One thing I learned, be careful of being influenced by people whose body type is completely different from your own, and whose color palette is completely different from your own.
Definitely! I have that with button-downs, which are always mentioned as a staple and I understand why, but no ‘traditional’ button-down has ever looked good on me.
On my don’t buy list: neutrals, flat/thin shoes, denim, button-front shirts, and synthetic fabrics. I live in bright colors, funky patterns, chunky shoes, and statement jewelry. One day, as an experiment, I wore all solid neutral colors to work, and every person I saw asked me if I was feeling okay. So yeah, I’d agree that the lists are very individual.
While watching this video, a package was delivered with a beautiful new pleated skirt I purchased on sale. Of course I stopped watching to try it on. It is okay but just okay. I literally said out loud, “If it’s not a Hell YES, it’s a no”. Back it goes. This is a big one for me. Thanks for reminding me not to settle for just okay.
One thing that always amazes me is that contemporary labels use a lot of synthetic fabrics. And I really love the styles but I am surprised at the $$$$ associated with synthetic fabrics.
Agree. I want 100% wool when buying a suit, etc. and spending $$$. However, I have noticed not all synthetics are created equal. Some do seem/wear better than others.
I agree! I'm often surprised at the cheap looking/feeling fabric some designer brands are using for their clothes. I would rather choose to buy a garment second hand from a hight street brand from good fabric than a new designer piece made out of polyester.
Just getting into the video, but -- jumpsuits. No can do. Why would I wear something I have to completely take off in the bathroom? At work, in a public bathroom? Eek.
Plus jumpsuits are hard to fit. They inherit all of the measurements needed to get a well fitting pant plus your top half had to be "proportionate" to your bottom half. I know some people really love them but I'm not really a fan.
This video is giving “post-breakup video to your future self to prevent you from getting back with your toxic ex” and I love it! Haha I am also working hard to give up my fantasy self pieces 😢
Hi Christina. DEFINITELY do a part 2! This topic made me really think! While my list does overlap with yours, chunky shoes, majority synthetic fabs, florals and geometric, I will never give up my stripes, lol. What I did realize were two things I’m drawn to “ imaginary self” but never wear due to my “ retired” lifestyle. I will no longer buy silk blouses, too hot where I live and too dressy for everyday life now ( will keep most of what I have) and “ dressy” dresses! Casual cotton dresses yes, but no place other than church to wear the others! AND I am so guilty of buying for vacation! NO MORE! Thank you for giving me something to really think about and undoubtedly saving me money!!!!
I remember about 10 years ago maybe when faux fur vest were the bomb, I loved them I bought one right away and returned it because I never wore it. then regret it and bought it again and returned again LOL learned that lesson then, just because I like something doesn't mean I like to wear it .
I no longer buy animal print clothing. I love how other people look in animal prints but I always feel as though I’m wearing someone else’s clothes. Animal print clothing never feels right on me. Now if I want to wear animal prints I limit it to an accessory, maybe a pair of shoes or a small clutch.
@@lilithowlI mean, you could ask that about literally anything. I think a lot of us find it fun to make excuses to buy new clothes that we think we will wear more than just once. Then we wear it once, and we keep attempting to wear it more often but can't find a reason. It's generally not our everyday style (even if we want it to be). So it hangs out with the vacation clothes in hopes that we will wear it on a different vacation but then we use the next vacation as an excuse to buy something we won't wear often again 😂😂😂 Vicious cycle. Clothes habits are hard to break!❤
That's so funny. I do own a pair of jeans, but exactly that: a pair. I don't like the restrictive feel of denim and wear skirts and dresses or wool/linen.
What a great tip to think about these things before wasting our money! Thank you so much. I need to remember that “I can admire something on someone else without having to own it for myself” 👌🏼
We agree on a few things: NO stripes, no white button-down shirts. A friend of mine was wearing a striped shirt that I thought was cute. When I asked her where she got it, she told me it had been mine! 😂 Now when I'm tempted to buy another one, I say to myself, "Just walk away! Walk away!". White sneakers are the same; they're just not me.
I have large shoulders on a small person. I never never buy anything button up or starchy feeling. It feels tight on my shoulders and big on the rest of me 🤪
OMG the beige trousers and my fantasy self. I feel like I have tried every shade. I love them on everyone but me. Thanks for helping me face the fact that this is a policy I need to adopt.
My don’t buy list: anything yellow or any shade of beige, I buy chocolate brown leather instead of tan, I prefer textures over bold prints, eg. broiderie anglaise instead of a printed blouse. I buy Maxi or mini length, nothing in between. No v-neck or crewneck, no bows frills etc. Nothing overly synthetic. Nothing in a dusty shade, more clear medium bright colours…. It’s such a good question, I never wrote these down before!
@@johannapersson2809I love white tops, but I also stain them all the time. If it’s not food stains it’s definitely going to be deodorant and spf stains, but I got really good at washing them out. Just a skill you have to learn if you just can’t keep your stuff clean like me 😂
My list includes jean jackets, oversized blazers, motorbike jackets (jackets in general because of my high waist and long arms are hard, but these three are impossible!). I don't do tees either, only sleeveless or long sleeves. Polyester and acrylic are completely out too 🥵 I love my super warm colours and don't do blue or black, but do love gold leather shoes and bags.
I'm so happy you mentioned Oxford shirts as a "no place" item. Yes, many love them and for good reason, but any button-down shirt looks terrible on me. Then I discovered that I have scoliosis (curvature of the lower spine). While it is not really noticeable, it does make a button-down shirt twist during the day. So, no more of those. Also, I'm not comfortable in jeans. It's so nice to watch fashion vloggers and say, "nope not for me."
Christina, you are so helpful! I have noticed that I do not buy prints anymore. I admire them on other people and have made the mistake of buying expensive prints thinking I would love them. Even worn them. But they ended up being a hell no and went into the donation pile. And I am finally ok with that!
Wow, I can agree on every comment here. My additions - Idon’t buy navy blue or black pieces in cotton, they wash out after 1st wash. Instead I discovered wool (yes, for summer!) and silk t-shirts and they are so much better.
I’ve redyed my black and navy natural fibres. I was nervous to start with, but I had (and still have) a pair of navy trousers that fit so well I really wanted to keep wearing them. Black and navy are the easiest to dye as the colour matching is straightforward, but I absolutely get your point. Faded equals scruffy.
I no longer buy clothes that won't work in my climate. I live in the PNW, it's cold and windy most of the year, yet I have a closet full of summer dresses because it's what I wish I could wear!
I’m in the UK. We have only a month per year, maximum, when it is warm enough to wear summer dresses yet my wardrobe is full of them, because I WISH it was warm enough to wear them 😢
❤this! Thank you. I have stopped wasting money on the cheaper version of a more expensive item I really wanted. I just bought my first pair of Levi’s 501 and now I understand why I never wore or really liked how I felt in some of the cheaper jeans with way too much stretch. I will never buy a low rise pant or jean again. They never suited me. They made me feel awful. Love them on those who can rock that look. Please do a part two. You are always inspirational for me and you are appreciated ! 😊
Yes! Low rise jeans are also a no for me. I love them on other people, but I just feel naked in them, especially if paired with a crop top. I feel really comfortable in my body, but I don’t like being so exposed 😅
Wow I just figured out that I AM kinda preppy. I've had to accept it. I had no idea. I am with you re: the patterns. I can't find any patterns except very muted in my wardrobe. However, the one pattern I have is - stripes!
I loved this!! Blazers for me. My style is so casual, that the few times I’d force myself to wear a blazer (for like a business dinner) I don’t feel comfortable or like myself.
I love going backwards from what you DON'T want. I wish the shopping sites would let us do that. I don't wear black. So when I shop online it would be so much easier if I could filter out black and the other colors I don't wear, and then see what's left. As a long-time dog and cat mom (and former horse mom) white pants have been a NO for decades, as have light colored bottoms of any kind. I also don't wear much for prints, and no big slouchy clothes - I am petite and they just don't fit my words or style vibe, although I love how they look on others. It makes shopping so much easier to know what your "no's" are.
Thank you for moving your part, as a barber I wanted you to do that for months. Lol!, you have no idea how much it changes everything, you’re beautiful but now more so! Thanks!
Love looking at what you don't want. I'm allergic to wool and cashmere, so I struggle to find natural fabrics that feel good in the winter. Thank goodness for linen in the summer.
Fussy clothes...anything that needs adjusting or tweaking (or a mirror!) when you are out. Done with that. And buying by size, especially since there is no consistency in sizing. I now buy by the fit I want and don't give a second thought to the number/size on the label. As you say, no one but you knows the number. Great video, def has me thinking.
Love this! I’ve been doing this for a while now and it has really helped. For me, my major “NOs” are: warm tones, synthetics, sleeveless or cap sleeves, and pointed toe shoes. It has made shopping so much easier.
My “do not buy” list: anything that isn’t flamboyant gamine. : D Frills, draping, thin/weightless fabrics, pastels, anything juvenile-leaning like hair accessories, slouchy handbags, maxi skirts/dresses, feminine dresses, dainty shoes, dainty jewelry, soft prints like polka dots or watercolour, oversized/wide leg jeans, anything boho-looking, etc. : D It certainly eliminates most clothes, but I find that perfectly tailored boyish blazer or cigarette pant or straight cut shirt it’s just *chef’s kiss.*
Love it! 🙌🏻 I am still on my journey finding my body type, but I think I might be a flamboyant gamine too. I’m not exclusively buying clothes in those lines, but I’m trying to have them in mind when shopping 😁 It’s really hard tho to differentiate between things not working for your body and things you just don’t like the style of, even if they may technically work for your body 🫠
Right? It’s a balance, I find. : ) I try and take the foundations of my typing (ie. the lines, the fabric weights, my colour season) as relatively concrete, and then everything else is how I interpret it. Or taking something I love but then understanding why it’s “wrong” and knowing the “rules” that help me counterbalance to bring harmony. There is nothing a body type “cannot” wear, but not everything looks good on everyone. I don’t know a single person in existence who looks their best in everything. Haha. : ) But it’s a case of knowing what inherently balances best, versus knowing what isn’t our best but finding ways to make them work. : )
@@danamatsukawa4762 Same! Even if prints are technically good for FGs I just don’t like the look of it. I prefer simple and minimal styles and anything ‚loud‘ feels like a costume
Yes. I’m sick of being told I need a little black dress. I never felt the need or desire to wear one in my life. Also skirts and dresses in general. Just not me. I’m tired of pretending. And I’m with you in fabrics. I need to wear something I feel my skin can breathe in and feels comfortable against my skin. Also adding any shoe that I can’t actually walk in for extended periods of time.
This video!!!!! Christina your content has been hitting for me lately! You’re really helping me rethink how I approach shopping and I’m better for it. I had the beginnings of an “I won’t buy this” list in my head but you inspired me to write it down and reflect on it a bit more. Thank you for bringing this up.
Totally agree - was going to write a similar comment but I’ll just tack onto yours 😂 for once in my life I’m making sensible shopping choices, and it’s EASY because of this content and rewiring my mentality
Great video! I recently had a revelation. Until now I didn't realize there was a difference between minimal style and minimalism. I knew I wasn't a minimalist, I have a 4 season wardrobe and a full closet. So I figured that my style couldn't be minimal either. However, I haven't known my style type and thought maybe I was classic but don't fit perfectly in that category. Then I saw a video describing the style types, and I think I'm more minimal than I knew. Since minimal has been one of your 3 words, could you do a video on this for clarification?
Agree! I’m a minimalist wanna be and working toward that but my three words: classic, quirky ( directly opposite classic but it helped my classic not be boring or too old looking and easy ( easy replaced minimal and casual for me; easy to wear, easy to clean, easy to mix and match and easy to look put together quickly. And easy to pack. Not to be confused with the other “easy “ if you know what I mean, lol.
@@dtgb8546 I hear ya! I'm definitely part classic, but one of my words was comfortable. I like your word easy. Now I'm beginning to think that's part of minimal style type. Plus when I'm shopping, so many times I look at a garment and think I wish it was plain or it didn't have that empelishment or buttons, ruffles, pockets, or embroidery or something.
Overalls, casual mini skirts, off the shoulder tops, skinny strap dresses, wrap dresses, pastels, jackets made with mostly synthetic materials, and uncomfortable shoes 😩 all the things i avoid buying My take on why people buy new clothes for a holiday = because you tend to take lots of photos on holiday so nice to be in something new. Or if the climate is very different to your own
Great video! I have eliminated nearly all the black in my wardrobe. I can’t wear black or gray - or blues/greens that have gray in them, or pinks with cool undertones or dark navy near my face. I am very fair with yellow undertones. I am a light spring. It’s helped me so much with shopping and clothes to have my colors done
Yes, I would love a part 2! The one item I'm constantly seeing (on YT, not IRL) is the button-up vest. Although some are very tempting, as a woman in her 60's, I have to remind myself that, despite my upper-body workouts, I no longer have the arms I want to show off in anything sleeveless. Also, I don't care for the look of them layered over something else, like a tee shirt. So, I've come to terms with the fact that I'll never buy one, even though I love how they look on younger women!
I am a retired teacher and 67 years young. I don't want to look frumpy therefore I have refreshed my wardrobe style with classic and tailored clothing along with some casual pieces that I wear when I am with my grandsons. I no longer buy synthetic clothing except if it is minimally included in the fabric content and I absolutely love the piece. Living in the warm/hot climate of Scottsdale, Arizona, I tend to buy light colors, so I no longer buy black tops and bottoms. I no longer buy midrise pants. As a petite gal, I prefer the high-rise fit. I gave up wearing heels when I turned 50. This video has been so helpful. I have items in my closet that I probably should declutter because I don't often wear them. I would love to see part 2.
100% the natural fibre thing! Super sweaty gal here too! The struggle is real! I found especially switching to all cotton undies was a complete and utter GAME CHANGER!!! Also, the frilly thing too, I like to try to try very girly things in a kind of edgy way, but I just cannot, it feels just so foreign on me
Fun similarities! 😃 I am a Deep Winter (light skin, dark brown hair & eyes)... So, no pastels, warm colors, and beige pants! And I'm more of a Soft Dramatic / Classic... So, no frills, florals, romantic, boho, patterns or schoolgirl looks. No heels! No polyester! YaY ❤ Feels so good to know what works and doesn't.
So I am going to start my "No go" list right now. I will keep the document open on my computer and add to it in the next few days as I am "out and about". Thank you so much for this. I hate tunics and leggings. Sometimes I get tricked into buying them but I always feel that I have "my sister's" clothes on. Going up to my closet right now and pitch those tunics and leggings. LOL
@@Onwardltk it's truly a bit of a hard look to pull off sometimes. Like you say, some can do it, but there are many who wear that look and they shouldn't.
Yes...Would love a part two!...Totally agree. I will buy something because "surely I need to break out of my neutral cycle" but truth is, I love my neutrals and when I try to buy for "fantasy self" or purchase an item that's trending, it ends up never getting the love it deserves and I wind up donating it....I also get suckered into great deals. Just because something is real leather or something is on sale or something might be worth a lot per resale comps, does not mean I need to spend money on it. Cycles and habits are hard to break so thank you for posting videos that helps us all to realize A - we're not the only ones and B - you can start a new and healthier chapter....
I'm 60, and in the early 80s as a young adult, the whole "Season Colour" was a big thing (I'm a winter "but"...). It took me a few years of figuring it out, it confused me because I do NOT have skin that is pink NOR yellow undertone; I can wear both "winter" and "fall" (if I wear strategic makeup), but just recently (!) I think i might be an Olive tone!!! Very pale Olive tone, but it makes sense since I'm of German decent, and most of my friends from Germany, Greece, Italy, we all seem to have that different "cast" to our skin. Your description of yourself rang true with me - any beige or camel looks gawd-awful on me, i can't wear any nude or light lipsticks; pinks are the best for makeup on me, any "warm" colours - bleh. As my face is evolving 😆 I am redefining my style for this next chapter, and am leaning heavily on black and white combos (my hair is coming in white), and intense colours for summer like red, strong turquoise, strong corals. My makeup is evolving into a more simple but more defined, and my fashion is more structured. Makes me feel powerful. I love playing with all this, and am loving your vids as well as Alyssa's and many other ladies on YT, they are KILLIN' it! 😁Much thanks.
for me, my primary color in color analysis is bright. so i look great in bright, bolder colors. I look terrible in colors that are too dark or too pastel. similarly, i love frills and volume and asymmetry and contrast. don't love sharp lines on myself. i love that we can learn these things about ourselves as we get older :)
I discovered that the Oxford shirt, beige trousers, and chunky loafers are my absolute number one style uniform and most true to me 😀. What I do not do at all is anything black, white, the classic T-shirt that people insist on being essential, blazers, or trousers that cross from the "relaxed" into the wide-leg or oversized territory. Thanks for the helpful food-for-thought video, would love to see a part 2!
Loved the Disney reference at the end - Aladdin was definitely in my top 3 Disney movies as a kid 🧞♂️ The timing on this was great, as I've been curating my own 'do not buy' list. I have 8 or 9 things on there - no 3/4 sleeve tops, patterned pants are a no-go (yet I love patterned skirts and dresses), and flowy tops (think peasant blouses, anything with that ethereal or boho vibe).
I am very limited in what I'll realistically wear. I'm with you on the (mostly) natural fabrics. I only wear black socks. I only wear full length pants (none of which are leggings) so no shorts, capris, skirts, or dresses... I just feel like I look silly in them. I don't wear white after Labour Day or any day. I don't wear accessories like hats, scarves, belts, and jewellery. I wouldn't even have a purse if my daughter hadn't bought me one as a gift! She chose well though because she knows I'm a minimalist and just got me a wallet on a string.
The designer Isaac Mizrahi once said, I'm paraphrasing, go for the best quality you can afford for your hairstyle and your shoes. Then, what's in between will look great no matter what the price point.
Interested video that made me think of my “No buy items” 😊 I made a mistake of buying cheap acrylic sweaters in the past and I quickly learned that it turned into rug after 1-3 washes. No to acrylic in any kind of clothing for me, huge NO. No to trendy pieces ( like ballon skirts, chunky shoes, cropped jackets etc), no to crazy patterns ( except checkered items, stripes and some animal prints, very limited little flowers for summer), no to faux fur( it looks like a dead cat to me), no to printed t-shirts. Huge “yes” to beige pants and anything beige( it suits me a lot and my complexion), yes to silk skirts and slip dresses, yes to button-ups, yes to timeless cashmere sweaters 😊
At the end of 2023 I made a list of things I didn't want to buy in general in 2024 because I already had too many of them. The only wardrobe item on that list was boots. And it's made me realize that while I love the look of boots, I generally don't wear them! Living in the north east US, I do need to have a couple of pair, but for me otherwise, it's kind of a waste of money. I also limit myself on the number of black items I have since I have pets and I hate picking hair off them and it really isn't great on me either. I also don't own a lot of dresses and skirts (2 of each) because I only need them for certain situations. I agree with you 100% on synthetics. And I hear you on the Oxford button downs. I finally donated all of what I had except for my denim style one because it kind of works for a jacket in a pinch too. I've never understood buying new clothes for vacation, I just want to be me and comfortable. Great video! (and sorry for the novel LOL)
Love this, timely reminder that other people's wardrobe staples aren't necessarily mine! I dont wear white button-downs, or tees, black blazers, or dress pants. I prefer a mandarin or grandad shirt collar rather than a button-down style. I prefer lace-ups to loafers. Knowing this will hopefully help me stop making mistakes!
I agree across the board, other than colours. I'm cool soft, so no more cool or warm deeps on my list. This list makes shopping so much easier. You can block out the noise and go straight for what you NEED (eg not WANT).
This comment section is great and proves your point.. we all have different tastes and preferences 😊. I am with you on the natural fibers and high heels. I also don’t like too many ruffles or embellishments. Not much patten either with the exception as I love a Breton stripe. My style can lean a little preppy like I love vintage Ralph Lauren. I think I need to put skirts on my no buy as I can’t seem to find one that feels Ike me. Great video. Yes to part 2.
I loved this. I am immediately going to build a do not buy list. On it, I will definitely add crop tops cuz, just no. Also graphic tshirts because I love them, but I have over 25. No more. And definitely no more stilettos. I'm good with a wedge or kitten heel, but that's it. Thank you for your content. The way I more authentically dress and am more intentional in my buying is a huge win, financially and stylistically.
Loved this - so useful! I wonder if the problem with chunky shoes is the colour- ie, black? I love chunky shoes ( and square toes in general), provided they're in a lighter colour. Cannot wear black shoes, unless the pants or skirt is also black. Just feels too heavy..
Super interesting for me to watch, especially since as you touched on in the beginning, I have a very different personal style than you! So it was a fun exercise for me to think about what my list would be. Honestly, blazers are probably the first thing I can think of 😂 I’m petite and slim with curves, so anything oversized or boxy just drowns me and I don’t feel confident in it at all. I have been paying more attention to fabric quality and composition as well too though - I got burned buying what should have been a beautiful and flattering dress online, but since it was basically 100% polyester it was horrendous. It was a real aha moment for me - like wow, this dress could have been great if it were mostly cotton or linen….
Ok I thought of some more things after reading through the comments! I don’t buy crew neck tops (unflattering on me), chunky shoes same as you, I just don’t like them, or any heels - I only wear flat shoes. I’m short and I like to be short lol - I don’t feel like myself in heels, so I wear them maybe once a year for a special occasion, but never as part of my regular wardrobe. I also don’t buy destroyed denim (not my style).
I have gravitated toward white pants from the tan and khaki I used to wear. They look better to me year round, fresh, sharp, and easy to pair with tops.
Bonjour, I don't buy expensive clothes aymore. I bought a pair of great Eileen Fisher''s pants and the tag is still on it. No jumpsuit or the short version either. I love to see video with Alyssa I like her video too. Have a great day, Magalie
I love colors and I stopped trying to buy only beige and black . I still really love white though. Blazers are just not for me, I got rid of all of them, they are super uncomfortable so cashmere cardigans it is for me! I don’t buy heels anymore, but I still keep some since sometimes they are needed. I only buy natural fabrics and nothing tight, love me a classy look.
When I initially got out of my shopaholic phase and started listing some of my stuff on Depop and asking friends/family if they wanted some of my clothes I really realised that even the simplest pieces of clothing are very personal choices. A great example would be a black ribbed top, I like high collars, short sleeves, long enough to tuck, thick fabric. My mum like sleeveless, boat neck or round and thin fabric.
Hello from Ukraine! Buying stop-list is a thing. I discovered so many cases when I was decluttering, just little things like the wrong collar shape, color tone, materials, etc. Item can be absolutely nice, but THIS ONE thing ruining all and it just hanging in wardrobe forever never worn. 😬 So now i know at least - no light colors, no warm tones, no tight collars, no for synthetic, no jeans (hard fabrics on the skin ugh), no for knee-lenght skirts! It's what I can remember now🙃
Thanks for the valuable tips. On my do not buy list are: low rise pants, floral shirts, very high heels ( now I prefer comfort instead of getting tired wearing them). When I was declutterig my wardrobe last time I figured out also why I did not wear some pieces from my wardrobe (the color of this pieces did not suit my skin). I need a follow up :)
I don’t buy skirts anymore. Which is strange because I love dresses, especially in the summer. But skirts often ride up if they’re short, get turned around if they’re too big, and require more styling than dresses. The other bigs nos for me are heels, tight jeans, and belts. I hate wearing belts. Basically, anything uncomfortable is out.
I feel this re: skirts. I own a few but find myself turning to dresses far more often! For me dresses tend to flatter my figure better also with wide hips and a bit of a tummy I can look nicely hourglass in most dresses but a skirt and top is trickier without looking choppy and unflattering.
I loved this video! I think knowing what you DON'T want is a good way to guide you to your "hell yes" purchases/style. It's always good to take stock of your values and the mistakes you've done in the past to see what you shouldn't add to your wardrobe. For me, I've realized (a littler later than I would have liked) that I loved-to-buy-but-hated-to-wear frilly/feminine blouses in delicate materials and with bows that you could be tied at the neck, or bell-shaped sleeves. I discovered that I much prefer a stiff button-up that I can dress up or down and that doesn't make me look overly feminine (because that's a look I'm staying clear of). Another thing that I think doesn't belong in my wadrobe anymore is new fast fashion. I'm ok with a second hand Zara coat, but I won't be getting any new ones from the store. And another thing that has no place for me is any type of uncomfortable shoe. But unfortunately sometimes even the most comgy-looking shoes can give you blisters, so it's a hit and miss, especially if you buy online, but even when you try on the shoe in store sometimes you can't tell (which honestly is kinda giving me an existential crisis).
Love this topic! Please do another. Your insight is so helpful as I go through my own process. I gave up blazers and jean jackets. I love the style but they are too restrictive for me.
I’m a flower print person, and a warm tone person but I have a lot of overlap with you besides that. 1) Went through a Breton stripe phase too before I realized they just look wrong on me. So many people swear they look great on everyone but it’s not true. 2) bows and ruffles 3) big shoulder pad jackets because I have broad shoulders already and don’t need to look like a footballer. 3) jeans or jean skirts that don’t feel soft enough on my waist. Even if they look amazing I won’t wear them if they aren’t comfortable. This has been a hard one to reconcile. 4) Really bright colors. I look & feel better in muted deep tones, though I love bright colors on others and in general. 5) uncomfortable anything- including undergarments! So no more underwire bras. 6) Beige. Stone is ok, but beige… I have a beige linen bomber jacket from Zadig and Voltaire. I bought it in Paris when I was sad. I still love the construction but must let it go. 7) like my rule with drinking; no shopping when I’m sad. It doesn’t work! And worse than a hangover are the garments that remind me of the sadness. That isn’t an item but it’s probably my most important rule. I guess I can thank my beige jacket for finally teaching me that lesson.
You could try dying the beige bomber. If it’s going out anyway it won’t matter if you mess it up shrug. Since the stitching is polyester I would do a dye that can handle synthetic like Rit’s dyemore line. Also since linen can shrink I wouldn’t do it at the recommended almost boiling temperatures. It would probably just make it a bit lighter. I just dyed a hill house home dress that had yellow under the arms and I like it even better now.
Oh I have a problem with Breton stripes LOL I LOVE them. I have to stop myself regularly from buying it. Also chunky loafers are my big love. They complement my vibe so well and receive compliments regularly on how I wear them. I am in agreement with everything else though. Natural fibers, cool colors and everything very minimal. I had a big gray with black moment during last Winter and felt super "me". Pastels are the devil LOL I have stopped shopping on vacation entirely. I find that the place I am at used to influence what I buy (beach town for example) and that is not something that works in real life once I am back.
I've stopped buying skirts. I love wearing dresses all summer and always assumed skirts were a logical and easy extension of that, but I NEVER reach for them. I finally donated my last skirt last Month. It's been in my closet for 2 years and I have probably worn it less than 10 times.
Ohh I can relate so much! I love an easy summer dress but in every other season and scenario, I do not wear skirts, ever. I think I have one skirt still kicking around in my closet that I may have worn one time, but I think it’s time for it to go…
I'm the complete opposite. I love skirts but I barely wear my dresses, I think because I feel like I have to wash them as often as I would a shirt whenever I sweat in them. It's crazy how different preferences can be 😂
Im the exact opposite! I’ve been buying up skirts because they are awesome! I’m not the same size top & bottom, skirts are the answer since dresses don’t fit me right. Also you can mix & match tops with other bottoms, or change up tops & shoes with the skirts to get a lot more outfits.
After watching your video I now understand why my Breton striped shirts ends up in my wardrobe together with my loafers. Too preppy! Thanks for the eye opener. I also have a no buy for polyester and angora sweaters.
I'v been watching you for a long time, I feel like my style has evolved along with yours. I love a preppy look, yes to prints, colours, cardigans. Agree with the oxford shirts and high heels. My additional no buys: more skirts, more blazers and leather clothes (jackets, pants etc). Do a part 2!
First off - omg I adore you. I have to go watch the videos of how to understand my tone. I totally can't even figure out what foundation matches me, nevermind what colors look best on me.😂 I can't tell the difference between warm and cool colors in general or notice a difference in me when I wear them. 😅 The 3 style words really helped me a lot. I'm still struggling with getting rid of clothes, though lol. Like I bought 2 blazers a couple years ago to be my fantasy self, and I still hate but can't get rid of them 🙄. I also sweat a lot, and they're synthetic... Ick.😅
Yes, please make a part 2, that’s fun! Here are my “will not buy again” items - [ ]Black and dark colored clothes - [ ] Frilly, playful clothes - [ ] Synthetics - [ ] Autumn colors (maroon, honey yellow, rust) - [ ] Hip long tops/sweaters - [ ] Straight mini skirts that end just above the knee (better: A-Line or straight with hem above the ancles) - [ ] Silk shirts
Totally agree with puffy sleeves etc…I sometimes get the feeling that fashion houses try to see what ridiculous offerings they can put up each season and secretly laughing that they can get us women to dress like clowns 🤡
Yes, this is such a good idea. I fully agree on heels and stripes. For some reason stripes never end up being a love for me. Also do not buy formal trousers, I love the look but I always feel too corporate for my personality and lifestyle - same with blazers (sorry Christina 🙈) I’ve tried a few blazers, different fabrics, different fits, and I am not a blazer girly. That is ok 😊 they look fire on other people.
short skirts for summer, flipflops, black tops, anything warm colored, synthetic fibers, ball gowns, high heels, boleros, gold jewelry, scoop necks, boat necks, stripes in very contrasting colors, …
Haha, love the ball gowns 😂 but what if you get invited to a fancy ball this evening and you HAVE to war a fancy dress 🤨 you never know and you definitely don’t wanna show up in anything less than the most amazing sparkling princess dress 😂 Just kidding, I sometimes see a fancy dress and think, oh maybe I need it one day 🤦🏼♀️😂
I like synthetic pants. I have cats and dogs so I feel like the fur rakes off easier, and I really hate rebuying pants and black synthetic just stay black forever. For tops I almost always hate them. Merino is my favorite but I like cotton too. I wish I could try AG1 but I’m allergic to mushrooms. I hope one day they come out with a mushroom free one.
Yes, I have given up on black cotton pants because they attract lint and hair and as somebody who relies on black pants as a wardrobe staple, I need a pair with some synthetic fibre for beter wear and appearance
I agree with the khaki pants. Something I used to wear and be okay with but now I feel weird. Recently donated both khaki pants and shorts. No overalls. Tried them and they don't work on me anymore. Did try the more skin trick on a masculine, tailored blouse. Unbuttoned it more (with a cami) and it looked and felt so much better.
I like your use of different shapes and sizes models. Hearing you say I can like a style on someone else but recognize it is not work for me. Such a simple idea but I fall into the trap if that looks so good, if I wear it I will look pulled together.
Love your comments about color. I had my colors done in the '80s when it was "spring, summer, autumn, winter" and from the first time I started watching your videos, I could have told you that silver was your jam, but not gold. I've identified as an autumn for a long time. It's only been recently, since I started going gray, that I've been able to make the navy and black and white work for me. Do our colors change as we age? Will you be able one day to wear a pink tee, if you allow your hair to go gray (if you actually do)?
My I no longer buy list is skirts and dresses. I have one skirt and one dress and I sold all the rest. I wear jeans every day; chinos if it ever warms up. I kept looking at pretty flowered dresses and bought a couple of patterned tops instead of dresses. It’s still too cold here in Yorkshire, UK so I’ll wear them if it does warm up
I also don't buy items which I like if they're made of polyester /acrylic. I know now that I won't wear them if they make me feel itchy / hot / uncomfortable...
I rarely agree with everything in a video so I was surprised that found I liked everything you said. I keep reviewing my wardrobe and remove many items I’ve bought thinking they should work - and in the end I let them go. You explain the why’s wonderfully.
One thing I learned, be careful of being influenced by people whose body type is completely different from your own, and whose color palette is completely different from your own.
Definitely! I have that with button-downs, which are always mentioned as a staple and I understand why, but no ‘traditional’ button-down has ever looked good on me.
Yes!
I love this comment! I am a fellow funky fashion lover and I will never wear a plain white tee
@@erikafulop1173and everyone loves you for it! ❤
Absolutely yes to natural fibers and quality footwear. Comfort is paramount! Mostly solid colors, simple, streamlined, comfortable, elegant ease.
One thing that always amazes me is that contemporary labels use a lot of synthetic fabrics. And I really love the styles but I am surprised at the $$$$ associated with synthetic fabrics.
Yes. My thought is if you’re paying top dollar you should be getting luxury which to me means not just the design but quality material.
Agree. I want 100% wool when buying a suit, etc. and spending $$$. However, I have noticed not all synthetics are created equal. Some do seem/wear better than others.
I love polyester. No wrinkles and the fabric has a nice drape on my body. Wool makes me itch, so I cannot wear it.
I agree! I'm often surprised at the cheap looking/feeling fabric some designer brands are using for their clothes. I would rather choose to buy a garment second hand from a hight street brand from good fabric than a new designer piece made out of polyester.
i work at nordstrom and i still never fail to be amazed by how much the contemporary brands are charging for majority polyester blends😭
I no longer buy cheap shoes. They end up hurting my feet or making my feet smell. I'd rather save up and buy a better quality, well made shoe instead.
Totally agree!
Same! Learned this the hard way when I blistered my poor feet and bruised my toenails
I love leather shoes and bags, pleather does not last. Not that I don’t have any just for fun but I wouldn’t invest much in them.
Ditto. I don't want to undress to go to the toilet. Also, I have a long torso and I think it would be difficult to find one to fit me properly.
Amen yes also the upper- to lower-body ratio is almost never quite right
Makes me think of all the brides’maiding’ I’ve done, holding frothy tulle in the air. So many dresses not conducive to bathroom visits!
All the haters!!! 😭 I love jumpsuits, I have a whole bunch. Such an easy outfit to throw on, and I don't spend all day in the loo 😉
Yes! A fellow strip lover. I can't get enough.
What a great comment, feeling like I'm wearing someone else's clothes! That's so true ❤
Same!!! Especially the skirts but it looks strange on me. I love animal print scarves
Oh my gosh,i have a whole closet section for my fantasy vacation clothing🫣
I can sooo relate to that! This is one of my do not buys: clothes for vacations I haven't even booked 😂
Why?
@@lilithowlI mean, you could ask that about literally anything. I think a lot of us find it fun to make excuses to buy new clothes that we think we will wear more than just once. Then we wear it once, and we keep attempting to wear it more often but can't find a reason. It's generally not our everyday style (even if we want it to be). So it hangs out with the vacation clothes in hopes that we will wear it on a different vacation but then we use the next vacation as an excuse to buy something we won't wear often again 😂😂😂 Vicious cycle. Clothes habits are hard to break!❤
Enjoy it!
I travel multiple times a year, so the majority of my wardrobe is vacation clothing. 😆
One wardrobe item you rarely complain about is your jeans. As someone who loves denim, and wears Levi's jeans every day, I agree - they are timeless.
You’ve taught me to look at fabrics 👏🏻 I don’t buy synthetic/plastic anymore
I no longer buy clothing made of fabrics that I don’t love the feel of. Even natural fibres have to feel good on my skin or it’s a ‘no’!
Example would be linen it's very breathable and comfortable in the heat. Sometimes it's scratchy against my skin. Not sure why.
I don't own any white clothes. No white t-shirts, no white socks, no white undies, no white sneakers etc😅
hell no
I don’t have anything black though 😅 - ok leggings but that’s all. No shoes, no blazer.. nothing 🙊
I hate white clothes (on myself). Its so easy to stain 😱
@@johannapersson2809I love white tops, but I also stain them all the time. If it’s not food stains it’s definitely going to be deodorant and spf stains, but I got really good at washing them out. Just a skill you have to learn if you just can’t keep your stuff clean like me 😂
I am considering not buying more white items going forward as well.
Part 2 please, thanks a good reminder to not repeat the same mistakes again and again 😂😀
I no longer buy clothes that won't work in my climate. I live in the PNW, it's cold and windy most of the year, yet I have a closet full of summer dresses because it's what I wish I could wear!
I live in southern Nevada and live in floaty cotton dresses in the summer. I used to live in Portland, so I feel your pain.
Totally agree! Every time it ends with a bunch of cheeper versions, spending a lot of money on this sh*t and anyway buying an "original"🥲
Wow I just figured out that I AM kinda preppy. I've had to accept it. I had no idea. I am with you re: the patterns. I can't find any patterns except very muted in my wardrobe. However, the one pattern I have is - stripes!
Great video. Part 2 please! My NO buy list: heels, round toe, gold jewelry, gold tone hardware, synthetics, heavy knits/blazers, 100% cotton jeans (I need 1-2% elastane!), leather/denim jacket, graphic tshirts, slippery fabrics, occasion wear, bright colours/bold prints, shapewear, halters, tiers/ruffles, anything leopard....
I loved this!! Blazers for me. My style is so casual, that the few times I’d force myself to wear a blazer (for like a business dinner) I don’t feel comfortable or like myself.
Same!! So many stylish people wear blazers and look amazing. But I always feel so uncomfortable and like I’m playing dress up.
Thanks!
Totally agree, I only buy clothes for holiday if I really need them ie swimsuit otherwise I take what I wear normally xx
I’ve also bought, decluttered and rebought khaki/tan/beige pants multiple times. They look so good on other people 🫣
Love looking at what you don't want.
Cap sleeves! Deffo no
My “do not buy” list: anything that isn’t flamboyant gamine.
I’m not exclusively buying clothes in those lines, but I’m trying to have them in mind when shopping 😁
It’s really hard tho to differentiate between things not working for your body and things you just don’t like the style of, even if they may technically work for your body 🫠
Love that!! Same for me too 😊
Great video!
Overalls, casual mini skirts, off the shoulder tops, skinny strap dresses, wrap dresses, pastels, jackets made with mostly synthetic materials, and uncomfortable shoes 😩 all the things i avoid buying
My take on why people buy new clothes for a holiday = because you tend to take lots of photos on holiday so nice to be in something new.
I wear them over large sleeved blouses they give me an hourglass shpe...love them.
LOL
Yes! I finally admitted that I am not a tunic and leggings kind of gal. I love it on some but it is not for me no matter how I tried.
I won’t buy anything with more than 15% synthetics anymore. I still have some acrylic sweaters in my closet…and I rarely reach for them.
Thanks for this video! You didn't just share your list, you taught us how to think about our own!
Loved the Disney reference at the end - Aladdin was definitely in my top 3 Disney movies as a kid 🧞♂️
The timing on this was great, as I've been curating my own 'do not buy' list.
I avoid synthetics and cheap shoes!
I agree about the high heels! Am over them. Funny the florals and stripes and puff sleeves are everything I love 😂
Yes to most of these but especially vacation clothes. I used to do that a lot, even for vacations that fell through 🤦♀
Just discovered your channel ! Thanks for the great content!
I also don’t buy destroyed denim (not my style).
jeans are on my no buy list in this stage of life, ive decluttered all but 1 pair
I can't do polka dots, but I love a basic stripe!! So true, you know what feels "right" on you.
Yes to part 2. It’s helpful to articulate what you don’t want to buy.
2) bows and ruffles
3) big shoulder pad jackets because I have broad shoulders already and don’t need to look like a footballer.
The 3 style words really helped me a lot.
Here are my “will not buy again” items
- [ ]Black and dark colored clothes
- [ ] Frilly, playful clothes
- [ ] Synthetics
- [ ] Autumn colors (maroon, honey yellow, rust)
- [ ] Hip long tops/sweaters
- [ ] Straight mini skirts that end just above the knee (better: A-Line or straight with hem above the ancles)
- [ ] Silk shirts
Totally agree with puffy sleeves etc…I sometimes get the feeling that fashion houses try to see what ridiculous offerings they can put up each season and secretly laughing that they can get us women to dress like clowns 🤡
Clownish is exactly what I feel like in that stuff. Especially polka dots.
No more white pants. And yes, I would love a part 2.
A great approach I’d not considered but will now, thank you.
short skirts for summer, flipflops, black tops, anything warm colored, synthetic fibers, ball gowns, high heels, boleros, gold jewelry, scoop necks, boat necks, stripes in very contrasting colors, …
Haha, love the ball gowns 😂 but what if you get invited to a fancy ball this evening and you HAVE to war a fancy dress 🤨 you never know and you definitely don’t wanna show up in anything less than the most amazing sparkling princess dress 😂
Just kidding, I sometimes see a fancy dress and think, oh maybe I need it one day 🤦🏼♀️😂
I like synthetic pants.
I so appreciate that the images you use as examples show women of all shapes and sizes. ❤
I’m a ‘winter’ but with my grey hair I’ve softened into ‘summer’ tones
