    The second I got this video recommended I knew that he was going to call out the STG 44s in the Pacific. That really bothered me as well. The historical inaccuracy in the guns is ridiculous. It doesn't have to be super accurate but Japanese troops having STG 44s and in 1943 plus MG42s makes no sense. World at War had the guns based on the front. The multiplayer was always based on the player choice but singleplayer always kept everything accurate.

    The Mosin's old imperial designation was "Three-line rifle, model 1891".
    By the time the soviets updated it, it was simply designated "Rifle, model 1891/1930", although the "three-line" stuck as a nickname among soldiers.
    A "line" is a Russian Imperial unit of measurement, equal to 1/10th of an inch. So 3-line is, in fact, exactly .30cal.

    A fun fact about the revolving shotgun ingame: It’s name of Einhorn revolving translates to “Unicorn revolving” which is quite a play on words as I suspect the developers had because a Unicorn gun according to the internet is a colloquial label for those newly released and/or highly desirable firearms that have proven nearly or completely impossible to find. And since that shotgun is an extremely hard to find weapon, the name fits it like a glove

    17:25 in regards to the Webley, that's exactly what was happening. The consoles (or PC if you have a controller) will actually make the hammer and trigger pull follow the depression of the trigger buttons. The further you pull back the button on the gamepad the further the hammer goes back until it goes off. So in essence he was, indeed, staging the hammer before pulling it the rest of the way.

      it's actually not as unreasonable as it sounds - marines on iwo jima found and captured numerous MG-15s on motoyama airfield no. 1
      marines in the pacific also encountered p08 lugers and the occasional german or dutch rifle - as the japanese captured a ton of german produced & dutch rifles from the dutch, many of which were thrown back into service with the ija, even madsens

And when you’re going against aliens with armor and stuff maybe you do need a full power cartridge, idk I’m not an alien biologist.
      As far as the shotgun goes it has its magazine tube above the barrel, making it easier for ergonomics. It was also used for shutting down riots and uprisings, which is maybe why it’s pump action in order to use less lethal rounds.

    The vertical flip on the Owen was likely more because of the screen real estate.
    The giant mag jutting out the top would likely cover a large portion of the screen if they had the sights on the right, and that covering of said screen space would make players want to use the gun significantly less. Meaning all the hard work of making it would be largely wasted.
    Flipping it around makes it so that less of the screen is covered, making it much more useable gun from a gameplay perspective.

    14:29 - This was likely done not to keep the sight in the center of the screen, but the gun on the right side of the screen. A lot of elements in game design, particularly audio/visual elements, are about establishing consistency. If you break consistency, it needs to have a gameplay-mandated reason to do so, because the player will be disoriented from the change (even if only briefly). It's possible they tested it with the original sights and testers complained about not being able to hit anything, and then flipped it and testers suddenly could hit stuff again.
    You may not notice that sort of stuff, but your brain does.

    • @MoosebreathMan65

      One of the LMGs in the game has the sights on the right side of the gun and the ADS pose puts the weapon on the left. While a bit weird, it works just fine for that gun. I’d reckon they decided against this for the Owen gun because the ADS transitions happen much more quickly and often compared to an LMG, leading to more disorientation when the gun is constantly switching from left to right.

    • @staryoshi06
      @staryoshi06 3 роки тому +11

      I mean, ironsights in games tend to keep the gun in the middle, so putting it on either side would still feel "weird". Day of infamy found a pretty good way to keep it in the centre by just angling the gun to the left slightly, though. They could have done that.

    • @NACLGames
      @NACLGames 2 роки тому +9

      Speaking from my perspective as a game designer, I simply would have chosen another gun to use on that stage if that was a problem. Now, it's entirely possible there are some issues preventing that....there's nothing left in the modeling budget, we need to wrap up this stage in a certain sprint, the design book says we have to have a representative gun for each country (and the Aussies didn't have another SMG to my knowledge....but then again, we're talking the game that put a SIGNIFICANT number of stg44s in the hands of Japanese troops....) But frankly, it's still hard for me to justify making that kind of change in a game with a historical bent like COD. Sure it's not a realistic game...but it's an 'immersive' game, or it's supposed to be. For example, lets say your game had an issue with headshots being overpowered. You could shrink the human heads.....which would be a ridiculous solution even in a cartoon style game. If it's really that bad, then a better solution is maybe just remove headshot damage then. Games aren't just technical pieces of work, and it's the job of a designer to preserve what the game is about WHILE balancing the gameplay and solving player issues....otherwise it wouldn't be one of the hardest jobs in the industry.
      On that note, I'd much rather buy into Johnathan's guess that they got a schematic, thought it was flipped because it didn't make sense to them, and modeled it incorrectly. Then it's just an honest mistake, rather than lazy design.

    The way that game screens draw the gun far away from the "eye" and covering a small part of the screen is probably part of the reason the aperture sights are often modeled too large. It if was a big block with a tiny hole, it would just cover whatever you're aiming at since the tiny aperture would be a pinprick on the screen. A large airy ring doesn't make the already obstructive iron sights totally unusable in a game seting. This is also probably one reason for why halo and red dot sights are overly popular in games. It just works well and makes aiming easy using a mouse or controller and a monitor.

    I've got a .22 replica of an STG-44 the magazine release needs alot of force to get that one out. Also have a Mosin and a Mk 3* SMLE the bolt operation is night and day on both.

    I'm pretty sure the wide apertures, as well as the cut-in-half sights are there for the same reason why guns with notch sights tend to have much wider cut-out sights in games - they're just not very nice to look at in a game :D they take some creative liberty to widen those apertures, widen those notches and cut the rings in half to reduce the amount of metal cluttering the player's vision - they're not really concerned with whether or not you can use the sight effectively, since the gun will always shoot where it needs to, but all the extra metal occluding it probably makes the iron sights unpleasant to use

    its just that they did NOT get the thumb anywhere close enough to make it look like the character presses the button

    on the slow-mo view of the first person reload of the Garand it does look the thumb is animated to press SOMETHING, you can see it move just slightly as the main hand pulls back the charging handle, but its not positioned so that it would make contact with the gun model and the related button.

    Very interesting to see the discrepancies with things like reload animations. I'm sure the call of duty developers have someone on their team in charge of gun research but they have to draw the line and make compromises to release the game within budget and on schedule. It would be more time consuming and expensive to fully animate all reloads to be technically correct. Also in balancing the guns for their desired game-feel, they want smaller guns to reload quicker and heavier guns to reload slower. Sometimes this means doing away with real life practicalilties. Its important to realise that the animators and design team working on games like these are well aware that many of their animations are not real but high enough fidelity for it to pass in a game. Fixing the idiosyncracies of a magazine not having the correct amount of rounds on a reload requires an expensive work pipeline and the employees that worked on it originally might be doing something else now, unlike an indie game. Not to mention they probably made the decision to reuse the same amount of rounds on partial reloads to save costs.

    I inherited an old SMLE with the same fold up sights. I broke the aperture by tripping over and dropping it on a rock. Those battle sights arent as hard as you think. This games SMLE sights kinda look like mine except my sight broke kinda diagonally. Would be easy to do in the field.

    One thing I noticed from the last video on Vanguard but didn't comment is. The Luger with Drum Mag, holds a grand total of 12 rounds, now I don't know the actual capacity but I know it's not 12.
