      100% agree, and that's such a nice way of putting it.
      A sweater in a colour that looks amazing on you is going to do a much better job when used in this "accessory" way, and you'll also be able to wear it as a regular item of clothing, so it's much more versatile.
      It's time to let it go, and take the lesson that if you are going to dabble in colour, stick to the ones that your friend who's an expert in colour told you look great on you, if you don't trust your own eye yet.

    • @deborahcurtis1385
      @deborahcurtis1385 4 місяці тому +6

      Agree. But as Christina's skin is almost neutral she can get away with it. The problem is the shape of the cardigan is too boxy it's cutting her off at the wrong place, at the upper hip. It needs to be longer and a v neck not round neck.
      Plus the black is awful it's a very harsh combination with red, it's very ageing as a combination. White and red is too much like Christmas colours. A more sympathetic combination is greige or taupe with red it makes the red pop. Or hot pink with red. It sounds awful but it can look very effective. But not with that yellow-red, it needs to be in the blues as you say.
      I would not wear that red with navy or you end up looking like a bank teller or flight steward. It's a tricky business. I love navy on a winter colouring but make it something with a lot or style in the shaping. I would wear more structured clothing to get a nipped in waist and a slimming effect.
      The cardigan, just no. We've all been there!

    I like how you go through your thought process in detail, that's helpful. I think the worst part of the milkmaid dress is its color. Possibly in a deep teal or chocolate brown it might have more "edge." The white just looks like a nightgown, no matter what the silhouette.

    • @seltzermint5
      @seltzermint5 4 місяці тому +17

      I agree. The length and style together with the white are not working. Especially with the jacket it made me think of a nun - I know a nun wouldn’t probably wear that motorcycle type jacket but it’s the combination of black and long white dress.

    • @deborahcurtis1385

      It washes Christina's skin out. She's a sporty type and is gravitating towards that. the dress is too romantic and she's instinctively uncomfortable with that.
      I'd wear shirt dresses open necked with no pattern or just soft vertical stripes.
      Shoes need to be more middle of the road, Christina's a classic type or sporty; only classic or preppy styles suit her.
      Oversized too slouchy is too extreme and overwhelming.

    Christina, I have the same struggles with gold jewelry. And what I’ve started doing to offset the color imbalance is pairing it with silver and/or pearls. For me, mixing other necklaces with the pearls makes them less fussy and prim, and the white, for me at least, counterbalances the yellow tones that can be problematic with my undertone. Mixing metals is helpful! I also find that brushed gold looks a lot better on me and when you pair it with very shiny gold there’s a texture mix that also works. I’ve discovered that playing with texture in jewelry can lift an outfit as much as the textures of fabric.

    • @mph_83
      @mph_83 4 місяці тому +3

      Yes, same for me with yellow gold jewelry. It was/is so on trend (since most of us have been wearing a lot of silver for so many years, I think). But I also have a pinkish/neutral skin tone and cool colors look way better on me. Still, I have a couple of yellow jewelry and heirloom pieces I love, so I pair my golden pendants with silver necklaces or I mix gold and silver bracelets. But with earrings and short necklaces I tend more to silver/white gold pieces.

    • @JaneCrossan
      @JaneCrossan 4 місяці тому +3

      I've always preferred silver to gold and didn't realise it was because of my skin tone. (very pale). I love the idea of mixing the metals. When I was a younger woman, people tended to wear either gold or silver, never both together. I am going to come out of my comfort zone and experiment. It will give me a chance to wear my gold pieces instead of leaving them lying in a box. It will be good to wear pearls more regularly as I love them but as you say they can look a bit fussy on their own ❤

    I’m glad you kept the red cardigan for the reasons you ended up mentioning. As I was watching (before I got to the part where you said you are keeping it) I was saying to myself, “wear it around your waist or shoulders” - that’s what I did with a fine red cashmere sweater that got a big moth hole!

    • @calleachbeare5173
      @calleachbeare5173 4 місяці тому +2

      Depending on where the moth hole was, my mom would embroider something over it. Cashmere is just soooo expensive (& comfortable) she couldn’t bear to throw it away. Great video! I love your mind set. One thing I've learned from my mistakes is that oversized tops don't flatter me. They make me look bigger than I really am. On my weight loss journey, I told myself that if I bought the larger sized pieces that they would just look oversized once I slimmed down but it didn't work out that way. I looked swamped. I want to keep them longer. But I am trying to come to terms with the fact that I’m older, I’ve had major surgery which has changed my upper body and that I’ve fluctuated in weight due to stress. I always keep thinking, maybe I should keep them but then I look at the items that are an immediate yes and compare to the ones I’m unsure of which makes it easier. I think you are right about the blue shirt being too cropped. As Ellie-Jean pointed out in one video, your silhouette is slim, long and straight, so longer lines tend to look better on you. A longer fitting button down will look more harmonious than a cropped one. I think the same goes for the shoes that fell too chunky. As you got a slimmer frame (like slim bones), even though you have a lovely muscular physique, slim shoes won’t disrupt your lines and look better on you. Maybe this helps to describe why you felt that way about those clothes 😊

    Love your videos, Christina! My style is quite different from yours, but this video really resonated with me. I think we all like to experiment with trends, but this illustrates how helpful it is to understand how coloring and body type affect how we look and feel in our clothing. I think most of us know what looks good on us, but don't really know why. In your case, you have a long torso and short legs, so it is not surprising that the looks that work with chunky loafers (slim, cropped pants, ankle socks) would not work with your natural proportions. Ditto with the shirt that shrunk and even the cardigan, as they are too short for your torso. Conversely, you look fabulous in long, wide leg trousers which elongate your legs and highlight your narrow waist, and you can really pull off the oversized blazer look. There's a reason you have gravitated toward your signature style, because it flatters your body type. That's why it's so helpful to watch videos like these and hear how you analyze and learn from your missteps. Decluttering only five purchases is a pretty good batting average, BTW!

    • @deborahcurtis1385

      The mistake was the chunky socks. You need a contrast so finer socks and show the ankles, Plus red socks is also a mistake. It draws the eye down to the feet not what you want if you're wanting to look taller. I would not break up the outfit but keep to a monochrome it's better on the eye, and use finer leather woven belts that are tied. Very adaptable.

    Great idea to get rid of pieces that don’t make you feel like your best self! And I agree with you about the button up, it’s a beautiful shirt but doesn’t drape the way the other two do because of its length.

  • @newmercies1

    The red cardigan would look fantastic over the white dress (which dress needs ironing by the way). Reason I mention ironing is that it makes a huge difference in the clothing appearance and how we feel about certain pieces we wear. The red cardigan will also look great with white/beige/black/ivory "U" shape tank top or dress. Un-button the top two buttons of the cardigan or keep the cardi open and wear some long necklace. The U shape of the tank top along with the long necklace and the unbuttoned cardi will remove the focus from your neck. Additionally wear a red lipstick and put some color to your cheeks. Wear it with a low heel sandal or pump. Try it - the cardigan is very beautiful and the color does fit you, it warms up your complexion exactly because you are pale like me. ;)

    Wow this video really hit home I have a lot of the same bad purchases. I learned my loafer lesson about ten years ago. I have a blue button down shirt that I got hemmed too short for how wide it is. It was a really nice Boden shirt and I couldn’t get rid of it so it has been repurposed to a beach cover up.

    The loafer segment completely cracked me up. I’m completely obsessed with loafers! I totally stole the outfit idea that Allison gave to you with the jeans, red socks, and the black loafers. I get compliments on it every single time I wear it! I got some o blood red thin men’s socks and it’s just a killer combo for me! It’s also nice with black trousers.

    I'm also not a cardigan girl - tried many times, but I didn't like them buttoned up (might as well wear a crew neck sweater and avoid the button-bunch) and they were too floppy when left open (no structure, did nothing for my figure). Now I am either wearing a blazer, coatigan, or collared shirt if I want the layered look or a crew neck sweater shirt or hoodie if I want the 'closed' look.

    I really wanted to love boots. Ankle boots, tall boots…they just don’t work for me. LOVE them on other people, but 1) I live in the southern United States and it just doesn’t get that cold here, and 2) my style is much more breezy and casual. I live in linen trousers half the year and jeans year round, and I prefer to pair them with sandals or sneakers. I also tried the yellow gold trend but I have a cool undertone as well so it’s not the most flattering on me and I feel the difference. Oh, and I tried dresses. Nope. Just not me. It was a great learning experience because now I feel like I truly know my style and I’m much more confident in my style decisions.

    I would wear something white inside that red cardigan - a white collared shirt, a white tank or tee, etc. This makes the proper contrast, as the bright red against most skins is too unbalanced - unless you have a rich chocolatey skin. The sharp white then balances the contrast. Or, try a white accessory - sunglasses, earrings, necklace etc.
    A pure white will work really well with a bright red.
    A very bright shade usually needs a balancing color, whether it's your skin/hair/clothes/accessories. Most skins are too pale or dull. So the job goes to clothes or accessories.

It did not hit elegant as one of my words. When I started to wear my linen and cotton dresses I did not feel like I could not wait to take it off. I have worn my linen blends and cotton’s pieces to death. Live and learn no stretchy fabrics for me. I don even like t shirt or tank tops unless they are in a silky fabric. Thanks for a great video!

    Hi Christina. I've got buyer's remorse for some yellow gold jewellery I bought. I've worn silver or white gold for years, but feel in summer yellow gold does look better with my tan. Silver\white gold looks dirty on me in summer, but great in winter. Anyway, every time I put the new jewellery on I don't feel like myself. I love the curb chain bracelet, but the necklace just doesn't suit me. I'm gutted as it wasn't cheap - I can't buy cheaper jewellery due to allergies. So now it will stay in my dressing table reminding me of my bad decision. What's even more annoying was that I sold a lot of stuff on Vinted and used my sales money for it. 🙄

    I think the problem with the white dress is that it isn’t minimal enough. I would call that dress “too fussy” in design, despite the plain fabric. You would make a girly white maxi dress work for your style if it actually fit your “minimal” criteria. Either with really clean seam lines, probably shaped with darts rather than gathering in the upper body, or with hardly any seams, like a slip dress. Those 3 lines of elastic and the resulting gathering is way too much busyness. The eye catches too much on the waist area.

    I think the orangey red sweater could work if you tied a beautiful vibrant multicolored scarf with it. As for the white dress, it is a lot of dress and I know what you mean about the neckline. I prefer a U or V to show some skin. I would hem it to a shorter length and change the neckline and then pair it with sandals and a white denim shorter jacket. I had my colors done years ago and the first thing she did was to drape my neckline first with a piece of gold metallic fabric and then with silver fabric. That confirmed that silver jewelry looks best on me.
