Patrick Ewing never won an NBA championship. Here's what left him empty-handed.

  • This one stings. A surface-level summary of 1990s NBA history is basically: “Michael Jordan won the championships he was around to win, and Hakeem Olajuwon got the other ones in the middle.” Part of the reason the series Untitled exists is to better explain that era. With details and context, we hope to show that those oversimplified truths hang on some complex set-ups, near misses, and fascinating stories. Patrick Ewing’s Knicks wrote several of those stories; perhaps the most heartbreaking.
Ewing spent almost all of his legendary career in New York, and almost all of that stint competing for a championship. But, yes, Jordan interfered, albeit not as decisively as the short version of the story would have you think. Those Bulls were underdogs at one point, and even after that, came an inch here or a second there from losing to Ewing and company. Those inches and seconds describe some of the most sickening moments in the history of Knicks fandom.
Sickening, too, were the fates of Ewing’s teams that didn’t have to (or get to) face Jordan: The ones that fell to the Pacers, the Heat, and of course Hakeem Olajuwon’s Rockets in the brutal 1994 Finals.
Patrick Ewing retired without a championship, but we hope this episode of Untitled will help you appreciate how excellent he was and how rivals, fate, and bad timing conspired to stop him. You can’t tell this ringless story in a simple sentence or two.

Patrick didn’t like to share the ball, became too much of an outside shooter and was a disappointment defensively for someone of his size and ability.

The John Starks game, the Charles Smith game, the bench clearing brawl and the 9 points in 8 seconds are all seared into the memories of all Knicks fans. That is the kind of crazy bounces of the ball it took to prevent what seemed like a certain championship for Ewing.

The game 7 starks game was heartbreaking. If starks even shot 30 percent the Knicks win. They were actually leading going into the 4th. He actually hurt the team b/c Riley had him keep shooting. He was 0 for 11 in the 4th quarter. He had a brilliant performance in game 6. That was starks. Very streaky . As one scouting report said about starks in his 1st full year w/ the Knicks as an undrafted cba player. " starks emerged as a tiger good defensively has a nice outside shot & can slash to the basket. Not talking all star here just a nice find " I often wonder & starks was my favorite player too & if he had hit that 3 in game 6 at the buzzer given his going from grocery clerk to all star that year & being the guy Ewing needed to finally win a title & bring that elusive title back to NYC they'd be making a movie about him. Someone undrafted that worked so hard & never gave up even being a standout on the Knicks & guarding mj in his prime as well as anyone else could plus that dunk the all star selection was amazing enough. Anyway that sorta was the problem w/ starks way to streaky from one game to the next to be a reliable long term 2nd option to Ewing. A lot of really bad back office descions like letting two young all star quality point guards go in rod Strickland & mark Jackson rookie of the year. Also the drafts after Ewing when they were a 20 a year team w/ not much talent to select from in 86 87 . Ewing also had zero stability for almost all his 20s. He had quite a few different coaches all of his 20s til Riley. Here in lies the biggest problem. Riley no doubt is a great hof coach. For someone so smart he really made the worst decision which the gm followed cause it was showtime 5 ring coach pat. He brought as much star quality to NYC as any big time player. Here was the biggest blunder that destroyed the Knicks chances to beat the mj bulls. Charles Smith. In no way will I trash him or bash him the way fans did after 93 game 5. A game the Knicks had to have for home court vs the bulls advantage this time & the Knicks were pretty unbeatable in the garden. 27-0 run at home.
Riley s problem was no way in the backcourt. He needed a shooting guard who was a perennial all star or a borderline hof or hof guy. Every top player had a hof or perennial all star at their side. Some had 2. So Riley sees this team & decides to make them almost completely defensive. I think he was thinking a bad boys in the east having faced them in the finals. Problem was the pistons also had serious scorers too. That's why they were the only team to beat Larry magic & mj. A feat no other team would ever accomplish again.
So he had Ewing Oakley & Xavier McDaniel as his ferocious scary defense back court & x man could score too. They also had a young Mason off the bench. Their backcourt was the leader of the team rookie of the year & great point guard in mark Jackson who wasn't even in his prime yet. Wilkins was the starting 2 guard. That's where the problem was. Gerald wasn't his big brother. He didn't really have an impact. Starks was the back up & probably should have stayed in that spot as 6th man. If he was hot keep him in & in bad moments pull him. I'm going by how Riley saw the design of his team. All defense but u need more than Ewing to score every night. So for some reason Riley fell in love w/ Smith. He did avg 19 ppg but this was on the clippers. At the time they had nobody. So 19ppg on a horrible team doesn't say a whole lot. Plus they didn't need another possible scorer in the backcourt. Xavier was a better scorer & better defender than Smith. Ewing was the scorer .
Riley doesn't re sign Xavier who was the difference in that 7 game series vs the bulls. Mj even said that was the 1st time he was actually worried. To finally win a title than lose it in an upset to the Knicks would have def been tough embarrassing & slightly tarnish that 3 peat if the bulls fought so hard for a title & to not repeat. Anyway the Smith trade did nothing but hurt the backcourt overall & actually further damages the backcourt. Jackson was perfect as the Knicks pg. So they got the aging past his prime doc rivers. Wasn't sorry to see Wilkins go as he didn't do anything to help Ewing. Starks again could be so brilliant or God awful. No in between. They really should have kept that 92 game 7 team together for another year.
In 93 they may have gotten farther to the ecf first time Ewing had gotten past the 2nd round. It's misleading as they didn't face the bulls in that 2nd round. They actually did worse in 93. After taking the first 2 games at home they got demolished in Chicago. The weakness of rileys deal was shown bright that Smith just couldn't get it done. Not even just the last play but a stronger scorer would have dunked that ball. As he got stuffed excruciatingly the 1st couple times all the bulls swarmed . Too bad he didn't dunk it at first chance or try to kick it back out. I have to wonder if he was fouled. Jordan ran skipping outta there as the Knicks not only couldn't win in Chicago but usually got destroyed. Some serious mental block there. That they noy only couldn't win it was a destruction. Even in 94 w/o mj they couldn't win in Chicago. The bulls were so lucky to pull that game out. The famous pippen quits & kucok nails it at the buzzer. The Knicks insanely came back 21 down starting the 4th. All on the back of Ewing. So all the plays down low were of course always gonna go to Ewing. So having another big man in there who couldn't defend was awful. If McDaniel at that spot & w/ homecourt .

@@nattyps3160 Actually the Knicks were NOT leading going into the fourth of the seventh game. The Knicks only had brief leads that game, even if Houston was in control most of the way. But I do really think his would be game winning three point shot goes in at the end of Game #6, had if Hakeem not gotten his mere fingertips on it, and blocked the shot too.

@freakyfornash I am only going by memory of that game 7 as I never could watch it again it was so painful lol. I had watched every single game of 93-94 & I thought the Knicks would at least easily blow through the east esp given mj retired. I think the biggest worry was when starks who had been an all star that year seemd to have finally gotten more solid. He was pretty short for a SG but did not at all have the experience or game to be the floor general pg. So when he got hurt in March of 94 freakishly during a foul shot slipped on something at around half court & he tore his acl & came back way to soon. I believe he returned 2 weeks early. He also was never the same in terms of his really incredible jumping ability either. The Knicks really should have waited for him to return after the nets series. It was the 1st round & the nets really were not a threat. Ewing was ejected in game 2 early & destroyed them. They beat them easily in 4. Starks only started to return to form around the end of the pacers series. The west had so much fire power but seeing Seattle get stomped in the 1st round then the sun's were gone as was San Antonio Houston was the team I felt the Knicks had the best shot at but unfortunately olajuwon went next level vs San Antonio making David Robinson the leagues best scorer look like a hs kid. Dream was that scary great. This was bad news for the Knicks esp when people were shocked how hard a time they had w/ Jordan less Chicago & they barely got by the pacers. The Knicks def were a team that didn't have that killer instinct. They were up 2-0 on both the bulls & pacers. That hue Hollins call in game 5 saved them. Now they took 1 out of 2 in Houston speaking hom3 court. Sadly they relaxed at home & allowed a rookie Sam Cassell to beat them in one of the 3 straight games in ny. They should hsve finished Houston off at home. What truly sux Is game 6 was not a must win for the Knicks as Houston was the ones down 3-2. If starks had his miserable game 7 in game 6 the Knicks were still alive. Starks by himself almost won the title in game 6 scoring 16 or 20 pts in the 4th. He was so on fire that of dream didn't get his finger on that 3 the Knicks were Champs. In game 7 the rest of the Knicks played much better but now starks was God awful. It's really sad b/c if starks performance was switches from 7 to 6 they win. Ewing was their best player but sadly the rockets best player was at his position & dream was not just the better center than Ewing but the best player in all of the NBA winning the mvp & defensive player of the year plus of course outplayed every center in 94 & 95. He killed Robinson Ewing & in 95 destroyed a physically much younger Shaq in 95 in an embarrassing sweep. The Knicks for some reason just didn't have thar killer instinct as I said vs the bulls pacers & rockets each time they were up early in all 3 series. I think the last best chance the Knicks had was in 97. Sadly that ridiculous bench clearing brawl the league was ridiculous in suspending Ewing for just walking around half court when the brawl was well over. They really stuck to that " don't leave ur seat " beyond belief. Also the league decided to split up the Knicks best players in the next two games giving them no chance. I'd rather the Knicks were given the choice to allow the suspensions to play out Over one game instead of 2. The heat were a far inferior team were about to be put away in game 6. Instead of a final Knicks bulls ecf where Ewing finally had some extra fire power the bulls just blew the heat away to win their 5th title once they desposed of the jazz. I will say w/ olajuwon having that insane 94 & 95 I'd love to have seen if mj didn't retire in 94 & come back late I'm 95 if the bulls would have beat the rockets. The bulls had no center & dream really was on a level very close to Jordan's. He had that incredible of a year esp in 94.

@@nattyps3160 I'll admit that I couldn't watch most of the 7th game in 1994 (which I fell asleep during), knowing the Knicks were doomed when they blew Game #6. Starks did catch fire in the finals, even if he needed time to get back to form after his knee injury. I'd also rather they had taken their chances with Seattle, who probably makes the final round if they didn't get upset by Denver in the first. The 97 Knicks team was really stacked, and likely would have given the Bulls problems that series which never happened. The 98 team could have made some noise if not for Ewing's injury, what with the team being a spent force by the time he returned, which was too little too late by then unfortunately.

It really shouldn't though. It's stupid how far the media has taken the rings argument. I think you can factor in winning and or rings but there's so many other people involved to win a championship.
Patrick Ewjng 1st of all is one of the top 3 College players along with Alcindor and Walton, maybe David Thompson in the discussion..Ewing was a fluke bad pass by teammate of beating North Carolina. Two years later Villanova has to shoot 75% from the outside to edge Georgetown by 2 points. My point being Ewing was a hair away from 3 National Titles.
In the pros he didn't have the supporting cast, plain and simple. Give Patrick Ewing Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman and this video would be about Michael Jordan coping with no titles.
Jerry West 1 title? You can't name 5 guards better than him. Elgin Baylor? Nobody better at forward.

I still argue to this day the 97 team was the best team of the Ewing era. They still played the tough defense hallmarked from the Riley era, but it was a better offensive team too. It was Pat's last elite year before the injury in 98. He finally had a guard who could create his own shot in Houston, and after a slow start trying to fit in Houston really got it going late in the year and in the playoffs. LJ while not what he once was, was still a low post force and was developing that 3 pt shot. Starks was Sixth Man of the Year. Childs/Ward rotating at PG. That team was well equipped to face the Bulls. That series would have went 7 for sure.

Plus these Knicks got the best of the Bulls during the regular season. If they gave them a hrd time in the 1996 playoffs, imagine what would have happened in the 1997 playoffs... Miss Wedding dress Rodman was having the hardest time against LJ on the defensive end, while she was having the hardest time against Oakman on her defensive end!

The video is mostly spot on. Like many loyal Knicks fans, I cheered and watched frustrating loses from every Patrick Ewing game and run. From the Knicks often getting owned by the Boston Celtics until that iconic game 5 victory of all places - at the Boston Garden. From not being able to beat the Pistons until the Pistons were old and tired in the 1992 playoffs. And of course, The Bulls. Then their rivalries against the Miami Heat and Pacers. On a competitive level as a fan, I will say thank you to Patrick and the supporting cast for good memories even if my beloved Knicks never won that coveted title. Looking back, I blame incompetent ownership and management. It's hard to succeed and form some type of solid stability when Patrick had eight different head coaches. And about the press saying that Patrick never had a number two? Xavier McDaniel fell right into the Knicks laps. And they blew it! If there was anytime as a Knicks fan I was absolutely pissed, that was it! Overall, I will always appreciate what Patrick did for the Knicks. He had flaws, but the Garden used to be on fire when he played.

During Ewing's prime (1986 through 1998 - made the all star team eleven of those twelve seasons), he had an all star teammate three times: Mark Jackson in 1989, Charles Oakley in 1994, and John Starks in 1994. When you look at the makeup of NBA championship teams, essentially all of them (shoutout to Hakeem in 1994 and Dirk in 2011) have at least two hall of fame caliber players. Really hard to win when you don't have a great supporting cast. Not to mention, Ewing's prime overlapped with the primes of Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon. When you consider those two things (and some major gaffes by the Knicks, Ewing included), not surprising at all that Patrick Ewing ended up without a ring. Still amazing player regardless. Love this series!!!
