This episode was exactly why I can’t tolerate the Stannis the Mannis stuff. Anyone who would do that to their own child doesn’t deserve anything, let alone being king. He literally can’t seem to do anything without the red witch’s influence. The worse thing was afterwards, people were actually defending this because they really believe Stannis should do what it took to be King, even sacrificing his ten year old child to an excruciating death.

The sacrifice of Shireen is beyond words. For me the Red Wedding is small potatoes in comparison. There is no forgiveness for doing something like this to your own children. After this episode, there was no possiblility of rooting for Stannis anymore.
When you guys started reacting to this series, Shireen's death was the single moment I worried for Nikki the most, far more than The Red Wedding. It breaks my heart.
Additionally - Roose Bolton, Lord Clegane (father of Gregor and Sandor) and, sadly, Robert Baratheon. Not so sure Aerys was the best dad in Westeros either...edited to add Randyll Tarly, based on the story Sam told Jon about how he wound up at the Wall. It was either that or a hunting accident is, I believe, how Lord Tarly phrased the choice.
In my opinion... Shireen's murder is far worse than the Red Wedding. This was a completely innocent child. She had never done anything to harm anyone and she was murdered in a horrific and painful way by her own father. That actress did an amazing job because her screams haunted my dreams for weeks after I saw this... Rest in peace sweet Shireen... You deserved so much more. Also, immediately after Melisandre says 'Lord of Light show us the way!' Selyse changes her mind. This makes me think the Lord of Light did not want this and that was his way to try and intervene. Wither way this is the most sickening thing on this show imo...
I hate it so much when they "sacrifice" Shireen... that it helps me to think... well, it was a nice opportunity for a young actress to play something intense that she might never have in any other project.
Stacey E I'm sure they would have, but they weren't there so that isn't really an argument. I mean the Red Wedding was a conspiracy/betrayal by enemies during war. It is still terrible horrific, but it isn't the same as a child being murdered by their father in an incredibly painful way. Her death was slow, painful, and horrifying to her. Most of the people at the Red Wedding were mercifully killed quickly. The main characters died a bit slower and more painfully, but I would still say burning alive is worse. Cat and Robb brought that upon themselves, but Talisa, baby Ned, and Grey Wind were innocent and their deaths hurt me the most in that.
The actress playing Shireen. What a performance. Those screams, when you don’t think they can become more painful, they get insane. Incredible. Incredibly scary and wrong, but wow.
The burning scene might actually be the most brutal scene in the series for me. Especially since you could imagine her feeling of being betrayed by her dad before being condemned to die horrifically.
I've watched the Red Wedding several times, and other episodes still ahead of you that are grim viewing. I've never rewatched this one. That poor lovely little girl. That young actress was far too good in that role.
NialasDubh I have rewatched this episode, but after the first time, that scene is always at least muted, if not skipped outright. I can only stand to view the scene at all because, like Sansa’s wedding night, the act itself is offscreen. Hearing it is just too much. And this is from a guy who can watch the D-Day scene of ‘Saving Private Ryan’ without flinching.
@@anonmg1 To be fair D-day scene from Saving Private Ryan was very tame compared to many of the things (including this episode) in the game of thrones. Gory battlefield casualties on soldiers are never as visually heinous as ones done again innocents .
That girl has to be big some day She has so much talent I watched the episode for the first time today and I almost stopped watching because I needed a break
I really had an attachment with Shireen. I really did and what they did to her was awful just awful. I truly believe that Shireen would be a better ruler than Stannis.
@@garlantyrell6368 Stannis would have been a terrible King, Renly was a massive redflag and what happened to Shireen showed everyone else who liked him how monstrous he was. The "greater good" is a convenient excuse in GOT to do horrible things
Stephen Dillane, the actor playing Stannis is reported to have struggled in his mind with this character, finding it more difficult to portray him as the story continued. It will be a given that Davos will be as upset as you guys!
What a brilliant actor Stephen Dillane, I'm fucking love him. He could show how even such straight, cold, not affected by emotions character like Stannis was dying inside through what's happened. You can tell that he loves his daughter and that was probably the hardest decision he has ever done. btw I don't think Stannis send Davos away, because Davos could prevent this, obviously he couldn't do anything. I think he send him away just because he didnt want him to see what was going to happen, because knew that Davos loves Shireen.
Stephen Dillane has gone on record to say that he didn't like playing Stannis because he wasn't given enough of a motivation for why he did the things he did. I understand that he just wasn't given enough from the show runners to make him comfortable to play as an actor...he made it sound pretty unpleasant. Understandable.
Everyone is upset about them switching sides of the couch and its obvious it has to do with the new blanket on the couch. Steven is Jon and Nikki is Dany. It was foreshadowed in a couple seasons earlier in the Halloween episode. It is known.
I've been looking forward to this reaction for the Drogon scene alone, but was also worried that Nikki wouldn't make it through the Shereen execution. I think that's the first time I've seen Steven react that badly to something, too. I'm not surprised though - to me, this is the worst, most horrible scene in the whole show. Not only was she a child, but such a sweet, kind one, too. Not a bad bone in her body. Her screams as she was burned just made me sick to my stomach and it doesn't get any easier on repeat viewings. Any sympathy you have for Stannis is gone completely here. How could he ever be a good King if he can't even be a good father?
Hope you are OK. Mythology buffs will tell you that in the Illiad, the Greek King Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia to the gods by burning her alive, in order to get the right winds to sail to Troy. George Martin was inspired by a lot of history and myth in writing this story. RIP Shireen. How will Davos react when he finds out?
Except that Shireen is still alive and well as of the end of the last book. G.R.R may have been involved in the production of the tv show, but these events are tv created not from the books.
GRRM has said that he wasn't inspired by the Illiad to write Stannis. In an interview he said that his influence for Stannis was the Roman Emperor Tiberius.
He didn't though, GRRM has said numerous times that he's allowed D&D to create their own ending for the TV show that will be different from the ending in the books.
Shania Shireen is at the wall with Melisandre. Stannis won't be burning her in the books because which idiot takes his family to a siege? Oh right, in the show world every character is an idiot. Stannis had the worst character assassination of everyone. He's the type of character who, if he burnt Shireen, he would ask himself to be brought to justice.
The Mad King, Steven, first of his name :) They can't unleash hell on the whole city. It seems to just be a part of the city; the former masters and their supporters.
Also... as I watched these as they aired, I would scream at my tv, arguing to the dark, paused screen.... berating the show for different offenses... and then re-watch the episode immediately afterward. Game of Thrones is the best thing ever filmed; in terms of characters, scenery, direction, CGI, acting, costumes, dialogue, story lines, and character arcs... a massive web of violence and frustrations and triumphs and heartbreaks and horrors and love and magic and suspense. Just bloody brilliant.
Nikki's so funny! She was crying when Stannis is burning his daughter but then as soon as the Sons of the Harpy attack, she says, "Burn Them, Burn Them All" just like the Mad King...lol
19:40 that's the same thing that happened when drogon was eating and "attacked" danny and that's why drogon left all this time because in that time Danny got scared of him and he sensed that, the same thing when he came when Danny was upset and she finds him in the top of the pyramid he sensed her fear , didn't let her touch him and flew away again and now (19:40) she didn't even flinch and that's why drogon accepted her again
I don't know. This is a very sad episode buuuuuuut Red Wedding is so intensive (not only sad, breaks the hope of Starks and justice). At the end, amazing TV show. ❤
@@mynamesaj BOOK SPOILERS..... He has not as of yet. Stannis is marching on the Boltons at the point the books cut off, but Shireen is not with him. She is still at Castle Black with her mom. Some people theorize that he will in the future prior to battling the Others
@@proudsaiyanprince2651 disagree. I know that Stannis in the show is different from one in the book. But that alone doesn't mean it's bad. Stannis was one of my favourite character in the show. He had a consistent character sketch - a generally brave, honourable battle commander who does bad things only because of Melissandre's influence. He is consistently good and noble otherwise, even goes beyond the wall seeing that may be his duty. Just does terrible things under her influences and dies a sad death when he finally realises it was all for nothing. His death was one of my favourite deaths of the show.
That they didn't even have to show Shireen...that just her screaming was enough...epic epic scene! Again, sooooo many feels!! Jaime & Bron! Jon made it home! Arya almost got busted! And Ep 10 is yet to come!!
the fact that the show is invoking such emotion from you, for better or worst, it's a sign of good story telling. We SHOULD be invested and be affected by the results, there's a interview with GRRM where he says as much. His intention is to make us feel like these things are really happening.
@@themessenger2948 It's good storytelling because it's tragic, and there's plenty of stuff leading up to this moment to explain why it happens. It's not torture porn. Stannis is selling his soul, sacrificing a daughter to win a war he's fought for years and failed. That doesn't make it right, but it's damn good storytelling cause there was a LOT leading to this moment.
Now I know you guys hate Stannis by now, but have you considered Melissandre's actions? She's the one that's been coercing him all this time!!! That's the reason the child was locked up in the first place!!!
True, but people already hated her, However Stannis' love for his daughter was what made people like him, so for him to burn her was as much of a betrayal as a murder

i had forgotten how utterly visceral and emotional that Shireen scene was. i'm right there with you, Nikki. i remember that i cried the first time, but i'd forgotten how much and how hard... now it's happening again.
Yup, another episode of "Game of Insanity"... with one of the hardest to watch moments EVER, the awful, horrible death of Shireen... and a few minutes later, one the most amazing ones, "baby Drogon" coming to rescue his mommy and Daenerys embracing her awesomeness by riding it.
I was worried about both of them. I thought Nikki might have a breakdown and that Steve was going to punch the screen in a vain but sincere attempt to throttle Stannis. ETA: My own original reaction to that scene? Shaking my head from side to side while saying, "no. Oh no. No, no, no. No, no, no, no, no, NO! NO! NO! NO! NOOOOOOO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Fuck you, Stannis."
Remember WAY back when you first started watching GoT, Nikki? I think your exact words were something like, "I'm fine as long as it's not animals or kids." So, I've been dreading this episode ever since...
When news of what Stannis had done to his only daughter reached me, I was shocked. I couldn't believe that this noble and brave man had done such a despicable thing. So tragic, such.... chaos. My heart goes out to Ser Davos, he really loved that brat. Now if you'll excuse me I've got things to do, ladders to climb.
14:18 Yeah, I don't even had kids and I needed a good 20 or so minutes after that scene to collect myself before continuing to watch. Can't imagine how it must feel for parents
You have to admire the directors. One of the most painful scenes in television had to be followed by something so fantastic that you would tune in next week again. Had that scene with Princess Shireen been the end of the episode I'm sure millions of people would have been too sour to tune in again, my entire family was. Had that scene with Drogon have happened earlier nothing would have had enough wow factor to let that sour taste subside a bit. That scene was so risky that if it had been scripted any other way it could have spelled disaster for the show.
100% agree. So glad they put the scenes in that order to give us something else to focus on, something to cling to hope-wise, like how Season 1 Episode 9's crushing "Baelor" was followed by Episode 10's end with the birth of the dragons and Jon Snow getting his chance to venture beyond the wall to find Benjen, and the Red Wedding's follow up episode that gave some small relief when Arya killed that Frey soldier and the Hound protected (and was continuing to protect) her, so we felt at least fairly certain she'd be okay and would survive, at least for the time being, plus Daenery's acceptance by the people she freed, Jon's survival of his mission returning to Castle Black alive, even Jaime's survival and return (with Brienne) to King's Landing. There's always some hope they give us to cling to after tragedy.
@@nostalgicbliss5547 yeah, fire like most things is neutral. Just an object like everything else, it's the wielder that determines it's use. Beautiful and powerful.
At first I was very salty they decided to move on after Shireen as though her death wasn't important enough to end the episode on. I had to pause for quite a while to cry it out and calm down. Even now when watching I still get a bit mad they would 'overshadow' her death with the return of Drogon. I have never really thought of this episode the way you described, but it makes so much sense. Thank you so much for this. Now I can finally stop being angry and accept the fact that ending on Shireen would have been just too depressing and dark. Drogon really does bring us back up again. Not fully for me, but it helped ease the pain.
@@samansu9106 I totally feel you, I was wrecked at that scene too. Hearing a little girl scream as her father's burns her to death is just fucking tragic beyond belief. Props to the show for being that gritty but even more props to Kerry Ingram for a performance that was hauntingly good.
It's crazy to see Stannis and his wife switch sides regarding their relationship with their daughter, at the last second. Looked like at first Stannis might stop it then his wife says it's the right thing to do, and then suddenly finally she's against it and Stannis stands firm. When she runs toward Shireen and then falls and wails after she dies, that got me almost as much as the sound of Shireen's screams.
All i could think when i saw this was uploaded was "oh no"....then i saw the thumbnail and thought yupp there is the exact same reaction i had....hugs hugs. I still can't listen to this scene .....also ps the mad king was aerys the second

Did you two switch sides of the couch so Steven could be on the Stark side of the blanket and Nikki could be on the Targaryen side? Lol! Also, Nikki was a total Targaryen when chanting "Burn them all! Burn them all!" Oh, and the Mad King's name was Aerys Targaryen not Aegon. I'm so excited when I see your reactions go up, too bad I normally have to wait to watch because I teach during the day
Actually, i'm pretty convinced that Stannis did this monstrous and inhuman act because he's totally believing on this Melissandra's bullshit about prophecy and the fact he's the chosen one to lead during the long night wich is approaching. For him, it's not a selfish or ambitious thing to do for him. He's seeing it as the ultimate sacrifice for the kingdoms. Usually, the honest people become the most fanatics because they're dead hard convinced of the justice of their cause. Once again, it's the proof how a ideology can brainwash you until human alienation. The Shireen 's death is the saddest moment of the all show IMO, worse than the red wedding :-(
Adding to your comment it reminds me a lot of the trojan war saga where Agammenon had to sacrifice his daughter to appease the goddess Artemis so they could sail for Troy. I'm going through GOT for the first time at the mo so I don't know what happens after but I do know it didn't end well for Agammenon, his wife killed him on his return from Troy for revenge.
It's entirely a selfish act when you consider that it's basically all a matter of ego. Stannis has convinced himself that he's the one person who's best to rule Westeros, and so anything he does in that regard is justified. No normal person would be so willing to believe that they were a chosen messiah that they would go this far. Melisandre of course gets a big share of the blame, but he's almost as bad as she is. The two of them are megalomaniacs that have convinced themselves of their own righteousness, it's very a realistic form of evil that can influence many people more than they realise.
I'm glad you noticed the guy with his own needle. He was a water dancer like Syrio. The Shireen death is just horrific. I think they knew they couldn't' end an episode on that note. Hugs guys!

That girl who played Shireen ... what a performance. We literally don't see anything bad at all, but the set up and the sound put it alongside the Red Wedding for me in terms of impact at the time, all despite the character having less than 20 minutes of screen time in total.

Shireen's death was horrible, heartbreaking. Well done making it through that. For me it's the worst thing that happened on the show. And there's a lot of other bad things. But a child being burnt alive? That was really hard to watch and always upsets me. Such a sweet girl too.

This little girl actress COMP,LETELY SOLD IT. Those screams were real AF, and traumatized me more than any other episode.
You say that like they would not have murdered Rickon and Brandon had they been in the room.
Samansu Oh, I see. So stabbing a 3rd trimester baby through it's mommy's stomach is far less worse? smh

Intro teaser: elation
Me: trying to remember what happened this episode 🤔
hahahaha, thats game of thrones, cry, laugh, celebrate all in one episode
I completely forgot about Princess Shireen. Rewatching it again, I'm with Steven, it pissed me off horribly. RIP Princess. ❤
Please upload E10 in 2 parts. Keep up the great work!!
@@anonmg1
To be fair D-day scene from Saving Private Ryan was very tame compared to many of the things (including this episode) in the game of thrones. Gory battlefield casualties on soldiers are never as visually heinous as ones done again innocents .
I'm the opposite. The Red Wedding is the only scene I cannot rewatch. I loved Robb too much.
That girl has to be big some day
She has so much talent
I watched the episode for the first time today and I almost stopped watching because I needed a break
Nothing good about agreeing to advertise such violence
The least I wanted is that some Baratheron soldier put an arrow through Shireen to put her out of her misery.
And then put one through Stannis for doing something that horrible.
Stephen Dillane, the actor playing Stannis is reported to have struggled in his mind with this character, finding it more difficult to portray him as the story continued. It will be a given that Davos will be as upset as you guys!
Nikki's reaction to all the horse abuse gets me every time. It's like they're doing it just for her at this point.
Episode 9, here we go :D
Edit : No, Winter is not officially here quite yet :)
PlacidDragon Pretty sure Summer's end was announced during a small council meeting in S2E1.
@Mike Liossis
all i can say is.... raven and color.... cant say more than that, dont want to spoil even something as "insignificant" as that :)
PlacidDragon that’s how long these dam seasons are when and if winter comes it’s gonna be longer then summer... ( and yes I am caught up)
Yes, they are officially in Autumn
Mike Liossis Autumn :-)
Just started the video so confused, why yoll on different sides lol
kyle crichton how did I not notice that
Terell Chapman Like me, you don't suffer from OCD, unlike all these other people in the comments.
It is known
@@BhBc8f8 so you are trying to say they are blood related?
It is known
Shania Monde , yes but GRRM shared his plans for Shireen with the show. We’ll find out next book. Any year now 😀
GRRM has said that he wasn't inspired by the Illiad to write Stannis.
Episode 9s.... never disappoints. Nikki has cried more this season than previous seasons. 😂
TheBongReyes, yes it's a good thing she now has a large supply of Kleenex.
i thought there is a hair on my mobile and i tried to removed it. 🙄
"Having daughters and being a father that shit made me angry."
Badass dad.
The Mad King was named Aerys, not Aegon. :D
The Mad King, Steven, first of his name :)
They can't unleash hell on the whole city. It seems to just be a part of the city; the former masters and their supporters.
Aerys the Second to be precise
Also... as I watched these as they aired, I would scream at my tv, arguing to the dark, paused screen.... berating the show for different offenses... and then re-watch the episode immediately afterward.
Nikki you are such a trooper you make me cry just seeing your your crying makes me cry love you both
Nikki's so funny! She was crying when Stannis is burning his daughter but then as soon as the Sons of the Harpy attack, she says, "Burn Them, Burn Them All" just like the Mad King...lol
john by john there is big difference between burning a little girl, and torching pro-slavery terrorist mofos
@@Nandrall18-25 I think John's too stupid to know the difference, just look at his face
"Can we save the horse plz" hard cut to a horse burning to death. I'm dead😂😂😂
this was the closest the show ever had me to quitting, red wedding was bad but this is wayyyy worse
Yeah. What the show runners did to Stannis's character is appalling.
I don't know. This is a very sad episode buuuuuuut Red Wedding is so intensive (not only sad, breaks the hope of Starks and justice). At the end, amazing TV show. ❤
Did he not do that I'm the books?
The actress for shereen was so good her death still gives chills...
No, Nikki, wrong side.. my OCD!
THIS
Ya, we can officially blame Nikki sitting on the wrong side for Shereen's death. : (
i hate change... :(
This channel is "Nikki and Steven React", not "Steven and Nikki React"! Change back to the correct side! :D
They're sitting the same as always ... you must have just tripped UA-cam's new video "flip" feature by accident.
Just because you feel bad for a character while they're being tortured, doesn't mean it's good storytelling.
@@rrael I meant overall.
@@AeneasGemini And that's all showrunners fault they wanted to get rid of Stannis quickly...
well Melisandre isnt Shireen's parent, Stannis is

This is not a game. I haven't even watched this yet because I'm very uncomfortable with the seating situation. This is episode 9! Don't we have enough to worry about. I feel like I'm in one of those videos where the baby doesn't recognize their dad cause he shaved off his beard. Waaaah!
Crosby Taylor ...Except you're not a baby.
@@Prince_the_One if you knew me you might think otherwise. Also my comment was imho clearly meant only as a friendly ribbing and not as a serious complaint. However if that was not as evident as I thought, I would like to thank you for the chance to clarify.
Crosby, I correctly guessed that your post was ironic. I thought it was pretty funny.
i had forgotten how utterly visceral and emotional that Shireen scene was. i'm right there with you, Nikki. i remember that i cried the first time, but i'd forgotten how much and how hard... now it's happening again.
The majesty of seeing Dany fly away on top of Drogo is amazing 🐉
Yup, another episode of "Game of Insanity"... with one of the hardest to watch moments EVER, the awful, horrible death of Shireen... and a few minutes later, one the most amazing ones, "baby Drogon" coming to rescue his mommy and Daenerys embracing her awesomeness by riding it.
I was legit worried about Nikki with this episode. This show man...this show.
Joshua Lerch i was more worried about Steven.
I was worried about both of them. I thought Nikki might have a breakdown and that Steve was going to punch the screen in a vain but sincere attempt to throttle Stannis.
ETA: My own original reaction to that scene? Shaking my head from side to side while saying, "no. Oh no. No, no, no. No, no, no, no, no, NO! NO! NO! NO! NOOOOOOO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fuck you, Stannis."
Nikki being upset by the HORSES burning, has me worried for her later on this episode. (Only 4 minutes in as of now lol)
Well... as you expected!
Has me worried for her in the next season
Jennifer W yep but it will be something sad, not horrible like this...
It's funny how fire was used to consume Shireen bringing so much pain, then fire was also used by Drogon to provide awe and wonder.
Props to the show for being that gritty but even more props to Kerry Ingram for a performance that was hauntingly good.
always please make 2 parts of season finale eps in each season.
First time I've ever seen Steven FORCE himself to watch a scene. You could see the real anger and hatred in his eyes as he watched.

I'm so excited when I see your reactions go up, too bad I normally have to wait to watch because I teach during the day
We gotta tread lightly here. Aegon in TV land can be a pretty fat spoiler.
Mad Aerys was Aegon's son. Blind Maester Aemon was Aegon's brother.
Egg is not the only Aegon. Should probably say no more.
The Shireen 's death is the saddest moment of the all show IMO, worse than the red wedding :-(
I'm disappointed they did not mentioned this on the show. They always say Stannis does this out of power.
I cried at that scene too Nikki. Shireen's screams were gut wrenching. Rewatching it it's still horrible. Poor Iphigenia
4:07 OMG, as soon as you said it, I pictured perfectly one come running past ablaze.
I'm glad you noticed the guy with his own needle. He was a water dancer like Syrio. The Shireen death is just horrific. I think they knew they couldn't' end an episode on that note. Hugs guys!

Name is Aerys. Second is not part of name
Lukas Mesaros
It's part of his title.
Title is not name. If u are Dr. It doesnt make it a part of your name (unless on paper.) Got me?
Lukas Mesaros It is part of his name, like Junior is part of Robert Downey Jr.'s name. You include it out of respect for the father, in this case Aerys I. Aerys II is Aerys Jr.
Just knowing that this scene was coming, I've been feeling so anxious for Nikki. Frankly, I'm surprised she didn't give up on the show on this episode alone.
Yeah, the Shireen scene was the hardest moment for me with GOT. Can you imagine what kind of great impact she would have had on the world as Heir to house Baratheon....we will never know.

That girl who played Shireen ... what a performance. We literally don't see anything bad at all, but the set up and the sound put it alongside the Red Wedding for me in terms of impact at the time, all despite the character having less than 20 minutes of screen time in total.
