing some gunners and at the end you storm their HQ to retrieve the stolen equipment and end their regime. I don't like how they're treated as mercs, they should just be raiders, evil brotherhood members. It also makes sense how they would even survive the revolt because the brotherhood was in a bad situation in the mid west and back home so they did all of this when the brotherhood were weak. It would be poetic justice, they thought they could do whatever they want and screw the brotherhood over but when they become stronger with a whole army and they get stormed, it's like sweet revenge.
