In an extraordinary stroke of luck, I happened to find and buy a 15ml tube of the old quin gold from Daniel Smith, RIGHT before they went off the market. I didn't even know I was buying something rare because I had never used or bought DS before. So I am very pleased to have it! I have compared it side by side to the new formula and feel that they got it VERY close colour wise. So if someone out there is worried they've missed out, I'd say not to stress too much. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless you've worked with the old formula extensively. There isn't THAT big of a difference visually to the new formula, and Sennelier's one is also absolutely lovely, as is Schmincke's. There are alternatives that are well worth it. I'm just saying this because I see a lot of people practically in sackcloth and ashes about losing the pigment and I feel like they're causing themselves disproportionate levels of sadness. Thank you so much for this video. :)

I have the W&N Old Quin gold, it is also the PO49. I found it my local art store, not too long ago. So when you visit small art stores, always check is there old quin golds available :) Especially those old label W&N pans and tubes.

That old Sennelier color makes me want to cry 😭 PO49 is such a gem and I'm so glad to have found it before the turn over - I just wish I had known about the original sap green before it was gone, too!
Anyhoo, I like DS and W&Ns hue versions best in my own practice, but I'm looking forward to seeing the color mixes. It's weird that any of these would be opaque given PY150 and PO48 are transparent... As a note, Da Vinci's is a pretty color but it's much more orange than the others.

In Liquid Color would you say that the original ds Quin gold is generally more natural in color than the really vibrant new colors? I think it appears that way in this video at least especially if you look at the bottom corner of the old ds version vs the darker places of the new. I wonder if you were to add an EVER so slight amount of green or even a warm blue would it more accurately mimic the old version given how the green in the old sennelier has neutralized the mass tone.

@@sharkranger6 yes, the original is more muted just slightly and doesn't yellow in tints like the new ones do (due to the PY150)

@@InLiquidColor and for me the old QG was about the AMAZING mixes you get out of it compared with these replacements which pale in comparison.

Same!! I don't understand why they would so drastically change such a beautiful color and keep the same name.

I thought it was PO49. Not PY??
I wish i could find Backstock somewhere. Not many shades really match it.

This is very helpful! I do have a tube of the original daniel smith but as I’m still learning the craft, I’ve been wondering about how it really shines, now i see!

Man, it's no wonder Sennelier doesn't make that old version any more-it's not even close to the target color! Glad I stockpiled the OG DS one when I heard it was getting the axe. Although a viewer recently sent me a sample of some genuine quin gold paint that the mulled themselves with the original pigment. I need to test it out and see how it stacks up!

I love the uniqueness of the original quin gold, but none of my most commonly used sets has it (being sennelier and schmincke), so I don't miss it really. I love PO49 a lot from a paint history standpoint though :)

There is a noticeable difference between Jackson's and Sennelier in this case - you can see PY150 peeking through Sennelier's version, while Jackson's is much more earthy in hue (more ochre-like) and my guess it that's why it lifts easier. Out of the bunch, PY150 is the staining color so the more you add it to the mix, the more staining it should get. I like the original DS the most :( Too bad I got serious about watercolor only after they discontinued the pigment... I do enjoy Schmincke's version though. One of my favorite yellows.

Wow. I can see why the big hoopla over the old DS Quin gold. Only one I have is QOR that came with an intro high chroma set. It will last me years as it's so strong I use it very weak.. Thanks Oto. Looking forward to the mixes.

I bet the eBay price for tubes of PO49 goes up again after this video! It’s good to know how the new ones stack up. A few original DS blended colors (like undersea green) had PO49 in them.I have a small stash of PO49 I like to mix them myself now that they’re gone too. Can’t wait to see the mixes! Thank you Oto 🙏🏼

I Feel bad because I don't understand the intetest in this colour, either version. But I appreciate that many people love it! It makes me realize, however, that if you love a colour it is important to stock up on it, because you never know! Thank for another detailed comparison.

They do all look similar. I'm glad someone else has the same findings as me in that in terms of mixing the hues behave the same it's only in glazing you notice a difference. The old Mars yellow by sennelier is much closer to the ds old one. I have a tube of the jacksons one and it's different pigments! It threw me off as I thought it was the same as sennelier.

I have 1 partly used tube of the old Daniel Smith quin gold, and two unopened tubes. I’ve got the unopened tubes carefully tucked away so I dont use them before the opened tube is used. Lifetime supply for me. I’ve made my own custom pan of sap green which I love.

I just got a tube of WnN. Unfortunately, new formula. Pro, I love the color! But I suspect I’d love nickel azo yellow similarly, it’s Quin madder red and pv19 plus that yellow.

I didn't discover Quin Gold until the alarm was sounded that it was gone! So I did some research and decided to try the M. Graham Nickel Quin Gold. I really LOVE using it - it seems to add a glow to things. I mostly use DS colors but at the time I wanted to try some M. Graham. On my computer looking at your comparison the M. Graham looks a bit more muted and brown... So now I'm thinking I may do better with a different brand down the road. None of them really seemed like a clear winner to me though. Maybe when I'm ready for a new tube they'll somehow bring back the original pigment. LOL... Is that a possibility BTW. I realize it's the auto industry that made it but the demand seems really high.

Until they call it a Hue or a totally diff name,.... I refuse to buy that color from any brand! New gamboge is my fav yellow at the moment anyway. The original quin gold looks so amazing and think im going to give up my leg and buy a old stock one. I just got into watercolor a few months ago.....

I agree…. I would not call it “gold” at all. More like “barf green”, which I think is my most UNfavorite color in the world. I just yesterday bought the new Sennelier version, which I think is a lot better.
