I own and use both. They sound great for hard rock (not for metal). They work very well together. I boost the dark matter with the mojo during solos, gives me more sustain, drive and volume.
You can use them to push an amp input as well. I use the mojomojo for metal and works pretty well, but most of distortion voice is from my amp and the mojomojo is mainly a boost like a tubescreamer.
I use the dark matter as if it's an overdrive with a boost setting through an already driven amp, much like a TS9. It has the versatility to be used as both a light overdrive and a full on distortion, and it's great for Metal. I also use high output pickups and have an extremely aggressive playing style so that adds to it as well.
I think the Dark Matter might have a slightly brighter tone. It's subtle but, seems it's there. This is the best video comparison of these two excellent pedals I've seen. Thanks much!
The DM also has more gain, altho the circuit is similar. I own both and I can tell you that the DM has a fuller tone (more bass and treble) and sounds better on its own through a clean channel than the mojomojo unless you're going for something vintage or lower gain. Altho, if you want to use them to stack with the preamp of a high gain amp, imo the mojomojo is better because of the mid-emphasis of the pedal, you end up with a tighter tone.
@@jerod256 interesting, I had the DM for a brief period and thought it was a bit too fizzy. I prefer a classic rock mid-rangey sound so, I might pick up a MojoMojo just to see if it better suites my tastes. Thanks for the info.
Nice review. It made it rather clear to me that I don't need to have both. They are voiced very close to each other. The dark matter sounds like a mojomojo with ~25% more overdrive and slightly more trembly. Not really that much into distortion territory. Not sure how their EQ is voiced though and how it could make them more different or not. If you are on a budget, you can probably get more versatility matching one of these with a rat or tubescreamer type pedal than with each other. Both in series might still be interesting.
Thanks for this vid ! I have the MojoMojo and was thinking of getting the Dark Matter but now I'm not so sure it will add significantly to my sound. Very useful to hear the two side by side, thanks again ;-)
Well one is an overdrive and one is distortion. Both have their place depending what kind of music you are playing. Ones more of a blues to hard rock, the other is hard rock to metal. I have the mojo and love it, but to play heavier stuff to sound anywhere close you need a distortion option and for me it's between the dark matter and the metal muff but I can't find anything comparing the two which sucks because they are both pretty cheap.
idk if alot of you guys read but the tone switch on the mojo cuts some of the bass and the tone switch on the dark matter boosts the bass. thats about the biggest difference in functions.
The two pedals are, as I have long suspected, virtually identical, save for that the Dark Matter has slightly more gain. The Dark Matter with the gain at 75% sounds identical to the MojoMojo with the gain at 100%. Now I wonder how the Rottweiler compares? Is it just the same pedal, with a little more gain?
Agreed on the Dark Matter and MojoMojo, which is what I like about them, on my pedal board I can have the MojoMojo covering the low gain sound and the Dark Matter for the gainer stuff. Good questions about the Rottweiler. I've never tried that one, sounds like a good one to give a whirl.
Rottweiler is (was?) a gain monster. Low setting is more than both of these combined, and can melt sensitive faces. Full gain will cause hair to grow on a dead woman's chest. The voicing switch is standard metal mid scoop to a mid boost for cutting leads.
Good comparison., would help to have added single note lines and pickup selector variations also, but nevertheless you did demonstrate each pedals tonal and drive characteristics so that's satisfactory.
I prefer the Dark Matter. I may be biased though since I own one and haven't tried the Mojomojo in person. I also have the Cabdryvr but put an amp simulation pedal before it.
i have both dark matter and mojo and yes to me theyre identical only dark matter have 25% more gain but i still have it both because some cover songs i play demands the tone of dark and mojo separately... i am now wondering what would the röttweiler would sound... is it a combi of dark and mojo both gain cranck up? ... i am hoping to get my hands on röttweiler since it's discontinued
I forgot all about the Röttweiler. I just went and watched a few videos of the röttweiler and man, that pedal is calling my name. I think I'm going to seriously be on the look out for one of those ASAP. Thanks for the reminder. Now if I can get a röttweiler and also along with my Dark Matter and MojoMojo, I should be able to cover a lot of ground sonically. \m/
Chris Benton just an update with a bit of luck i manage to get my hands on the Röttweiler .. bought it second hand but but in 99% prestine condition like it wasnt even used .. comes with the unscratched box 9v generic psu/patchcable/velcro ... and man the Rött sounds amazing not what i expected . i thought its gonna be like mojo and dark stacked in full gain but its not .. its way more lots of gain and headroom , but kinda hmm how to put it in words.., compressed or managed? tamed? like i mean its not messy like when i use my boss mt2 ..very good for heavy metal rock music so much gain but very well composed ...🤘😎🤘

@@austinfailz I want to know how it sounds in a mix on it's own. Paul doesn't use the mojomojo as a stand alone drive he uses it as a base tone for stacking, and if he is playing or touring (not including with Mr. Big), he can still get his tones if he is stuck with an odd amplifier.

Rimar Aerrazan Awesome, thanks for the update. 👍🏻 I have a used on in my sights and hopefully soon I’ll have one in my collection. In retrospect, I think the röttweiler is more my style than the MojoMojo and the Dark Matter are but happy I have those too.
That was one of the best side by side videos I’ve seen. Great job!
Burl Schnarl Thank you, much appreciated 👍🏻

It's the same pedal but the mojo's drive goes from 0-8 and the drk-matter goes from 2-10
Very well stated
Indeed. And maybe a small tonal difference in the switch thingy.
Best comparison of these 2, thank you. The Dark Matter is my classic rock distortion and excels at that.
erictoniaschwab1009 Thanks, very kind of you to say so and 100% agree. The Dark Matter is great for classic rock.

They were designed to tone stack. If you watch the demo's that TC released Torre mentions that, and demonstrates it. Absolutely delicious together.

But if you're doing the level cranked, gain off method into high gain, I'm wondering which one is going to be better and diminishing bass flubbiness

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought they sounded the same!
Thanks for the video, I needed a comparison
You are very welcome. I hoped it helped out.

Pretty decent tone on both, even with full gain.
Nicely done. Pure useful comparison, no fuzz (pun intended).

Wonderful comparison.
Thanks for your helpful video!
two great pedals
they almost sound identical.. the only defference seems to be that mojo mojo has lesser gain
Natural!... Mojo is an overdrive pedal, Dark - distortion....
The difference is subtle. Dark matter gives me crazy train vibes.
Great video... good job.

great video!
Thanks Brad, I appreciate the feedback.
Well made video!!
Now I need to listen to AC/DC's Live Wire..
Make a comparison between tc electronic dark matter vs. mxr fullbore metal
A more accurate comparison would be Rottweiler vs. MXR.
dark matter is the MojoMojo with a lot of gain+
thats true. es verdad.
I have to agree.mojomojo is dark matter light.
Anyone know how the mojomojo sounds in a mix? I've heard terrible.
Travis 2000 works for Paul Gilbert.
The placement in a mix has absolutely nothing to do with pedal choice.
Another ac/dc sounding pedal not ozzy
I CANT STAND PC ELECTRONIC..Lucky I got this AWESOME Dark matter pedal in a trade..It sits next to my green pedal and my carbon copy perfectly.
see no relevant diference
These pedals shouldn’t be compared mojo is an overdrive and dark matter is a distortion pedal🤦🏻♂️🤷♂️
Utter piffle. The circuit is identical.
Not to sound disappointed but I think I know why they are priced low.
Not to sound informed, but why would that be when the circuit is identical to much higher-priced pedals?
Vidio to long...wrap it up in 2mins if you can.Dark Matter is better.
star cloud Ok, thanks for the feedback.
@@Tone-Quest dont listen to him.
Fact: no.
