Hi Eva, long time no see. I too have become a "color nerd" One thing we need to remember about any of the watercolor companies, they are a company and what they want to do is sell, so developing "New" colors is an end to a goal. And this will work for many people who do not want to educated themselves on color. That said, what a useful video for those beginning to help educate on colors and pigments. I often see pictures of pigments lined up on walls and wonder how anyone can paint with 100 colors. Although for those who are more of a crafter, cardmaker, sketcher, etc, being able to just take a color out of a tube and use it is useful. In fine art, as you know and taught me a long time ago, too many colors causes loss of luminosity and eventually a dull muddy overworked look. Love you videos! Get to know your pigments everyone, not the names given.....

Thank you so much for your sweet, thoughtful comment! Glad to hear you also like to do some "color nerding"! The longer I paint, the more I have become facinated and interested in the actual formulation of the pigments I use. It really gives an extra layer of understanding why things happen on your paper, and how to use it to your advantage, instead of fighting it. Choose the right color/pigment for what you want to accomplish, and painting becomes more fun not to mention easier!
And yes, paint companies want to sell colors, and have to come up with "new" colors, which are usually just combinations of exixting colors. So, with that in mind, you can learn how to mix your own, or decide you like the convenience of a pre-mixed color. I just want to educate watercolorists, so they can make the right decision for themselves. Different strokes for different folks as the saying goes! As long as we keep having fun painting!

Quinacridone Gold was once a single pigment color. (PO49). But when the last of the stock from DS was gone, they had to improvise to create the hue using PO48 & PY150. I also want to add that there were two Quin Golds from Daniel Smith. One was Quin Gold deep and both were made with the single pigment of PO49. I'm so sorry to be late responding but I only just found you today. I have been looking for new watercolorists that interest me. I love watching other peoples technique & pigment interests. I've retired from teaching watercolor except for one student. I almost got started doing UA-cam videos' but changed my mind in 2020. I just don't have that much drive anymore. I just wanted to tell you that my 1st tube of Daniel Smith Quinacridone Sienna was back when they were still using PO49 as part of the mix with PR209. I loved it so much and then it changed when Daniel Smith finally used up the last of the PO49 stock. I bought several tubes thinking I would get originals and found that it had changed. Its still lovely though. I admit to being a pigment nerd. I did stock up on several tubes of the real (PO49)Quin Gold. I have both Quin Gold and Quin Gold deep in the single pigment PO49.

Thank you so much for your insightful comments regarding the Quinacridone Gold color journey, as well as your kind words Renee! They mean a lot to me.
Yes, having a UA-cam channel is quite a lot of work, so I totally understand your decision not to go ahead and start your own channel. I'm a Grandma, and it takes a lot of my time these days, so I'm not quite as consistent getting new videos up, but I do what I can😊
I have pretty much retired from in-person teaching too, but think I might put on some workshops now and then, once I feel it's safe to do so, and I can fit it in to my schedule.

Another color nerd here re-starting my color journey after a significant hiatus.
Far from being overwhelmed, i’m totally fascinated with pigments and the “science behind the surface” (hmmm 🤔 - interesting title for a book/essay/podcast/blog on the importance of knowing ones pigments)
I found your youtube channel as i was researching what pigments were in quin sienna (and had also been wondering whether to buy quin gold) but now after your explanation and demonstration i will instead buy the orange pigment (already have the other two) and mix my own. Thank you.
The other benefit of color nerding with watercolor pigment is that with oil and acrylic i didn’t connect with color on the level (ie. pigment) i am with watercolor. I now have a whole different appreciation for painting compared with pre-watercolor. It’s exciting.

It’s good to know how to make your own color mixes, so you don’t have to buy so many different colors!
Less is more - and also less chance of creating mud!😘

Thank you so much - yes, it really is fascinating to explore all the different color choices we have nowadays! Finding out what some of the "new" colors consist of, so we can often mix them ourselves from the colors we already own!

Thanks for the review, helpful! I definitely won't be getting it. I love the W&N Burnt Sienna too! The only 3 pigment watercolor I absolutely love in that color range is Sennelier Chinese Orange. It's gorgeous and unique. PY150, PBr23, PR209. It's included in their test pack and it really glows, and oddly, it's a great mixer. 😊

Thank you so much for your great comments. I’ll have to check out the Sennelier Chinese Orange you mention- I’m not familiar with it. I actually don’t think I have any Sennelier watercolors in my extensive collection. 🎨😌

@@EvaNichols28 their 5 color test pack (tubes) is worth it. The Payne's Gray is beautiful and there's a great Turquoise in there, it's a CMY palette. Their mini half pan travel set is great too for a good intro (if you can get it half off☺️) , but I would get the tube set if I could only get one. It's a great brand, and great if you layer and glaze. 🎨☺️
