  • As my friend Ocean Robbins says, “When you eat the Standard American Diet you get the standard American diseases.” In fact, poor diet is responsible for almost 700,000 death in the US each year, and 11 million worldwide! And the average American consumes 55 pounds of added sugar in year, which we know is a major contributor towards the diabesity epidemic. The good news is that each step towards real, wholesome, delicious foods reduces your risk for chronic disease and increases your ability to feel great.
This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sit down with Ocean to talk about the current state of our food system and what we can do to be part of the revolution to create a healthier and happier future for everyone. Ocean is the author of 31-Day Food Revolution: Heal Your Body, Feel Great, & Transform Your World. He serves as CEO and co-founder of the Food Revolution Network-one of the largest communities of healthy eating advocates on the planet, with more than 500,000 members.

Thanks to you both for the interview. Dr Hyman is one of the few who seem to really care. he doesn't argue with his guests when he doesn't agree with 100% of what they say. I believe he just wants us to be healthier, making even small changes. Thanks again! I cannot wait for the book.

From the perspective of "Food is Medicine" and my own opinion, this has been the most articulate, comprehensive and substantive discussion on The Doctor's Farmacy with Mark Hyman, M.D. so far. How great would it be to see Dr. Ocean Robbins and Dr. Larry Summers problem-solving U.S. Food Policy? Thank you for another great interview Dr. Hyman!

This was awesome! Can't wait to read the book. I just began the FMCA program last week and this topic is exactly what I love to learn about. You both give me so much inspiration and are true heroes. I am grateful to be a part of this health and wellness movement through nutrition, functional medicine and lifestyle medicine. Thank you!!!

I used to work at McDonalds but I quit eating fries there after doing a vegan diet. I am not vegan but I gave up cows milk for almond milk. Grass fed I read is good for brain health I love ice cream. But I am going to give that up I think its about time. If I do eat ice cream I am going to make my own with stevia and almond milk.

All the Blue Zones are coastal areas. They eat a ton of fish there. Duh...also, even according to the biased and corrupt research Sardinians and Nicoyans consume a quarter of their diet as dairy, which IS an animal product that Hyman would call "poison". Moreover, not only do they consume lots of fish but also a ton of pork, especially the Costa Ricans and Okinawans. The Sardinians eat a ton of lamb, goat, beef, pork, fish...The only dietary outlier here are the 7th Day Adventists who CHOOSE to move to Loma Linda ALREADY in their OLD age, where they have an entire hospital focused in cardiology to help support their failing hearts. These people are self-selected from a population of American 7th Day Adventists that hasn't been shown to do any better than the rest of the American population as far as longevity, with everything else being equal.

Ocean Robbins confuses correlations with causation. Plus not more Blue Zone myths. So much nutritional science is epi-study preliminary science.

How about eating no animals. More animals are dying daily from Hyman's diet than humans have died in all the the wars that have happened in the las few centuries. I wish Ocean would stand behind is principals and speak up about ethics. They are both dancing around not mentioning animal ethics. Oy..

Animal ethics is a separate conversation for people who choose to have those conversations. Eating animals vs plants for nutrition is a scientific conversation for smarter people.

@@00023 Agreed. And at a higher level of education people usually bring in to the conversation ecology, ethic, psychology and how all this interacts to effect the body and a society. If you isolate just to nutrition it dumbs the conversation down enough to make your positions easier to argue for and more divisive for your listeners. You could say we are only talking about how slavery is really a boon to the economy and call that a higher level of conversation - of course the abolitionists are going to thing you are low IQ or or a racist. You could say that Jews provide more basic nutrition for humans that a cow because we are more similar and say ethics is a different conversation for the less learned... It depends on what motivates your understanding and your ability to look at a bigger picture.
