So the three ways you did it I can do the first method to all the rivets and will be fine? I just don’t have the chizzle or the grinder

If you have a air chisel with a flat head tip it'll help tremendously with snapping the rivet head after drilling past the flat part

For those of you doing this crawling around on your back and using jack stands, do yourself a favor...take the control arm off. So much easier to drill those rivets out!

This is a great video, I did start with the intent of replacing just he ball joint however after the aggravation of having to grind, drill, chisel and cut the old rivets out I returned the ball joint and just replaced the entire control arm. You save maybe $30 by doing just the ball joint but it’ll take you 5 x’s as long. Save the aggravation and just do the entire control arm with integrated ball joint but make sure to get the arm with the bolt on ball joint. This isn’t for lack of ability I’ve been a ticketed heavy duty mechanic for 20+ years; this is an example of picking your battles.

i need this done on my equinox as well. The boot has been torn and im getting a loud clunk noise when i turn the wheel all the way to the right. It just recently started making a pretty loud roaring sound when driving that i cannot diagnose. I can just hear it coming from that front end. Im just curious what your symptoms where for a bad ball joint?

    • @johondarr2530
      @johondarr2530 5 років тому +1

Update. My loud roaring noise was a bad wheel bearing. I installed both fronts today and no more loud noises from the front.

@@johondarr2530 ball joint makes a knocking noise on rougher road... here in Canada in the winter it’s easy to diagnose.

You need a little Tap Magic to lubricate and cool the metal, and to use slower speeds with larger drills for more effective drilling.

Next time save time by grinding the heads off the rivets and punching it out with a punch Use a grinder And keep the drill and your tool Box Can do it in half the time

In terms of labor cost and time, is it cheaper to drill out and replace just the ball joint?
Or replace the entire lower control arm which includes a new ball joint?
What is nice about the ball joint only approach is that some have the grease fittings.

A good drill bit actually went through them like butter. Took me about 2 minutes to go through all 3 of them.

    • @spikeshartell4675

Just got done doing this job and to be honest, I don't think replacing the entire control arm would have been much easier.
I used the X's with the cutting wheel and air hammer method. Didn't take too long and once the rivets we're out the rest was a cake walk

  • @charvakkarpe

It's painful to watch the drilling at such high speeds. You're wrecking the drill bit and heat treating the metal. Slow down the drill, use more cooling lubricant.

  • @MS-mx8yj
